USA: Illegal Mistreatment of Pigs By Southern Quality Meats, Inc. (SQM), a Pontotoc, Miss.

UNST0001

Mother pigs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed that illegal mistreatment of pigs took place inside Southern Quality Meats, Inc. (SQM), a Pontotoc, Miss., slaughterhouse, where a whistleblower took video footage showing pigs jabbed with electric prongs and other poor handling. One worker even put the prongs, which can carry an electric current, on one apparently stunned mother pig’s lower abdomen and/or genitals.

Newly released USDA records show that SQM had long been aware of its animal-handling problems and not only broke the law but also had trouble complying with the USDA’s directives once caught.

The Mississippi Department of Education has awarded contracts worth millions in taxpayer dollars to SQM to supply sausage to Mississippi schools. Federal funds subsidize the state’s school meal programs, too.

England: Plans for Beagle Breeding Facility Rejected (Again).

England

http://www.care2.com/causes/victory-plans-for-beagle-breeding-facility-rejected.html

Beagle breeders

In a victory for animals, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Planning Committee voted this week to reject a controversial proposal to build a breeding facility for beagles intended for research.

Last year, public outcry helped stop similar plans in East Yorkshire. However, another proposal for a scaled-down version on the same site that’s owned by Bantin & Kingman Universal Ltd (B&K) was submitted this year and became the center of another controversy surrounding the use of dogs in research and animal testing in general.

Animal advocates, local residents and celebrities rallied against the proposal that was submitted earlier this fall by Yorkshire Evergreen, a subsidiary of U.S. company Marshall BioResources, over concerns about the cruelty inherent in breeding and keeping dogs for research and problems it would cause for residents.

The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) and the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) are among those celebrating the plan’s rejection for sparing thousands of dogs from a life of suffering.

“East Riding of Yorkshire Council has made the right decision to reject plans to breed beagles for experiments in Grimston. This is a significant victory for animals, public opinion and modern science. The Council has shown today that using dogs in experiments is quite literally a dying industry,” said NAVS Chief Executive Jan Creamer.

According to NAVS:

In 2012, 3,214 dogs were used in 4,843 experiments in Great Britain, meaning that some dogs were forced to endure multiple tests. Dogs can have their heads forced into masks to breathe in toxic substances, be restrained as tubes are pushed down their throats for force-feeding, or strapped into harnesses to have substances pumped through their veins. Substances tested on dogs include weed killer, drugs and industrial chemicals, in huge quantities. At the end of the experiment, most dogs are killed.

Some researchers and the company in question still argue that using dogs, and animals in general, in research is a necessary evil. David Gatehouse, spokesman for B&K, told the Yorkshire Post that “people need to see through animal rights campaigners’ ‘medieval quackery.’”

However, when it comes to medieval quackery, it looks like vivisectors are the ones who remain in the dark ages. The announcement coincides with the release of a new study that has concluded dogs are unreliable test subjects when it comes to testing drugs for humans. The study will be published in the journal Alternatives to Laboratory Animals.

The BUAV and the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME) undertook the most comprehensive analysis to date of the predictive value of dogs as models for toxicity testing in humans by analyzing thousands of publicly-available toxicological studies that used dogs and found that “canine models are highly inconsistent predictors of toxic responses in humans.”

This finding raises concerns not only about pointlessly causing dogs to suffer in experiments, but that medicines that could work on humans might never make it to clinical trials with people because unreliable animal models failed.

The organizations hope that their findings will lead to more debate about switching to test models that don’t use animals. The BUAV is also working to get the Coalition Government to uphold its promise to reduce animal testing, which reached a 25 year high in 2012, and to stop using companion animals in tests with its Our Best Friends campaign.

Romania: City Hall of Pitesti starts capturing stray dogs – First abuses of the dog catchers.

City Hall of Pitesti starts capturing stray dogs

First abuses of the dog catchers

Veterinarian with experience in killing dogs in the 2000’s now recovers his job back

After 13 years since the inhabitants of Pitesti have no longer seen dog catchers strangling chained dogs and dragging them along the street pavements, last Monday the people in blue overalls to whom the City Council entrusted the task of capturing the stray dogs of Pitesti already reported their first victim: after chasing a dog until they pushed it under the wheels of a car, they practically let it lie there, in the middle of the street, in full traffic, after he had been hit by a car. The witnesses of this scene promptly asked for the intervention of AULIM, who came and picked the fractured-spine dog, which had been crawling to the edge of the street.

And yet, the victim of this incident was not only the dog broken into halves by the untrained and disinterested dog catchers, but also a human being, as well: a person who could not resist the sight of this scene had to be helped and taken home, where she was provided with medical care.

The Pitesti inhabitants pay out of their own pockets for the illegalities committed by the dog catchers.

If until the present the citizens of Pitesti has not had any financial contribution to the management of stray dogs, once this was something supported from private funds from Germany, now, for the capturing and killing of each stray dog, the Pitesti inhabitants pay out of their own pockets, either they like it or not. Besides, they even pay with their own money for the first illegalities committed.

The car numbered Ag 20 KRM that is used to capture the dogs is not inscriptioned, just like the dogcatchers’ equipments, too, and nobody knows their origin, since, once asked about them, even their users seem not to know where they come from. The car is hermetically closed, has no ventilation, the transport is not made in individual cages, and the tranquilized dogs are piled on one another. The contracting firm of this service has ”managed” to breach the provisions of at least three laws: Government Urgency Ordinance No. 155 on the approval of the stray dogs management programme, as subsequently amended and supplemented, Law no. 205/2004 concerning animals protection, and Council Regulation (EC) 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport.

Stefan Preda, the veterinarian employed by the Pitesti City Hall before 2001 to kill stray dogs, is now reinstated into his old position after 13 years of … waiting!

Stefan Preda has been well-known to the animal lovers for his ”diligent” work in the 2000’s, as well as for his quick answer, in 2001, when asked ”How could you kill 2000 dogs?”, when he corrected his interviewer by saying: “I beg your pardon, they were 4000, Madam!”, and accompanied this rectification with a satisfied smile.

Over the 2000’s, the dogs used to be injected with formol or poisoned by strychnine.

Considering how gladly he accepted this killing job of the stray dogs, after only 14 days (as per the operating rules for the public service, as adopted by the Local Council of Pitesti), we wonder whether financial satisfactions are the only ones that Stefan Preda may derive from that.

Twenty-one veterinarians from Pitesti signed an open letter against the euthanasia programme against stray dogs. “We strictly delimit ourselves from any professional fellow who may breach our professional deontological code and principle of morality in this respect”, considering that “any activities of stray dogs slaughter are inglorious and demeaning” and that “we cannot assimilate our profession as veterinarian to that of hired assassins”.

Wartezeit wieder in Amt gesetzt!

****THIS DOG WAS SAVED FROM THE HORROR OF THE POZEGA TORTURE & KILL POUND****

JKP, Nas Dom (ironically translated to ‘Our Home’) is an infamous dog pound in Pozega, Serbia, referred to by activists as a dog concentration camp. It is funded by local government and dogs from 7 cities are caught and impounded within its walls to face unimaginable cruelty and death.

DOGS SUFFER THE INDESCRIBABLE AGONY OF STARVATION AT POZEGA – THEY ARE LITERALLY LEFT IN EMPTY CAGES WITHOUT FOOD TO SLOWLY STARVE TO DEATH.

The confusion, suffering and fear endured by these dogs is unimaginable. Many look like walking skeletons, some are too weak to lift their heads. Puppies die a slow and painful death while their emaciated and desperate mothers watch helplessly. Dogs cower in corners or curl into tight balls as they have no means to escape. Puppies eat their deceased litter mates in an attempt to stay alive. But those who do survive the starvation then face death through being beaten, strangled, or injected with T61 chemicals (without sedation or anaesthetic).

Even those rescued do not escape the torture. Before we can liberate a dog they are sterilised by an unqualified vet who butchers their bodies and sews them up with string instead of surgical thread. It is feared that no anaesthetic is used during surgeries. Many rescued dogs are on the brink of death due to the ruptures and infections caused by such procedures.

The alleged torture and abuse carried out by the Pozega staff is well documented and 17+ criminal charges have already been brought against the shelter, but still this facility operates and even now poor desperate animals are being caught and impounded within this death camp.

THESE ARE MAN’S BEST FRIENDS – LOYAL & LOVING
– BRUTALLY TORTURED & KILLED

Those impounded in Pozega are mainly street dogs, some were once cherished family pets now abandoned. Many of the recent rescues have serious health problems due to butchered sterilisations and untreated illnesses and infections. Some are fighting for their lives. From the 108 saved in the last 5 months, 11 have already lost the battle to survive since their release.

BELGRADE HUMANIMAL HAVE NOW RUN OUT OF FUNDS. WE CANNOT CARE FOR THE SURVIVING RESCUED DOGS WITHOUT DONATIONS.

Rescue costs include: Release fees, kennels or foster, additional food due to starvation, vet bills, including assessments, emergency operations, antibiotics etc., distemper serums, flea treatments, transport, inoculations & certifications.

WE CANNOT RESCUE ANYMORE DOGS UNTIL OUR DEBTS ARE PAID.
