USA: Oregon – Bad News For Wolves.

USA

SAV Comment – It seems as outsiders that those in power right across the country have basically got it in for wolves – and are intent on wiping them out whilst a band of better people are doing all to save them.  Learn from us in the UK; it is only when there are none remaining in your country and you cannot enjoy seeing and filming them that you then realise what a vital part they played in the national Ecosystem.  Efforts are being made here to re-introduce wolf into the UK.  People of the USA, Enjoy and respect what you have with your wolves – give them the protection they deserve.  And politicians; normally just a drop in the ocean trying to make a name for themselves; nothing more !

Save the wolf !!

—————————————

Dear Mark,

Terrible news out of Oregon:

Just hours ago the state Fish and Wildlife Commission tossed aside the best advice of more than two dozen expert scientists and stripped endangered species protection from Oregon’s wolves. This betrayal is a declaration by the state’s powerfully connected livestock and hunting interests that wolves like OR-7 and his new family have no place in Oregon’s future.

There are roughly 83 wolves in the entire state, and they’ve returned to only a tiny fraction of their historic range. Without this critical legal protection, the state is tearing up the road map for their recovery. If Oregon follows the pattern we’ve seen in other states where protections have been taken away, this move paves the way for more killing of wolves in the future — maybe even a wolf hunt — and a reversal of fortune for the western wolf population at large. We must stop this.

You can help the Center for Biological Diversity put Oregon’s wolves back in their rightful place — on the state’s endangered species list — with a donation to the Center’s Predator Defense Fund.

Within days the Center will be in court challenging this disastrous decision. We’ll sue the wildlife commission for violating the requirements of Oregon’s Endangered Species Act. Meanwhile our activists will bring political pressure on Oregon’s elected officials, working all-out to re-establish the legal protection that these wolves need. The people of Oregon have spoken ― and they’re on our side. More than 90 percent of the 22,000 public comments the commission received on this vote were in favor of maintaining endangered species protection for wolves. We’re going to rally our wildlife-loving supporters to help overturn this decision.

Fighting a state government in court is expensive so we’ll need your help. Donate today to the Predator Defense Fund so we can take on Oregon’s bureaucracy and restore wolf protections.

It’s not just Oregon’s wolves — like OR-7 and his new family — in jeopardy with this decision. The safest way for wolves to return to California is through the Oregon wilderness. Without Oregon, the return of wolves all along the West Coast is endangered. Help us preserve these wolves by contributing to our Predator Defense Fund. Your donation will work both in court and out to preserve and protect this critical species and help them regain their lost range.

It’s not too late for Oregon’s wolves. We’ll get them their day in court, and we need you there with them.

For the wolves,

Kierán Suckling

FURTHER UPDATE 8/11/15

SAV Comment – the following sounds like a very good idea and partial solution to the problems.  We will try to find out about where to make donations, but for the moment we suggest using the Facebook limnk at the very end of this post – please make it clear in your mail that the donation is for Jelena and a car.  Thank you.

https://www.facebook.com/mirjana.koch

Dear all..:) after Jelenas yesterday post (see below – SAV) the idea was born to collect for a car!

Costs for transport are so high and in Serbia it is possible to get one for max. 1500 €!

I hope we all will be able to collect this amount, so Dragoslava Ljuboja and Jelena Ljuboja can buy their own car and minimize the transport costs in the future..

Glen Smith thank you in advance for your unbelievable donation of 500 €…:) and thank you all for your support now and in the past! 🙂

Original Announcement

After few days of thinking and calculating , we have made decision . After all , I think that all of you deserve to know everything about that . All of you know how much ill dogs we have .

For those who not know , we have dog with metastasis , dog with dislocated hip and something more ( with low funds probably never will know what ) , dog with crushed hip ( who also need lot of examination because obviously is il ) , 2 dogs with chronic gastro problems, dog with bigger heart ( consequence of heart worm ) , dog with epilepsy ( who also need more vet examination) , dog with lung problem , dog with bone problem, dog with arthritis , paraplegic dog with low function of kidneys and bladder .

It is not easy to watch them every day . I won’t lie , for so many years in animal welfare we never had so many dogs who need constant vet . Today I must inform you that all of them will not have any vet .

We have vet in Coka but that same vet did not recognised that cat has 3 dangerous virus even when she barely was alive. I do not want that for my dogs . We have vet in Senta but she only can work sterilisation and vaccination – she has no ultrasound, x-ray or lab. Our dogs need all that because of their condition. That is reason why I take them to nearest clinic that has all of that . They are great . They work careful , they pay attention on everything , and they often reduce my bills .

But , transport to them is expensive for us . For example , total costs for Charlotte was more than 600E . For her was collected 300E. Difference we had to pay from money for shelter food . and she is not only example . Some of dogs could not collect anything . Not only that , for some sterilisations we still owe money .

So this is reason of our decision. We can not allow that dogs be hungry . We buy them food every few days because never have enough to buy big packs for week or two . Or whole month . It is hard decision, it is not what we wanted but we now have no choice.

Maybe was better to leave them on the street , maybe some of them could find better luck than with us . Maybe . But it is too late . They are here and they will have to survive on their own. For so many years only 3 of our rescued dogs died, 2 because they were old , one because was ill and had bad vet . I only hope that that number will not increase now.

We have done everything for them, and maybe somebody will judge this decision , but I can not choose who will go to vet , who no. I live with all of them , I see when they are in pain, when they are bad , when they suffer .

And I gave everything that they be ok.

But in this point I do not have anything to offer them anymore . Sorry.

UK: London Parliament – ‘Barbaric’ dog meat trade condemned by (UK) MPs.

uk

FURTHER UPDATE 6/11/15:

Please click on the ‘watch parliament’ link below and see the excellent speech made by Robert Flello MP in the House.  Time limits did not allow him to state all that he wished but we are sure you will agree with us that Mr. Flello made a superb speech and overview of the dog meat subject.

On Thursday 5 November MPs took part in a debate on the dog meat trade in the House of Commons Chamber. This debate was scheduled by the Backbench Business Committee following a bid from Robert Flello MP.

This debate was opened by Robert Flello, Labour MP for Edmonton.

Watch the debate and read the transcript

Watch Parliament TV: MPs debate dog meat trade

Read Commons Hansard: MPs debate the dog meat trade

SAV Comment – ‘Hansard’ (for our overseas supporters) is a written record that is made of every verbal statement that is made in the House of Commons during every parliamentary session by any / all MP’s who speak during any debate.  Although very large to compile and time consuming for those that make this daily record; it is a unique piece and formal documented written documentation which allows the press and organisations such as our self to go back in time and see exactly what was said by whom on any particular issue.  Hansard is the formal daily record of what was said in Parliament in order that is can be cross referred to at any later date should the need arise.

We fully support the Hansard system and what it provides.

‘Barbaric’ dog meat trade condemned by MPs

The (British / UK) government is to write to British embassies in countries where dog meat is consumed urging them to suggest ways to improve animal welfare in the trade.

Foreign Office Minister James Duddridge made the commitment in a Commons debate as MPs described the industry as “inhumane” and “disgusting”.

Labour MP Rob Flello said other countries’ traditions could not be a “smokescreen” for “barbaric” practices.

He called for action to stop an annual dog meat festival in south-west China.

The Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin in Guangxi province sparked huge protests in June, when 10,000 dogs were said to have been slaughtered. However, residents and vendors in Yulin said the animals were killed in a humane way.

Speaking during a backbench business debate in the Commons, Mr Flello said: “I don’t believe that it is generally the role of this House to tell societies abroad what they should and shouldn’t do based on Western sensibilities.

“But we cannot allow for tradition to be used as a smokescreen for practices that are barbaric, cruel, inhumane, disgusting – pick any word you can possibly pick and it will not come close to what we are discussing here today.”

Dogs help humans “in many, many ways,” he said: “But what dogs are not for is for the barbaric, disgusting, cruel, vicious, evil of putting them on somebody’s plate in the most horrible ways that this House in its worst nightmares could ever imagine.”

Conservative MP Simon Hoare expressed sympathy for Mr Flello’s motion but but warned against telling other countries what to do.

“If we go down a cultural imperialist route, as desirable as the outcome might be, I am tempted to think that there would be a very fierce backlash against that,” he added.

Promising to write to all ambassadors in the area to review what they are doing about the trade, Mr Duddridge said the government was committed to improving animal welfare around the world, including working with the Chinese administration, and was able “to have these difficult discussions across cultural divides”.

He added: “We will continue to raise these issues in the most effective way possible – which isn’t always megaphone diplomacy but sometimes speaking louder on these important issues is needed and where it is needed, we are prepared to speak.”

Mr Flello’s motion was agreed by the MPs but is not binding on the government.

Serbia: Sneska Enjoying All The Days She Has Remaining.

Serbian Flag

FELIX

felix cartoon 2

S2

As many of you already know, Sneska has a chronic kidney disease and has been showing symptoms of uremic stomatitis, which is a consequence of her primary disease, since the beginning of summer.

Over the last few months she has been given painkillers almost every day as it was the only way to keep her pain free and able to eat; unfortunately, we can do nothing to cure her CKD and make her healthy again. After her UV scan which showed what bad shape her kidneys were in, the vet wasn’t very optimistic and lately he seems almost surprised she is still hanging on.

However, we’ve been wondering for quite some time if we are doing her a favor or torturing her trying to prolong her life, albeit with the best intentions. She is not happy for a myriad of reasons: firstly, she is essentially an outdoor cat who adores the sun and is aching to be free, but she’s been imprisoned inside the house for over a year, for her own good. Secondly, she’s been pricked countless times over the months just because we wanted to ease the pain in her mouth so she could chew and swallow her food to stay alive; the result is that she started to shun humans, which is something she has never done before. It’s a fact that many cats with CKD can live out their lives without ever reaching kidney failure, but Sneska is at least 14 years old already and besides, what’s the point of life without joy?

Little by little, she became a wretched, sad, tormented creature, totally hopeless, utterly unhappy and that’s the exact opposite of what we wanted to achieve.

Long story short, for good or for bad, we made the decision to let her live whatever time she has left the way she wants – in the yard, together with her companions of 14 years, soaking up the sun, running through the early morning frost, climbing the roof, scratching trees, with no meds and no fear.

And that’s what she’s been doing since Saturday, more vivacious and happier than she has been in a long time. Instead of spending her days all contorted and miserable, she is finally the light-legged, swift, curious, proud Sneska who is holding her head up high, the one we have known, respected and adored over all of these years.

Each new day is a gift for her, she’s living it with absolute intensity, with a heart full of joy; when the time comes she will be ready to leave with no regrets and another star will appear in the dark night sky.

Run and shine now, our precious Sneska, run like there’s no tomorrow and always remember how much we love you.

England: Remember, Remember, The 5th Of November !

gunpowder plot bbc

BBC

Today, November 5th is known in England as ‘Bonfire Night’.

Across the land, large fires are lit and firework displays take place

to commemorate an event in ol’ London town from the year 1605.

Guy Fawkes is also known as

the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions

many today would still say this is very true !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1DC2BAsXb4

As the English say – “remember, remember, the 5th of November – a gunpowder treason and plot; there is no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot”.

Why ? – to celebrate the ‘Gunpowder plot’ –

or ‘Guy Fawkes night’.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpowder_Plot

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, in earlier centuries often called the Gunpowder Treason Plot or the Jesuit Treason, was a failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby.

The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of England’s Parliament on 5 November 1605, as the prelude to a popular revolt in the Midlands during which James’s nine-year-old daughter, Princess Elizabeth, was to be installed as the Catholic head of state.

Guy Fawkes, who had 10 years of military experience fighting in the Spanish Netherlands in suppression of the Dutch Revolt, was given charge of the explosives.

The plot was revealed to the authorities in an anonymous letter sent to William Parker, 4th Baron Monteagle, on 26 October 1605. During a search of the House of Lords at about midnight on 4 November 1605, Fawkes was discovered guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder—enough to reduce the House of Lords to rubble—and arrested. Most of the conspirators fled from London as they learned of the plot’s discovery, trying to enlist support along the way. Several made a stand against the pursuing Sheriff of Worcester and his men at Holbeche House; in the ensuing battle Catesby was one of those shot and killed. At their trial on 27 January 1606, eight of the survivors, including Fawkes, were convicted and sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered.

A gruesome death

To be hanged, drawn and quartered was from 1351 a statutory penalty in England for men convicted of high treason, although the ritual was first recorded during the reigns of King Henry III (1216–1272) and his successor, Edward I (1272–1307).

Convicts were fastened to a hurdle, or wooden panel, and drawn by horse to the place of execution, where they were hanged (almost to the point of death),emasculateddisembowelledbeheaded and quartered (chopped into four pieces). Their remains were often displayed in prominent places across the country, such asLondon Bridge. For reasons of public decency, women convicted of high treason were instead burned at the stake.

 the gunpowder plot 2 bbc

SAV Comment – many people were behind the views of Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators – he was an explosives expert for his time.  His actions were betrayed by a letter sent in secret.

There is a saying in England today – “Come back Guy Fawkes; all is forgiven !”.  With the political system as it is now, many feel the need for a major overhaul of the system.
