Kitten season has kicked into full gear and abandoned babies, frequently just born and with their umbilical cords still attached, are literally everywhere.

Irresponsible cat owners here feel that spaying/neutering is cruel, but I guess separating the youngsters from their nursing mothers and leaving them next to a trash can to fend for themselves when they aren’t even able to eat alone (or throwing them inside the waste container) isn’t cruel at all.

Of course, it’s impossible to know who the mother cats belong to, but it’s also highly improbable that a stray cat would pack her kittens into a carrying bag or a box and leave them in a dumpster. Year after year the same thing happens and year after year the overall situation is getting worse.

Although almost all animal rescuers are already getting hoarse from repeating that spay/neuter surgery is necessary for pets, far too many cats and dogs end up on the street and the animal shelters are overflowing with all of the new arrivals.

OK, rant over. These six babies were left in a cardboard box in front of the mall when they were maybe 10 days old. Two of them hadn’t even opened their eyes yet because their eyelids were glued shut with pus. They have been hand raised and bottle fed for a month now, as they were not progressing the way they should; moreover, all of them had a chlamydia infection and ringworm. Just great. Five of them finally pulled through and began to eat on their own, but the tiniest one, a little black girlie with a white tip to her tail, who had been the smallest and weakest from the very beginning, seemed to be dying a week ago. She had been given strong antibiotics for days and then the UV scan showed that her liver and stomach were enlarged, so more drugs (vitamins and hepatoprotectives) were added to her daily therapy.

She needed around the clock care, her chances were slim to none, but she didn’t want to die and she definitely wasn’t ready to give up. Bone skinny, feeble and frail, she valiantly fought for her life with every ounce of her fragile strength and she’s made it! Boy… that was close.

To our great joy, she doesn’t need to be fed with a syringe anymore, she eats on her own and even though she is at least two times smaller than any of her siblings, she is very serious about growing big. The little black girl already has a sponsor, our dear friend Kim, who named her Phoenix, as she defeated death by a hair’s breadth and sprang back to life.

If any of you would like to virtually adopt and name any of these cutie pies, we would be extremely grateful! And if you’re unable to sponsor one of them, please give us a hand with the costs of their upbringing which are already skyrocketing with some help from their vet bills.

LATEST

Kasper’s ghostly appearance says it all.

His kidneys are barely working, his blood levels of creatinine and urea are six times higher than normal, his pace has become significantly slower and he eats almost nothing now.

Heartbreaking as it is, he probably doesn’t have much time left as his entire body seems to be shutting down. However, he still spends his days in the yard together with his long time kitty friends, he enjoys cuddling and soaking up the sun and he doesn’t show any signs of pain, so we’ll let him live out whatever time he has left the way he wants and let him leave us on his own terms.

EARLIER NEWS

Lovely Kasper, who was saved from a shelter that burned to the ground in 2011 and has been through hell and back already is seriously ill. He’s had episodes of diarrhea every six months or so for years now and it was as though he had some gastrointestinal disorder, but when his stools have become loose and watery again, for the zillionth time, a UV scan was done and showed Kasper’s real problem is CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease).

His kidneys are failing and that’s why he’s had diarrhea on and off for ages.
He’s currently being fed a specific veterinary therapeutic diet with a restricted protein and phosphate content designed to support kidney function and minimize the complications of CKD. We’ve ordered Ipakitine, a chitosan-based phosphate binder and uremic reducer from Hungary for him and Sneska, as we can’t find it here in Serbia. At this point, it’s impossible to tell how much time he has left, but we’ll do our best to improve the quality of his life and slow the progression of the disease.

Any help for this sweet kitty boy is more than welcome!

Well, Hannah and Chantal have grown big and old enough to handle surgery, so both of them were spayed three days ago.

To our huge surprise, Chantal turned out to be a boy (who will most likely have his name changed to Chanty) as we’ve never even checked his gender – we were told he was a she and we accepted that statement at face value. However, he is definitely a boy and he was an abdominal cryptorchid; one of his testicles normally descended into scrotum, but it was almost totally stunted, while the other one was retained in the abdominal cavity and significantly bigger.

The result is that instead of a routine neuter surgery which would have lasted 15 minutes at most, the vet needed to make an incision along Chanty’s abdomen to remove the retained testicle and perform a surgical procedure which resembles a spay surgery for a female cat.

Both Hannah and Chanty were operated on under inhalation anesthesia and are now receiving antibiotics but they are recovering nicely and most importantly, they are not touching their wounds.

Please help us cover the costs of their surgeries with whatever you can spare. No amount is ever too small!

Please use the above ‘youcaring’ link to give any donation – thank you – SAV.

Please help us to raise money for Bak & Paja.

We have to raise €130 urgently.

Paypal: free.fly.dogs@gmail.com

Our boys Bak & Paja their whole life spent in different kennels. Last 2 years they are in one. Unfortunately, we were told that they have to moved from there for 3 days!!!! How? Where? How we can pay for new kennels?

We are always in debt. What a mess. 😦 Pleas help us to raise money for new kennels. Please!!!

New kennels costs 50 euros per month per dog + 15 euros for food per month per dog. Who are Bak and Paja??? Bak will say something about him by himself: I am Bak. 3 years ago I was a baby and lived at the dump with 6 brothers and sisters. They thought I wouldn’t survive. I was sick, very sick.

Now I’m healthy, gentle, beautiful, very good boy with only 13 kg, but I’m not happy. I’ve never had a home. I heard stories about it and promises I will have a home one day and people there will love me. But no one was asking, no one came to see me. I want only one thing from Santa, to find me a nice home. Let him bring kids presents. He doesn’t have to bring me, I’ll go there by my own. Just let him say me where that home is. Who is Paja?

Paja is the most active member of our doggy gang. He was taken from a junk pile at the Novi Sad Rail station in January. He had no hair. He had demodex which we managed to heal. He has a lot of HOUND qualities. He is very active, dominant, a true lieder. Very happy and friendly.

His perfect life space would be a big yard.  He has been castrated, vaccinated and microchipped.

Serbia: 22/4/16 – RIP Repic – A Wonderful Tribute From Danica.

Serbian Flag

FELIX

Repic rainbow

Repic is gone.

His story has pretty much been told but he deserves another one, the story of a beautiful, complicated and vigilant kitty boy with astonishing persistence, boundless courage and a heart of gold.

We want him to be remembered not as a broken, exhausted skinny creature that spent weeks fighting a losing battle with fading strength, but as the little distant yet adored shimmering star of our hearts he has always been. And he is getting his new story now, as soon as we’ve managed to pull ourselves together, the story of utter devotion, desperate hope, pure bravery, crushed dreams and eternal love.

The first few months of his sadly too short life were horrific, painted with fear and suffering and though he miraculously maintained his innate sweetness, he also became forever marked with the knowledge that pure evil exists. Oh yes, he was cuddly and affectionate back then when he was first taken off the streets, he was ready to give and receive love, but over the course of the following years something went wrong.

His fragile trust in humans was somehow betrayed again and he matured into a watchful, circumspect and reserved kitty boy, rather standoffish and adamant not to let anyone invade his personal space. However, he seemed to be happy here, living the kind of life he had chosen a long time ago and no one questioned his reasons for being wary – he was accepted just as he was.

Things were going at a regular slow pace until an almost routine vet evaluation of Repic’s condition a month ago, when we got a detailed insight into his health issues which shook us to the core. We were flabbergasted and horrified when we finally learned the truth about the consequences of the eye injury he suffered as a youngster and we suddenly realized he had never been authentically reserved and sedate – he was unwell. Extremely unwell. Unwell to the point that his life was at risk.

He fought with all of his might, we supported him every step of the way and the vet did everything that could be done and then some. None of us were ready to give up on our brave little fighter, not even when we all knew only a miracle could save him.

Twinkling through the deepest darkness, there was that tiny spark of hope that the impossible could happen if we fought long enough, strong enough, brave enough… And if it couldn’t happen, if a miracle didn’t occur, at least our courageous furry warrior would lose the battle of his life with all guns blazing.

After weeks of hopeless struggle, Repic had had enough. He must’ve been too tired, too weakened and too exhausted to see the point of holding on any longer. Maybe he saw the rainbow and felt that the time had come to cross into the light, maybe he knew he could leave with no fear as our love would be his shield wherever he soared. Maybe now he’s came to realize just how much he enriched our lives and has gotten to understand how he will carry on in every beat of our hearts. Maybe he has always known that goodbyes are not forever.

This is not a farewell, this is until we meet again.

So spread your wings and fly past the sun, sweet Repic, you’re finally free and there’re no limits anymore.
Those who leave behind a sparkling trail of glitter will never be forgotten.
