As we have previously stated on other posts, at the moment we are now devoting some of our time and efforts into supporting our Serbian campaigner friends who are trying to stop mass environmental destruction within their country,

Information and pictures relating to Serbian environmental issues can be seen on some of our previous posts:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2009/08/09/serbia-more-major-environmental-destruction-planned-your-help-needed-to-raise-global-awareness/

Now we move back to Stara Planina, where the government is attempting to turn beautiful mountain regions into a ski playground.

Below is a Google Earth image of the current destruction.

Please watch the excellent video below to obtain more information:

Take special note of the ‘conflict of interests’ detailed at 4 minutes 20 seconds into the video.

Below is the latest selection of stunning photographs of the biodiversity of the region which have been supplied to us.  Biodiversity which has taken millions of years to evolve, now being destroyed within months at the stroke of a pen by political wish.

The next stage of direct campaigning, which we hope all our global friends and supporters will be able to take part in, is currently in the ‘development’ stage.  As soon as the campaign is ready, we will provide full details on this site as to how you can help.

Meanwhile, enjoy the beautiful pictures of an existing ecosystem which is now rapidly being destroyed on a daily basis.  For what ? – money; the root of all evil !

We know you will agree with us – this IS one campaign that needs immediate attention – for the animals of the region and the flora of the region.  When it (they) have been destroyed, they will never return.  And that threat calls for action by whatever way we can undertake it.

Australia: Maybe Some Just Get a Kick Out of Animal Killing ? ! ?

Pigeon cull at silo site

SOPHIE WANDEL

12/08/2009 11:30:00 PM

PIGEONS might be dropping out of the sky around Port Lincoln but it is just part of an annual cull conducted by ABB Grain.

ABB has a procedure to control pigeons at all of its sites in South Australia and western Victoria, which is ongoing throughout the year.

The procedure includes deterring, trapping, storing or destroying pigeons in a way that minimises stress to the birds and also complies with guidelines set out by the RSPCA.

Port Lincoln RSPCA shelter manager Narelle Biddell said this latest cull involved poisoning the pigeons, which was considered humane, and generally the pigeons would die around the ABB site.

She said poison was put in the grain, which the birds ate and in turn euthanised them.

People should not be alarmed if they noticed a few dead pigeons around town she said, because the cull was controlled.

“Occasionally one bird might not eat enough grain and it will take a bit longer to die and it will fall somewhere else.”

Ms Biddell said this type of cull would continue until the end of the month.

A spokesperson for ABB Grain said pigeon control procedures put in place at the ABB site in Port Lincoln had proven effective.

The spokesperson said this was evidenced by the lack of pigeons in the town and ABB’s ongoing program of controlling flocks so they don’t become a nuisance.

“Trapping and precision shooting with air rifles are the preferred measure for controlling the pigeon population,” he said.

ABB had several other ways in which it minimised pigeon populations such as restricting roosting sites and maintaining good hygiene.

Pigeon

*** SAV Comment ***

Maybe some people just love killing animals and continue to learn nothing as a result !

If “ABB has a procedure to control pigeons”, then it is obviously not working if it has to be continually undertaken ! – we suggest that ABB need to carefully look at their practices of pigeon population control methods again.

Over the years, certain members of SAV have been very involved with attempts by councils, townships and cities to reduce the numbers of pigeons in their area.  We (pre-SAV) have worked with a superb Uk based organisation called PiCAS – the Pigeon Control Advisory Service.

http://www.picasuk.com/about_picasuk.html

PiCAS was orginally established by a man who became a great friend of Mark (SAV), a chap by the name of Guy Merchant.  Using Guys expert advice, back in the late 1990’s, Mark was able to take on and prevent the culling of pigeons by the Council in his own home town in Kent, England.

Deservedly, PiCAS has flourished over the following years to become the greatest pigeon control advisory service on the planet.  PiCAS is now divided into two prime operating sections:  PiCAS Uk and PiCAS International.

For detailed information about PiCAS International, which totally promotes humane, effective and sustainable bird control systems, please visit:

http://www.picasuk.com/picas_international.html

The PiCAS Uk site can be visited via the following link:

http://www.picasuk.com/about_picasuk.html

With reference to PiCAS, the following is taken from their site concerning lethal methods of bird control, which can be dangerous or even deadly to other animal species.

By working back in the 90’s with expert Guy, Mark learned many things about humane pigeon control; but the one that stood out was that by killing birds in an effort to reduce their numbers in an area, councils etc make the mistake of killing off only the weak and vulnerable birds.  The strong and fittest survive, those being the same birds which are able to reproduce most easily and produce more offspring, thus actually increasing the numbers of birds in any given area within a very short space of time.

Lethal bird control does not reduce bird numbers, it INCREASES them !!

This was proven by the City of Basel, Switzerland in the study undertaken by Weber and Haag.  http://anatomie.unibas.ch/IntegrativeBiology/haag/publications-haag.html

In Basel between 1961-1985, approximately 100,000 pigeons were killed by the inspectors of Basel.  The measures had no long lasting effect on the population.  The result of the investigations found that killing pigeons only rejuvenates the flock and has no long term effect on population.

Scientific research* and research carried out by the PiCAS Group has proven, conclusively, that all lethal methods of pigeon control are totally ineffective in the medium and long-term reduction of pigeon numbers.  The same applies to the control of virtually every other species of wild bird.  In areas where lethal control operations have been carried out there will be seen to be an initial short-term reduction in numbers but, within a matter of weeks, pigeon numbers will have increased back to the pre-cull figure and in most cases will have exceeded it. This is because killing adult pigeons in a feeding flock favours younger birds that would otherwise have a poorer chance of survival. Many older non-breeding birds are removed during these culling operations and the younger healthy breeding stock remains in situ and thrives as a result.

* Regulation of the street pigeon in Basel by Daniel Haag-Wackernagel, 1992

The main problem usually associated with pigeon population problems are ………… Humans.  They eat on the streets, throw down unwanted food (pies, bread, rolls, crumbs etc) – an open menu to hungry pigeons scouring any area for something nice to eat.

If you don’t want pigeons in your town or city, then start by getting humans to clean up their eating and waste disposal act !!

Lethal Bird Control (Culling)

The bird control services listed below are considered to be industry standard and are commonly recommended by commercial pest control contractors.

Poison Bait   Shooting
Cage Trapping   Bird of Prey   Case Study

Poison Bait

The use of poison bait (sometimes known as narcotic bait) is strictly controlled by DEFRA / Natural England in the UK and the criteria for its use is extremely strict.  A specific licence must be applied for in respect of each application and the only body that can approve and provide a licence is DEFRA or Natural England. Poison was used extensively throughout the UK in the 1960’s and 1970’s but due to the cruelty involved with its use licensing criteria became even stricter. Now it is rarely if ever used in the UK and Natural England confirmed to PiCAS UK, in late 2007, that few if any licences have been issued in the last 2-3 years. This is because the applicant must be able to demonstrate that the use of the poisoned bait will not cause unnecessary suffering to the target species. This is not possible, irrespective of how the poison is used.

The most common poison used for this purpose is a product called Avitrol, a poison which is used extensively in America. Even though America has extremely relaxed animal protection laws relative to the UK, its use is still highly controversial. Although the manufacturer suggests that the poison is a “chemical frightening agent” only, and that there will be “some mortality” associated with its use, in reality it is a mainstream poison that kills virtually every bird that takes the bait.

The target species is fed untreated grain in a secluded area for approximately 7 days and on the 8th day the untreated grain is substituted for grain treated with Avitrol. The client is told that the birds which have ingested the bait are then caught by the contractor and humanely killed; this is not the case. Once ingested the bait causes convulsions in the bird concerned and it dies a long and agonising death. The sight of a bird dying of Avitrol poisoning is a deeply distressing spectacle.

Not only does Avitrol kill the target species, it also has the potential for secondary poisoning. If a pigeon or gull that has been poisoned as part of a pest control operation is taken by a domestic cat or a protected bird of prey, the results can be lethal for the predator concerned.

A good example of this is in the

**************  city of Melbourne, Australia where two established breeding pairs of peregrine falcons were poisoned having taken a poisoned pigeon that had ingested a product such as Avitrol (the peregrine is the natural predator of the pigeon). There was public outcry when these much-loved birds (and their young in the nest) died.  **********************

This is the reality of poisons – they are indiscriminate. This barbaric method of control is inefficient and ineffective and should never be considered as a control option. Anybody that is offered this service by a pest control contractor should confirm that the contractor is bona fide and contact DEFRA or Natural England to confirm whether a licence application has been made.

There are serious legal implications for anyone found using poisons without a licence. Further information on the legality of lethal controls and where and when they can be used can be found on The Law page.

Dear all;I would just like to provide you with some information about one of my all time favourite animal welfare charities

They are SPANA – the Society for the Protection of ANimals Abroad.

SPANA provides free veterinary care for all working animals in some of the poorest regions of the world; care for animals that enables them to continue being of immense benefit to their owners, who very often depend on their animals for an income to support their families.

All services provided by SPANA in so many countries are given free of charge to the locals and are funded by the fantastic supporter network, of which I am very proud to be one !

Enjoy your trip around the SPANA website, learning about all the countries that they work in and the incredible veterinary support and care that they provide to working animals in these regions.

SPANA mobile clinics and refuge centres care for over 400,000 animals every year in these countires providing free veterinary care and advice to working animal owners.

SPANA teaches animal owners and children how to respect and care for animals through its educational programmes.

Once you have looked at the web site, I think that you will understand why I feel it so necessary to support the wonderful work of SPANA.

SPANA is a UK charity saving animals in the poorest countries in the world.

But they are not an ordinary animal charity – they know that working animals ensure that families can make a living.

SPANA was founded in 1923 by Kate Hosali and her daughter Nina, after they witnessed the mistreatment of animals on their travels through North Africa.

After their first trip Nina wrote:

“We realised that behind that façade of picturesque beauty there existed a vast sea of neglected animal suffering. How many tourists had glimpsed this hidden world and like us done nothing about it?”

They planned to set up a service that offered practical help and that acknowledged the extreme poverty of animal owners, lack of medicines and education.

Kate returned to Africa to treat as many animals as she could, while Nina set up SPANA in London.

About us

Some people think of SPANA as an animal charity that helps people. Others think we are a people charity that helps animals.

We’re happy to have it both ways. Without SPANA, people would be worse off and animals would be in pain and misery. Because of what we do, there are more happy, healthy animals, working hard and earning an income for their owners. This in turn puts food on the table and can pay for their children to go to school.

How we help animals and the families that depend on them

Free Veterinary CareOur mobile clinics and refuge centres care for over 400,000 animals every year.

EducationWe teach owners and children how to respect and care for animals.

Emergency programme – In times of crisis and disaster we are there to ensure both animals and people can get back on their feet.

Outreach programmeWe support projects that improve animal welfare all over the world.

South korea: Petition – To stop 2 million dogs being brutally killed in South Korea every year

South Kores

http://www.uniteddogs.com/stopkillingdogs/

By signing the petition I support the following:

  •  Animal torture should remain illegal in all forms and in all countries.
  • The government of South Korea has to ensure that Animal Protection Laws are followed in their country.
  • Dogs are people’s companions and helpers, not livestock for meat.
  • Dog farms, raising dogs for food and killing them for meat should be made illegal.
  • Selling dog meat in restaurants has to be banned.

This petition has already been signed by 123 776 people.

But the target is 1,000,000 signatures.

Please ensure yours is one of them.

Please crosspost.

Over 2 million dogs are brutally killed in South Korea every year.

That’s over 5,000 dogs a day who get strangled, burned, electrocuted or beaten to death for their meat.

The South Korean government has accepted Animal Protection Laws which make animal torture illegal, but those laws have never been properly enforced in the country. The dog meat industry continues to thrive and the officials are reluctant and indifferent to ban it. Oh, sorry, except during the 1988 Seoul Olympics and 2002 FIFA Cup when dog meat restaurants were forced to shut down temporarily in fear of bad impressions of South Korea.

Although forbidden to advertise themselves on main streets or in English, over 6,000 restaurants today serve dog meat in South Korea. And they don’t get closed down.

About the Green Party

The Green Party of England and Wales is a growing political movement promoting social and environmental justice through campaigns, direct action and the electoral process.

Elected Greens

Green representation is increasing at all levels of government. After the local and London elections in 2008, the Green Party of England and Wales had more than 100 parish councillors, 125 Principal Authority councillors, two members of the London Assembly and two Members of the European Parliament.

In Scotland, the Scottish Greens have two Members of the Scottish Parliament and since 2007 there has been one Green MLA in Northern Ireland.

Our Principal Authority councillors sit on Borough, District and County Councils all over England and Wales.

Policy:  Animal Protection

Annually in Britain, over 3 million animals are used in experiments. They are poisoned, scalded, infected with diseases, crippled, blinded, starved and brain damaged, all for scientific purposes.

Every year, there are 850 million animals slaughtered for food. Most of these animals are farmed intensively, never breathing fresh air or seeing daylight. They are highly susceptible to disease and antibiotics are used routinely to suppress infection and promote growth. Their needs are ignored in the pursuit of profit.

Animals are capable of feeling physical pain and mental distress: they deserve to be treated with respect, and protected from cruelty. However, today in Britian, their habitats are increasingly under threat, they are still used for ‘entertainment’ in circuses and zoos, and they are hunted for ‘sport’.

The Green Party believes that animals have the right to live in safety, without fear or pain caused by human exploitation. We seek a more peaceful world, where all life is respected and all cruelty challenged.

The Green Party would:

End all animal experiments, replacing them with more reliable non-animal alternatives.

End factory farming, stop promoting factory farming abroad and encourage a reduction in meat consumption. We would also ban live exports, and the genetic treatment of animals.

Protect habitats, ban bloodsports and end badger culling. We would ban the use of animals in circuses and abolish zoos.

Don’t we need animal experiments to develop new cures and medicines?

Experiments on animals are unreliable as a guide to human biology. Different species react differently to drugs and toxic substances. Many drugs that cause damaging side-effects in people have passed animal tests. There are viable alternatives to animal testing including epidemiology, the use of cell cultures, human tissue and computer simulation. The Green Party would redirect research funding to such alternatives.

We are not associated with groups using violence to promote animal rights. We campaign for a fairer world, where everyone is treated with respect. We are opposed to the use of violence or intimidation for any cause. We support non-violent direct action, and work with those groups using peaceful methods to publicise animal cruelty.

Serbia: Governments Attitude to Ineffectively Trying to Reduce Stray Dog Numbers by Mass Killing, Results in Politician Being Attacked by ….. Stray Dogs who Have Avoided the Killings and Produced Yet More Strays !

SERB0001

A senior member of Serbian president Boris Tadic’s party was
hospitalized after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs
outside parliament, reports said Friday.

Jelena Trivan, a parliamentary deputy and spokeswoman for Tadic’s ruling
Democratic Party, was rushed to hospital late Thursday after being attacked while walking to her car. after being treated for deep leg wounds, Trivan was described as “stable.”

Animal rights activists said the city was to blame for failing to solve the problem of Belgrade’s thousands of stray dogs.

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Pack+stray+dogs+maul+Serb+politician/1872062/story.html***

SAV Comment: ***

This attack is a direct consequence of Serbian authorities refusing to properly address the situation of stray (unowned) and roaming (owned) dogs using a No Kill strategy.

It is also proof that the current and past policy of the Serbian government to simply kill all animals in some futile attempt to try and reduce animal numbers is obviously not working.  If animal numbers were reduced by the (government / authorities) mass kill policy, then in effect, attacks on people by packs of stray dogs would be a thing of the past.

As there are still packs of stray dogs on the streets as this situation shows, then the current government policy is obviously not working, as we have always declared.

One thing which does work, which has been told to the Serbian government time and time again, with no effect, is for a national programme of no kill sterilisation for both stray (unowned) and roaming (owned) dogs.  As we have always said, sterilised animals cannot produce more offspring; unsterilised animals can.

We have asked for a programme where all owned pet animals are also sterilised, so that if these same animals go walkabout during the day, or are turned out daily as is often the case, they cannot mate with other animals and produce yet more stray dogs !

This is basic intelligence, but somehow the Serbian government do not seem able to grasp it.

The Serbian government needs to act now in light of this situation and introduce legislation which ensures that all stray (unowned) and roaming (owned) dogs are sterilised.  This is the only way that dog population numbers will reduce and that future attacks such as this do not happen again.

Things could now go one of two ways:

1)                  the Serbian government see sense and introduce no kill sterilisation for all dogs, thus resulting in reduced animal numbers in the long term; or

2)                  they decide on a mass kill policy for all stray and roaming animals, much as they have done in the past and at present, which given the attack now in the news by stray animals, actually does nothing in the way of reducing dog numbers.

One could say that this attack is a message to the politicians that their current policy of mass kill is wrong and that they are effectively reaping what they have sowed !

The attack was something which could have been avoided with some common sense, future thought and planning by the Serbian government.  They have not done it and this is the result.

NO KILL STERILISATION – the only way to go for reducing stray and roaming animal numbers.

And the proof yet again to the Serbian government is detailed in the evidence below:

Dogs_Multiply_Pyramid-1Cats_Multiply_Pyramid-1

The following is a link to a Serbian newspaper article on this incident and includes a picture of the politician who does nothing to address the stray dog problem.

http://www.b92.net/info/vesti/index.php?yyyy=2009&mm=08&dd=07&nav_category=16&nav_id=375224

The article is a good one in general, because it declares that Mr. Dragan  Djilas, Belgrade City Mayor, has declared that all the time he is the Mayor, nobody will kill dogs in Belgrade.  Instead they will build shelters, undertake sterilisations, and insist on responsible animal ownership.

This was fully supported by Elvir Burazerovic, the President of ORCA.

At last it may becoming clear to everyone that simply building animal shelters alone is the not the way to reduce animal numbers.  We thank Mayor Djilas who is the first politician bold enough to come forward and declare that simply killing animals is not the way to solve the population problem.  Mayor Djilas states that both responsible (owned) animal ownership and the control on the reproduction ability, ie. sterilisation, is the way to move forward.

Mayor Djilas would appear to echo our thoughts and declarations on animal numbers control in Serbia.  But at the moment it would appear that words are all that is coming from Mayor Djilas; the actual putting into practice of the words has not yet been seen.

For example, we are informed that at this time, there are two Shinter teams out on the streets trying to find the dogs which attacked Jelena Trivan; and we all know what Shinter teams are about ! – teams which WILL KILL dogs in Belgrade; in direct opposition to the words of Mayor Djilas !

If the shinters do find the dogs responsible for the attack, then the dogs will be put into the terrible OVCHA shelter.

Many people have commented in the newspaper that their children come first and that there is a need for the extermination of the dogs in Belgrade.  What these same people fail to realise is that there has been a policy of mass extermination of dogs in Serbian cities being attempted for many years.  And where are things now ? – judging by the fact that a politician has been attacked by stray dogs, who still exist, is it not fair to say that a policy of mass extermination to resolve the ‘problem’ is simply a pipe dream !

A policy of mass sterilisation and vaccination of dogs will see a reduction / eventual elimination of stray dog numbers, but until the Serbian government accepts this, and more importantly, puts a programme into place, nothing will ever change.

We have asked the Serbian government many times in the past for actual data showing how effective their policy of mass killing is in relation to reducing stray animal numbers.  We have never ever been provided with any data.

Does this not say something in itself ?????
