Samson is a huge FIV+ stray kitty boy which was probably between six and seven years old when we first took him in at the end of 2016.
He’s been having respiratory and eye problems on and off since he arrived at the shelter and has already been under treatment several times, but he’s constantly had copious eye discharge and used to hold his head down and low, like a mole.
We had the impression that something was wrong with his eyelids from the very beginning, but whenever we intended to deal with his problems once and for all, some other kitty needed to be taken to the vet more urgently and we simply couldn’t run into more debts.
However, he began to breathe heavily last week, his nose was stuffed up and his eyes were glued shut with pus, and we clearly saw it was an emergency. Samson was diagnosed with entropion and bronchitis on Sunday; surgical correction of entropion was performed on both of his eyes with temporary eyelid tacking. He couldn’t have permanent entropion surgery yet until he begins to breathe normally, because the vet was worried he wouldn’t survive the general anesthesia.
He is now receiving antibiotic injections and his eyes are being treated locally with eye drops and ointments. As soon as he gets well, he will have bilateral entropion surgery, so he will be able to keep his eyes wide open, like any healthy cat.
Hopefully things will work out and Samson will finally live the life he deserves.
Any kind of help for this beautiful house panther is more than welcome!

100 years ago, British women seized the moment.
On 6th February 1918, 100 years since the People Act was passed – and when women were first given the right to vote in the UK, today is a special day for women’s rights in the UK. We celebrate !

Back in 2012 we exposed work undertaken by Animal Equality regarding a pig farming facility in Murcia, Spain. The animals are bred for the food company El
Pozo (the second largest pig meat producers in Spain).
The undercover footage that was obtained at the time (2012) showed:
Workers hitting pigs on their heads with iron bars, jumping on top of
them, kicking them, and posing in front of a camera with the pigs
Workers attacking and killing pigs with metre length swords
The hitting of a pregnant pig with a bar before cutting her abdomen and
uterus with a knife whilst she’s still conscious, then pulling of piglets
out of her uterus and killing her because she isn’t fit for the
slaughterhouse
This pig, tied and immobilised, unsuccessfully tries to escape while the
workers for several minutes pulls out the piglets. They remove her
intestines, liver and other internal organs while she suffers terribly.
The animal is left in agony with internal organs spread over the ground
until she dies several minutes later.
You can see stills from the 2012 investigation here:
And so; it was very disturbing, but not surprising, that on 5/2/18; some 6 years later; we hear of yet further abuses at the same facility; via Animal Equality and Venus.
Animal Equality investigators documented extreme animal distress in a pig farm in Alhama de Murcia, Spain.
This Company-Farma, supplies the Spanish meat producer El Pozo, whose products are also available in Germany via Amazon and the supermarket chains Edeka and Rewe.
The cruel conditions in the factory have shocked even the veteran investigator team at Animal Equality.
– Cut-off ears with marks are reminiscent of the tortured animals.
– Many of the pigs show some serious injuries and unhealed fractures.
– Dying and dead animals lie between the living conspecifics. – Countless animals are deformed by gigantic abscesses. – Some animals suffer from severe cases of intestinal breakage.
These conditions are an animal welfare scandal – and also a health risk to the public.
If parts of the animals in the slaughterhouse are classified as “edible”, they end up in El Pozo products on the supermarket shelf.
We have reported these conditions to the relevant authorities and are calling for the closure of the facility.
In addition, we demand from El Pozo to take all necessary measures to prevent such animal suffering in the future.
Help us increase the pressure on El Pozo by asking Amazon, Edeka and Rewe to ban El Pozo products.
Please sign this petition of animal equality!

This further expose; some 6 years on from the first; just goes to show how ineffective the whole meat producing industry is in ensuring the welfare of animals in its system. We have exposed this so many times. There is a meat Mafia which ensures that regardless of what is found; industry supportive politicians will do anything to overturn the evidence and to get the finances for the industry rolling back in.
Is not the Live Exports ban by Brazil a typical example of this ?
“On the 5th of February we are told that the courts have introduced a ban on live exports:
The Federal Court in Brazil has just used evidence of his abuse to suspend live animal exports from the country — determining that live export does not reflect Brazil’s animal protection laws or its societal values, nor does it satisfy international standards to which Brazil is a signatory”.
Yet within a few hours of the ban being enforced by the courts; we are then informed that the injunction halting live exports from Brazil has been LIFTED !
This just shows what can be done with friends in high places – and how the meat mafia is closely linked with some politicians to ensure that, regardless of the evidence of cruelty presented, ‘their’ industry will continue as it is, turning blind eyes to animal abuse and at the same time attempting to present a squeaky clean image to the public – the consumer of their products.
The pig farm abuses shown above happened in Spain. Spain is a member state of the EU. Once again as we have said so many times before, the EU likes to have so many rules and regulations written down on paper; but the main problem is that it continues by never enforcing them in the way of prosecutions.
You have to ask what the whole MEP / EU Commission system is about when heads are turned in opposite directions to the obvious cruelties which are being presented.
Please check out the AE website for any immediate news on this incident.

UPDATE 6/2/18
Mark, I wanted to update you on the unfolding situation for animals in Brazil. A few hours ago the injunction halting live export from Brazil was lifted.
This didn’t surprise us, considering the exporters have powerful political allies and were always going to fight tooth and nail to keep their trade.
But with the historic Federal Court case examining the ‘merits’ of Brazil’s live export trade still pending, our fight to spare animals from the misery of live export is far from over.
I’ve been humbled by the overwhelming response to ourrequest for assistance over the past 24 hours. As a direct result, I have been able to send our investigators into the field, tasked with gathering the evidence needed to give this case the best possible chance of success.
Knowing what was at stake, I’m proud to say that they didn’t hesitate to head off on what will inevitably, once again, be a difficult and distressing mission.
The injunction may have been lifted, but exporters in Brazil are far from sitting comfortably. The Federal Court’s damning assessment of their industry stands and they know the global spotlight is now firmly on their industry.
Their days of abusing animals in secret and without any scrutiny are long gone. A Federal Court Judge saw through their excuses, others will too.
Much work lies ahead — I wouldn’t suggest otherwise to you. As you know, righting the wrongs inflicted on animals is always a lengthy battle that requires enormous commitment, effort and resilience. But, fuelled by the efforts of our investigators, we now have some wonderful allies. We are working side by side with some of Brazil’s finest advocates and lawyers to bring a permanent end to this terrible trade.
People everywhere are mobilising on behalf of animals. Thank you so much, Mark, for being one of them. And thank you for your unwavering support and faith in our work.
I know you’d want to be among the first to hear this incredible news. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest live exporters, and this decision could save thousands of animals from the pain and terror of having their eyes stabbed and tendons slashed.
But Mark, this ban could lift at any time…
Crucial to Brazil’s decision was Animals Australia’s evidence — gathered during risky investigations into the horrific fate of animals in this trade. As the industry increases the pressure on Brazil to reverse this decision, we urgently need to keep our investigators in the field to gather the evidence needed to secure a permanent ban on this trade.
Last year in Egypt we documented the harrowing final moments of a bruised, bloodied and frightened bull sent there from Brazil. Now, those responsible for his suffering have been finally called to account.
The Federal Court in Brazil has just used evidence of his abuse to suspend live animal exports from the country — determining that live export does not reflect Brazil’s animal protection laws or its societal values, nor does it satisfy international standards to which Brazil is a signatory.
Never has the importance of our investigator’s efforts, fuelled by your support, been more apparent.
Exporters will be actively seeking to have this decision overturned, which is why now, with public attention on this issue in Brazil, we must return to the field to show the extent of the suffering that this global industry is responsible for.
The evidence on which the judge based his determination was gathered by our investigators in the most grueling and distressing of circumstances. It formed the basis of the Federal Court petition submitted by our local colleagues, Brazilian animal advocacy group, Forum Animal.
The subsequent court ruling is unprecedented. It demonstrates that when the live export trade is viewed through independent eyes — through a lens devoid of politics and self-interest — the unnecessary suffering is obvious.
The battle is now on, between those seeing live export as responsible for animal welfare atrocities and those wanting to continue profiting from them.
That’s why we must send our investigators back into the field. We’ve been here before. We know the excuses the industry will make, the false picture they will paint. Further evidence is what they will fear most.
Mark, 12 months ago, live export was a little-known issue in Brazil, yet hundreds of thousands of animals were being subjected to this global trade in misery every year.
They were being shipped on the very same vessels that have delivered Australian and European animals to unspeakable suffering, abandoned in countries where horrors like tendon slashing and fully conscious slaughter are the norm.
It is your support Mark that set this chain of events in motion. And it is your support today that will give animals the best chance of being spared from this brutal industry, for good.
I have so often told you of the silent promise our investigators make animals in their darkest hours — that their suffering will not be in vain. That we will channel our grief and outrage at the injustice done to them into sparing further animals from extreme abuse.
We made this promise to the frightened bull from Brazil who we found bleeding from his eyes and legs in Egypt. We were with him during his final, heart-wrenching moments and we have spent every moment since telling his story.
To the live export industry he was just a number. But to a Federal Court Judge in Brazil he was a reason to end live export.
Now we must give Brazil’s judiciary the reasons to uphold this ban, for good.
For the animals, Lyn White AM
Investigations Director
.. and momentum for a live export ban in the UK is building all the time.
Dear Mark,
I’m delighted to report encouraging news in the fight to end UK live exports.
Theresa Villiers, MP, announced last week that Defra Secretary of State, Michael Gove, told her the government is “looking very seriously at a ban” on exporting live animals for slaughter.
On behalf of each animal who endures this cruel trade: a huge thank you to everyone who has signed and shared!
The petition is due to be debated in Parliament in just 21 days. Please, if you haven’t done so already, add your voice today.
And there’s more! Last week, over 50 MPs, policy makers and celebrities attended a parliamentary event to discuss live exports. Theresa Villiers also spoke at this event and summed up the sentiment of the whole room: “Inflicting this needless suffering on animals is not acceptable and it must be stopped”.
Momentum is building and, together, we will end live exports from the UK!

We are getting more visitors to the site from the Ukraine – so we welcome them all.
The following are a few links specifically aimed at animal welfare issues in the Ukraine. Please browse the links and take a positive look at all the work being undertaken to help animals and their welfare.
We are sure our visitor friends will be familiar with most of these; but they may also help them and other visitors to the site to find out more about the work being done in the Ukraine.
We will give links to sites and a very short copy of some of the words being used by the site(s).
If this kind of thing proves popular with visitors, we may cover animal welfare issues in other nations in a similar vain.

For the past 20 years, Naturewatch Foundation has been actively developing projects in Ukraine, working with municipalities to implement humane and sustainable stray dog population management schemes, following the recommendations of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OiE).
Our aims are: ……………………………………..
For the first time in Ukrainian history, the situation with animals in Ukraine was marked by not only negative news but there were also positive changes.
The most remarkable advancement was noticed in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, where the City Authorities shifted their policies towards humane ways of reduction stray animal population. Here the municipal services not only neuter and actively rehome stray dogs but also provide them vaccination and treatment. More than 3000 stray animals were neutered this year with the help of Kiev administration and European animal welfare organizations. Kiev Center for the Protection of Animals started implementing the regulations proposed by Naturewatch and thus using the European model of caring for animals.
Evpatoria / Vienna, 5 April 2013 FOUR PAWS continues its successful animal welfare initiative in Ukraine: Following the agreement between FOUR PAWS and the City Hall of Evpatoria, a new stray animal care project was launched in the Ukrainian town on 26 March 2013, bringing hope and salvation to many thousands of stray animals.
For the last 15 years, Naturewatch Foundation has been actively developing projects throughout Eastern Europe, working with municipalities and state veterinary services to implement humane and sustainable stray dog population management schemes, following the recommendations of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OiE).
“Friend” is a non-profitable charity organization and rehabilitation center for the homeless animals in Dnepropetrovsk City – Ukraine. We cannot help all street animals but we hope that with the help of sterilization program, volunteers and support locally and internationally the situation in the city and in Ukraine slowly will get better…
In recent years there have been several cases involving Member State export credit agencies providing export credit guarantees for exports to Ukraine of farm animal housing equipment that does not meet EU standards. Under the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, Ukraine has to approximate its animal welfare legislation to that of the EU. Animal products from Ukraine, e.g. poultry meat and egg products, are beginning to enter the EU market.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has pledged to help a shelter called Pif in the devastated city of Donetsk. They are a large-scale shelter taking in dogs from many areas impacted by the war. Most recently, they took in 19 dogs from Kramatorsk as citizens fled.
Thanks to the purchase of land and a building made possible by funds provided by an IFAW donor, we have found an alternative location for the nearly 300 resident dogs. Recently, they were transported two-by-two for safety reasons from the old location to the new one. There are still a lot of repairs and some construction work to be done, but for the time being the dogs are in a much safer environment than before.
The Animal Protection UA is a humane society founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law.
Mission
To provide aid for some of the hundreds of thousands of unwanted animals given to shelters in the Ukraine every year through donations, petitions, and store purchases.
Law No. 2120-VIII on strengthening liability for cruelty toward animals has entered into force in Ukraine August 4, after being published in the official newspaper of the Verkhovna Rada, “Holos Ukrainy.”
Civility of a country is determined by its attitude towards children, elderly people and animals. One cannot but agree with this statement. Unfortunately, when it comes to animals, Ukraine is far from being an example to follow. Thus, nowadays there is an urgent need to improve legislation on the proper pet care, identification and registration of animals.
Kyiv Society for the Protection of Animals (KSPA, or KCSPA) – is a nonprofit, non-government organization that specializes in the protection of animals, mainly targeting the city of Kyiv. Maksym Ryl’skiy, a distinguished poet, took part in its founding in 1960. The activity of the Society is regulated by the Statute and directed by the President. The Society advocates humanism towards all living creatures and takes a firm, uncompromising stand against the problem of homeless animals. We do not accept half measures of the authorized State institutions and their individual officials; we insist on an exhaustive and final solution to the problem of stray animals through modern and humane means. The Society is not supported by any government subsidies*); it is financed solely by membership fees and voluntary donations of citizens.
KSPA is a member of the Ukrainian Association for Protection of Animals (AZOU)
