Dear Mark,
The fate of hammerhead, silky and thresher sharks is in our hands.
In the next few weeks, six nations will be gathering at an international meeting to decide whether to increase protections for these magnificent creatures.
In the past, my country of Costa Rica has led the way in the international protection of sharks. And I need you to take one simple action to further this protection.

I’ve been blessed with being able to swim in schools of hammerheads, silkies and threshers in the Pacific. It was one of those moments of a lifetime. And my goal is to protect the sharks and the oceans for future generations.

Thanks,
Randall Arauz,
International Director
Turtle Island Restoration Network

PS – Costa Rica has been a key player in the international shark protection arena and, with your show of support, can continue to play that role. Please add your name to the petition today!

Dear friend,
The Japanese whaling fleet is in the Southern Ocean right now and plans to kill 333 minke whales this season.
If left unchallenged, this plan could continue for the next 12 years.
Sign below and urge the Australian Government to take immediate action to stop lethal whaling in the Southern Ocean.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Mark,
Thanks for sending a message to Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and speaking up for whales. More than 20,000 people have now urged the Australian Government to take action to end Japan’s whaling program for good.
The whaling fleet is in the Southern Ocean right now and we need more voices quick. The more noise we make, the more likely we are to get a response from the Australian Government.
Can you get your friends and family to take a stand for whales too?
Here’s how:
1. Forward the text below the dotted line to your friends by email
Thanks for being a part of this,

Each year in Taiji, Japan; dolphins are chased into a small cove and butchered in the most horrific and cruel way imaginable. These hunts are subsidized by the dolphin captivity industry, which pays top money for a few “show quality” dolphins that are ripped from their families and sold on to aquatic centres in order to perform stupid tricks for a brain dead audience, whilst the rest of the captured pod is killed for meat. This dolphin meat has been proven to be laden with mercury and PCBs, all of which are very harmful to Japanese citizens who eat the meat.
Due to a major attempt to cover up the hunt by the Japanese government (which drastically fails in the rest of the world); most Japanese citizens don’t even know that the hunts exist in their land. The Japanese government very much supports the dolphin killers, whilst denying any public health issues. Both issues are now being widely publicised to the world through international campaign networks, the internet and film such as ‘The Cove’.
The Japanese government are still attempting to resist worldwide actions taken against them for both dolphin and for whale slaughter; which takes place each year under the false guise of ‘Scientific research’. The Japanese government may believe there are no public health issues for its own citizens regarding the dolphin slaughter, and may kid itself that it needs to undertake ‘research’ in whales as it falsely claimed for many years; but thanks to global communication processes nowdays, the rest of the world instantly knows the real truth; this is why Japan (as a nation) is hated internationally by the environmental movement and also why so many protests are taking place outside its embassies located around the world.
There is a simple way to resolve this – that is for Japan to stop the killing of both dolphins and whales now. Animal welfare campaigners who speak out against the dolphin murders are now being directly targeted – the latest being Mr Ric O’Barry who has been held at Tokyo’s Narita airport since Monday 18th January.
Mr O’Barry is a longtime leader in opposition to the annual Taiji (town) dolphin hunt, which has gained a negative worldwide reputation since the release and viewing of the film ‘The Cove’. ‘The Cove’ has shown the teal cruelty of Japan to the rest of the world; which has led to a worldwide hatred for the actions of Japan on whales and dolphins ever since.
There is no reason whatsoever why Mr O’Barry should be held by Japan. He has always been very careful not to violate any laws, whilst at the same time working within the legal system of Japan. If Japan thinks their actions will result in bad publicity for the organisation named ‘Sea Shepherd’, which is most probably why Mr O’Barry is now being held; then Japan is very wrong.
The world largely supports the actions of Sea Shepherd whilst undertaking a national hatred of the Japanese people and what they do in murdering the natural wonders of our oceans.
It is time for Japan to change, and change now – immediately. For only when Japan does take actions to ban both the dolphin murders and whale murders which it undertakes at present; only then will it be accepted back into the international community as a nation which has respect of others for attempts to preserve the wonderful creatures of our oceans. All the time the Japanese led killings continue, Japan will continue to be singled out and targeted for what it is – simply murderers of the wonderful wildlife of the world’s oceans; nothing more, nothing less.
Japan needs to take action and to take it immediately – ban the killing of dolphins and whales now, today.
Yours truly,
YOUR Name and nationality.

BREAKING: TV Animal supplier ‘Amazing Animals’ exposed
A polar bear is brought out to a stage in front of a large crowd. Her handler makes her climb onto a podium on command. Two lions are made to stand in a line up on their back legs when ordered. A leopard is made to jump from a podium and balance on two ropes. A monkey is brought out on a lead, a sloth carried out hanging on a pole for crowds to stare at.
A white tiger pacing back and forth at a small window in their enclosure, a hippo walking in circles in their barren home, a hyena and meerkat pacing back and forth as visitors watched. See the full video of our findings here:
With your help CAPS has been campaigning against the use of animals in the TV and media for years, fighting for those animals who are exploited for entertainment.
As a nation which demands the banning of wild animals in circuses, we all recognise that forcing animals to perform in anyway is cruel and outdated. We are appealing to the BBC, film makers and companies to cease working with this company and instead, embrace animal-friendly methods like CGI. Technology is improving everyday so there is no excuse to use live animals.
We need your help! TAKE ACTION!
View and share our campaign videos showing the cruel treatment of lions, tigers, leopards, a polar bear and other animals
Boycott films which use live animals
Complain to companies you see using live animals in their promotions and let us know when you spot one
Amazing Animals is just one company out of many which uses animals in this way but these findings give us a glimpse of what life can be like for animals when away from the cameras and TV sets. Please speak out for these animals who are held captive by Amazing Animals. Please help us to open up this industry to scrutiny, by taking action today.
For the animals.

Win for Canada Lynx: Idaho Must Take Action on Trapping
In a decision that will save lynx from cruel trapping deaths, a federal district court found on Monday that the great snow cats living in the Panhandle and Clearwater regions of Idaho are in danger of incidental trapping — so restrictions on trapping in those areas are needed. Lynx are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, and the court found that trapping in northern Idaho is likely to illegally harm them. In 2014 the Center for Biological Diversity and allies sued Idaho for allowing trapping in lynx habitat. This week the court directed Idaho to alter its regulations to prevent future lynx deaths. It ordered the state to submit a plan to the court within 90 days, with terms that will truly protect lynx in the northern part of the state. “We’re relieved that the court has ordered Idaho to do more to protect lynx,” said the Center’s Andrea Santarsiere. “Four lynx have been incidentally trapped in Idaho in the past four years, and the court agreed with us today that the state cannot stand idly by and watch while indiscriminate traps harm these rare and federally protected cats.” Read more in The Spokesman-Review.

Good News! African Lions Gain Protection Under the Endangered Species Act
Thank you for urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect lions under the Endangered Species Act and to prohibit the importation of lion trophies. Good news: As a result of global outrage following Cecil the lion’s death, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that it will strengthen conservation efforts and crack down on trophy hunting by protecting two subspecies of African lions under the Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will list one lion subspecies native to India and Central and Western Africa as endangered and another native to Eastern and Southern Africa as threatened. USFWS Director Dan Ashe also issued an order that would make it more difficult for those accused of violating wildlife laws to acquire permits and licensing for importing sport-hunted trophies. All these decisions are huge steps forward in protecting African lions for generations to come. Inspired to do more to protect endangered species? Stand with the Endangered Species Coalition, and take the pledge to defend the Endangered Species Act from congressional attacks.

Elephants Win: Hong Kong Moves to Crush Ivory Trade
Taylor Hill is an associate editor at TakePart covering environment and wildlife.
Hong Kong chief executive Leung Chun-ying announced Wednesday that his government will end its legal ivory trade.
That market is considered a facilitator of illegal ivory transport into mainland China, the world’s largest consumer of smuggled ivory.
“The government is very concerned about the illegal poaching of elephants in Africa,” Leung told Hong Kong’s legislative council on Wednesday. “It will kick-start legislative procedures as soon as possible to ban the import and export of elephant hunting trophies.” He added that the government will “explore other appropriate measures,” including a phaseout of the local ivory trade and stiffer penalties for smuggling and trading endangered species.
Wildlife conservation groups are hailing the announcement as a milestone in the movement to ban all ivory trade—a position the Chinese and U.S. presidents took in 2015.
“We expect action will be taken this year, but what we don’t know is what the timeline will look like,” said WildAid chief executive Peter Knights. “He announced a phaseout, so obviously the quicker the better. The most important thing is that they reveal a timeline this year.”
WildAid has been working in China and Hong Kong since 2011 to educate the public on how the country’s legal ivory trade fuels illegal poaching of Africa’s elephants.
“We’re losing 30,000 elephants a year in Africa, and we believe most of that ivory is being traded through legal channels,” Knights said.
In a report released last year, World Wildlife Fund Hong Kong showed the loopholes in the legal ivory trade that allow illegal tusks to infiltrate the market. Ivory from the city’s stockpile obtained prior to 1990 can be legally sold. But lax enforcement has allowed the 400 or so licensed traders to use legal ivory permits as a front to sell contraband tusks.
The practice has helped lead to the rapid decline of African elephants, whose population has fallen from between 3 million and 5 million in the early 1900s to around 470,000 today. If poaching keeps its current pace, scientists say the species could be extinct within two decades.
Hong Kong’s move comes as the price of elephant ivory plummets. In a report by conservation group Save the Elephants, the cost of raw ivory on the black market has fallen by almost half over the past 18 months. Ivory tripled in value in the four years leading up to 2014 but dropped from a high of $2,100 per kilogram to $1,100 per kilogram by November 2015.
Researchers Lucy Vigne and Esmond Martin of Save the Elephants said the price drop is a result of China’s growing public awareness about illegal ivory and the government’s intent to shut down the domestic ivory trade.
“Everybody in the ivory business in China is waiting and wondering what will happen next, and are gloomy that their centuries-long tradition of ivory carving may be coming to an end, hoping at least that it can be phased out gradually,” Vigne and Martin said in a statement.
“If the trade closes, the value of ivory as an investment depreciates,” Knights said. “We see Hong Kong prices going down because of the public backlash against ivory, and that should have an impact on poaching. Couple that with stepped-up efforts in Africa to deter poachers, and the ivory trade ends up getting squeezed at both ends.”

Deer Tortured In Texas – Take Action.
Deer slaughtered?
Not if we can help it.
Here’s the scoop:
The Sun City Texas Community Association is AGAIN reportedly planning to trap deer and ship them to slaughterhouses to try to reduce their local populations.
Think of how completely terrifying it would be to get caught in a net, not knowing what would happen next. These traumatized deer try in vain to escape and can badly injure themselves in the process. Bucks are then held down while their antlers are sawed off with loud power tools. Bleeding and scared, the highly sensitive animals are then transported in noisy trucks to the slaughterhouse, where they’re unloaded and finally killed.
These cruel methods tear wild families apart, often leaving young and weak animals to starve. And for what? These methods don’t even work! Populations have been known to SPIKE because there’s more food to go around after these mass killings.
Please urge the Sun City Texas Community Association to commit to humane control methods that work, then forward this e-mail to everyone you can.
Please send POLITE comments to:

Rabbits form an integral part of everyone’s childhood. From a family pet, to Beatrix Potter’s mischievous Peter Rabbit, to the lovable cartoon character Bugs Bunny, or the falsely accused Roger Rabbit. But, this year, the lives of 330 million rabbits in Europe will be anything but a fairy tale.
Rabbits are the most caged farmed animal in Europe.
For them, life is a horror story, permanently confined in tiny, barren cages, unable to hop, skip or jump.
You are one of over 381,620 people who have already told Europe’s Agriculture Ministers and the European Parliament it’s time to End the Cage Age for rabbits. Thank you so much for signing Compassion’s petition.
Now, will you get us to the next big milestone? Can you help us secure over half a million signatures and make this a petition that Europe’s policymakers cannot ignore?

Here are some easy ways you can grow the petition:
This year alone, there will be over 300 million reasons to end the caging of farmed rabbits.
With your support, we will be able to present Europe’s Agriculture Ministers and the European Parliament with a public demand they cannot ignore.
Please help us secure half a million voices to end this horror story.
Thank you,
James West – Campaign Manager

13,000 Australian LIVE EXPORT animals stricken at sea:
LiveExport – GlobalVoice4Animals
Latest news on the Ocean Outback indicates it is being held well out to sea (about 110 km), west of Perth.
The sea conditions in the area are moderate to rough, and temperatures are high, all of which is not very good at all for the welfare of the animals.
Of course, the exporter’s spokesman continues to report that it’s all good on board, along with the broken record like announcements about the so called excellent ventilation characteristics of the ship. However, the facts are not changed by his childish propaganda. Animals are dying. It should be noted that the ship went well beyond 50 km out, so far out that, at one point, it seriously looked like it was being taken out of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone, which is 320 km out. No doubt a main reason to go so far out would have been to get rid of the evidence of the deaths.

This is day 11 of this sorry saga, and nothing of substance has progressed. The ship is not going to the Middle East, realistically it can’t in its present condition. It can really only make it to a South East Asian destination, but sheep are not wanted there. So, no matter what, the sheep will have to be taken off this ship.
The Ocean Drover is currently less than 2 days north of Perth en route to Portland, Victoria. It’s possible that it could be diverted to Fremantle as part of a possible the contingency plan, but that would take several days, and the load would be well below its carrying capacity. We also believe that mixing the stranded consignment (which no longer has a permit to be sent to Israel) with others would be out of the question due mainly to quarantine rules. The upshot is, we don’t believe the Ocean Drover will be used as a replacement ship.
There is another livestock ship, the Lincoln Express, which has rather suspiciously been moored off the coast of Fremantle for several days now. It is possible that it is in the process of being chartered as a replacement vessel, however, as we mentioned earlier, to our knowledge, there is no longer a destination for the stranded consignment.
This is dragging on and on, and there is no relief in sight for the animals.
We will continue to be bombarded with all the usual spin from the industry about how good the conditions are on this ship. But have a good look at this photo (courtesy of Animals Australia)…it graphically shows the filth the animals are being kept in. It was taken only on day 7 of this fiasco, we are now at day 11. Bear in mind that this only shows the edge of the vessel, it would have been much worse internally. This is from the operator whose management continually announces to the world that it is the best of any of them and animal welfare is its priority. Well, if this is the best, and if this is its standard of animal welfare ‘priority’, it speaks volumes about the animal welfare standards of the whole industry.
We also have to ask why it is that this industry is able to refuse RSPCA inspections, and why it is that they can dictate there own terms, in particular the timing, of any inspections it might begrudgingly agree to? It’s thoroughly indicative of a whitewash and a cover up. As a result of the 2011 revelations on 4 Corners, the industry promised that things would immediately change, that it would comply with community expectations, and that the situation had heralded in a new dawn of transparency, so that the public could have confidence that things really had changed. Well, since that time, the opposite has been the case, and in fact, its getting more and more opaque. Of course, there is a good reason for this; it simply cannot allow transparency, because that would expose the truth of the inherent, systemic cruelty of the trade.
We’d like to raise one more point of observation for now; there is an extraordinary lack of coverage of this obvious and developing animal welfare crisis on the part of Australia’s media. There have been a few narrow, brief articles here and there, all of which insist on prominently promulgating the industry’s repetitive, lengthy and patronising spin, but there has been no effort made by any media outlet to pursue, for themselves, the actual truth. That is an abject journalistic failure, and it is one of the main reasons this cruel industry still exists in this country.
Shame Australia, shame shame shame!
Here’s a typical example, but note the photo in it of conditions in a pen on the ship. It would have been selected as a better one to show by this pro live export rag, yet it is still shows how filthy things are!
TO GET INVOLVED AND TAKE ACTION:
Dear Mark
Sorry for the lack of communication over the debacle that is the Ocean Outback – it has been a hectic week and most of our outreach now is through facebook. 13,000 animals set sail for brutal slaughter in Israel’s Dabbah abattoir on 29 December last year after loading on the 28th and 29th at Fremantle Port. They returned to anchorage off Fremantle on the 30th and 11 days after the first animals were loaded, suffering temperatures even exceeding 40 degrees, they are still on there, apart from the (reported) 12 sheep and two cattle who have died so far – the lucky ones. As this is written, they still sit off the coast of Fremantle in limbo.
Please join Stop Live Exports in protesting loudly at the abhorrent treatment the victims of this trade suffer abroad AND here.
Mark Pearson, Animal Justice Party NSW MP is flying over to join us – Mark is a long time animal activist, once heading up Animal Liberation NSW and is only the second person IN THE WORLD, to be elected to Parliament on an animal protection platform.

SAV Comment – we do not know the eventual fate of the bear.
Target: Yury Chaika, Prosecutor General of Russia
Goal: Find and punish the person who fed a polar bear explosives.
A polar bear suffered greatly after consuming explosives on a construction site.
A video was posted on YouTube displaying the bear writhing in agony and spitting up blood. Though not yet proven, it is believed that a worker on the site deliberately fed the bear the explosives and recorded the result. Demand that Russia find and prosecute the person responsible for the sadistic torture of an innocent animal.
Blood poured from the polar bear’s snout after she ingested explosives allegedly laid out for her by an on-site worker. The widely distributed video shows the bear rolling around in the snow in complete agony.
Authorities believe that the on-duty cook is responsible for this reprehensible action, though nothing has been proven. The bear had become a regular visitor to the construction site in Wrangel Island, Russia. The construction workers often left food out for her. Eventually, the bear began trusting the workers enough to bring her cub along on her regular visits. Fortunately, the cub did not accompany her on this day.
No animal should be tortured for any reason. However, the idea that this was done for amusement is especially horrific. Polar bears are a protected species in Russia and it is illegal to cause deliberate harm to them. The person responsible for the sadistic torture of this animal should receive the maximum penalty by law. Sign below to demand a thorough investigation into this incident and the harshest punishment for the person responsible.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Prosecutor General Chaika,
A mother polar bear was allegedly fed explosives and tortured on a construction site. Per a widely distributed video on YouTube, the bear writhed in agony and blood poured from her snout. We demand that the person responsible for this cruelty be found and reprimanded to the highest degree.
The mother bear and her cub were regular visitors to the construction site in Wrangel Island, Russia. They’d become friendly with the construction workers and even accepted food from them. This trusting relationship was violated when the mother bear consumed explosives on the site. She immediately expelled blood from her nose and ran around in evident pain. Luckily, her cub was not on site at the time of the incident.
If this incident was a deliberate act of torture, it cannot go unpunished.
We demand that you perform a thorough investigation into this incident and impose the maximum punishment on the person responsible.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
