What is a ‘Written Declaration’ ?

A written declaration is a text of a maximum of 200 words on a matter falling within the European Union’s sphere of activities.  Written declarations are printed in all the official languages, distributed and entered in a register.
MEPs can use written declarations to launch or relaunch a debate on a subject that comes within the EU’s remit.

A group of up to five MEPs can submit a written declaration by presenting a text to be signed by their colleagues.  If the declaration is signed by a majority of the MEPs, it is forwarded to the President, who announces it in plenary.
At the end of the part-session, the declaration is forwarded to the institutions named in the text, together with the names of the signatories.
It is included in the minutes of the sitting at which it is announced.
Publication in the minutes closes the procedure.

Declarations lapse after three months in the register if they have not been signed by at least half the MEPs.

Written Declaration 0026/2011 has been produced by the following MEP’s:

Adina Valean, Daciana Sarbu, Elisabeth Jeggle and Janusz Wojciechowski.

Subject: Industrial pig farm in Derbyshire?

At pig factory farms, adult sows are pregnant for most of their lives. Their piglets are artificially weaned when they’re 3-4 weeks old (natural weaning takes place at 11-14 weeks), and the sows are inseminated again one week after weaning. While pregnant, the sows are kept in stalls too small for them to move around. They bite the bars of their cages in their fever to get free.

Midland Pig Producers (MPP) wants to build a pig factory farm in a pristine field in Derbyshire. The factory farm would house 2,500 breeding sows, and 25,000 pigs total. 1,000 pigs would be slaughtered every week. If approved, the facility would be the third largest pig factory farm in the UK.

The Derbyshire County Council can stop Midland Pig Producers from building this enormous factory farm, but time is short — they may vote as soon as 11 July.

Please sign the petition to tell them to vote no.

Pig factory farms aren’t only horrible for the pigs who live and die there — they’re also extremely bad for the environment and the people who live nearby. According to the UN, livestock production accounts for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide (cars and transport account for just 14%). Toxic gases from factory farms have also been known to cause illness in nearby humans, and a University of Missouri report cited that property values within two tenths of a kilometre of factory farms decreased by 88.3%.

Perhaps worst of all, pig factory farms pump their piglets full of antibiotics, which dramatically increases the incidence of drug-resistant diseases (like MRSA) that can spread from pigs to humans. In America last year, more people died from MRSA than AIDS.

Huge factory farms are common in America, but not so in the UK. A “no” vote from the Derbyshire County Council could set an important precedent to help keep it that way.

Please sign the petition today to tell the Derbyshire County Council to block MPP’s plans for its new factory farm:

International: Petition – End The Capture of Wild Dolphins For Pathetic Holiday / Tourist Resorts.

Please support this important campaign. Thanks – SAV.

Dear friends,

The pod was swimming peacefully in Samoa when nets closed in from behind — trapping 25 wild dolphins for a luxury resort’s latest exhibit. They are now locked in tiny pens, starved of food — but we can free them.

For wild dolphins captivity is torture, their powerful sonar bounces off the walls back at them — as if they are trapped in an endless house of mirrors. Most die young from stress induced illness, but some even commit suicide. If the wealthy Resorts World Sentosa succeeds in keeping them captive then half the dolphins will die in the first 2 years — and it will legitimise the widely banned practice of capturing dolphins in the wild. We can’t let that happen — let’s use our voices to set them free.

Resorts World was forced to abandon plans for a whale shark exhibit two years ago because of the huge outcry that threatened their reputation. Let’s build a massive call now to free these intelligent, beautiful creatures — and make this a turning point in the fight to end the global wild-dolphin trade. When we reach 500,000 our petition will be delivered to Resorts World and the media. Sign now and forward this to everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/saddest_dolphins

The appallingly cruel wild-dolphin industry has been banned in nations from the UK to Costa Rica. The terrifying capture process involves driving the dolphins to shallow water, where up to half drown or die of their injuries before they are even caught. If we force Resorts World to free these wild dolphins now it will send a powerful message to all other resorts, and help break the back of the capture industry. We can also give these dolphins a second chance in life — renowned dolphin expert Ric O’Barry has offered to rehabilitate them back into the wild.

Resorts World argues that their “interactive spa program” will help heal sick and disabled children – but there is no scientific evidence to support this technique, which sees desperate parents pay thousands in pursuit of an imaginary cure. They also claim their programs aid conservation – but dolphin capture drives are also hunting expeditions. The “display-worthy” dolphins are spared, while the others are butchered. By ordering wild-caught dolphins, Resorts World is driving up demand for these barbaric hunts.

The trade of wild-captured dolphins must end. The world is moving slowly but surely in this direction, and our intervention could set a valuable precedent. Resorts World has buckled under pressure before, and it can’t afford another hit to its image. Let’s join our voices urgently to free the world’s saddest dolphins, and win a crucial battle in the fight to save all wild dolphins from short, miserable lives in captivity. Sign now and send this to family and friends:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/saddest_dolphins

Wild dolphins are incredibly playful, social and caring, as well as extremely intelligent — they are utterly captivating creatures. In the world we all wish for, dolphins are not hunted, trapped and broken — they are treated with the respect that all life deserves. Today, as we work for their freedom, we are taking a small but important step towards making that world a reality.

With hope,

Ricken, Ben, Morgan, Bobbi, Alice, Shibayan and the whole Avaaz team

Personally, we at SAV do not feel that this is solely and EU citizen issue.  We feel that the more videos sent from around the world, the more ‘global’ will be the message sent to Romanian politicians.  They need to be informed how the WORLD feels about their floundering for the strays.

Further News 07/06:

Today’s result:
The law was sent back to Commissions after a long debate in the Deputies Chamber.
Toader PDL proposed that the votes be secret but V. Ponta PSD said that the Union will not vote if the vote is hidden, as every deputy has to take responsability for their vote. .
Huge thanks to all the supporters that stood up at the balconies in the Deputies Chamber and to those coming all over the country.

Love,

Take Action to close Guzoo and re-home its animals!

“Since it opened its gates in 1990, the Guzoo Animal Farm, a private zoo approximately 100 kilometres northeast of Calgary, has been subject to numerous complaints. Despite the issues put foreword, the Alberta Sustainable Resource Department has continued to renew its temporary operating licence. These renewals always come with specific conditions calling for improvements in cages, water, shelter and mental stimulation for the animals. The conditions are often the ones previously set, yet not met, in a previous licensing period.

In a report by wildlife rehabilitator Clio Smeeton and conservation biologist Sian Waters it was said that the Guzoo ‘compares unfavourably to some zoos in the developing world who possess far less resources and have far more serious problems to overcome. It would appear that the Province of Alberta takes less interest in their zoos than many governments in the developing world do in theirs. Many animals at GuZoo are still not having even their basic needs met.’

Furthermore, the Guzoo’s policies show a potential hazard to the public. Lack of hygiene, such as leaving feces or dead animal carcasses (food for carnivores) in cages for several days, causes a contamination concern for human visitors. The Guzoo also allows and encourages visitors to interact with potentially dangerous animals, such as lions, tigers, bears, and lynxes.

With this petition, we ask the Alberta Government to revoke the Guzoo’s temporary operating licence.
