ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATIONS FROM THE WORLD JOINED FORCES TO STOP MASS KILLING OF STRAY DOGS IN SERBIA

The notorious public shelter “Naš dom” in Požega has admitted on TV B92 that last year they euthansed 1280 dogs out of 1350 that captured and they also released a document giving their estimates for this year.

They will aim to catch 1500 dogs out of which 1300 will be euthanised.

These dogs are not humanly euthanised.

In the past washing up liquid has been injected into dogs which then suffered for hours and died a slow agonizing death. No one is allowed access to this pound, so we can only imagine the horrors the dogs endure. No food, no water, dogs are eating each other…

Things have not changed. If anything, things have got worse – this government institution is now openly saying that they will kill 90% of dogs.

Nis dog capture

Also, the city of Niš has started rounding all homeless animals up to be euthanised after an attack on elderly woman by a pack of dogs.

The dogcatchers have been watched by Serbian activists: 69 dogs are in the pound, which is not equipped to even have 20 dogs safely. The dogcatchers will be out getting more.

THIS IS ILLEGAL UNDER THE SERBIAN ANIMAL WELFARE LAW.

Therefore, 56 animal welfare associations from the world and 40 from Serbia have joined forces to stop proposed massacre of innocent dogs.

To whom it might concern,

We strongly condemn  JKP “ Naš Dom” Pozega  for their behavior  in terms of treatment of abandoned animals. The Animal Welfare Act in Serbia clearly stipulates that abandoned animals cannot be killed except in exceptional circumstances, but must be housed and cared for in the shelters, yet we learned that JKP “ Naš Dom” is  planning to kill 90% of the dogs that  they catch in 2016.

On the news tonight (16.03.2016 ),  on the TV station  B92, JKP “ Naš Dom”  admitted that in year  2015  out of 1350  captured dogs,  1280 were killed!

We are outraged and appalled by such disrespect of the current law by an institution  JKP “ Naš Dom”  which is governed by the state! This institution,  clearly  feels they’re above the law!  We will be notifying all competent authorities in the EU and beyond and will be looking into taking measures to prevent future illegal slaughter of animals in Serbia.

We also must add that we are aware of current lynch on street dogs in Nis which is almost announced publicly as form of revenge for the attack  carried out on an elderly woman by a pack of dogs. We are also aware of all the unlawful poisonings and killings of animals which are happening in Serbia  because the  institutions governed by the state assigned to deal with the problem   are not following the laws and therefore are failing to deal with the problem  as well as not dealing with irresponsible owners  who abandon their  animals and are part of the problem.

So far we have pointed out how to humanely solve the problem of abandoned animals and for us it is devastating that Serbia does not actually apply these measures. Measures, which are prescribed by the Law.

We are disgusted with the way the law in Serbia is circumvented and we will be taking all measures in our power to stop the planned killing of 1300 animals  by JKP “ Naš Dom” in 2016.

Sincerely,

YOUR NAME and Nationality.

——————————————————–

We’re waiting patiently for Serbia to do the right thing!

All the time it undertakes killing such as this which are ILLIGAL under Serbian animal welfare laws, the nation of Serbia should not be allowed to become an EU member state – it is currently a ‘Candidate Country’.

Under EU membership rules, Serbia must be seen to be enforcing the ‘rule of law’ – ie. enforcing strictly its own national legislations, in order to even be considered for membership.

As Serbian officials are corrupt and taking the money which should be for animals, and which instead is being syphoned off for their own interests and gain, Serbia is not a fit nation for EU membership.

For the past 10 years or more we have argued constantly that stray animal sterilisation is the only way to reduce stray animal numbers.  Officials do not consider our requests as they want to be paid from central government for every dog which they still illegally kill  This can be up to 500 Euros per dog – consider the average wage is around 300 Euros per month – so corruption pays in the eyes of these people !

So for corrupt officials, it is not in their interests to adopt a policy of animal sterilisation and gradual numbers reductions, as it is removing their ‘kill and take the money’ attitude which is keeping them very rich.  Stray animals (see the puppies in the photo above) continue to be born, the continue to be rounded up, and the authorities and the people involved get a nice fat payment for every animal which they kill !

And the EU should consider letting this type of authority into the EU as a new member state !!!

It is good to see that Serbian citizens are now waking up to the current situation – they pay the taxes which puts money into the pockets of the authorities after all; and instead are taking to the streets to voice their opposition to the animal killings.

Serbia: Mass killing of stray dogs in Nis / Serbia – A Pathetic Government Not Complying With The Law. Inform Them and The EU NOW !

Serbia: Mass killing of stray dogs in Nis / Serbia

Activists trying to rescue dogs from the grip of death at JKP “Naš Dom” in Pozega, hardly a dog shelter, but rather a concentration camp for the poor stray dogs of Serbia, as referred to by many, and is the gruesome epitome of brutality towards animals not uncommon throughout Serbia. Read what the activists who are trying to rescue and re-home these beautiful animals have to say about this place where dogs are being tortured, starved, strangled, abused, and beaten to death, and incompetently sterilized.

Starving puppies are eating each other they are so desperate. The Pozega dog concentration camp JKP “Naš Dom”, as this pound has rightfully been called by animal lovers ever since their brutal treatment of stray dogs has been revealed, began its operations in March 2008. It was founded jointly by two cities – Uzice and Cacak, and seven municipalities gravitating towards Pozega, with capacities for 200 dogs.

Estimates are that since the beginning until this day over 7,500 dogs were put to death. They were tortured, killed with blunt objects, their dead bodies buried right next to river Djetinja. Nowadays, the corpses are being sent to Cuprija for cremation. These gruesome details are revealed by Dusica and Dragana, who are trying to help these dogs by alerting people through Facebook. There are plenty of disturbing distressing pictures, for instance, bloodstained dogs in cages. “Napredak”, a company from Ćuprija, won the tender for disposing of waste from JKP “Naš Dom” in Požega.

The dogs that are kept there are being starved to death, and those still alive are killed by injections without any prior sedation. In the first years, they were injected with liquid detergent to kill them. One of the many criminal charges against this pound was brought by their former employee who testified about the sadistic killing of dogs – as when puppies were killed in front of their mother, who was killed last – say the above mentioned activists.

The head in charge of this concentration camp is Svetlana Božinović, along with her staff, the exponent of Zoohigijena communal service, Zoran Đokovic, the director, and Milan Božović, the veterinarian, according to the activists.

Numerous criminal charges have been laid against them, at least 15, but until this day, there have been no criminal investigations. Furthermore, complaints have been lodged with the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture against the chief veterinary inspector Mrs. Mićović, for failing to respond to numerous charges laid against this pound.

The activists further claim that Mrs Mićović and the pound veterinarian Božović have close personal ties. Starving and distressed dogs kept in filthy conditions In addition to crimes of torturing and killing animals as defined in Article 5, Clause 1, Item 18, of the Animal Welfare Act, JKP “Naš Dom” is also being accused of financial crimes: until 2013, they did not issue any financial receipts in relation to the impounded dogs. Those we managed to pull out have not been chipped, although we paid for their chipping, as well as for rabies vaccination.

Conditions in cages and boxes are horrendous. There is no regular water or food. Puppies are kept together with large dogs often leading to fatal outcomes. Mating also occurs. The pound does not meet the regulations on shelters and pensions passed in 2012.

Witnesses have seen pound workers beat the dogs with clubs. Those we managed to pull out are traumatized, show fear when approached and have scars from beatings – say the activists. In their efforts to draw attention to this ongoing tragedy, the activists further say it is not known how much funding the pound is getting from local councils of the seven municipalities it operates in. We know the municipality of Uzice is paying 11,000 dinars for each dog the pound takes. They also fund sterilizations. Still, the pound management requests money from each person wishing to adopt a dog, or volunteers trying to pull them out, on account of sterilization.

They do not consent to sterilizations at other veterinary stations, while the receipts for procedures at their premises are issued subsequently – say the activists, adding that these procedures are carried out incompetently, often leading to septicaemia, while the incisions are closed with ordinary rope. The tragic circumstances of dogs impounded at JKP “Naš Dom” in Požega have also been described by the Italian association OIPA (http://www.oipa.org/italia/randagismo/appelli/serbia.html) who had arranged the adoption of a dog with acid burns.

Reporting from the pound, Svetlana Božinović-Lalić, a volunteer, is calling upon animal lovers to stay united in their efforts: Rescuing dogs from the concentration camp in Pozega, one is up against a sheer display of power and evil. Irena from “Košutnjak” was told to come early in the morning to get the dogs she made reservations and paid charges for, while my appointment was at 10 am. I then learned they had released to Irena three dogs of their choice, instead of the ones she had previously reserved and paid for. People from the pound had placed a table and chairs by the entrance in such a way that we would have to look out into the street through the fence bars. The dogs to be released to us were put into transporters. All except Svetlana, the manager, were wearing white coats, while a few puppies were running lose. As I went through the gate, the first thing they told me was that since they were suspecting an outbreak of rabies we were not allowed to go inside where the dogs were. Furthermore, they said that under the circumstances, releasing of dogs was against the law and should not go ahead. In the end, they released 12 dogs to me, without answering my questions about other dogs I was interested in. The only information I got was that the skinny dog I enquired about was no longer alive. At that moment, Andrijana Kozić and a few others arrived. Andrijana, of course, was not allowed to g in, so Ruza took charge of four dogs that were being released. From that moment on, things turned completely insane. A few of us, who came to pull out the dogs, stood helplessly by the gate asking them to release those we had already made reservations for. The pound workers then withdrew into the office building and called the police! Four local policemen showed up, exchanged greeting with the pound workers and kept us waiting there for two whole hours. We voluntarily gave them our identification papers. Talking to the police, we learned that one of them had already called the pound many times to come and get a pack of hungry dogs who were attacking his chickens. We suggested to him to feed the dogs and offered help. We also offered to separate the pack and transfer dogs to several different locations to break up the strong bonds and the resulting aggressive behaviour. We also offered help with food. I personally asked the policeman to let me have a copy of the official notification of rabies which the pound failed to provide. He answered it was not his job to do so. In the meantime, the pound workers started leaving the premises one by one – first Mr Bozic senior, the self proclaimed all mighty. Then Svetlana, and all the others followed except for a watchman who stayed behind. Rade Radovanovic called the chief state inspector to come requesting she first contact the pound and order the release of at least the dogs we had made reservations for. But, once the workers leave the premises, as they well knew, any visit by the inspector would be meaningless. After some three hours of standing there in the hope that we would be able to save at least one more life, we had to leave. It was 30 degrees outside and the dogs were sitting in their cages in the van. Two Facebook groups support the struggle against the brutal treatment of stray dogs in Serbia. One of the FB sites is Help Pozega Dogs for more info.

Dear all,

Venus has very kindly produced a letter – here in both English and German; which can be copied and sent to the 3 e mail addresses which are provided:  To  Juncker, Tusk, and Schultz.

In order that we have an effect, please copy and send the letter to the 3 mails provided – please make sure you add your name and nationality at the end of the letter where indicated.

Thank you; and thanks to Venus for producing.

E mail the letter to the following please:

To Mr. Jean Claude Juncker – President of the European Commission.

Mr. Donald Tusk – President of the European Council

Mr. Martin Schultz – President of the European Parliament.

Dear Sirs,

About 5 years ago, EU and non EU citizens have expressed a wish with the unprecedented number of 1.3 million signatures. This action went down in history of democratic participation.

These citizens then demanded a limit of animal transport to 8 hours, and so was named this campaign “8hours campaign” against the agonizing, unlimited journeys of animals through Europe to their slaughter. Today these same citizens are more than ever disappointed by the ignorance and contempt by the EU Commission.

Disappointed because the European Commission has still opted for the lucrative and not for the animal friendly transport of animals. These still take days and are painful.

Disappointed because is still flowing blood from the trucks on the highway, the blood of animals, who are carted unnecessary for days, thirsty, starving, injured, half dead to whole Europe, although this is against the EU-Transport laws .

Disappointed because these “citizens’ initiatives” are systematically ignored from the European Commission, although they belong to the participation in the legislation in the EU after the Lisbon Treaty.

This disappointment has already reached the limit of anger within the EU countries. Because it is not just only an issue of animal rights. It is the betrayal of the European Commission on its citizens. It is the rejection of the European Commission to respect the decisions of their citizens who want nothing other than to improve an outdated Animal Transport Regulation.

This anger will reveal its first consequences in UK in the referendum. The power of the Internet is very large, you know better than we do. We can reach a lot of people, educate them, and eventually convince them. For or against EU. But which side are you on?

ADD YOUR NAME and Nationality.

President.Juncker@ec.europa.eu EC.SECRETARIAT@consilium.europa.eu europabuero@martin-schulz.eu

ADD Your name and nationality.

We have campaigned against live exports from (South East) English ports for the last 25+ years – see some of our ‘past history events’ via the following link.

UK live exports have virtually stopped completely as a result of many years dedicated campaigning.  It is now only the Dutch who come to the UK and export live UK animals to Europe.  The Brits have had a long hatred for live animal exports – see here what we mean:

Following on from all of our recent work and posts relating to the terrible conditions which EU animals are having to endure en route to Turkey, as filmed by Lesley and the crew at Eyes on Animals in the Netherlands – http://www.eyesonanimals.com/    we have now started a petition to get it stopped.  The petition link is given directly below.

Please sign and also pass on to all your contacts – we want to make an impact with this petition and make the EU Commissioners who are responsible for allowing this animal abuse to happen accountable to the citizens of Europe and the rest of the world.

EOA Turkey 2

Petition wording

To: Vytenis Andriukaitis EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety and Phil Hogan EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development

Firstly, please watch the video showing how EU animals continue to suffer at the Turkish border; and have done in this way for at least the last 5 years.

Video Link – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udReHkAumrY&feature=youtu.be

Live EU animals are very regularly exported from EU member states to Turkey, a non EU state. EU citizens are continually alarmed by the clear and obvious breaches of regulations by some EU member states to protect the welfare of animals during long distance transport.

The so called EU Regulation 1/2005 on the alleged ‘protection of animals during transport’ is a complete and utter joke for which we hold you responsible. It is never enforced as the attached video taken at the Turkish border clearly shows.

You are failing animals of the EU. The EU should commit itself to immediately ending live animal exports from the EU; especially as (EU) animal welfare organisations continue to provide clear evidence of welfare breaches which you personally constantly ignore.

EOA Turkey 1

If animals are to be slaughtered for meat, then it should be undertaken within the EU to standards enforced by the EU rather than by third world nations such as Turkey who do not care about animal welfare or suffering at slaughter.

As global citizens concerned for the welfare of animals, we ask that the EU introduces an immediate ban on all live animal exports to third countries, including Turkey.

Your inaction and continual excuses for non action are yet more reasons why the UK has a referendum to leave the EU in June 2016. Other nations such as the Netherlands will follow in a similar manner very soon. If you continue to disregard all the evidence that is presented to you of the suffering of animals in transport; the EU will eventually disintegrate; and the only people to blame are Commissioners such as yourselves who have been provided with the continual evidence of cruelty and suffering for years, and yet still constantly ignore it.

You are not Commissioners, you are simply people that formally approve animal abuse and suffering and to support this, invent phrases about legislation to circumnavigate the reality of animal suffering!

The EU wants no animal suffering; not Commissioners such as yourselves who turn the other way when it happens !

Article 13 of the Treaty of Lisbon

With the support and close co-operation of the Member States, the European Commission has been promoting animal welfare for over 40 years.  A step in 1998 was Council Directive 98/58/EC on the protection of animals kept for farming purposes which gave general rules for the protection of animals of all species kept for the production of food, wool, skin or fur or for other farming purposes, including fish, reptiles or amphibians.

These rules are based on the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes(214 kB)   and they reflect the so-called ‘Five Freedoms’:

  • Freedom from hunger and thirst

  • Freedom from discomfort

  • Freedom from pain, injury and disease

  • Freedom to express normal behaviour

  • Freedom from fear and distress

When the Lisbon Treaty came into force in 2009 it amended the ‘Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union’ (TFEU) and introduced the recognition that animals are sentient beings.

Article 13 of Title II states that:

In formulating and implementing the Union’s agriculture, fisheries, transport, internal market, research and technological development and space policies, the Union and the Member States shall, since animals are sentient beings, pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals, while respecting the legislative or administrative provisions and customs of the Member States relating in particular to religious rites, cultural traditions and regional heritage.”

National governments may adopt more stringent rules provided they are compatible with the provisions of the Treaty but Community legislation concerning the welfare conditions of farm animals lays down minimum standards.

Doomed Europe ?  – maybe citizens are fed up with self righteous Commissioners who do not actually do anything the man in the street wants, except for feathering their own political nest ! – see below.

“Capitalism does not work when all have to eat.”
This is the EU’s applied philosophy.

And how does it work?
An EU Member is a capitalist who exploits the people after he was elected by exactly these people.
Financially all MEPs are part of the turbo-earners.
The basic salary of a deputy is 8021 euros per month.
After deduction of the EU tax remain of 6250 Euro.
If the European Parliament come together, a deputy gets for his participation in the consultations a daily allowance of 304 euros.
In order to rent an office and pay phone bills, he receives monthly 4299 Euro.
Every deputy receives each month for personal staff up to 21,209 euros!!.

Where does this money come from?
From indebted countries of the exploited, poor citizens.
The “bailout” run into millions of euros to poor countries, where every second citizen must live a month with the daily allowance of MEPs!!
After Greece is soon Portugal bankrupt, other countries are crying out for help.
There is no question whether the euro collapses – only when it’s done!
It is clear: the EU has failed.

And the animal welfare?

we cannot do anything,” or “we are not responsible” we get in response to millions of global protests:

– against the Romanian Dog Mafia,
– against the bullfights the EU subsidize with our tax dollars continued and even against our will,
– against the criminal idiocy of animal experiments
– against illegal crap stalls in the slaughterhouses of member countries.

As for the horror animal transport in the EU, one can speak of a criminal indifference and complicity on the part of the EU, which serves only the interests of the meat mafia.
For the EU animals were always “either wool or meat”, the sheep has never been of interest.

We have tolerated the ignorance and the indifference from EU for many years. And paid with billions.
Now all these must be stopped.
No to exploitation of human beings and animals, no to incompetent politicians,

No to EU!

UPDATE – UK Referendum Date – Thursday 23rd June 2016 – 23/6/16.

EU-UK-flag

Well all the news in the UK at the moment relates to the UK in / out referendum on (the UK) continuing to be a member state of the European Union (EU).  The following links from the BBC give a very good overview of the current situation and the major problem / issue that most UK voters will have within the next year or so – that being:  does the UK leave the EU or does it stay ?

Although we watch news bulletins very regularly and try to keep up with issues affecting the referendum, there are other issues to those ‘main’ ones which do not get any attention but which many people in the UK feel very strongly about.  Animals and their welfare are one of those such issues.

Lets be clear, the British voting public have NOT been consulted at all on the issues in the EU which are of concern to them.  David Cameron has ‘his’ issues; and these are all that are debated at this present time.  To hell with everyone else and what they consider as important – global warming, the environment etc, etc.  All issues such as these, concerning what the British public would actually like to see really addressed by the EU top people re EU changes are completely ignored.  And yet the British public will still be expected to vote in the coming months on just a handful of debated issues; mostly pretty useless and unimportant to many, while ‘theirs’ (or in our case animal welfare); are just thrown on the scrap heap and do not even appear on the list for debate.

At the present time; many of our national (UK) animal welfare regulations are set by the EU, which we do not have a problem with; that being AS LONG AS every nations which is an EU member state abides by the rules and does what is required of them as members.  Sadly this very often not the case; and so one has to question the entire ‘EU thing’ when only 50% of its members even bother to comply strictly with any particular animal welfare legislation.  When it comes to animals and their welfare, we in the UK have a proud history; the normal consensus being to do what is best for the welfare of the animal.

For example, the EU has ‘Regulation 1/2005’ which is supposed to enforce strict (but in our opinion still very wrong and grossly outdated) regulations for the so-called ‘protection’ of animals during long distance transport.  Basically, and as persons at SAV have been very involved with live animal transport investigations for many years; ie. 25+, it is very much clear to us to say that the existing EU regulations for animals in transport do NOT work.  Some better nations of the EU try to enforce the regulations as best they can; others simply do not care – they are going for slaughter anyway being the rhetoric !  We only have to see for example the evidence obtained by good friend Lesley at ‘Eyes on Animals’ http://www.eyesonanimals.com/category/our-inspections/transport/  in the Netherlands regarding many EU animals being exported from the EU across to Turkey, a (current) non EU state.  At the border between the EU and Turkey, animals are forced by non-compliance of the EU regulations to wait for days to cross the border into Turkey for their slaugter. http://www.eyesonanimals.com/inspection-of-eu-livestock-trucks-heading-to-turkey/   The length of time they have to wait to cross borders is completely non compliant with the EU Regulation 1/2005 on the welfare of animals during transport – yet the regulation is constantly ignored by all involved (to ensure ‘welfare’) and the EU seems to do very little about the evidence from welfare groups which clearly (and time after time) shows non compliance with these regulations !

As you can see from the ‘About Us’ tab on the top of this site; several years ago we produced a report (with a group of leading EU animal welfare organisations) for the EU Parliament / Commission specifically about the live calf trade between Ireland and mainland Europe.  The report, which concentrated on some 5 independent trails (of livestock vehicles) and investigations of live calf transporters; clearly showed each and every time that the were blatantly clear breaches and non compliances with the regulations set by the EU in their Regulation 1/2005.

If you care to click on the following link you will see just 1 of the 5 trails which was undertaken and clearly proved that Irish calves were not being given adequate food and rest at an approved Staging Post facility after they had made the crossing from Ireland to France.  Remember, this is just 1 of the 5 investigation reports that we produced in our ‘overall’ document; and all the non compliances with the EU Regulation 1/2005 for this specific trail / investigation are given at the end of this specific investigation report.  Remember also that these investigations and reports do not just appear by magic.  Many people, their time, money and several vehicles are often involved – they all take effort and time to record all the exact details which you can see detailed in the report.  Thus, it can be annoying in the least when all this work is undertaken, compiled and presented to the EU, and then they do nothing about it ! – something is wrong somewhere; hence our gripes as detailed in the rest of this article.  This is typical of the work involved to ‘do the trail / investigation job’ properly; and when you do and then get completely ignored at EU level you begin to ask questions about those same people and the organisation who are supposed to be ‘enforcing’ the ‘animal welfare’ regulations.

So what has happened about this ?, what note has been taken of the (our) investigative report to try and help suffering calves on the road ? – basically, sod all; we have been ignored, that’s what; our evidence, time, money and efforts to show the cruelty but reality of the trade were utterly ignored by the EU.  So, was there any real use in producing the report in the first place we ask ?  There is no change and no progress – years on from our report of 2010, Irish calves are still being exported to mainland EU, the hauliers are still breaking the rules as we originally exposed those years ago, and the EU masters conveniently turn a blind eye to it all; just like they do when informed about the very long waits at the Turkish border.  So, what is the point of ‘EU rules and regulations’, when we show how they are constantly being broken and yet the EU is doing nothing about it !!  We all know that David Cameron, the British PM and ‘chief negotiator’ at the EU meetings, does not care about animal welfare; after all, as a huntsman he wants to bring back hunting which has been banned in the UK for approximately 12 years now.  Such are his animal welfare concerns – so who is he to represent us, the UK / British public at a meeting in Europe – especially anything relating to animal welfare !

The same could be said about stray animals and new EU member states which are currently listed as ‘EU candidate countries’.  This includes Serbia.  Ever since our foundation back in 2005, SAV has pushed at EU level that Serbia should not be allowed to become an EU member state until it fully addresses its own laws correctly does something positive towards stray animal welfare legislation, the management and long term reduction of stray animals within Serbia.  As Serbia is so very corrupt at both local and national political level; we are hardly ever witnessing Serbia actually applying its own ‘rules of law’ (which is actually an EU membership requirement under the Copenhagen Criteria we are informed by the EU Enlargement Commission – http://ec.europa.eu/enlargement/policy/policy-highlights/rule-of-law/index_en.htm ) in advance of any EU candidate country membership.  So again here we have another animal welfare problem – Serbia simply ignores its own existing national legislations for the treatment of stray animals, whilst at the same time it is also supposed to be showing the EU that it IS enforcing its own national laws (the rules of law) under ‘Copenhagen’ in order to become a new member state of the EU !! – read more about the rules and regulations in ‘About Serbian Animals’ – one of the main top tabs which you can find on this site.

Picture 021

So, we have calves being shipped all over the EU by Irish hauliers (and others) who do not adhere to EU animal transport regulations as they should (being from existing EU member states), and we have am (EU) ‘candidate country’ named Serbia which is not enforcing its own animal welfare legislation but which is aiming for EU membership in the very near future; even though it is not complying at all with the ‘rule of law’ as required by the EU for all new member states to show that they are !

To non Europeans (many of whom visit this site), we ask; would you personally vote ‘yes’ to remain in a farcical team called ‘the EU’ which says one thing and yet almost always turns a blind eye, or ignores all the very realistic evidence on non-compliances when it is presented to them ? – this is the situation British EU animal welfare citizens and voters are in at the moment; what way exactly do we / they vote ?

On a SAV basis, the more we currently look into EU animal welfare, the more we see that regulations are not being enforced to prosecute member states across the whole of the EU by the EU seniors in their ivory towers at Brussels.  The situation is really a very bad joke; but sadly, a joke which sees millions of animals being abused by the ‘EU system’, when in reality, it, in the form of EU legislation and national enforcement,  should be offering them some degree of protection in their very fragile and often very short ‘lives’.

onderwater-dover-2nd-may-2013

As we have shown on this site many times, David Cameron (British Prime Minister)  is a hunter; and one who wishes to bring (animal) abuse in the form of hunting back into the UK at the very earliest opportunity.  He is not in any way, shape or form a supporter of animal welfare.  Some 11 years or so ago about 94% of the British public voted that wild animals should not be allowed in British circuses.  This was the result of a formal public consultation by the UK government (then called ‘MAFF’) at the time.  Eleven years on, and under David Cameron’s Conservative government, we still have no movement on preventing wild animals from being used in UK circuses.  27 other nations around the World have stopped it – This shows how much ‘concern’ Mr Cameron has for animals – ie. none – and yet he now wants us all to rally round him when he returns from the EU in the next few days by voting ‘yes’ to his pitiful negotiations, and in his opinion, thus getting the UK to remain in the EU.

And lets take the EU Commissioners – non elected by the citizen people of Europe and yet the very persons who sit in the EU towers to decide ‘what is’ and ‘what is not’ when it comes to ‘their’ particular sector.

For example, lets look at Irishman Phil Hogan – the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.  http://ec.europa.eu/commission/2014-2019/hogan_en

When questioned about live animal transport a few years back by a welfare group, for which he was sent over 500 texts in just one day on the subject issue, Hogan responded that ‘he would not be bullied on animal farming or animal welfare issues’  – http://www.thejournal.ie/phil-hogan-love-exports-texts-1978127-Mar2015/  – no doubt Commissioner Hogan supports the export of live calves to Europe from Ireland, despite the non compliances with regulations that we presented in our report years ago;  and so what results – nothing !  – he is an EU Commissioner who should actually be listening to the request of the people of the EU; instead he is in a very pivotal position of just speaking up to defend Irish farmers at whatever cost to the rest of the animals of Europe.  Would you have faith in such people ? – we certainly do not – and yet here is a typical example of how un-elected by the people politicians rule the way the EU is going in; by simply getting what they alone want and sod everyone else !

Many people will see the (UK) in / out vote in the near future as a clear message to the British government that they (the government) really are on another planet to the majority of citizens of the UK.  Many of these people will vote ‘out’ just to send a simple but very clear message to Mr Cameron and the cronies that work around him that they are sick of his principles.  One thing is fairly sure, if the UK votes to leave the EU, David Cameron cannot remain as the UK Prime Minister; he and his campaign will be torn to shreds and he will have to walk head bowed from Downing Street.  Just the thought of this spectacle alone will make many people vote for the UK to get out of Europe; these being the disabled; those who cannot get council housing, as the government is still selling it (council housing) off, the situation where sick and disabled people are screwed by the government on the ‘bedroom tax’; as well as the whole saga relating to wonderful pay rises for MP’s when they are telling everyone else that they cannot have big pay rises as the system does not allow it ! – a ‘one rule for some and the same rules not applying to others’ one could say.

The EU is in a mess – the few (and often un-elected, such as Commissioners) running and deciding on what happens, completely ignorant to the wishes of the normal and many EU citizens ask.  Does this help animal welfare ? – No; but then does staying in the EU and getting told by people like Hogan to go away when he should be listening to the people and taking note of their evidence aka our live export investigations report or the evidence of livestock transporters waiting for days at the Turkish border ?.

We do not know how UK citizens will eventually vote; although at the moment (19/2/16) it is looking more like getting OUT of the EU rather than staying in – but this may change.  Whatever the result, the UK government will have to acknowledge that there are around half of the people in the country who are not happy with whatever the final outcome is – it is that close at present.

David Cameron; only some have any faith in you.  Time will tell what results you bring back to the UK as something fabulous for the people of the UK.  We think it will be a damp squib.   27, 28, 32 nations (as the EU could be) just do not harmonise – we all as independent nations have our own ways and standards.  Don’t view things as the EU does, that the UK is as Sweden, which is as Italy, which is as Greece, which is as Latvia, which is as Serbia, which is as Denmark etc, etc.  Wake up to the real world before it is too late.

Whatever, the UK has a proud and VERY vocal, campaigning animal rights / welfare lobby – we will continue to fight for the better treatment of animals regardless of us being in or out of the EU.

We can make the effort and be the animals voice as per the trail / investigation link given above; it is hard work and takes a lot of time, but we do it for the animals.  And what’s more; we are getting pretty good at what we do in this field now !!

Congress Member Asks State Department to Help Dolphin Activist Held in Japan

Immigration officials have detained Ric O’Barry at Tokyo’s Narita Airport since Monday.

A California representative has requested that United States diplomatic officials intervene in the detention of an American environmental activist at Tokyo’s Narita Airport.

Jack d’Annibale, the director of communications for Rep. Ted Lieu, confirmed on Tuesday that in response to a request from the California Democrat’s office, the U.S. State Department has asked Japanese officials to immediately release Ric O’Barry, who has been held at the airport since arriving on Monday afternoon.

Ric O’Barry is a longtime leader of opposition to an annual dolphin drive and hunt in the Japanese town of Taiji. The hunt, which was brought to worldwide attention in the 2009 documentary The Cove, results in thousands of dolphins being killed for meat or captured for sale to aquariums and marine parks.

“We don’t believe there’s any reason for him to be stopped at immigration,” said O’Barry’s son, Lincoln O’Barry. “He’s always been very careful not to violate any laws and to work with the legal system in Japan.”

The Cove

The State Department would not confirm that it had intervened on O’Barry’s behalf, citing privacy concerns.

Americans do not need visas to enter Japan for visits of under 90 days, according to the website of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

O’Barry’s efforts to stop the Taiji hunt are featured in The Cove, and Japanese immigration officials have challenged his entry into the country as a tourist based in part on his presence in the documentary, said his son.

“[Japanese] immigration says the reason is that he made The Cove, which is not true. He was in the film but not part of the production company,” said Lincoln O’Barry. “They also say he’s part of Sea Shepherd,” an environmental group well known for interfering with Japan’s whale hunts, “which is not true.”

O’Barry is being held in a “deportees facility” at Narita Airport “that is more like a jail than a hotel,” his son said.

A lawyer has appealed Ric O’Barry’s detention to the Japanese courts, he added, but if officials succeed in their deportation effort, the senior O’Barry will not be able to reenter Japan for five years or more.

“This is another form of the government trying to hide what’s going on in Taiji,” he said.

SAMPLE LETTER – copy and send, or copy and personalise as you wish.

Use the above 2 links to select where you send copies of your letter.

Each year in Taiji, Japan; dolphins are chased into a small cove and butchered in the most horrific and cruel way imaginable. These hunts are subsidized by the dolphin captivity industry, which pays top money for a few “show quality” dolphins that are ripped from their families and sold on to aquatic centres in order to perform stupid tricks for a brain dead audience, whilst the rest of the captured pod is killed for meat. This dolphin meat has been proven to be laden with mercury and PCBs, all of which are very harmful to Japanese citizens who eat the meat.

Due to a major attempt to cover up the hunt by the Japanese government (which drastically fails in the rest of the world); most Japanese citizens don’t even know that the hunts exist in their land. The Japanese government very much supports the dolphin killers, whilst denying any public health issues.  Both issues are now being widely publicised to the world through international campaign networks, the internet and film such as ‘The Cove’.

The Japanese government are still attempting to resist worldwide actions taken against them for both dolphin and for whale slaughter; which takes place each year under the false guise of ‘Scientific research’.  The Japanese government may believe there are no public health issues for its own citizens regarding the dolphin slaughter, and may kid itself that it needs to undertake ‘research’ in whales as it falsely claimed for many years; but thanks to global communication processes nowdays, the rest of the world instantly knows the real truth; this is why Japan (as a nation) is hated internationally by the environmental movement and also why so many protests are taking place outside its embassies located around the world.

There is a simple way to resolve this – that is for Japan to stop the killing of both dolphins and whales now.  Animal welfare campaigners who speak out against the dolphin murders are now being directly targeted – the latest being Mr Ric O’Barry who has been held at Tokyo’s Narita airport since Monday 18th January.

Mr O’Barry is a longtime leader in opposition to the annual Taiji (town) dolphin hunt, which has gained a negative worldwide reputation since the release and viewing of the film ‘The Cove’.  ‘The Cove’ has shown the teal cruelty of Japan to the rest of the world;  which has led to a worldwide hatred for the actions of Japan on whales and dolphins ever since.

There is no reason whatsoever why Mr O’Barry should be held by Japan.  He has always been very careful not to violate any laws, whilst at the same time working within the legal system of Japan.  If Japan thinks their actions will result in bad publicity for the organisation named ‘Sea Shepherd’, which is most probably why Mr O’Barry is now being held; then Japan is very wrong.

The world largely supports the actions of Sea Shepherd whilst undertaking a national hatred of the Japanese people and what they do in murdering the natural wonders of our oceans.

It is time for Japan to change, and change now – immediately.  For only when Japan does take actions to ban both the dolphin murders and whale murders which it undertakes at present; only then will it be accepted back into the international community as a nation which has respect of others for attempts to preserve the wonderful creatures of our oceans.  All the time the Japanese led killings continue, Japan will continue to be singled out and targeted for what it is – simply murderers of the wonderful wildlife of the world’s oceans; nothing more, nothing less.

Japan needs to take action and to take it immediately – ban the killing of dolphins and whales now, today.

Yours truly,

YOUR Name and nationality.
