Note we have a couple of petitions at the end for you to support please.
HANNAH and CHANTY
Hannah and Chanty have joined all of the other cats in the yard and have fit in with no problems in the blink of an eye!
Take a peek at the photos and see how much they enjoy their new surroundings! 🙂
Donations to keep the cats well and healthy are always welcome – Thank you.

NIKI
Niki was less than two years old when she was brought to the shelter in 2011, together with her brother Fogi.
She had been an owned cat once upon a time until her owner decided she couldn’t take care of Niki and Fogi anymore, so both of them ended up being someone else’s responsibility. Anyway, Niki developed an ear hematoma a couple of weeks ago and the vet has drained the swelling twice over that period of time trying to avoid surgery.
But to no avail – although she had been receiving antibiotics and wearing an Elizabethan collar, the swelling filled up again rapidly each time. She is going in for surgery again on Monday and it will be done under inhalation anesthesia as she has an adverse reaction to Ketamine which is therefore potentially dangerous for her.
We can’t be sure what caused her aural hematoma, but we have reasons to suspect she somehow got scratched by the wire of the outdoor enclosure which should have been replaced years ago, but we never succeeded in raising enough funds for such a massive task 😦
Long story short, our vet bills keep piling up and up (as expected for a place with so many cats) and every kind of help is not only highly appreciated but desperately needed as well!
If you aren’t able to donate, please share far and wide at least!

Donations are always very much welcomed thank you.
PETITIONS
Rather than put them on a separate post, we have added a few petitions here. Please give them your support.
Thanks SAV.
We need as any signatures as possible with the following – it is important – please crosspost thank you.

“Gigging” is a form of hunting that involves stabbing small animals with pitchfork-like spears, causing the victims to endure slow, agonizing deaths from shock, organ failure, or blood loss.
Students and locals in DeKalb County, Tennessee, are being encouraged to “gig” up to 15 frogs each as part of a fundraiser to benefit two graduating high school seniors.
This sadistic event is scheduled for June 24, so the sooner you speak up, the better.

Target: Bob Ferguson, Attorney General of Washington
Goal: Seek maximum sentence for man who allegedly dragged a dog behind his truck and killed it.
A dog was reportedly hung to the side of a truck by a leash and dragged behind the moving vehicle. The poor animal was yelping and crying as the cruel driver dragged him along the road, according to witnesses. Police say that they found the dog’s body inside the owner’s home and took it for a necropsy.
52-year-old David Kadow, the owner who reportedly dragged this helpless animal down the road, was arrested on animal cruelty charges and driving with a suspended license. Dragging animals behind vehicles has become a hobby for the cruel hearted. There have been numerous cases just like this one. A sea turtle, for instance, was killed in this same manner. If the justice system would appropriately punish these people, this sick cruelty wouldn’t be continuously increasing. More often than not, the punishment for animal cruelty is little more than a fine and that’s not acceptable.
Demand that authorities set an example with Kadow by giving him the maximum penalty for the torture and killing of this helpless animal, if guilty.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Mr. Ferguson,
A dog was reportedly tied to a truck by its leash and dragged down the street. Police say they found the dog’s dead body inside the driver’s home and have taken it for a necropsy. This helpless animal yelped and cried as it was being tortured, according to witnesses.
It’s a shame that this act of animal cruelty has become so common. We urge you to help stop this heinous, senseless animal cruelty by seeking the maximum penalty possible against the man who killed this innocent dog, if guilty.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]

Dear Mark,

Geese after feathers plucked for down at a feather farm in China.
PETA and PETA Asia have uncovered shocking cruelty to geese connected with so-called “responsible” down and feather suppliers. The Responsible Down Standard actually allows certified companies to deal in feathers that are live-plucked in addition to the ones that aren’t.
Workers were seen ripping geese’s feathers out while they were fully conscious, leaving open, bloody wounds. Some geese struggled and cried out, while others were paralyzed with fear. Workers pinned them down by stepping on their delicate wings and necks and tightly binding their feet together.
PETA dug deeper and found that the farms that are live-plucking birds or dealing in live-plucked feathers sell to “Non Live-Plucked Products Guarantee” or “Responsible Down Standard” companies, the same companies that agree to “ensure humane treatment of animals.” One buyer even bragged about misleading customers and live-plucking in secret. These certified companies supply down to clothing and bedding companies such as Eddie Bauer, Lands’ End, and Hollander Sleep Products.
With your help, we can push retailers to remove down from their shelves and put an end to this cruelty. All you have to do is take action today. Thank you.

VICTORY: Barbaric ‘Toro de la Vega’ Bull Stabbing Festival Finally Banned!
We’ve just received some wonderful news – a horrific annual “festival” in which men on foot and horseback pursue and stab a terrified young bull to death, has just effectively been banned by the regional government in Spain.
The Toro de la Vega “festival” has, until now, taken place every September in the autonomic region of Castilla y Léon, Spain. The event entails chasing a young bull through the streets of Tordesillas and stabbing him with darts and spears until he is bleeding and crippled. His tail is cut off while he’s still alive. When he dies of his injuries, the person who ultimately killed him is awarded a ceremonial spear and a medal by the city council.

Compassionate people, including tens of thousands of PETA supporters as well as local Spanish groups such as PACMA, have been protesting against this cruelty for years. Now our efforts have finally paid off!
Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our actions or otherwise spoken out against this cruelty.
This victory is part of a wider movement in Spain, as more and more people are turning against events such as bullfighting and bull runs.
To date, more than 100 towns have banned these events. The tide is turning against barbaric so-called “traditions” – and with your help, we’ll keep on fighting until no more animals suffer slow and painful deaths in the name of entertainment.

Kitten season has kicked into full gear and abandoned babies, frequently just born and with their umbilical cords still attached, are literally everywhere.
Irresponsible cat owners here feel that spaying/neutering is cruel, but I guess separating the youngsters from their nursing mothers and leaving them next to a trash can to fend for themselves when they aren’t even able to eat alone (or throwing them inside the waste container) isn’t cruel at all.

Of course, it’s impossible to know who the mother cats belong to, but it’s also highly improbable that a stray cat would pack her kittens into a carrying bag or a box and leave them in a dumpster. Year after year the same thing happens and year after year the overall situation is getting worse.
Although almost all animal rescuers are already getting hoarse from repeating that spay/neuter surgery is necessary for pets, far too many cats and dogs end up on the street and the animal shelters are overflowing with all of the new arrivals.
OK, rant over. These six babies were left in a cardboard box in front of the mall when they were maybe 10 days old. Two of them hadn’t even opened their eyes yet because their eyelids were glued shut with pus. They have been hand raised and bottle fed for a month now, as they were not progressing the way they should; moreover, all of them had a chlamydia infection and ringworm. Just great. Five of them finally pulled through and began to eat on their own, but the tiniest one, a little black girlie with a white tip to her tail, who had been the smallest and weakest from the very beginning, seemed to be dying a week ago. She had been given strong antibiotics for days and then the UV scan showed that her liver and stomach were enlarged, so more drugs (vitamins and hepatoprotectives) were added to her daily therapy.
She needed around the clock care, her chances were slim to none, but she didn’t want to die and she definitely wasn’t ready to give up. Bone skinny, feeble and frail, she valiantly fought for her life with every ounce of her fragile strength and she’s made it! Boy… that was close.
To our great joy, she doesn’t need to be fed with a syringe anymore, she eats on her own and even though she is at least two times smaller than any of her siblings, she is very serious about growing big. The little black girl already has a sponsor, our dear friend Kim, who named her Phoenix, as she defeated death by a hair’s breadth and sprang back to life.
If any of you would like to virtually adopt and name any of these cutie pies, we would be extremely grateful! And if you’re unable to sponsor one of them, please give us a hand with the costs of their upbringing which are already skyrocketing with some help from their vet bills.

All French foie gras farms are currently empty due to a disease that has been infecting ducks kept for the production of this cruel ‘delicacy’.
But, from next week, the French Agriculture Minister will allow farmers to bring ducks back onto their farms and restart foie gras production.
Ducks reared for foie gras have to endure the horror of being force-fed up to four times a day for the final two weeks of their lives.
Foie gras production is so cruel that it has been banned in many countries, including the UK, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway and Poland.
Will you send an e-card to the French Agriculture Minister to highlight your disgust at this cruel practice and demand that the foie gras farms stay closed forever?
The production of foie gras is staggeringly cruel. In addition to the appalling suffering inflicted by force-feeding, during this period the animals are trapped in tiny, barren cages.
The temporary closure of France’s foie gras farms is due to end on 16th May.
We have no time to lose.

LATEST
Kasper’s ghostly appearance says it all.
His kidneys are barely working, his blood levels of creatinine and urea are six times higher than normal, his pace has become significantly slower and he eats almost nothing now.
Heartbreaking as it is, he probably doesn’t have much time left as his entire body seems to be shutting down. However, he still spends his days in the yard together with his long time kitty friends, he enjoys cuddling and soaking up the sun and he doesn’t show any signs of pain, so we’ll let him live out whatever time he has left the way he wants and let him leave us on his own terms.

EARLIER NEWS
Lovely Kasper, who was saved from a shelter that burned to the ground in 2011 and has been through hell and back already is seriously ill. He’s had episodes of diarrhea every six months or so for years now and it was as though he had some gastrointestinal disorder, but when his stools have become loose and watery again, for the zillionth time, a UV scan was done and showed Kasper’s real problem is CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease).
His kidneys are failing and that’s why he’s had diarrhea on and off for ages.
He’s currently being fed a specific veterinary therapeutic diet with a restricted protein and phosphate content designed to support kidney function and minimize the complications of CKD. We’ve ordered Ipakitine, a chitosan-based phosphate binder and uremic reducer from Hungary for him and Sneska, as we can’t find it here in Serbia. At this point, it’s impossible to tell how much time he has left, but we’ll do our best to improve the quality of his life and slow the progression of the disease.

Well, Hannah and Chantal have grown big and old enough to handle surgery, so both of them were spayed three days ago.
To our huge surprise, Chantal turned out to be a boy (who will most likely have his name changed to Chanty) as we’ve never even checked his gender – we were told he was a she and we accepted that statement at face value. However, he is definitely a boy and he was an abdominal cryptorchid; one of his testicles normally descended into scrotum, but it was almost totally stunted, while the other one was retained in the abdominal cavity and significantly bigger.
The result is that instead of a routine neuter surgery which would have lasted 15 minutes at most, the vet needed to make an incision along Chanty’s abdomen to remove the retained testicle and perform a surgical procedure which resembles a spay surgery for a female cat.
Both Hannah and Chanty were operated on under inhalation anesthesia and are now receiving antibiotics but they are recovering nicely and most importantly, they are not touching their wounds.
Please help us cover the costs of their surgeries with whatever you can spare. No amount is ever too small!
Please use the above ‘youcaring’ link to give any donation – thank you – SAV.

Dear Mark,
The seal ‘hunt’ in Canada has taken the lives of over 64,244 harp seal pups.
This is the official figure from Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans, as of May 4th, and excludes seals who were wounded but got away, which officials refer to as “struck and lost.”
Sealers are supposed to kill seals only if they have buyers for their pelts (according to the government), and the two main processors, Carino and PhocaLux Int’l announced that they would purchase a combined total of about 60,000 pelts.
We are investigating whether all 60,000 pelts, plus those that have been stockpiled in past years, will be sold to fur coat manufacturers this year, or whether seals were killed this year in order to add their pelts to stockpiles. We will keep you updated on any information we are able to gather about this.
Please keep speaking out for the seals and please keep boycotting tourism to Canada, especially Atlantic Canada, and seafood from Canada.
