Internet Rallies Around ‘Angel’ the Albino Dolphin in Taiji

by Michael dEstries

A “Take Action for Dolphins Day” in the UK is being organized for February 21st – with more sites around the world to follow. Check out more info here.]

As the world watches the dolphin tragedy that continues to unfold in Japan’s infamous “killing cove,” support is building around a rare albino dolphin nicknamed “Angel” stuck in the middle of it.

The calf, which a Cove Monitor for the SaveJapanDolphins campaign described as “an angel with fins,” was separated from its mother early in the hunt as rounded up. On his website, Ric O’Barry says the little one’s chances of survival in captivity are not good.

Please Contact these leaders and ask them to release the dolphins in Taiji and Angel:

“The most likely scenario is that the Taiji Whale Museum would keep little Angel for their own promotion and to attract tourists,” he writes. “Taiji is out of the way in Japan, so tourism is always problematic for the town. An albino baby dolphin will bring a great deal of interest. And again, there will be a freak show in the museum that houses live dolphins and sells whale and dolphin meat in the gift shop.

Most honored ladies and gentlemen of the Japanese country,

on 6. and 9. August 1945 atomic bomb explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed immediately 92,000 people. They were innocent people.

The photos from that time show children, dead children that are still in the womb of their mothers, they document blood and death.
Hiroshima has become the symbol for the human race to fight against mass destruction and extermination.
We have not forgotten, and we will not forget! We fight!

Only Japan does not!
In the name of a cheap tourism, which destroy life and living beings, kill, exterminate, Japan practice the principle of Hiroshima in its dolphinariums and killer bays.

Back then a terrible “Fat Man”, flew over the people, today innocent blood and dead corpses flow in the Sea of Taiji!

It is the same as then, only the former victims become the perpetrators of today , the weapons are legal, and the motives disguise themselves under the guise of tradition and of money .
Only one thing is not, as before, Japan!
The information, the power of the media, the cry of civilized man for protection and justice of the creatures of these earth.

Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Taiji: a disgrace to the civilized world.
This should never happen again.
Japan, we fight for it!

Serbia: Activists Now Press Charge on Ministry Regarding Blocking of ‘Jegmec’ Pond Fron ‘Tisa’ River – Thousands of Fish Are Dying.

Serbian Flag

sl.15

25/01/14 UPDATE

Please refer to the copies of the documentation shown below.

The Serbian republic inspection and also the Vojvodina inspectorate have now acted and demanded that the fishes that are still surviving must be moved to the Tisa river immediately.

Serbia fish 1Serbia fish 2

Whilst activists see this as some good news for the fishes that are still alive; they really feel that the actions are still not enough.

They feel that it should be demanded by the inspectorate that all the water in which the fish live should be kept at a good level fo cleanliness.  It should be declared that the persons who have caused this current terrible situation, with so many fish dying, must be made to pay for the water cleaning.  Part of the requirements also will be that a certain water level must be maintained at all times, and that oxygen must be continually provided to the fish in these areas to ensure their survival.   This can really be a natural process IF the water is kept at a good level and also very importantly, if the water is kept clean.

So at the moment a partial result; but activists still feel that not enough is being undertaken for the long term survival and upkeep of the facilities which have the fish.

——————————————————-

Original Article:

Serbian activists have just taken action with the Ministry of Agriculture regarding farm animal welfare conditions – see:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2014/01/20/serbia-serbian-activists-ask-about-the-farms-on-which-animals-are-kept-their-transport-and-also-their-general-welfare-commissioner-gives-ministry-5-days-to-respond/

Now they have yet another issue which they are attempting to get Ministry attention with.

Here again, activists have now undertaken a formal charge against the authorities.

It relates to a river, the ‘Tisa’, which is located in Northern Serbia.  The river is linked directly to a very large pond pool area which is known as the ‘Jegmec’.

There are many thousands of young and old fish in the Jegmec pool.  But very recently, loads of earth arrived in trucks and was dumped across the tributary which links the river Tisa to the Jegmec pool / pond.  Rather than be able to swim to the Tisa from the Jegmec; young fish are now unable to leave the pool as they are trapped there.

Millions of young fish look as if they are going to die.  The weather is warm and the water level in the Jegmec is decreasing all the time.

Serbia: Serbian activists ask about the farms on which animals are kept; their transport and also their general welfare. Commissioner gives Ministry 5 days to respond.

Serbian Flag

Serbian activists ask about the farms on which animals are kept; their transport and also their general welfare.

Below you will see the demands of the Commissioner which was forwarded to the Ministry of Agriculture.  It concerns two major meat production companies.

KlanicaIM MatijevicResPov16.1.14.,1KlanicaIM MatijevicResPov16.1.14.,2KlanicaIM TopolaResPov1KlanicaIM TopolaResPov2

The Commissioner has given the Ministry 5 days to respond to the requirements detailed in the letter; and if the Ministry does not act, then EPAR, the animal welfare organisation, can proceed with part 2 of its process.  Originally, in relation to this, EPAR asked the Ministry directly.  They refused to answer and so EPAR then took the issue to the Commissioner who has now given the Ministry 5 days to respond as this is an area of Public Interest.

Now all concerned wait to see if the Ministry provide a response of if they are going to ignore the request of the Commissioner also.

Here at SAV, we have had concerns in the past regarding conditions in which animals have been kept on farms.  These concerns and the conditions can be viewed in our old posts; the links which are as follows:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2010/11/23/serbia-november-2010-conditions-ok-at-a-farm-according-to-serbian-veterinary-ministry-and-complaining-campaigners-dont-pressure-us/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2012/07/07/serbia-same-old-farm-exposed-again-and-an-ineffective-ministry-so-what-changes/

We have also expressed our concerns regarding dead animal corpses just being dumped on roadsides.  These carcasses provide an immediate attraction to stray animal populations, and also risk the spread of disease from the dead animal carcasses to the stray animals.  Here is a potential biosecurity problem.

As always, the Ministry wish to put the blame on the strays, when actually the problem lies with the Ministry for not taking actions to prevent this kind of this from happening.

The link below provides images of animal carcasses simply dumped by the roadside – an obvious attraction for stray animals which are desperate for something to eat.

England, UK: Live Animal Export Protest At Dover Grow Ever Stronger – People Are Disgusted By The Trade – Photographs and Video Links Below.

England

Dover, Kent, England.

The protests to stop live animal exports to mainland Europe continue to grow stronger all the time.  Here below are a few links to photographs and videos of the demonstrations in recent months.

The really good news is that after stopping all live exports for a period of no less than 6 weeks; the first shipment of 2014 took place on 10th January.  After a break of 6 weeks, a full consignment of livestock transporters was expected for this sailing.

In fact, only 2 livestock transporters arrived.  The vessel which carries them has a capacity of 7 or 8 transporters, so after 6 weeks, the vessel was operating at one quarter of its maximum capacity !

The protests will continue for however long it takes to stop the trade.  Protestors are growing in numbers for every sailing.  The entire export business through Dover is operated by a Dutchman.  The vehicles are Dutch and whole trade is of no benefit to the UK.  Animals are suffering big time on their shipments from the UK to Europe.  The vessel ‘Joline’ which carries the trucks sails between Dover UK and Calais, France.

The last link below shows the two vehicles arriving for the last consignment on the night of 10th/11th January 2014.

Serbia: ‘Tug o War’ Video Using Horses Requires Actions – Please e Mail Using Sample Letter Below.

Serbian Flag

UPDATE 14/1/14 –

We first had this disgusting video footage sent to us this last weekend – now we have followed up urgently and we are pleased to say that:

The police of Valjevo city have now been following up this footage – as a result they have worked with the Public Attorney of Moinica City who gave an official report of the incident on National television on 10.1.2014.  We understand that all persons involved in this incident who undertook this animal abuse and caused suffering have now been arrested and will be charged under Article 269 of Serbian law for animals.  This has a maximum punishment of 3 years in jail.

Whilst we do not expect anyone to be sent to jail for 3 years, it is hoped by us and many others that the prompt action since the weekend will send a clear message to the communities that animal abuse will not be tolerated.  If Serbia wishes to join the EU as a member state, then it really / seriously needs to address the issue of working to the good animal welfare laws which it currently has in place; rather than keep ingoring them.  We have shown enough examples on this site where the laws are just ignored for the benefit of some, whilst the animals continue to suffer.

This is a start of actions which we very much hope will now continue.

Well done the Serbian campaigners who have worked so hard with us over the last few days to get a quick and positive result.  They know who they are.

———————————————————

On 12/1/14 we have been provided with the following very disturbing abuse of horses in a kind of ‘tug o war’ type event.

You can see the video here: (note you may need to copy and watch on Google; or try the video link in the Sample Letter below)

Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYF06B8tRGo&feature=youtu.be

At first we were unsure what country this event had taken place in.  We consequently made contact with Serbian activists.

With their very valuable help we have now identified that this abuse of horses is taking place in Serbia; at a village known as Milavac.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milavac

and  http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milavac

And also   http://webot.org/?r=e&search=Milavac

Milavac is a village situated in Ljig municipality in Serbia.

Serbian activists are now making a written charge to both the Ministry of Agriculture and also to the Ministry of Internal Policing.

This crime showing clear abuse of animals is punishable by Article 269 of the Criminal Code of Serbia.  Proof of this video has now been made as evidence of the crime, so that it can be presented to the police.  Without a hard copy of the evidence the police will dismiss this crime; and so we have to copy in onto a reliable database for safe keeping and future evidence.  If a record is not kept, the police will ignore and dismiss the evidence presented – thus the abuse will be un-recorded and the police will take no further action to investigate and punish those undertaking this abuse.

The Chief Veterinary Inspector for Valjevo city, Kolubara region; the area of Serbia where this has happened, is Mrs Slavica Sreckovi

The Director of the Serbian police is Mr. Milorad Veljovic

This information is only now being posted onto this SAV site, once copies of the video have been made – now we have clear evidence of the abuses that the authorities and the police cannot ignore.  This evidence is being presented to them in the form of a charge, asking them to take action.

We hope to be able to give you an update on the situation in the future.

We request that you all write a few lines expressing your disgust at this video, and demand that the police and the authorities take action.

You can write your own e mail, or alternatively, copy and send the following short sample letter:

Send to:

regionalnava@gmail.commuprs@mup.gov.rsmilorad.veljovic@mup.gov.rs

SAMPLE LETTER.

Dear ladies and gents of the Serbian police and government authorities;

I write regarding the following video which I am informed was filmed in Milavac village, Serbia.

Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYF06B8tRGo&feature=youtu.be

I now request that you undertake full investigative action to ensure that all those involved in this clear abuse of animals are prosecuted under Article 269 of the Criminal Code of Serbia.

This type of animal abuse does not do your nation any good regarding its global audience.  You need to act and act now to ensure this does not happen again in future.  This is also not a good advertisement for Serbia and its wish to become a future member of the EU.

I may consider that is necessary to provide this video footage to the EU Parliament / Commission for their review.

Pending this; I ask once again that you act to prevent this kind of event ever taking place again in the future.  Today in the 21st Century, Europe must grow up and ensure that animal abuse becomes a thing of the past.  If it happens now, then you should be taking action to ensure that it does not happen in the future.

Thank You;

Yours truly,

YOUR Name and nationality.

PETITION

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/460/875/313/surabaya-zoo-animal-welfare-action-cee4life/

http://cee4life.org/press+release.php?ac=post&id=11&p=1

Lion/Lioness Hanging – A Killer in the Surabaya Zoo

On Monday 6th January 2014, a Lion/Lioness of Surabaya Zoo was found hanging from a snare inside of her cage.

The lion/lioness had lived in a dark dungeon like cage for a number of years and had displayed numerous signs of having deteriorated in a mental capacity.  It is thought that this deterioration was caused by her barren and desolate environment which consisted of a cement cell.

From first report, it is likely that someone from within or connected to the Surabaya Zoo has slung the hanging noose inside the cage then awaited for the lion/lioness to be near enough to tighten the noose around its neck and pull it up, eventually hanging the creature.

Director of Cee4life, Sybelle Foxcroft, said “This is a shocking development.  To resort to the killing of this Lioness/Lion by hanging, is something that is not only deplorable but a heavy insight into the characters in or involved or have obvious access to the Surabaya Zoo.”

Foxcroft continued, ” I am so shocked that I have barely any words for this heinous crime. I support the Indonesian authorities in finding those responsible and urge that the Indonesia authorities allow Cee4life and other organisations into Surabaya Zoo to help immediately with aid to the other animals and education and training to the staff.”

Cee4life urges the Mayor of Surabaya and the Director of Surabaya Zoo to immediately act on this crime, apprehend those responsible and prosecute them for the murder of a protected animal.

The death of this lioness/lion has sent shockwaves throughout conservation and animal loving community.  This brutal act is highly condemned worldwide and once again the Mayor of Surabaya is urged to act and allow animal welfare, veterinarians and animal skilled specialists and professionals into the Surabaya Zoo to bring immediate aid to these suffering creatures.

We understand that some people believe and/or think of animals as lower life form, resulting in horrific abuse on animals in both captivity and in the wild.  Over the years, via science and intense studies in animal welfare and behavior, it is well known and documented that animals in captivity have specific needs, have emotions and display specific behaviors when lacking any of their needs, they feel pain etc.  Education is vtial ingredient in preventing the human abuse towards animals type of thought process.

With the huge amount of media on the Surabaya Zoo exposing this abuse, along with the enormous amount of aid offered to Surabaya Zoo from conservation, animal welfare and zoological organisations, and now with the obvious deliberate killing of the lioness of Surabaya Zoo, again, we urge the Indonesian Authorities, the Mayor of Surabaya, the Director of Surabaya Zoo to allow conservation, animal welfare and zoological organisations into Surabaya Zoo to aid these animals and provide education to the staff.

The hanging death of this long suffering Lioness/Lion is unacceptable in any form.

Cee4life has a current petition which will be handed into the Mayor of Surabaya in the early part of 2014. Please take a moment to sign this petition –

please go to the bottom of the link above, and once accessed get further access to another 48 web pages of information.  Simply click on the boxed / page numbers.

The following are words written directly by Lesley:

Dear EU officials, CVO´s and Member State authorities, highway police and fellow NGO´s,

In June 2013 Eyes on Animals and Animal Welfare Foundation sent a team to check on some of the slaughterhosues where many of the EU animals being exported by the EU had been previously slaughtered.

We are only sending our reports out now to all of you, as up until now we wanted to give the slaughterhouses and Turkish CVO some time to react and make improvements, before going public with them.

We have just now come back from a second inspection in Turkey to re-visit these three plants and also check on new ones. Some minor improvements were made but welfare problems remain very serious.
Hopeful news is that the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture has a team drafting welfare legislation at the time of slaughter- which may come into existence in about 2 years. In the meantime we are trying to advise the slaughterhouses on how they could reduce suffering and are in communication with authority in Turkey about our observations.

For now, here are our reports from June. In early 2014 we will send you reports of other slaughterhouses we visited in December 2013.

Best wishes,

Lesley Moffat, MSc Ethology
Eyes on Animals
Director and inspector

In addition, we are supplying copies of three (3) reports which have been produced by EoA post their December 2013 visit to Turkey.  Access these by clicking on each of the following links:

Turkey is not currently a member state of the EU.  Regardless, we are attempting to ensure that animals at Turkish slaughterhouses are treated with the utmost respect.  Turkey aims to join the EU in future, and so it is our aim that by the time it becomes a member state, Turkey will have to install and operate CCTV in all of its slaughterhouses, as we hope will be the situation throughout Europe and all EU member states.

This directly links in with our campaign which is now underway to try and ensure that CCTV is fitted in the future to ALL slaughterhouses within EU nations.

Can you please ensure that these are stored in ‘My Favorites’ on Google so that you can access any time.

Simply click on the national flag link and then move on as required using the ‘TO PETITION’ link which is given at the end to take you through to the petition.

Please note that we are in the process of updating this continually to meet the demands of other nations.  At this very moment, we are having the petition translated into Serbian so that Serbia (another NON EU member state at present); can be worked on to ensure that CCTV will be installed in all their slaughterhouses before they become EU members.

It will not be a quick or easy campaign; but we are determined to ensure that CCTV in all EU slaughterhouses happens in the future.
