Dear Simonne,   January 2009.

white-bundas

This beautiful white Bundas has now arrived at our EPAR shelter with a big smile on his  face. We try to keep smiles on the faces of all our dogs and cats at EPAR shelter by providing them with love, care, a safe home and lots of good food.

The continued smiles on our EPAR shelter animalsv are kept because of the wonderful help which people and organisations such as yourselves are able to provide.

We are very, very grateful for your tireless help and support.

Today  is a real holiday  for our animals because now we have taken in your very wonderful donation of 600 kg of dry dog food into EPAR shelter.

food-jan-09

I am very happy that you may be able to help our 40 cats which live at EPAR shelter, as very often they have no choice but to have to eat dog food.

They will have big smiling faces if they have a delivery of cat food especially for themselves; very happy cats !

We are very, very  grateful to you all.  For all of the animals at EPAR shelter, there has been enough suffering in the past.  Now at the shelter it is time to try and give them a better and happier life for the future.

Without the help and support of our very many animal friends everywhere, our successes for the animals would be much harder to achieve.

Thank you again dear Simonne;

Love  and regards

England (Uk): The True Cost of Meat and Dairy

The TRUE Cost of Meat & Dairy

Before the advent of commercial farming, 85% of eastern Paraguay was forest. Now, with roughly 12% of it still standing, silence fills the air. ‘There used to be 2,000 families living here. Now there are only 30, if that,’ he continues. The story of Ramírez’s home village of Minga Porá is familiar in S. America. It is a story that starts on the dinner tables of the UK and other rich nations, where a hunger for meat and dairy products fuels an ever-rising demand for the industrial farming of animals using high-protein feed.

At the bottom of this food chain is the soya plant. Millions of hectares of intensively cultivated soya are gnawing at tropical forests and savannah – displacing farmers and communities, leading to poverty, ill-health and even violence, ruining habitats and exacerbating global warming.

A report by campaign group Friends of the Earth has been published to focus the attention of UK consumers and the government on the scale of this destruction. It will detail for the first time the cutting, burning and spraying that occurs as a consequence. The report, What’s Feeding our Food?, will start a campaign urging the government to take action, ending subsidies and other policies that encourage intensive farming and making sure public money spent on food is not propping up damaging practices.

Across the main soya-producing countries of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, an area the size of California has been cleared for this one crop, which is exported around the world, mainly to the EU and China. As the third biggest customer in the EU, the UK required nearly 1.2m hectares – an area the size of Devon and Cornwall – to generate the 1.7m tonnes of soya beans and 652,000 tonnes of crushed soya meal imported in the most recent year for which figures are available, 2006-7. That was most of the soya used by UK farmers producing 850m broiler chickens, 10 billion eggs, 10m turkeys, 4.9m pigs and 10m cattle for dairy and beef.

Some of this food is exported, but imports, mostly from the EU, are also reared using soya feed, says the report. ‘Even though bacon, burgers, milk and cheese may be produced in the UK, most will have come from animals fed on crops grown on the other side of the world,’ it says. Nor is the pace of change slackening: this year official estimates judge that soya production will increase in all 3 major producers.

Although demand for meat is largely flat in the UK, it is growing in developing countries. Attracted by generous offers from Brazilian-born soya growers, Ramírez’s neighbours began selling their plots. Soon herbicides began to contaminate the land and water supplies. His own crops began to fail. Worried the chemicals would harm his family, Ramírez decided to leave. The destruction wreaked by soya has forced about 90,000 families in the neighbouring state of Caaguazú to leave their homes since the mid-Nineties, according to Javiera Rulli, a biologist for Asunción-based research group BASE, and the editor of a book on soya’s expansion in S. America. ‘The expansion of GM soya is leading to social conflict and mass migration,’ she says.

In Paraguay, in the tiny rural hamlet of San Isidro, resident Cipriano Vega says there has been a surge in diseases that were almost unknown in the community previously.  Diarrhoea, rashes, headaches, allergies, chest infections and epilepsy are all commonplace now, he alleges. The community has asked the local government to test the water supply, but to no avail. The World Health Organisation estimates that, excluding suicide, 355,000 people a year are poisoned by chemicals, and agrochemicals are a major contributor, particularly pesticides.

‘Most people don’t realise that there’s a hidden chain of events linking the meat and dairy they buy to factory farming and to climate change, deforestation and loss of livelihoods in developing countries,’ said Clare Oxborrow, FoE’s senior food campaigner.

Serbia: Beautiful Environmental Region of Serbia to Become Ski Centre – Please Read and Take Action

VERY IMPORTANT – Please Act !

Please view the following link for more pictures:

http://www.stara-planina.net/pictures.html

Some of the political elite in Serbia wish to turn a Serbian environmental region of outstanding natural beauty into a Ski Centre.

Please watch the excellent video below to obtain more information:

Take special note of the ‘conflict of interests’ detailed at 4 minutes 20 seconds into the video.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=bqESCXihr0Q

Then, Please Act !

A sample letter which can be copied and mailed, or changed to your own personal letter is given at the end of this post.

People can send their letter and / or comments to the Serbian Minister of the EnvironmentMr.Oliver Dulic

E mail:  info@ekoserb.sr.gov.yu

Mr. Dulic is a member of Democracy Party of Serbian President, Mr. Boris Tadic.

From information which has been provided to SAV, a group of environmental volunteers met with the Minister of the Environment, Mr. Dulic, and it appears that allegedly they were told to bring a criminal charge against the government !

Knowing that this will cost money and that the government may possibly have just slightly more influence in the result where it is needed than the campaigners, the environmental campaigners wishing to save Stara Planina are now calling on everybody to help them in their campaign to stopping the ski centre being constructed.

There is a Serbian web site dedicated to saving Stara Planina;

http://www.staraplanina.rs/

and we have also been informed that allegedly the Serbian government has tried many times to remove or destroy this web site and all the information on it.  Democracy ?

An English translation of the web site can also be found at:

http://translate.google.com/translate?client=tmpg&hl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.staraplanina.rs%2F&langpair=sr|en

Also, it is said that one Professor,  Lidija Amidzic, who objected to what was being proposed by the government to turn the area into a Ski centre, was removed from her position as a Director at the Institute for the protection of nature – Zavod za zastitu prirode.  The institute is a state organisation which would normally be consulted with by the Ministry for the Environment regarding any proposal, such as the ski centre construction.

But in her position as Director of the Institute being consulted by the government, Professor Lidija Amidzic did not agree with the construction of the ski and tourist centre.  Mr. Mladjan Dinkic of the G17 political party was not pleased with her views on the proposed plans, and allegedly he informed Professor Amidzic that she would as soon as possible be removed from her from her position as Director of the Institute.

This removal of position as a Director was later undertaken by the government without any further explaination / justification.

Professor Lidija Amidzic is no longer able to make decisions relating to the environment; she currently still has a job at the Institute, but not anything as influential as the Director that she was.  The Institute now has a Director in place who agrees with the building of a tourist and sky centre at Stara Planina; just as the government would like !

It would appear that the government have the power and influence to be able to remove anyone who opposes their environmental views; the example being Professor Amidzic being removed as Director of the Institute for voicing her opposition to the ski centre !; even when as a Director of the Institute for the protection of nature she should have been free to disagree with environmentally damaging construction and planning proposals.

Professor Lidija Amidzic is an environmental person who wishes to save Stara Planina as the beautiful area that it already is; free from the huge construction work which will happen there.  She has spoken out (as Institute Director) against the ski centre plans to the government and has now been removed from her position.

A Petition for saving Stara Planina, which is written in English, can be found via the following link:

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION, Thank You.

Please give your support to our friends and campaigners at http://www.staraplanina.rs/

Sir;

I am writing to express my concerns that the beautiful parkland area of Southeastrn Serbia known as Stara Planina, may be turned into a massive Ski Centre simply because certain members of the existing Serbian government wish it to be !

Construction of the proposed ski centre will destoy the park as a result, and will include damage or detruction of the huge range of preserved landscapes and biodiversity for which the region is known.

Under the protection of heritage, Article 89, I understand that the citizens of Serbia shall be obliged to protect natural rarities and scientific, cultural and historical heritage, as well as goods of public interest in accordance with the law.

The government of the Republic of Serbia, as well as local government, have it their responsibility to protect the heritage of the Serbian Republic.  Article 74 states that everyone shall have the right to a healthy environment and the right to timely and full information about the condition of the environment.

It saddens and annoys me very much to understand that the wishes of a few Serbian politicians are trying to overrule the legal rights of the citizens of Serbia.  Could it be that these supportive politicians have personal business or financial interests in the proposals for development of Stara Planina ? – a ‘conflict of interests’ as defined in Article 6 of Serbian legislation ?

This situation annoys me enough that I feel I must present this information to my Members of the European Parliament (MEP).  Serbia wishes to gain accession (membership) of the EU very soon, but I would like to remind you sir that in order to gain EU membership, and under the rules of the 1993 EU ‘Copenhagen Agreement’, EU membership criteria requires that a candidate state applying for membership must have achieved:

stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities;

I do not consider that the objectives of the Serbian government with regard Stara Planina can be described as either ‘Democratic’ or as enforcing the Serbian Republic ‘rule of law’.

Because of this and the existing Serbian governments views on the changes at Stara Planina, I am left with no choice but to question whether Serbia is currently achieving the necessary criteria for EU membership; and I will be asking my MEP(s) this question.

Please do not change Stara Planina in any way; keep it as it is, a place of outstanding natural beauty for all of the citizens of serbia, not simply for the wishes of a few politicians !

Yours

Can You Give Just 20 Seconds a Day to Help Get Food Donated to Abused and Neglected Animals ? – YES; Then Please Read On….

Hi, all you animal lovers.

This is pretty simple… Please tell ten friends to tell ten today!

The Animal Rescue Site is having  trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute (How about 20  seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box ‘fund food for animals’ for free.

This doesn’t cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here’s the web site!

Pass it along please.

The goal of changing the world is finding an equilibrium between generosity and gratitude – which is an expression of real love”. – don Miguel A. Ruiz

Please do it regularly; like every day !

2. Israel To Fund Medical Care For War-Injured Animals

SOURCE: 1/6/09, Ynetnews
FULL STORY: State to help fund treatment of pets hurt by rockets
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3651173,00.html

Last week a Qassam rocket hit a house in Sderot and killed the family’s dog,
which was at the building’s yard during the attack. The dog was rushed to
the veterinarian for treatment, but died due to severe shrapnel injuries and
massive loss of blood.

Following this incident and in light of the fact that like their human
owners, pets in Israel’s south are also under the constant rocket threat,
the Agriculture Ministry has decided it would help pay for the medical care
of dogs and cats injured by rocket fire from Gaza.

“One of the main problems arising from the treatment of wounded animals is
that the tax authorities do not consider pets as property, and therefore
owners are not compensated for medical treatment of the animal,” said Dganit
Ben-Dov, DVM, the Veterinary Services official in charge of enforcing the
Animal Protection Law.

“This is the aspect we wish to rectify, since treatment to a wounded animal
could cost thousands of shekels,” she added. According to Ben-Dov, the
ministry will also consider funding treatment of street cats and dogs…

Denmark: Response Given to Faroes Pilot Whale Annual Slaughter

Denmark has now provided campaigners with a rather pathetic attempt to justify the annual slaughter of Faroe Island Pilot whales, photographs of which can be seen here with additional images via the following SAV link:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2008/10/13/denmark-disgraces-the-world-with-faroe-islands-whale-slaughter/

The Danish response is as follows: – ‘Asli’ is the campaigner who had the response in this case.

—————-

Dear Asli

Thank you for your recent letter regarding whaling in the Faroes.

Your concern and interest is greatly appreciated. We are well aware that media and campaign reports about whaling in the Faroes can be very disturbing when presented out of context, without a reliable and factual explanation of the circumstances, regulations and management measures in place. We are therefore grateful for this opportunity to provide you with some basic facts about the Faroes and our utilisation of whales. More detailed information is available on the websites listed below.

The Faroes are a self-governing nation under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. The Faroese Parliament legislates independently of Denmark on all areas of self-government, including the conservation and management of fish and whale stocks within the 200-mile fisheries zone. Unlike Denmark, the Faroes are not a member of the EU, but maintain bilateral trade agreements and bilateral fisheries agreements with the EU and a number of other countries, including our nearest neighbours, Norway and Iceland.

The economy of the Faroe Islands is overwhelmingly dependent on the sustainable use of marine resources, with commercial fisheries being the main industry.

Pilot whales and other small whales are utilised for food in the Faroes and represent one of very few local sources of meat. Both the meat and blubber of pilot whales have for centuries been a staple part of the national diet. Whale drives are fully regulated by law and regulations and catches are shared on a community basis among the participants in a whale drive and residents of the local district where the whales are landed. The annual average catch of around 900 whales is roughly equivalent to 500 tonnes of meat and blubber, some 30% of all meat produced locally in the Faroes.

Scientists estimate the stock in the North Atlantic to be over 700,000, which means that the average catch is fully sustainable. Only schools of whales that are sighted close to shore are utilised. Continuous annual catch statistics dating back to around 1600 make Faroese whaling one of the best documented uses of a natural resource anywhere in the world.

Faroese animal welfare legislation, which also applies to whaling, requires that animals suffer as little as possible when killed. Entire schools of whales are killed on the shore and in the shallows of bays especially authorised for the purpose. Knives are used to sever the major blood supply to the brain. This is the most efficient and humane means of killing a school of beached pilot whales quickly and safely, but naturally results in a lot of blood in the water. Killing methods in Faroese whaling are subject to regular veterinary monitoring programmes, which examine the times-to-death of individual animals in the hunt and the efficiency of the organisation of the drive and the equipment used.

The Faroes cooperate internationally through NAMMCO – the North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission on the conservation of whales and the management of whaling, which includes valuable technical cooperation with other countries in the region on hunting methods, as well as an international observation scheme to ensure international transparency and oversight in national regulations.

Internationally adopted principles for the conservation and sustainable use of living marine resources apply to all components of the marine ecosystem, including both fish and whales. Ensuring that utilisation of these resources is sustainable requires a sound scientific basis and international cooperation on the conservation and management of shared and highly migratory stocks. As a small nation highly dependent on the resources of the sea, commitment to upholding these principles is a priority for the Faroes.

Yours sincerely,

xxxxxxxxx

How Victor used to Live – Chained with Very Little Food and Water

Here is ‘VICTOR’ before he arrived at EPAR (our) shelter in May 2008 after being taken from his owner.  He  was very sad, much too thin, kept on a chain wrapped round his neck and often lived without  food or water.

A Sad and Very Thin Victor

Unfortunately, due to a lack of funds to build the 30 new shelter boxes which are required, a few of the dogs at EPAR shelter have to be kept on chains.  Hopefully, in the Spring of this year, dogs which are very frightened or which are very dominant, will be given new shelter boxes.  People are arriving at the shelter with new dogs very often.  We hope very much that we can find a new owner for many of the dogs, even though we wish to build new box shelters in the Spring.

Below is Victor now in January 2009, a much happy and healthier dog thanks to EPAR shelter.

‘PERICA’  is a dog which was beaten, thrown into a double layered sack and then placed into a garbage container where he would have been taken to the city dump and left to die.

Perica is named after the sweet little boy who found the dog, and with his parents, carried him all the way to the EPAR shelter.

Perica arrived at the shelter on the 3rd March 2008; he was immediately put on a drip and given other medical attention.
