USA: Act Now to Block Expanded Offshore Drilling.

https://worldanimalsvoice.com/2019/10/04/usa-act-now-block-expanded-offshore-drilling/

The U.S. House of Representatives recently voted to permanently ban offshore drilling in the Pacific, Atlantic, and eastern Gulf of Mexico. Both bills passed and are on their way to the Senate.

If passed, this legislation will be an incredible victory for marine wildlife and ocean ecosystems. Offshore drilling causes habitat destruction, ocean acidification, and oil spills, resulting in immense loss of wildlife and damage to coastal communities.

Mark, we need your help to thwart President Trump’s plans for expanded offshore oil drilling. Will you email your Senators today and urge them to pass this critical legislation?

H.R. 1941, the “Coastal and Marine Economies Protection Act of 2019,” would permanently block offshore oil and gas leasing in the Atlantic Ocean, Straits of Florida and the Pacific Ocean. H.R. 205 would amend the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006 to permanently block offshore oil and gas leasing off the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Our diverse marine ecosystems are already imperiled as a result of human-driven climate change. We cannot let the Trump administration continue to expand offshore drilling – to the benefit of the oil industry and huge detriment of wildlife, and indeed all life – and increase the burning of fossil fuels at a time when we need to be curbing use dramatically to slow the climate crisis.

Marine wildlife, including endangered sea turtles, dolphins, whales and sea birds, will continue to be injured and killed senselessly if we don’t put a stop to President Trump’s plans to expand offshore drilling.

Please, urge your Senators to act NOW for marine wildlife … for our irreplaceable oceans … and for our future generations. Tell your Senators to vote YES on H.R. 205 and H.R. 1941, and enact a permanent ban on offshore drilling in nearly all U.S. waters.

EU: Animal Welfare: Commission designates a second European Union Reference Centre

WAV Comment – May look good on paper, but we heard NOTHING about taking action against Romania over the 70,000 exported sheep that went to the Middle East in conditions which were NON COMPLIANT with EU Regulations on the Welfare of animals during transport ! –  Paper talk is one thing – action is another.

UPDATE:

1630 GMT 4/10/19 – Mark telephones the EU and says that he has been given the info (below) by the EU.

He then asks what violation action is being taken by the EU regarding the 70,000 sheep exported recently from Romania (EU) to Kuwait and Iran in temperatures which do not comply with EU Reg 1/2005 on the welfare of animals during transport.

The man on the phone cannot find anything or provide answers. He takes Marks contact details and assures that they will ask EU authorities for updates on the situation.

We now wait to hear back via e mail from the EU to find out what, if anything, has happened. We actually doubt if anything at all has taken place.

Regards Mark.

Animal Welfare: Commission designates a second European Union Reference Centre

Today, following a public selection process, the Commission has designated, as EU Reference Centre for the welfare of poultry and other small farmed animals, a consortium formed by the Agence Nationale de Sécurité Sanitaire de l’Alimentation (France), and also composed of the Institut de Recerca I Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (Spain), Aarhus Universitet – Institut for Husdyrvidenskab (Denmark), and Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia e dell’Emilia Romagna (Italy). A first centre was designated in March 2018, with works focusing on the welfare of pigs. This second Centre will expand the technical support and coordinated assistance to the Member States to carry out official controls on animal welfare. It will also contribute to the dissemination of good practices, as well as carrying out scientific studies, training courses and disseminating research and information on technical innovations. Improving the enforcement of the legislation is one of the Commission’s priorities in the area of animal welfare. Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis welcomed this designation, stating that “it confirms the Commission’s consistent and long term policy to support strong enforcement on animal welfare. After the designation of a first centre on the welfare of pigs, a second centre on poultry and other small-farmed animals was essential since these animals are subject to intensive production methods”.

…for the world animal day

We know that animals have no rights anywhere in the world, from clams to primates. What we, the human species, define as animal rights is merely a limitation of the violence and exploitation that we attribute sui generis about the existence of “other” animals.

We want to remind everyone of this fact today.
We must stop being the perpetrators, the animal tormentors, the privileged class in the animal kingdom, the rulers.

The World Animal Day is a memory of the still long way of fighting for the rights of animals.
If no animal is discriminated against because of its species affiliation, then we can speak of a just world.

In this sense, our contribution to this day is to confirm that we will continue to fight for our fellow creatures so that injustice stops and every “other” animal gets what it deserves: the right to life, freedom, happiness.

MISSION OF WORLD ANIMAL DAY

To raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals.  It’s celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or political ideology.  Through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare.

MISSION: TO RAISE THE STATUS OF ANIMALS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE WELFARE STANDARDS AROUND THE GLOBE

To achieve this, we encourage animal welfare organisations, community groups, youth and children’s clubs, businesses and individuals to organise events in celebration of World Animal Day. Involvement is growing at an astonishing rate and it’s now widely accepted and celebrated in a variety of different ways in many countries, with no regard to nationality, religion, faith or political ideology.

Events are organised under the World Animal Day Umbrella by being publicised on this website and advertised using the World Animal Day brand and logo. Global branding effectively ties all events together and, over the years we have found this approach to be particularly helpful to grassroots groups who struggle to attract media attention in order to raise awareness of their work and fundraise. This draws attention to animal issues and makes them front-page news – a vital catalyst for change. Each year the logo becomes more widely recognised as a global brand for animals.  A brand that unites the animal welfare movement – firmly establishing itself as a platform for raising the status of animals.

Participation in World Animal Day will continue to grow until it reaches and connects animal advocates in all corners of the world.  It’s something that everyone can join in with, whether they are part of an organisation, group, or an individual.  We regularly receive wonderfully inspiring messages about World Animal Day from animal advocates around the world.  For example: “Thank you once again for your inspiration and support towards this auspicious World Animal Day that continues to make a huge difference for animals in Africa and the world at large.” Josphat Ngonyo, Executive Director, Africa Network for Animal Welfare, and “What World Animal Day is doing for animals is truly influencing all of us in amazing ways.”

Why celebrate World Animal Day?

Building the celebration of World Animal Day mobilises people for action now for a better future for animals.

Throughout history, social movements (mass actions) like World Animal Day, have always been a major vehicle for ordinary people’s participation in politics, and key in fighting for social justice and reform. The lives of animals are profoundly affected by the actions of individuals, businesses, and nations.  It’s therefore essential that, as sentient beings, their rightful status as recipients of social justice is established and translated into effective animal protection.  World Animal Day embraces all animals and the unique concerns of each, in every country, and makes animals front-page news. Through increased awareness and education, we can help develop a compassionate culture which feeds into legal reform and social progress to make this world a fairer place for all living creatures.  A world where animals are recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare. World Animal Day has already brought about a significant and lasting contribution towards advancing animal welfare standards, and its influence will only continue to grow. We regularly receive heart-warming messages from people keen to tell us about what being involved with World Animal Day has helped them achieve and we’d like to share a few of these phenomenal victories with you now.

  • Amina Abaza, who heads the Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt (SPARE), has used World Animal Day to successfully lobby for the addition of a clause about animal welfare in the new Egyptian Constitution and, more recently, submitted a Model Animal Welfare Act to the Egyptian Parliament.

  • Another ground-breaking event achieved by SPARE was held at Cairo University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine where animals are used in education. Attended by professors, students, the Dean and Vice Dean of the Faculty, and other dignitaries, speeches were made by the President of the Egyptian Veterinary Association and representatives of several, highly-respected animal welfare NGOs to increase awareness about alternatives to the use of animals in education and a film was shown about animal suffering throughout the world

Scotland: A man who bought cats on Gumtree to use as live bait for fighting dogs has been jailed for 10 months.

A man who bought cats on Gumtree to use as live bait for fighting dogs has been jailed for 10 months.

Scottish SPCA inspectors who searched Mark Cuthbert’s home in South Ayrshire found photos and videos of dead cats, badgers and foxes.

He is believed to have bought the cats online from sellers who believed they were going to a safe home.

Dog fighting equipment including tracking collars, nets and animal traps were also found at the house in Ayr.

Cuthbert, 42, was sentenced at Ayr Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to keeping three dogs, cats and a rat for animal fighting, and procuring cats for fights.

As well as his 10-month jail sentence, he was banned from keeping animals for 10 years.

Mark Cuthbert

The court heard Scottish SPCA inspectors went to Cuthbert’s home with a warrant on 16 March last year where they found three Patterdale Terriers – two of them older dogs and the third a puppy.

A specialist vet found the older animals, called Digger and Billy, had multiple injuries, some of them recent, consistent with fighting a badger.

Digger and the puppy were rehomed, but Billy was so aggressive he had to be put down after attacking a Scottish SPCA employee.

Cuthbert’s phone was seized during the search and images and videos were found of his dogs killing domestic cats and a rat in a trap.

There were also pictures of his dogs with apparently dead and bloody badgers

A Scottish SPCA undercover investigator said the case was one of the most upsetting and “depraved” they had encountered.

One video showed the three dogs attacking a domestic cat in a field as it fought for its life.

“It’s clear the cat was caused horrendous suffering and many of the cats he purchased will have suffered long, torturous deaths,” he said

“Cuthbert had been picking up the cats for his dogs to attack from the online selling site, Gumtree.

“After contacting Gumtree, we found correspondence between Cuthbert and people who had listed their cats on the site which led us to believe large numbers of cats were uplifted from pet owners who trusted their cats were going to a good, safe home.”

The charity urged pet owners to carry out thorough checks when selling or rehoming animals online.

“If you are using an online service to find a new home for, or sell, your pet, please be vigilant and ensure your pet is going to a safe environment,” the investigator said.

” If you are suspicious, do not continue with the sale and notify the Scottish SPCA as soon as possible.”
