The rock star made sure his anthem ‘Heroes’ was licensed to the documentary ‘The Cove’ for a pittance so it could help stop the killing of dolphins and whales.

David Bowie is being remembered as a musical genius, a gifted artist, and a fashion icon. But to whale and dolphin activists, he was nothing short of a hero.

Bowie’s hauntingly moving song “Heroes,” the title track of his 1977 album, has become a rallying cry for people around the world working to end the killing and capture of whales and dolphins at the cove in Taiji, Japan.

The song, which includes the lyrics “I, I wish you could swim / Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim,” accompanies the closing credits of the 2009 documentary The Cove, which brought global attention to the annual slaughter in Taiji.

Most people don’t know that Bowie, a quiet but generous supporter of animal welfare causes who died on Sunday at 69, personally intervened to make sure the song could be licensed for a minimal fee.

Cove director Louie Psihoyos said the movie’s producer, Fisher Stevens, knew Bowie’s wife, Iman. “That’s how we got through to him,” he said. “If we’d had to go through record-company channels, it never would’ve happened.”

According to Psihoyos, the cost of licensing a rock song for commercial films starts at about $25,000 and can reach six figures. After hearing about the film, Bowie insisted that RCA Records make “Heroes” available for $3,000.

“They had to charge something so they weren’t giving it away,” Psihoyos said. “It was hardly worth the time for the record label to write up the contract.”

A licensing employee for Sony Music Entertainment, which owns RCA Records, confirmed that the fee was reduced but said the amount paid “is confidential.”

The song, reportedly about an East German and West German couple who meet at the Berlin Wall—“I, I can remember (I remember) / Standing, by the wall (by the wall) / And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads)”—became a powerful anthem for the anti-whaling movement.

I didn’t know at the time about his support for animal rights,” Psihoyos said of Bowie. “But it turns out he had a huge heart.”

Ric O’Barry, star of The Cove and founder of Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project, said that during the film’s closing credits, “people jump out of their seats and want to do something.

That song reenergizes people and helps keep the issue alive. Sometimes I meet people, and when they recognize me, they start singing ‘Heroes.’ ”

“There is nothing to galvanize a community around a movement like a movie, and with every social movement, you always needed songs,” Psihoyos said. “This was a song for that moment.”

The moment lives on.

This Saturday in London, thousands of people are expected to march to the Japanese Embassy to protest the dolphin drives, which run every September to March.

Bowie and his hit single will be featured prominently during the day.

“We’re going to make it a massive tribute to Bowie,” said protest organizer Nicole Venter, founder of MEOKO, a platform for electronic music.

Venter said some protesters will be wearing Bowie masks and brandishing banners bearing his image. Meanwhile, a vintage car will lead the march, blasting sounds of dolphins being killed at the cove—and, of course, “Heroes.”

“We will probably play it several times, and people will sing along,” Venter said. “Still, this won’t become a circus. We’re there for the dolphins, but we also want to pay tribute to Bowie.”

The singer, who later sported a dolphin tattoo, was working to save dolphins and whales as early as 1972, when Bowie and the Spiders From Mars headlined the Friends of the Earth Save the Whale Benefit Concert in London.

O’Barry will not be at the protest. He leaves Sunday for Taiji, where police briefly detained him last August. On Tuesday, his Dolphin Project said 35 to 40 striped dolphins were killed at the cove.

“I think London is one of the keys of stopping the slaughter,” O’Barry said.

“ ‘Heroes’ is our theme song, and they’re going to play it loud,” he added. “The Japanese government will have a very difficult time dealing with that PR nightmare.

Thank you, David Bowie.”

Dear Mark,

I’ve had enough, and tonight I’m hitting the road — departing for the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, which was illegally taken over on Jan. 2 by armed fanatics who want to seize millions of acres of publicly owned lands.

These yahoos may have become a national joke, but their movement is dead serious — it’s part of a committed campaign to rob us of our wild heritage.

That’s why I’ll be heading to Burns tomorrow, and with the Center’s partners we’ll be organizing rallies in Portland and Eugene on Tuesday to stand against the armed thugs seizing public land — land that we all own.

They even whined online for their supporters to send them snacks. Well we won’t send them any snacks, but we will speak out for those who value this land, and against these creeps who think they can take it by force.

I’m deeply concerned about this bullying behavior — still undeterred by federal law enforcement — and the support voiced by some lawmakers for the occupiers’ message. Although these anti-government fanatics operate on the fringes, this seizure is happening in a broader context: There’s a growing movement afoot to take away these lands and open them up to mining, logging, drilling and other profit-driven methods of destruction.

Whether it’s against the Bundy family or politicians in Congress, the Center for Biological Diversity will fight tooth and nail to protect these special places from seizure. We need you with us to support our work to protect America’s public lands with a contribution to our new Public Lands Defense Fund. This isn’t the first time we’ve faced down the Bundys and their gun-toting bullies. We’ve gone toe-to-toe with them over their illegal grazing operations in Nevada and their paranoid attempts to steal what belongs to all Americans.

This year will be an all-out fight against those who think our public forests, deserts and prairies exist to make money for a few, instead of as places that give us clean air, water, wildlife habitat and landscapes that inspire and rejuvenate.

Selling these places to the highest bidder — or giving in to the demands of armed lunatics — robs us all. The Center will be there to fight each and every time. It won’t be easy. The Utah legislature recently committed $12 million to hire lobbyists and lawyers in a coordinated campaign to seize control of millions of public acres that they intend to parcel off to the highest bidder. We can’t match the money of the cattle, mining, logging and fracking industries, so we’ll have to organize our nearly 1 million supporters and our lean, experienced team of lawyers, scientists and activists to take this struggle to the statehouses and the courthouses, from Congress to the streets.

You can pitch in with a donation to the Center’s new Public Lands Defense Fund. We’ll dedicate your gift to defeating the radicals trying to seize our public inheritance. We won’t let them get away with it — neither the gun-toting jerks who have taken over a crucial wildlife preserve, nor their friends who would steal our land like thieves in the night.

I know what I’m getting into by heading to Oregon — I’ve been tracking the situation closely and have a clear sense of who these people are. But I’m heartened to know that you’re with me and that I’m carrying the message of all who can’t go in person to stand up for these special lands and what they mean.

Please join us at our protests across Oregon if you can, and please give to the Public Lands Defense Fund.

For the wild,

Kierán Suckling

England / EU: Break The Cage – Take Action To Stop Rabbit Farming In The EU.

EnglandEUUN0001

CIWF Rabbits

Rabbits form an integral part of everyone’s childhood. From a family pet, to Beatrix Potter’s mischievous Peter Rabbit, to the lovable cartoon character Bugs Bunny, or the falsely accused Roger Rabbit. But, this year, the lives of 330 million rabbits in Europe will be anything but a fairy tale.

Rabbits are the most caged farmed animal in Europe.

For them, life is a horror story, permanently confined in tiny, barren cages, unable to hop, skip or jump.

You are one of over 381,620 people who have already told Europe’s Agriculture Ministers and the European Parliament it’s time to End the Cage Age for rabbits. Thank you so much for signing Compassion’s petition.

Now, will you get us to the next big milestone? Can you help us secure over half a million signatures and make this a petition that Europe’s policymakers cannot ignore?

hop_-skip_-jump

Here are some easy ways you can grow the petition:

This year alone, there will be over 300 million reasons to end the caging of farmed rabbits.

With your support, we will be able to present Europe’s Agriculture Ministers and the European Parliament with a public demand they cannot ignore.

Please help us secure half a million voices to end this horror story.

Thank you,

 James West – Campaign Manager

Mark,

One of the world’s top bee scientists has been suspended for publishing research on bee-killing pesticides.

Jonathan Lundgren was an award-winning scientist for 11 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But once he started publishing data linking pesticides to bee and butterfly die-offs, he was ordered to stop talking.

When he refused, he was suspended.

bee 1

Now Jonathan is fighting back. He’s filed a whistleblower complaint to make sure that corporations can’t get away with gagging science.

Will you chip in to help make sure that Jonathan Lundgren and other bee scientists can speak the truth without harassment?

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen corporate-influenced governments trying to silence bee scientists.

In the U.K., the government silenced scientists who disagreed with a decision to lift a ban on bee-killing pesticides. Big Ag lobbyists wanted the ban lifted, but when the scientists wouldn’t go along with it, the government simply told them not to publish their views.

bee 4

But this time the corporations picked on the wrong scientist. Jonathan Lundgren is refusing to back down.

Now a judge has ruled that Jonathan’s whistleblower complaint may go forward — meaning he has a real chance of getting justice and showing how corporations are exerting undue influence over government research.

Will you chip in to help fight back?

 GERM0001

ERFOLG in Rumänien:

<!–[if !supportLists]–>§  <!–[endif]–>Streunerhunde werden kastriert und dann ZURUCKGEBRACHT zu ihrem ursprünglichen Platz, und sie bekommen den Status von Gemeinde-Hunden (Artikel 3 (6) a);

<!–[if !supportLists]–>§  <!–[endif]–>die Hunde zu ihrem Ursprungsort zurückzubringen, ist immer die bevorzugte Lösung” (Artikel 3 (8) d);

<!–[if !supportLists]–>§  <!–[endif]–>Es ist verboten, Hunde zu fangen und ins Tierheim zu bringen, die schon kastriert und zurückgebracht wurden (es sei denn, sie werden agressiv oder brauchen dringend tierärztliche Betreuung) (Artikel 3 (7) b);

<!–[if !supportLists]–>§  <!–[endif]–>Agressive Hunde dürfen nur eingeschläfert werden, wenn das agressive Verhalten von einer Kommission erfahren und bestätigt wird, die aus Vertretern des Stadtrats und Vertretern einer Tierschutz-Organisation (NGO) besteht, und mit der Unterschrift von mindestens zwei Zeugen bestätigt wird! (Artikel 3 (8) ). Einschläferung ist nur für Hunde mit unheilbaren Krankheiten vorgesehen (Artikel 3 (8) d). Einschläferung darf nur in der Gegenwart eines Vertreters einer NGO ausgeübt werden (Ausnahmen sind Fälle von höherer Gewalt, und nur, nachdem die NGO davon benachrichtigt wurde, dass ein Hund dringend eingeschläfert werden muss) (Artikel 3 (9) );

<!–[if !supportLists]–>§  <!–[endif]–>Vertreter von NGOs haben unbeschränkten Zugang zum öffentlichen Tierheim (Artikel 7);

<!–[if !supportLists]–>§  <!–[endif]–>Eine mobile Klinik wird zur Verfügung stehen, die Sterilisationen, Notbehandlung, Impfungen usw. ausführen kann (Artikel 3 (12) );

<!–[if !supportLists]–>§  <!–[endif]–>Um die Sterilisierung von Hunden mit Eigentümern zu erleichtern, wurde eine Bestimmung hinzugefügt, die von Tierärzten, die für die Stadt arbeiten, verlangt, dass sie nicht mehr verlangen für die Sterilisierung von Hunden mit Eigentümern als das, was sie für Streunerhunde bekommen. (Artikel 5 (9) );

<!–[if !supportLists]–>§  <!–[endif]–>Eine Polizei-Station für Tiere wird eingerichtet, bei der bis zu vier Polizisten arbeiten, die im Umgang mit Tieren trainiert wurden. Diese Station wird bei ALLEN Aktivitäten mit Vertretern einer NGO zusammenarbeiten (Artikel 11);

Alles Gute,

Carmen ARSENE

Success in Romania: Ploiesti City Council ADOPTED Humane Stray Dog Management

Dear Friends,

I start this year with the announcement of some good news, hoping that other towns will pick up the same policy and that the officials will show some wisdom.

Alliance for Humane Rights in Romania (ADOR) from Ploiesti initiated a Public Hearing about stray dogs in Ploiesti where I had the honor to be invited as the Chairman of the Committee of Experts, by journalist Eugen Cristescu, ADOR’s president.

Later I developed a specific report of the Public Hearing and I also drew up a Draft Local Council Decision for the management of stray dogs that we presented and proposed to local councilors of the Ploiesti City Council and to other local authorities present. It was advocated and lobbied for under the campaign slogan “No stray dogs any more – through ethics and rationality” which was initiated by ADOR. I explained to the councilors the correct, humane, and effective strategy that should be implemented to solve the stray dog problem and ADOR consistently and effectively lobbied the proposed project.

After several modifications of the project which were proposed by both sides (we tried to argue every change we made against the changes made by the local councilors at the expense of the animals) we managed to keep most of the provisions of the draft project in the form that I had drawn up, as close as possible to the demands of ethics, civilization, and efficiency.

The Draft Project was voted for unanimously by the local councilors of Ploiesti and represents a great success, especially within the context of current policies in Romania where the legislation promotes mass killings, and especially in a city like Ploiesti which almost constantly had serious problems concerning cruel and illegal stray dog management, which is well known everywhere abroad.

The most important provisions of the Local Council Decision are:

stray dogs will be neutered and RETURNED to their former place and they will have the status of community dogs; (Article 3 (6) a);

returning dogs to their place of origin is always preferred solution” (Article 3 (8) d);

it is prohibited to catch and accommodate in the shelter those dogs that were already returned (unless they become aggressive or require urgent medical care) (Article 3 (7) b);

Aggressive dogs shall be euthanized only if aggressiveness is ascertained and confirmed by a commission formed by representatives of the City Council and representatives of an Animal Welfare Organization (NGO) and confirmed by the signatures of at least two witnesses! (Article 3 (8)). Euthanasia is recommended only for dogs with incurable diseases (Article 3 (8) d). Euthanasia will be performed only in the presence of an NGO representative (except for cases of force majeure and only if the NGO has been notified about the fact there is a dog that needs to be urgently euthanized;) (Article 3 (9));

NGO representatives have unrestricted access to the public shelter (Article 7);

A mobile clinic will be established that can perform sterilizations, emergency treatment, vaccinations, etc. (Article 3 (12));

To facilitate sterilization of dogs with owners a provision has been added that asks of vets who contract with City Hall to provide sterilization services for stray dogs to charge no more for the sterilization of dogs with owners (Article 5 (9));

A Police Department for Animals will be established which will be made up of four police officers who will be trained in animal welfare. The Department will work with representatives of NGOs in ALL their actions (Article 11);

City Hall, in collaboration with the NGOs, will run media campaigns for the project and raise awareness by educating the public of the necessity to respect animal rights by: implementation of programs of information and education, also in schools; arrangement of advertising in public spaces to promote adoption and sterilization; organization of bimonthly fairs for adoptions; printing and sharing of   information material in schools, parks, owners’ associations, public services (Article 8).

We hope that other mayors will stop the cruel and ineffective management of stray dogs and will transition to the example of Ploiesti’s City Council for adopting a humane and efficient dog management.

All the best,

Carmen ARSENE

LiveExport – GlobalVoice4Animals

Latest news on the Ocean Outback indicates it is being held well out to sea (about 110 km), west of Perth.

The sea conditions in the area are moderate to rough, and temperatures are high, all of which is not very good at all for the welfare of the animals.

Of course, the exporter’s spokesman continues to report that it’s all good on board, along with the broken record like announcements about the so called excellent ventilation characteristics of the ship. However, the facts are not changed by his childish propaganda. Animals are dying. It should be noted that the ship went well beyond 50 km out, so far out that, at one point, it seriously looked like it was being taken out of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone, which is 320 km out. No doubt a main reason to go so far out would have been to get rid of the evidence of the deaths.

aus exports jan 16 3

This is day 11 of this sorry saga, and nothing of substance has progressed. The ship is not going to the Middle East, realistically it can’t in its present condition. It can really only make it to a South East Asian destination, but sheep are not wanted there. So, no matter what, the sheep will have to be taken off this ship.

The Ocean Drover is currently less than 2 days north of Perth en route to Portland, Victoria. It’s possible that it could be diverted to Fremantle as part of a possible the contingency plan, but that would take several days, and the load would be well below its carrying capacity. We also believe that mixing the stranded consignment (which no longer has a permit to be sent to Israel) with others would be out of the question due mainly to quarantine rules. The upshot is, we don’t believe the Ocean Drover will be used as a replacement ship.

There is another livestock ship, the Lincoln Express, which has rather suspiciously been moored off the coast of Fremantle for several days now. It is possible that it is in the process of being chartered as a replacement vessel, however, as we mentioned earlier, to our knowledge, there is no longer a destination for the stranded consignment.

This is dragging on and on, and there is no relief in sight for the animals.

We will continue to be bombarded with all the usual spin from the industry about how good the conditions are on this ship. But have a good look at this photo (courtesy of Animals Australia)…it graphically shows the filth the animals are being kept in. It was taken only on day 7 of this fiasco, we are now at day 11. Bear in mind that this only shows the edge of the vessel, it would have been much worse internally. This is from the operator whose management continually announces to the world that it is the best of any of them and animal welfare is its priority. Well, if this is the best, and if this is its standard of animal welfare ‘priority’, it speaks volumes about the animal welfare standards of the whole industry.

We also have to ask why it is that this industry is able to refuse RSPCA inspections, and why it is that they can dictate there own terms, in particular the timing, of any inspections it might begrudgingly agree to? It’s thoroughly indicative of a whitewash and a cover up. As a result of the 2011 revelations on 4 Corners, the industry promised that things would immediately change, that it would comply with community expectations, and that the situation had heralded in a new dawn of transparency, so that the public could have confidence that things really had changed. Well, since that time, the opposite has been the case, and in fact, its getting more and more opaque. Of course, there is a good reason for this; it simply cannot allow transparency, because that would expose the truth of the inherent, systemic cruelty of the trade.

We’d like to raise one more point of observation for now; there is an extraordinary lack of coverage of this obvious and developing animal welfare crisis on the part of Australia’s media. There have been a few narrow, brief articles here and there, all of which insist on prominently promulgating the industry’s repetitive, lengthy and patronising spin, but there has been no effort made by any media outlet to pursue, for themselves, the actual truth. That is an abject journalistic failure, and it is one of the main reasons this cruel industry still exists in this country.

Shame Australia, shame shame shame!

Here’s a typical example, but note the photo in it of conditions in a pen on the ship. It would have been selected as a better one to show by this pro live export rag, yet it is still shows how filthy things are!

TO GET INVOLVED AND TAKE ACTION:

Dear Mark

Sorry for the lack of communication over the debacle that is the Ocean Outback – it has been a hectic week and most of our outreach now is through facebook. 13,000 animals set sail for brutal slaughter in Israel’s Dabbah abattoir on 29 December last year after loading on the 28th and 29th at Fremantle Port. They returned to anchorage off Fremantle on the 30th and 11 days after the first animals were loaded, suffering temperatures even exceeding 40 degrees, they are still on there, apart from the (reported) 12 sheep and two cattle who have died so far – the lucky ones. As this is written, they still sit off the coast of Fremantle in limbo.

Please join Stop Live Exports in protesting loudly at the abhorrent treatment the victims of this trade suffer abroad AND here.

Mark Pearson, Animal Justice Party NSW MP is flying over to join us – Mark is a long time animal activist, once heading up Animal Liberation NSW and is only the second person IN THE WORLD, to be elected to Parliament on an animal protection platform.

N.C. Farmworker Convicted of Animal Cruelty, but How Many Others Won’t Be?

The state’s new ag-gag law turns heroes into villains and shields animal abusers.

MFA No gag april 15

Our recent post on this issue, complete with the video footage – done with MFA.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/12/10/usa-mfa-exposes-mfa-exposes-criminal-animal-abuse-at-perdue-farms/

Jason Best is a regular contributor to TakePart who has worked for Gourmet and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

A North Carolina farmworker who was shown in an undercover video brutally abusing chickens has been convicted of animal cruelty, but for animal activists, it’s a case of bittersweet American justice.

First, the good news: The worker, Danny Miranda, has been sentenced to 45 days in the Richmond County jail and a year’s probation, and he has been barred from working with animals. The conviction comes less than a month after the nonprofit group Mercy for Animals released undercover video footage of horrendous abuse by Miranda and other workers at two factory farms that supply chickens for poultry giant Perdue.

Supplied chickens, that is—a company spokeswoman told the local Richmond County paper that Perdue had severed ties with the farms and that any subcontractor seen on the video “mishandling” (i.e., terrorizing) birds had either been fired or “retrained.”

You probably don’t even need to subject yourself to the video to get an idea of how egregious Miranda’s treatment of the chickens was. I mean, you know it had to be bad to secure a conviction for animal cruelty in rural North Carolina. The state ranks among the country’s top chicken producers; poultry farming there is big business.

Which is where the bad news comes in: Miranda may well be the last sadistic farmworker in North Carolina to be held accountable for his actions for a long time. Why? Because today, it wouldn’t be Miranda who would land in hot water but the undercover investigator who filmed him.

Owing to the very success of investigations such as the one that exposed Miranda, a number of Big Ag states have adopted so-called ag-gag laws, which subject whistle-blowers—not animal abusers—to stiff fines and even jail time. North Carolina’s own ag-gag law went into effect on Jan. 1, just days before Miranda was sentenced. If the video were released today, the folks at Mercy for Animals would be subjected to punishment to the tune of $5,000 in fines for each day they were found to be in violation of the law.

Thankfully, any number of animal welfare and environmental groups, as well as consumer rights organizations, haven’t been content to let these ridiculous laws stand. The Animal Legal Defense Fund persuaded a federal judge to strike down Idaho’s ag-gag law last summer, arguing that it violated the First Amendment. Just last week another federal judge, responding to a case brought by a coalition of groups, signaled that a similar law in Wyoming was also likely unconstitutional.

But animal welfare activists may be in for a long and difficult court fight to see all of these laws struck down. In the meantime, the group at the center of the North Carolina controversy has some simple advice: “Ultimately the best way to protect chickens and other farmed animals from needless cruelty and suffering is to leave meat, eggs, and dairy off your plate,” Mercy for Animals posted on its blog.
