Animal Friends Croatia Prepare Reports About the Benkovac Situation

6th June 2008 —-   Our buddies at ‘Animal Friends Croatia’ have been deeply involved with the animals locked into the Benkovac shelter recently.

Croatian authorities passed the Animal Protection Act for the protection and welfare of animals.  The suffering of the animals at the shelter in recent weeks which we have all witnessed shows a careless attitude by those who should be the very people with responsibility for enforcing this legislation.

The number of dogs in the Benkovac shelter has decreased considerably during the last few weeks from approximately 100 down to around 50 alive now.  Dogs died from malnutrition, lack of care, parasites and terrible hygienic conditions.  Cannibalism was a last resort by many of the animals due to the ignorance of the authorities to intervene and undertake what was necessary under the Animal Protection Act, the legislation passed by them ! – to provide basic care.

The news about Benkovac and Croatian shame spread like wildfire throughout the world.   Individuals, groups and organisations everywhere across the globe were constantly updated and provided with information and photographs of the shelter situation as the days went by.  The Mayor of Benkovac, the Director of the Veterinary station at Benkovac, and Benkovic d.o.o. (the town cleaning department) who are responsible for the shelter shamelessly attempted to blame others over the whole period for responsibility of the condition of dogs.  What ‘others’ are there to blame ?

Also, after the visit of representatives to the shelter, several top officials seemed more concerned about the media involvement in this case than the well-being of the animals in the shelter; a situation that did not appear to change according to reports.

So this week, things happened for the surviving animals at the shelter.  For a continuation and accurate story of events over the last few weeks, and the recent days events, please refer to the ‘Animal Friends Croatia’ links following:

http://www.animal-friends-croatia.org/index.en.php?id=946

http://www.prijatelji-zivotinja.hr/index.en.php?id=949

Below are more photographs showing the time when Animal Friends Croatia and the Press and Media gained access into the shelter.

Upon entry, one of the dogs especially was seen to be suffering from heat exhaustion.  So Dinko, the man who cared for the animals before he was sacked by the authorities and padlocked out of the shelter; which caused him much distress, was able to go back in to try and help all his animal friends.

Here you can see Dinko trying to help the Alsatian which is suffering from terrible heat stroke and exhaustion.

Dinko applies cooling water to the animal to try and save his life.

And thanks to Dinko’s efforts, the dog was taken out of the shelter, put on a drip, and it survived.

Dunja Reiter, a well known Croatian singer and actress living in Germany gave her support to the benkovac animals issue, and kindly participated in interviews with the press and media who went with Animal Friends Croatia to the shelter.

Here you can see both Dunja and Dinko discussing the situation.

More photographs and write ups to come very soon.

And the message to leave with the authorities is:

“Science may have found a cure for most evils,

but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all

– the apathy of human beings”.

New photographs on 23rd May are:

AND THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THIS IS:-

First photo – The Mayor;

Other photographs – the suffering his decisions have caused, including puppies being eaten by other starving dogs.
Is this the action of EU member states of the future ?
Mr. Mayor – your actions will keep Croatia OUT OF THE EU !!
The Law of Veterinary of the Republic of Croatia has now been checked.
SAV contacts now have a copy of the legislation.
In agreement with the Law of Veterinary of the Republic of Croatia:-
anti-rabies vaccinations must be provided for FREE – the same  as in Serbia – but, it is alleged that vets are asking for money to provide this.
Other people in Croatia have informed that vets everywhere are asking them for additional money to vaccinate, even though the vets receive money from the republics tax payers budget to pay for the vaccinations in the first place ! – and as such, the vaccinations should be provided free by the vets from the republics budget.

The situation in Croatia for anti-rabies vaccination should be the same as in Serbia – free  – and in agreement with the Law of Veterinary, because activists insisted on the implementation of this law.

Microchipping of stray dogs  must be provided from the municipality budget – also the same as in Serbia, because ‘communities’ are ‘owners’ of stray dogs – not any one specific person, not any specific organisation, but the communities – and that means all the citizens of the community – they are all owners of the stray dogs, and as such, the municipality budget must provide for their welfare.

Please see other news items on Benkovac for contact e mail information.
Dear all; please read the following which has just arrived, and also view more photographs at the tierhilfe-benkovac link given in the following text.

Here are the descriptions of the pictures: dogs are eating their new born puppies, most of them are severely injured, for some of them it was too late, and dogs have started to eat each other.

If you would like to help, please contact them

Thank you for your attention and help.

Love,

Miwa
