EU Citizens: Must be Done by 07/07/10 – Petition to Stop Illegal Timber and Save Wildlife – Please Sign Today

Dear friends around Europe,

Right now the European Parliament is deciding on legislation that would ban illegal timber, which

devastates forests and enriches organized crime. But certain MEPs from countries with large timber industries, are threatening to water-down the proposal. Sign the petition to ban imports of illegal timber and save our forests:

Within days, the European Parliament could ban illegal timber from entering the EU market — but powerful companies stand in the way.

Forests are the habitat and life source of many peoples and are essential in preventing climate change, but while there is high demand for timber, illegal logging thrives, killing species, and fuelling corruption and organized crime.
The European Council has just voted for harsh penalties and criminal sanctions for importers of timber harvested illegally in other countries. But now the Parliament has its say, and some MEPs from member states with large timber industries, are threatening to water down the crucial controls.

Let’s build a massive citizens’ outcry to get the European Parliament to end illegal timber imports and save our forests. The petition will be delivered to MEPS as they go into vote on the legislation on July 7th. We only have a few days! Sign the petition below and send it on to everyone:

Please – Sign the petition — then spread the word:

20-40% of the global timber market is estimated to be illegal. That’s roughly 10-15 Billion Euros a year which is stolen and funnelled to criminal syndicates. The US has already approved strong laws against illegal timber — but the EU is one of the world’s leading timber importers and as long as it does not ban the trade, it is directly responsible for around a 3 billion Euros share in this black market.

The social and environmental impacts of this industry are truly devastating and it is inciting money laundering, corruption and violence. Mismanaged deforestation drives global climate change and robs both indigenous peoples and animals, who rely on the forests, of crucial natural resources.

Last year the timber companies beat the ban, working with timber import countries to delay European legislation. But this year the Parliament has the chance to approve even stronger laws and some sectors of the timber industry as well as the Netherlands, UK, Denmark, Belgium and Spain have come out in favour of an outright ban.

Let’s not let the companies which fuel misery and destruction win again.

Together, we can tackle illegal logging and protect our forests and their peoples.

Please – Sign the petition — then spread the word:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/eu_stop_illegal_timber/?vl

Forests are a vital resource and our first line of defence on climate change, but they are being destroyed across the planet. When the EU imports this timber we become accomplices to the devastation and environmental crime that criminal networks inflict. Let’s tell our leaders it’s time to stop.

EU Citizens – A Call for Immediate Action for Animals – Must be Done In the Next Week

We ask campaigners across EU nations to please act immediately and contact your MEP’s with regard the following.  This needs to be acted on within the next week as time is short.

It concerns the Written declaration on the welfare of pets 0026/2010, a document which will be used to try and convince the European Union to use their powers of influence concerning a clear written policy concerning the welfare of animals.

Only when 50% of ALL MEP’s from the entire EU put their name to this declaration does it have a chance of moving forward to the agenda stage.

The following link gives national information on all current MEP’s within any EU member state.  To find yours simply click on your country of residence and go from there.

http://www.europarl.europa.eu/members/public/geoSearch.do?language=en

MEP’s for all regions of that (each) country are then listed – divided into the region of the country which they represent. Click on your region and you will then be provided with a listing of MEP’s for your region.  Then click on each MEP by name to find their direct e mail contact details.

English and German sample letters are provided below, as well as a copy of the declaration (in several languages – simply scroll down).

vertaling%20engels[1]

Bescherming pets

brief_europarlement[1].doc-duitse%20vertaling[1]

We ask anyone please who represents an animal welfare organization especially to please put their organizations name at the end of the letter.  Please ensure that you add your name to the sample letter and the region of (your) the country that you live in.

This is important for animals in Europe – please find time to take part.

370 MEP signatures are required by July, so time is short.

IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER:

Normally, MEP’s will only respond to requests by citizens from within the region of the country which they represent.  Therefore it is essential to attempt to get as many citizens from all regions across each country to contact their (regional) MEP’s.

ie. Northern German MEP’s will not normally respond to requests from Southern german citizens; but Southern german MEP’s should !

This is the same for any EU state – please only contact your REGIONAL MEP’s.

Thanks – SAV.

Fremantle council votes to end live sheep exports

  • From: PerthNow
  • May 27, 2010 7:18AM

FREMANTLE has adopted a policy aimed at putting an end to live sheep exports from the port.

A historic decision was made last night by the City of Fremantle to support a phase out of live exports.

More than 80 per cent of the nearly 4 million Australian sheep exported in 2006 were loaded through the port of Fremantle.

Fremantle Council has now joined Greens Member for South East Metropolitan, Lynn MacLaren, and Federal Labour Member for Fremantle, Melissa Parke, in opposing live exports on the grounds of cruelty.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the time had come for the “cruel and unnecessary live sheep trade to be phased out and replaced with a trade that supports local jobs”.

“This motion is not designed to move the trade south from Fremantle to Kwinana. We want it stopped all together and replaced with the less cruel and better economic outcome of frozen meat,” Mr Pettitt said.

Stop Live Exports campaign manager Jodie Jankevics said: “We welcome Fremantle Council taking this strong stance against live exports. There are many animal welfare concerns with this trade, and despite industry claims, very little improvements to animal welfare have been made.

“Not only are live exports cruel, but they don’t make economic sense either.

“Recent reports released show that a sheep processed domestically is worth 20 per cent more to the Australian economy than one exported live, due to the capacity to value add in Australia.

“Added to that, many West Australians are losing their jobs in the processing sector. Live export are sending animals overseas that would normally be processed here.”

Australia: Please Support (see below) – The City of Fremantle has Called for Live Animal Exports to be Phased Out During the Next Five Years.

Live animal exports are an issue which I feel incredibly strongly about.  It is my No.1 campaign issue which continues in parallel with the work I undertake for SAV.

I have been part of the Uk activist / investigation / monitoring system aginst live animal exports from the Uk for over 20 years now.  The number of calves, sheep, pigs and horses that I have seen on the road and at Uk ports, ready for export, now runs into the millions, literally.

Over the last year, Uk activists have finally achieved what has only ever been a dream – to completely stop the export of ALL live animals from the Uk to mainland Europe; animals which have always gone for slaughter and further fattening.

It is a massive achievement and I am proud to have played a part.  As the EU Correspondent for an anti live export organisation here in the Uk, our submissions to the EU on our investigation work has played a key role in getting us to where we are now.  There are some great investigators and groups in mainland Europe who are continuing to highlight the abuse suffered by animals undergoing long distance transportation:

http://www.animals-angels.de/startseite,en_ORG.html

http://www.pmaf.org/

I very much wish every one of them every success in the work they undertake.

Finally, I ask everyone to please give your support to the campaign below.  The City of Freemantle in Australia has called for live animal exports to be phased out in the next five years.

Please watch the video footage of Australian sheep exports to the Middle East and then tell me I am wrong when I say that such animals should never be exported live from Australia.   –    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXV65Jvqjgk

Most importantly, please send the sample letter to the authorities of Freemantle, giving them your support in their call that live animal exports from the city should be stopped.

There are also several petitions given below; please sign them.

When you either see, hear or smell live animal exports, you want to get them stopped.  When you witness all together, you rage and the want becomes and obsession.  The right obsession; to free animals from cruelty and abuse when travelling to their deaths.

Here are a few links to some of the action we have taken in the Uk against the trade over the years.  Action which has now reaped rewards 100%.  There are NO live animal exports from Uk shores.

Please take action for the millions of Australian animals which still endure the most cruellest of cruelty in a trade / business which is not necessary.

SAMPLE LETTER (modified version of the letter provided here: http://ataac.org/content/view/13/32/):

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you regarding the live export of millions of Australian animals for slaughter.

These animals endure long and gruelling road and sea journeys which many do not survive. In the sheep export trade to the Middle East, tens of thousands of sheep die on the way every year.

Despite industry claims to the contrary, the barbaric handling and slaughter of Australian animals on arrival in countries with little or no animal protection legislation is widespread and ongoing.

As a nation with high animal welfare standards, Australian animals deserve better.

I am glad the City of Fremantle has called for live animal exports to be phased out in the next five years and would like to give my full support. It’s time to end this cruel and unnecessary trade and replace it with a trade in chilled and frozen meat from animals humanely transported and slaughtered in Australia.

Yours sincerely,
[Name, Country]
