Target: Sally Jewell, Secretary of the Interior

Goal: Prevent slaughter of rare mountain lions in the western U.S.

In the past decade, thousands of rare mountain lions have been killed by trophy hunters, according to a report by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona are listed as the states with the highest number of mountain lions slaughtered for sport in the past decade. In Arizona alone, nearly 2,900 of these big cats were killed. That number only increases in the other four states. According to HSUS, these states do a poor job of properly monitoring their mountain lion population, frequently allow multiple killings and do not have season limits.

Trophy hunters prize these big cats as mounted displays or rugs. They often use packs of dogs wearing radio collars to corner the big cats and make for an easy kill shot. The mountain lion is a rare and beautiful animal, making it a target for trophy hunters and in need of our protection.

Demand legal protections are implemented to prevent this slaughter.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Jewell,

Mountain lions in the western U.S. are being slaughtered by trophy hunters at an alarming rate. According to a Humane Society of the United States report that collected data for the past decade, nearly 2,900 of these magnificent animals were killed in Arizona alone. Ahead of Arizona in the top five are Utah, Colorado, Montana and Idaho, each with increasingly higher numbers of mountain lions killed for sport. According the HSUS report, these states do a poor job of properly monitoring the mountain lion population and do not impose hunting limits.

Trophy hunters seek mountain lions for decorative purposes, but these cats occupy a critical place in the food chain and must be preserved from extinction.

We demand legal measures are taken to protect these beautiful big cats from slaughter by trophy hunters.

Sincerely,

Stop China’s Out-of-Control Spread of GMO-Contaminated Seeds

Target: Chinese President Xi Jinping

Goal: Stop the rampant spread of GMO contamination in the food supply.

Chinese farmers are illegally growing unprecedented amounts of genetically modified corn. Reports show that 93 percent of samples taken last year from corn fields in five counties in Liaoning province tested positive for GMO contamination. In addition, almost 100 percent of samples of seeds that were taken from markets, as well as samples of corn-based foods, also tested positive for GMO contamination.

China has spent billions of dollars to develop GMO crops and may be losing control over them.

This is dangerous because the government will not be able to control the food supply, which is distributed across the globe. If this continues, most of the food supply will be made up of GMO-contaminated food and many farmers may not even know they are being sold GMO-contaminated seeds.

The government must take an active role in combating this environmental health disaster by investigating corn breeding companies and destroying these illegal GMO seeds, to protect both farmers and the international public. Urge China to step up and stop the spread of GMO-contaminated seeds.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Xi Jinping,

Chinese farmers are illegally growing genetically modified corn and may not even know it, thanks to your government’s lack of supervision and regulation of corn breeding companies like Monsanto. These illegal GMO seeds have spread to a majority of the food supply in certain areas of China, and this is creating a potential environmental and health nightmare.

I urge you to take a stand against this brewing disaster by investigating corn breeding companies and destroying these illegal GMO seeds.

Sincerely,

China: Over 6,000 Skin And Bone Tigers Dying In Tiger Farms – Close These Hell Holes Down – Please Sigh The Petition.

petition 3

Petition Link – https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/NPC_Standing_Committee_The_Peoples_Republic_of_China_End_Tiger_Farming_Now/?pv=19

Behind rusted bars, a skeletal tiger lies panting on the filthy concrete floor of his cage, covered in painful sores and weeping wounds. His once-powerful body is now so emaciated it is little more than a pitiful pile of fur and bones. In row after row of foul, cramped cages, 1,500 other tigers also lie alone, crippled and dying of starvation. One is hunched up against the side of her cage, her neck grotesquely deformed. Another, blinded in one eye, lies motionless. Others are kept locked in small, concrete enclosures, spending their days in perpetual darkness. They occasionally jump up on their hind legs to peer through the narrow slit windows, desperately seeking a rare glimpse of daylight.

When death finally comes, the dead tigers are taken to a massive subterranean factory. Here, they are stripped of their valuable skin and flesh and have their bones join the hundreds of tiger skeletons boiling in huge wine vats. This is the Xiongshen Tiger and Bear Mountain Village – the largest collection of endangered tigers in the world.

Throughout China, it is estimated that at least 6,000 tigers – twice the amount existing in the wild – are suffering and dying in horrific “tiger farms” like Xiongshen. These vile businesses, run by a handful of wealthy and powerful men, breed and slaughter thousands of tigers in concentration camp-like conditions – all so that their owners can make millions by selling tiger parts under legal permit from China’s State Forestry Administration. China’s legal tiger trade is in violation of CITES agreements and has single-handedly undermined millions of dollars in conservation efforts.

china tiger

Ever since the first tiger farms were established in the late 1980s, demand for tiger products has greatly increased, and, with it, tiger poaching. It is still cheaper to kill a wild tiger than to raise a captive one, so tiger farms frequently abuse the permit system and launder illegally-poached tigers as captive specimens for greater profits. The result is that, every single day, at least one more wild tiger is killed to fuel China’s demand for parts. If this continues, the tiger will be extinct in the wild in just 20 years.

But the tiger farm owners don’t care. In fact, many of them are literally banking on extinction, accumulating stockpiles of carcasses as a bloody “investment” which they hope will increase in value once the tiger is gone forever.

This evil industry has its roots in a single, outdated law. Under China’s 1989 Law on the Protection of Wildlife, wildlife is merely a resource for human use. The law encourages the breeding of tigers, bears, and other wildlife for commercial purposes, set up the frequently-abused permit system for selling wildlife parts, and affords captive animals no legal protection from abuse and neglect. Fortunately, attitudes in China are quickly changing – and the law is about to follow.

As the cries for change become stronger, Chinese lawmakers are finally revising the Law on the Protection of Wildlife. This single law has the potential to shut down the tiger farms, end China’s wildlife trade, and turn the nation into a global leader in wildlife conservation.

The National People’s Congress Standing Committee, China’s legislative body, plans on considering a new draft of the law by the end of this year. So far, things appear to be moving in the right direction. Insiders claim that the current draft discourages wildlife trade and promotes animal welfare, something which would have been unprecedented just 5 years ago.

But there is no room for complacency. The current regulator for wildlife breeding is largely pro-trade, and the multimillion dollar, politically-connected tiger farming industry has a strong lobby force. They will be doing everything in their power to ensure that their evil business continues – and that the tiger goes extinct.

The good news is that China values its international reputation above all else, meaning that a massive global outcry will encourage lawmakers to do the right thing and put an end to the tiger trade once and for all. If they do, conservationists say that it would be “the single biggest contribution to securing a future for wild tigers.”

The decision that China makes within the next year could mean the difference between extinction and survival for the wild tiger. Until then, it is up to every conscientious citizen to urge them to do the right thing.

Together, we can put the dark stain of tiger farming in the past, and create a future where the greatest of the great cats is free to be wild.

Petition Wording:

As global citizens concerned about animal welfare and the future of the critically-endangered Tiger, we respectfully urge you to ensure that any revision of China’s Law on the Protections of Wildlife will institute an immediate ban on the breeding of tigers or other protected wildlife for commercial purposes; create a zero-tolerance policy for any trade in products derived from tigers, regardless of origin; mandate the destruction of all existing stockpiles of tiger parts; and ensure that violators are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

A bear sits alone in a pit in the utterly depressing Kaliningrad zoo for many years. The environment is not appropriate to the species it consists only of concrete. I fight for a couple months to find a organisation to help the bear out of this bad conditions. Nobody want to help me. I think the problem is that the bear is in Russia. Its not so easy to help him, but I never give up.

Unfortunately, the bear can not be reintroduced he is too long in captivity, but I hope I can find a sanctuary for him.

Please help me, please sign the petition. If enough people sign we can help the bear to start a new live in good conditions. The petition is aimed at ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), HSI (Human Society International) and Four Paws International Vienna. Please help sign and share the petition.

Thank s to Jane for sending this.

LATEST NEWS –

hammer-800p-header

Dear Mark,

Together, we just won a big victory for sharks and rays!

On Monday, Costa Rica officially announced it would support the listing of all proposed shark and ray species at an important international conservation meeting being held in Costa Rica later this month.

I personally want to thank every one of you that signed our petition asking Costa Rica to take a strong position. Our almost 5,000 voices united together helped make a difference.

The announcement came after the Ministry of Environment sided with us and not with the Costa Rican Fisheries Institute who vehemently oppose shark protections.

Read more about the victory here.

2016 is going to be a pivotal year for the protection of sharks leading up to the CITES meeting in South Africa in the fall where critical decisions will be made.

Thank you for helping protect the sharks!

Peter Fugazzotto
Strategic Programs Director
Turtle Island Restoration Network

PS – Even though Costa Rica will be supporting the listings, a number of other countries will need to vote in favor at the meeting this month. Please make a donation today so we can advocate on behalf of sharks and rays in the upcoming days.

Punish Billionaire for Destroying Coral Reef With Megayacht

Petition 2

https://forcechange.com/151904/punish-billionaire-for-destroying-coral-reef-with-megayacht/?utm_source=ForceChange+Newsletter&utm_campaign=83ca53e73d-606FC2_1_2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_600a6911b9-83ca53e73d-278817597

Target: Cayman Islands Department of Environment Director Gina Ebanks-Petrie

Goal: Ensure man whose megayacht chain allegedly damaged most of a coral reef is properly punished for his negligence.

Billionaire Paul Allen is reportedly responsible for the destruction of a coral reef due to the fact that he anchored his ridiculously massive yacht in the middle of it.

The huge chain wrecked havoc upon the Cayman Islands reef, damaging around 80 percent of it. Almost 14,000 square feet of it was entirely destroyed, leaving untold numbers of marine organisms without food and shelter.

Paul Allen is the co-founder of Microsoft, and as such he is incredibly wealthy. His yacht is the 49th largest in the world according to Boat International. Something this massive was bound to disrupt the ocean, but this destruction of such an important aspect of the marine ecosystem is completely unacceptable.

Allen is blaming the local port authority for the destruction of this reef, but his completely unnecessary yacht never should have been near the coral reef in the first place. Due to the fact that he has so much money, it’s possible that the authorities may be reluctant to try and prosecute him for this destruction. We cannot allow that to happen as it will send the message that billionaires can get away with anything.

Coral reefs cannot be repaired once destroyed. However, justice can be done and things like this can be prevented. Sign our petition to demand that Paul Allen be punished for damaging this coral reef.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Ebanks-Petrie,

Recently, 80 percent of the West Bay coral reef was reportedly damaged by the anchor chain of Paul Allen’s massive megayacht. This is an incredible amount of destruction, as I’m sure you know, and will have a devastating effect on the marine ecosystem in the area. All of this is because of the greed of a rich man who apparently thinks that he can get away with anything.

This coral reef lies in a protected area and its destruction warrants much more than a simple fine that wouldn’t put a dent in his huge fortune. This is also not the first time that billionaire yachts have come along to damage these fragile habitats.

We can’t let this man get away with effectively destroying this coral reef and leaving untold numbers of marine animals without their home. Please do not let him off easy, as nothing can bring back a coral reef like this which took hundreds of years to develop. Ensure that your government presses charges against Paul Allen and makes him pay for his greedy negligence.

Sincerely,
