Irish Calf Exports – from Jane.

There is still no confirmation from Stena that they have sourced a suitable replacement vessel to carry the Rosslare to Cherbourg calf trade.
The ICMSA’s chairperson is getting very irate about the situation – 22/01/18 :-
An immediate announcement on the state of Ireland’s live calf export facilities has been called for by the chairperson of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association’s (ICMSA’s) Livestock Committee Des Morrisson.
” It is absolutely essential that a replacement shipping facility is secured and confirmed as soon as possible, as the Stena Horizon goes into dry dock for maintenance for a number of weeks during the calving season, Morrisson explained.”
Commenting on the matter, he said: “There will be over 1.5 million calves born between now and the end of May and it absolutely essential that the shipping issue is resolved – and that an announcement is made publicly.
We have to know that we have the means and capacity to get our calves to the buyers and markets waiting for them.”
“The ICMSA acknowledges the efforts made by both the industry and department on this matter; but, we want to know that the shipping issue has been resolved – because, that’s hugely important in terms of setting a floor price for calves this spring.”
“There is a strong demand for our calves in the EU and there can’t be any questions or doubts about access to this market on the very cusp of this critical three-month period.”
Previously, a spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine confirmed that the department was in “active and ongoing discussions with shipping companies in relation to possible alternative options for carrying livestock trucks” during the period when the Stena Horizon will be unavailable.
“As these involve commercial decisions on behalf of the companies involved, it is not appropriate for the department to comment further at this time,” the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Stena Line also previously explained that it has chartered a vessel as a temporary replacement ship for the Stena Horizon. But, fulfilling the necessary requirements to gain permission to carry live export trucks on the crossing has proved difficult.
Concluding, it added that it was working hard at the time to find a suitable solution.

The roro ferry Arrow was previously named as being a prospective replacement if it passed. But at the moment she appears to be sailing between Lerwick and Aberdeen and nowhere near Rosslare ! If Arrow is not suitable hope they come up with something very soon and don’t think of land bridges and the Joline. This would be costly and they have already abandoned the idea of flying calves from Shannon as too expensive.

UK – Breaking news: Bowood slaughterhouse workers plead guilty to animal cruelty offences!
In late 2014, Animal Aid placed fly-on-the-wall cameras inside Bowood Yorkshire Lamb abattoir in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. Our cameras found horrific, illegal abuse of animals.
Three slaughtermen and one former company Director have now pleaded guilty to animal cruelty offences. The charge against a fifth defendant was dropped.
Whilst sentencing has been adjourned until March, we are very pleased that justice will finally be done.
Bowood is one of fourteen slaughterhouses that Animal Aid has investigated since 2009. We have placed hidden cameras in slaughterhouses that claim to be ‘high welfare’, as well as conventional and non-stun. In almost all we found evidence of law-breaking. This included incidents of deliberate animal cruelty, such as men stubbing cigarettes out on pigs’ faces, animals having their throats hacked whilst fully conscious, stunning tools being used to torture animals, animals being thrown, and more.

USA – Idaho Will Ask For More Taxpayers Money To Kill Wolves – Take Action.

On January 25th, the Idaho Wolf Control Board will be asking the state legislature for even more money from taxpayers to fund their killing of wolves.
During the first three years of the Wolf Control Board’s lethal removal program, over $1.2 million in taxpayer money was used for the sole purpose of killing wolves.
Mark, in that time 177 wolves have been killed. Despite the tragic loss of life, there has been no reduction in livestock losses – the reason the control board was developed! This careless killing of wolves has to stop now!
It’s a proven fact: Wolves and people CAN share the landscape. Nonlethal coexistence measures pioneered by Defenders across the American West – like using livestock guard dogs, range riders and wolf-deterrent fencing – are not only more cost effective, they’re better at keeping animals out of harm’s way.
Idaho’s wolves have been in mortal danger since Congress stripped them of federal protection in 2011. Since Idaho took over their management, the number of breeding pairs has plummeted and nearly 2,000 wolves have been killed – more than any other state in the Lower 48.
Defenders is the only national organization with staff on the ground in Idaho who not only helped restore wolves in the 1990s but are still actively working against such harmful programs at the statehouse and with the state wildlife commission.

Every two weeks in the Mexican state of Yucatan, a gruesome festival known as Torneo de Lazo takes place, in which innocent horses are mauled by bulls. “Cowboys” ride the terrified horses around while bulls trained to attack charge at them and rip up their flesh with their horns. The bulls suffer too as the “cowboys” try to lasso them down.

Migrating pilot whales who are unfortunate enough to swim past the Faroe Islands are pushed to shore by fishermen, where they are then speared and slaughtered. Oftentimes their meat is left on the bloody shore to rot. Sign the petition to stop this barbaric whale slaughter.

Goldie the wolf is a mother of four beautiful cubs. And she has been sentenced to death.
Goldie is an amazing and beautiful creature who has lived in the area near Goldenstedt, Germany for years. Two years ago, she met her partner after he traveled more than 400 km from an area near Poland to establish a family with her. Last year, they had four beautiful cubs and started a pack. But now Goldie and her family are in danger.
The city council of Goldenstedt has unanimously adopted a resolution to immediately kill the entire pack. Why? Because locals want to protect their cattle and can’t be bothered to simply make their fences and livestock pens wolf-resistant.

We still remember the horrible Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

As you may know, the Trump Administration has recently proposed further opening federal waters to oil and gas drilling. An expansion of oil drilling in our oceans will be a severe blow to decades-long efforts to protect endangered and threatened sea turtles and other marine wildlife.

You’ve helped us shine a light on ExxonMobil’s funding of anti-climate lobbying groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and the message is getting through. When ALEC drafted a resolution last month calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to withdraw its science-based finding that global warming emissions are endangering the planet, Exxon opposed the resolution, distancing itself publicly from ALEC’s anti-climate stance. The resolution was eventually dropped.
Days later, in response to a shareholder-approved resolution that called on the company to report on how it is aligning its business with global climate action, ExxonMobil announced that its board will provide shareholders details on climate change risks and impacts to its business.
Unfortunately, ExxonMobil’s announcement to disclose climate risks is short on details. ExxonMobil should develop a business plan that takes climate science and the risks of fossil fuel investment seriously. And, while ExxonMobil called out ALEC on this instance of climate science disinformation, the company continues to fund them—despite ALEC’s track record of climate change denial. Additionally, just this week, ExxonMobil took the first steps toward suing state and local governments who are moving to hold energy companies accountable for the impacts of climate change.
ExxonMobil needs to know that we’re still watching, and that lip service isn’t enough.
One critical first step is to follow through on its promise to provide details on how climate change will impact its business.

The pictures that PETA published from this pig farm in Günthersdorf (Friedland) are no exception – it is the rule in the German pig farms.
In August 2017, PETA filed a complaint with the competent public prosecutor’s office in Frankfurt (Oder) for violating the Animal Welfare Act.
For many serious violations of the Livestock Farming Ordinance.
In addition, the veterinary office of the Oder-Spree district was informed about the abuses.
But the catastrophic conditions were not turned off.

As we see in Video, (and here, nobody needs translation) the pigs have to live in their own excrement in this farm. Coughing animals were documented because of the ammonia.
Also, tumors, eye infections, injured limbs were documented. Many pigs are bitten and bloodied from other pigs on the tips of their ears, because these intelligent and clean animals permanently suffer from boredom, stress and catastrophic living conditions.
Finally, if the costs in the farm are higher than the “economic value” of the animal, it is not uncommon to kill – legally and illegally. Also in this operation (video) dying and already dead animals were documented.
They will end up in the garbage – after a painful life.
PETA has already documented and published massive animal protection violations in this pig farm in Günthersdorf, Brandenburg.
But nothing has been done by either the policy or the veterinary office.
The pig farm belongs to the farmer AG Neißetal, which was subsidized by the EU in 2016 for more than 888,000 Euros,
– among other things for their livestock husbandry!!!

Dear Prime Minister,
PETA was again able to publish the massive animal suffering in a Brandenburg pig farm.
This case clearly shows that the problem lies in the system.
Sensitive and intelligent creatures are adapted to a construct that pursues purely economic interests.
The pictures illustrate how animals will be handled in 2017: ailing, heavily stalled animal houses and dirty feed and water troughs. Sick and dying pigs can be seen, also dead and injured animals can be found in the inventory. Bloody ear tips and completely gnawed ticks are only an indication of the psychological and physical stress the animals have to endure.
It is well known how clean and intelligent pigs are, which is why they cannot be kept close to species in the withered and barren bays. In addition, they often make the hard-slatted floors and the air, which is usually contaminated with ammonia, sick.
Controls seem to fail once again – or are such conditions in Brandenburg of economic interest wanted?
I therefore urge you to end the suffering of the pigs in this farm and to take measures so that the torments of all pigs in Brandenburg come to an end.

We need your help.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is once again putting corporate interests ahead of animal welfare and consumer rights.
In December, the USDA announced plans to scrap the Organic Animal Rule requiring organic farmers to raise their animals more humanely than animals on factory farms. The agency seems determined to ignore the fact that tens of thousands of you spoke up over many years in support of the new rule.
As required by law, USDA has opened one last comment period before it intends to pull the plug for good.
We only have until January 17 to tell it that this decision is irresponsible and unacceptable.
Most people assume that “USDA Organic” farm animals spend time outdoors, with the sun on their backs and grass beneath them. But in reality, the Organic program has only a handful of poorly defined, completely inadequate animal care standards.
Some large-scale “organic” farms take advantage of this and keep animals crammed indoors. The Organic Animal Rule would finally define outdoor access and provide other basic protections for farm animals so all organic farms would be required to give their animals better lives.
If the USDA succeeds in killing this rule, it would put the 100 million animals raised on organic farms each year in danger and prioritize the profits of a few companies at the expense of consumers, who expect better when they pay a premium for Organic products.
We have just over one week left to fight back, so please take action before it’s too late.
If you believe farm animals deserve to be treated humanely, please visit ASPCA.org to quickly and easily submit a comment to the USDA demanding the Organic Rule be implemented as promised.

SAV Comment – If she thinks a free vote on killing wildlife is going to get her re-elected; then she should think again. Over 80% of the British public support the continuation of the hunting ban. Note she says a ‘clear message’ has been sent from the public. And many of those want to see the ban strengthened. Is Mrs May showing signs for once of listening to the public ?
Theresa May has dropped a manifesto pledge to hold a vote on the fox-hunting ban during this parliament.
The Tories had promised a vote on repealing the Hunting Act – which bans the use of dogs to hunt foxes and wild mammals in England and Wales – during the 2017 general election campaign.
But the prime minister told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show there was a “clear message” against it from the public.
“I think there was a clear message about that and that’s why I say there won’t be a vote on fox-hunting during this parliament.”
Labour said the move was “long overdue” and called on ministers to take tough action against those who continue to conduct illegal fox hunts.
The League Against Cruel Sports said hunting was a “barbaric” practice “which still sees British wildlife being torn to pieces by packs of hounds”.
“It appears that the government now accepts that cruel sports should no longer be a part of 21st Century society so it’s good to know they won’t try to legalise it again in this Parliament, though they may try again in the next,” said spokesman Chris Pitt.
The group also called for stronger action against illegal hunting which it said was being carried out in the name of “trail hunting”.
Mrs May’s predecessor, David Cameron, (Below), had promised a free vote on whether to repeal the ban in England and Wales when he was in power, but it never materialised.
