Serbia / Italy: The Links Between Hunting Endangered (EU Red List) Birds.

Serbian FlagItaly

Here following is lots of info from Vesna regarding the hunting of Turtle Doves and Quail.  Lots of it is taken by Italian hunters who go into Serbia and then sell the hunted product back to Italian restaurants.  There is little action by the Serbian authorities to prevent it, despite EU restrictions; EU Red Lists on hunted species and huge financial support for Serbia from the EU.

We were asked to do an English version of this data from Vesna but we feel that very little needs to be changed – and also there is a lot to review and amend.  So we are publishing the full data from Vesna.

Extra info on same subject  – Link this in to our recent post on the same subject which can be viewed at  https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2015/08/03/eu-serbia-mass-animal-and-bird-killings-exports-to-the-eu-despite-eu-bans-yet-the-eu-enlargement-commission-does-very-little-despite-the-1-5-billion-euros-given-to-serbia-pre-eu-accession/

Serb hunt 1

Dear all,

The situation in the whole of Serbia the same, no difference from north to south.

Money that Serbia received from the EU through the IPA funds, EUR 203 million, alone in 2013.  is not known where was spent because the situation in Serbia has not changed much since 2013. And still the executive power does not respect and does not apply the applicable law and not EU legislation in the field of nature, although the domestic Law on Nature Protection registered Article,  to EU legislation has applied in domestic legislation. But this does not apply.

The latest debacle shows that the executive and legislative power have the greatest impact profiteers and tycoons, is passing amendments to the Regulations on closed hunting  season.

In this case, it is for one month, from 28 June 2015 to 29 July 2015 changed 3 times. To the end it turned out that despite the ban handed down turtle dove hunting, can be hunted, and this year, which is a kind of degraded Regulations, turtle dove Streptopelia turtur, which is located on the European Red list of endangered species will be killed this year in Serbia. This was done for the profiteers in the field of hunting, which have ravaged the fauna of Serbia.

serb hunt 2
In addition, the EU has long been banned all exports of meat of game from Serbia to the EU. (Council Regulalation  No. 338/97 of 9.December 1996 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora by regulating trade therein) .

In the hunt for turtle doves and quail comes a lot of Italians who will defiance smuggle the corpses of birds in Italy.  One killed the turtle dove here costs 2.5 Euros, and the moment  arrive in Italy, Minimum cost  is 25 Euros, the resale for restaurants, the price reaches over 50 Euros per bird. The same applies to quail, which the European Red List has the status of sparse species.

Quail and turtle doves are species of international importance and in the majority of European countries hunting both species is prohibited.

In Serbia hunt both species begins 01.08. and lasts until 30.09. and that the playing time, ie. raising cubs in August, and September is the time of peak migration of birds from northern Europe, where they are fully protected from hunting. For Serbia fields falling exhausted from a grueling migration, to rest, feed and water, and then in moments of greatest exhaustion flocks, gathering hunters and kills everybody. None flock that was discovered by hunters, occurred on the territory of Serbia, no longer flew.

So protection pursued by the Northern European countries and the money spent in conservation, here, on the territory of Serbia, everything is cancelled, the mass killing of birds in migration.
I forgot to mention that over Serbia, from north to south migratory corridor for Africa, and for birds migrating in Central Asia.

**  In short, Serbia does not respect and do not apply the EU Directive on the conservation of wild birds in 2009 (Directive 2009/147 / EC, 30th November 2009)As Bern and the Bonn Convention on the conservation of wild fauna and its habitats.  **

Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of quail would not even discuss a turtle dove protect it for 1 month during the closed season or during the hunt is this decision reversed and allow hunting.

Today, 01.08. he began to hunt for turtle doves and quails, with a strong zeal of hunters, they are angry and want to kill as height can, I have no doubt that will happen. This is due to what was first hunting was banned, which led them to anger, and then a few days before the start of hunting, hunting is allowed, and now they will carry out revenge against the poor birds.

In short, the authorities in Serbia wants money from the EU but will not respect its own laws and even less EU legislation. Stakeholders and profiteers continue to tailor policies and legislation in Serbia and it is not, the debacle of turtle doves clearly visible for us.

serb hunt 3

Authorities in Serbia know that exports of meat of wild animals is prohibited in the EU and know that they will be smuggling corpses of birds in the EU, but do nothing to prevent it, but to make all help to carry out smuggling.

In short, we in Serbia, we can to deal with everything, what is written and Slavica, we need the help of the EU, which is funded and supported by our government.

If, and this can help to improve the text, asylums and abandoned animals is not the only problem, **  no local government does not apply the Law on Veterinary and Animal Welfare Act.  **

I apologize for the bad English, with the help of Google translator and dictionary. I hope you’ll understand.

P.S. Oral vaccination of wild animals is carried out, provided the information and photographs from some areas in Serbia, where people find a vaccine and photographed, the last thing I received photos of the vaccine in reserve Great Bustards/ North Serbia.

There is no longer a local declaration of rabies as earlier worked to hunters killing cats and dogs in the streets or at the periphery of the village.  As well as the massacres of foxes in nature, which they consider to vermin. We still have no evidence that vaccination conducted regularly throughout the territory of Serbia.

Kind Regards – Vesna

———————–

I’m glad you understand this.

This shame of our Ministry and Government who could not protect the turtle dove, to even a month after that, made a different decision and allow hunting on them, and knowing that he is on the Red List, and that is a migratory species, speaks of undue influence on executive power . The Minister can not change policies or laws passed by the Assembly of Serbia.

Especially considering that the hunting lobby has too much influence on executive power, and according to their needs, quail was not even a topic, nor the disaster that befell the whole of Serbia, the Law on wildlife and hunting, is explicitly prohibited hunting. Hunting is started from 01.08. as if nothing is happening.

It all speaks to us about the abuse of power, laziness competent state authorities, who do not do anything, and delay as much as possible, that the hunt is over.

From 01.09. begins hunting of waterfowl which are also very vulnerable due to the disappearance of water mirrors and lack of food, even if daytime temperatures fall, no rain and will need a lot of rain to recover nature and it is the habitat of wild species.

Because of this, our government must make yourself and respect our laws and international treaties, directives on the protection of wild fauna.

About all this, we have to write to the European Commission, the department for the protection of nature and biodiversity, and for that we need excellent English translation.

Mark is our long-time friend, he understands everything we write and understand fully the situation in Serbia.

Also, aid from Germany would be excellent, our government reps in Germany has good friends and the politicians who support them, they should warn them that this is what they are doing is not acceptable to the EU community.

Also, aid from Germany would be excellent, our government in Germany has good friends and the politicians who support them, they should warn them that this is what they are doing is not acceptable to the EU community.

This embarrassment about 3 amending the Regulations on closed hunting season, for the purposes of hunting organizations and lobbyists, must be heard and must be known. This is not and can not be done.

Regards.
Vesna

——————————–

In Italy, the hunt begins the last week of September, and by then most of the birds went to migrate. Now, no hunting in Italy.

In Serbia, the benefits of Italian hunters have hunting agency and hunting associations and lobbyists, nobody else.

In Italy, the hunting is strictly controlled and very expensive, rigorous penalties, and most parts of Italy is prohibited for hunting.

In Serbia, all the cons. Voracious Italians coming to Serbia and kill all of them. Like most other birds, larks and pipits, which are prohibited for hunting, but who cares?

2012 we had an charge for two Italians who have made a massacre Pipit, sparrows and other small songbirds, for a couple of hours of the morning hunting, they killed 89 birds.

We have somewhere these pictures.

TURKEY!!

We demand INVESTIGATION for 300 dogs that have been destroyed by the Municipality of Uşak.

In Civril that is 59 km away from the Usak city, the police officers were suspicious about a parked truck trailer and requested to look inside the trailer to investigate.

There were about 300 dogs loaded in the trailer and around 50 dogs were already dead.

turkey dead dogs

The driver testified that the transportion company he worked for, has had a contract with the Municipality of Usak to transport the dogs to Civril.

The Police informed Can Güllübas who is responsible of the shelter at Civril.

Can Güllübaş arrived, unloaded all the dogs and reloaded the live dogs back on the trailer to be sent back to Uşak. The police have released the driver and the truck trailer to take the dogs back to the shelter in Uşak under terrible conditions.

Since then, the driver and the trailer loaded with dogs can not be found.

Animal welfare society in Usak had previously reported that they were very surprised to see so few dogs in the shelter located at Usak and according to their statement, the dogs were originally loaded on this trailer by the people working at the shelter in Usak.

Serbia / EU: Differences In Animal Slaughter Standards – Another Serious Case Of Serbia Not Meeting EU Standards – Yet It Wants To Join !!

Serbian FlagEUUN0001

eu slaughtehose 1

Above – EU.

We have uncovered this link (below) today as part of our investigation work producing the reports for the EU which are described in previous posts.  It is rather graphic but is also a clear indicator of the things that need to be done, – improvements; especially as Serbia is hoping to gain EU membership in the relatively near future.

slaughter 5

slaughter 6

Above:  Serbia.

Here is the link to some of the standards in Serbia – WARNING – Graphic Footage:

https://annetteandbjorn.wordpress.com/serbian-events/bacina-slaughter/

In  EU nations, when an animal carcass has been slaughtered and prepared at a slaughterhouse, it is then ‘approved’, a slaughterhouse employee marks it with an EU health symbol to prove that the meat is safe for human consumption.  We doubt that this is happening at the Serbian facility shown.  Is the carcass fit for human consumption ? – just look at the outside floor conditions at which this sheep was killed.

slaughter 7

Above: Serbia.

Below: EU.

slaughter 3Pig carcasses

As non meat eaters we do not like doing things about slaughterhouses; but we feel that is a necessity here especially as we are currently working on reports of animal welfare standards within Serbia.  Compare the EU slaughterhouse conditions with those in the link re Serbia.  There is no real comparison; and once again this shows where Serbia has to step up to the plate to put its animal welfare house in order.  When Serbia joins the EU; it will have to have slaughterhouses of the types shown in the photographs for the EU – what is shown in the above link (Serbian standards) will not be acceptable to the standards of EU nations.  Serbia will have to comply.

The thing we found really disturbing on the link photographs is the fact that in several shots, you can see several bottles of beer; and the slaughterman having a drink of beer in between slaughtering animals.  In an EU facility alcohol would not even be allowed on the site; let alone a quick ‘guzzle’ in between animal killings !!

Serbia has a lot to learn about animal welfare; and we will do all we can to show up the differences between EU and Serbian standards.  There are no if’s or but’s; if Serbia becomes a future member of the EU then it will have to comply with EU standards.

We will do all we can to show these regulations are being enforced.

Post UPDATE 5/8/15.

26 November 2014

Company to end waste meat to energy operation at the end of the year, but will seek international arbitration in the United States over the project’s long-term future

Serbia’s only plant turning hazardous meat waste into an energy source that complies with all national legislation has been shut down over an argument between its owners and the government.

Belgium company Energo Zelena claims the Republic of Serbia’s “failure” to enforce its own legislation on treatment of hazardous animal by-products and ongoing “discriminating” against its business means its operation is not financially viable.

According to the company Serbian authorities have not treated its bids for work fairly and have instead handed deals to local companies run by Serbs. A spokesman said: “As foreign direct investors, we have been continuously discriminated against. As a result our investment is severely jeopardised and the company is operating with substantial loss.”

The company further claims waste meat is being illegally dumped as local authorities are failing to ensure it is sent to a proper processing facility.

See our past post from 2011 – does this have any relationship to this we ask ??

USA: American Dentist ‘Walter Palmer’ Shoots Famous Zimbabwe Lion (Cecil) With Bow and Arrow – So Useless At Being A ‘Hunter’ It Results In The Lion Having To Be Shot 40 Hours Of Agony Later.

USA1

Not just Cecil, which is disgusting enough, but Palmer is probably responsible now for the further deaths of Cecil’s six cubs which will be killed by another male lion.

The animal had a GPS collar fitted for a research project by UK-based Oxford University that allowed authorities to track its movements. The hunters tried to destroy it, but failed, according to the ZCTF.

On Monday, the head of the ZCTF told the BBC that Cecil “never bothered anybody” and was “one of the most beautiful animals to look at”.

The six cubs of Cecil will now be killed by the new male lion in the pride, Johnny Rodrigues added, in order to encourage the lionesses to mate with him.

Suggest you look at the CNN last link as it appears Mr. Palmer may have past links with the illegal killing of a bear.  Lets hope that the book and everything possible is thrown at him and his hunter friends; all trying to buck pass over to each other at the moment !

An American Dentist Killed Zimbabwe’s Famous Lion

Taylor Hill is TakePart’s associate environment and wildlife editor.

New reports reveal that Cecil’s killer was a U.S. citizen who paid $50,000 to have the 13-year-old male lured out of the park boundaries with bait.

Cecil the lion, a famous black-maned resident of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, died at the hands of an American dentist, conservationists claim.

They say Walter Palmer paid $50,000 to hunt and kill Cecil with a bow and arrow. The incident occurred around July 6, with a professional hunting outfit reportedly luring Cecil outside the boundaries of the protected reserve using a dead animal as bait.

“Mr. Palmer shot Cecil with a bow and arrow but this shot didn’t kill him,” Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said in a statement. “They tracked him down and found him 40 hours later when they shot him with a gun.

Cecil, who was known all over the world would have earned millions of dollars just from sightseeing. Walter Palmer apparently paid $50,000 for the kill.”

It wasn’t the first kill for Palmer, who has multiple photos posted on the website Trophy Hunt America showing the Minnesota resident posing with dead lions, rhinos, water buffalo, warthogs, and other animals.

The Telegraph is reporting from two independent sources that Palmer was indeed the hunter listed on the permit documents, and a spokesperson for Palmer told the news outlet that Palmer believes he is the one responsible for the lion’s death.

RELATED: Airline Takes On Big Game Hunters to Protect Rhinos, Lions, and Elephants

“As far as I understand, Walter believes that he might have shot that lion that has been referred to as Cecil,” the spokesperson said. “What he’ll tell you is that he had the proper legal permits and he had hired several professional guides, so he’s not denying that he may be the person who shot this lion. He is a big-game hunter; he hunts the world over.”

This Texas Cheerleader Likes Killing Lions and Smiling in Photos With Their Carcasses

In a statement sent to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Walter said he didn’t know the lion he killed was a local favorite, or that it was radio-collared for study by Oxford University professors.

“I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt,” tthe statement said. “Again, I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion.”

Theo Bronkhorst—the professional hunter who led Palmer to Cecil—and another hunter associated with the baiting, have reportedly been arrested by Zimbabwe police over the death of Cecil. The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority said they are trying to reach Palmer regarding the illegal hunt, and he could face poaching charges.

The Zimbabwe Professional Hunters and Guides Association said they have suspended Bronkhorst indefinitely from the organization for the way the hunt was carried out.

“ZPHGA reiterates it will not tolerate any illegal hunting or any unethical practices by any of its members and their staff,” the organization said in a statement. “We will await the completion of the current investigation by Zimbabwe Parks Wildlife Management Authority before commenting any further.”

Park rangers and regular visitors knew the 13-year-old lion as a tourist attraction, easily approached by safari guide jeeps for photo opportunities. Cecil had a propensity for lounging in the middle of roads, said Bryan Orford, a former park guide and a longtime visitor to Hwange. Hunting such an easy target only made the killing of Cecil even more wrong, he said.

“I used to drive down the railway line road following Cecil and had to wait for him to get off the road,” Orford told TakePart last week. “This walking in front of the vehicle would go on for ages. Other times he would lie in the road, and you had to drive off the road to go around him.”

The death of Cecil not only means one less endangered African lion in the world but also could mean the demise of a whole line of cubs sired by the leader of the Hwange pride.

The saddest part of all is that now that Cecil is dead, the next lion in the hierarchy Jericho will most likely kill all Cecil’s cubs so that he can insert his own bloodline into the females,” Rodrigues said. “This is standard procedure for lions.”

Now, conservationists and animal activists are flocking to a petition asking Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe to stop issuing hunting permits that allow for the killing of endangered animals. The petition was started July 22 and has picked up steam with the revealing of the hunter’s name. More than 90,000 have signed the Care2 petition as of Tuesday afternoon.

nepal 3

29/7/15  –  As we published last night, we can now confirm that action has been taken regarding the thousands of animals horrifically slaughtered every five years at the Gadhimai festival.

Here following is a link to the HSI site which gives a good account of the situation.

As you can see from all of our posts given at the end of this post, we have attempted to report on and provide updates relating to the most recent slaughter.  Sadly for the animals at the very recent festival, this decision came too late to help them, but we must be thankful now that many thousands of lives will be saved for the future.

Well done everyone who helped with this campaign – victory is yours ! — SAV.

Victory! Animal Sacrifice Banned at Nepal’s Gadhimai Festival,

Half a Million Animals Saved

Gadhimai Temple Trust agrees to cancel all future animal sacrifice, urges devotees not to bring animals to the festival

Humane Society International, Animal Welfare Network Nepal

New Delhi—In a move that will spare the lives of millions of animals over coming years, animal sacrifice has been cancelled indefinitely at Nepal’s Gadhimai festival, the world’s biggest animal sacrifice event held every five years for around 265 years. The decision announced by the Gadhimai Temple Trust follows rigorous negotiations and campaigning by Animal Welfare Network Nepal and Humane Society International/India.

Gauri Maulekhi, HSI/India consultant & Trustee, People for Animals, who petitioned India’s Supreme Court against the movement of animals from India to the Gadhimai festival, said, “This is a tremendous victory for compassion that will save the lives of countless animals. HSI/India was heartbroken to witness the bloodshed at Gadhimai, and we’ve worked hard to help secure this ban on future sacrifice. We commend the temple committee but acknowledge that a huge task lies ahead of us in educating the public so that they are fully aware. HSI/India & People for Animals will now spend the next three and a half years until the next Gadhimai educating devotees in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal on the Temple Trusts’ decision not to sacrifice animals. Animal sacrifice is a highly regressive practice and no nation in the modern world should entertain it.”

Please thank the Temple Trustees for their compassion.

Manoj Gautam, founding member of AWNN and campaigner against the Gadhimai festival, said, “We applaud the temple committee’s decision to end this mass slaughter of innocent animals and hope that they will continue to support us in our future endeavors for protecting animals in the country. AWNN’s progressive move to work directly with the temple committee, with Humane Society International/India’s support has been the key that changed the whole face of the campaign and is the reason for the achievement we have now.”

In 2014, HSI/India and AWNN’s global campaign against the Gadhimai animal massacre captured the public imagination when thousands of national and international supporters expressed their ire and displeasure against the ruthless killing. Protests were held worldwide.

With the Supreme Court of India’s intervention to prohibit the movement of animals from India to Nepal, AWNN and HSI/India saw a reduction of up to 70 percent in the number of animals sacrificed from 2009. The Supreme Court’s order resulted in more than 100 arrests of those breaching the order, and more than 2,500 animals saved. Earlier this month the Supreme Court of India issued directions to states to set up mechanisms to prevent animals from being taken to Gadhimai in future and create awareness against animal sacrifice.

Earlier this year, following the global outrage stemming from the Gadhimai massacre, the temple committee also decided not to sacrifice any animals during the harvest festival (Sankranti). Instead, the temple officials have been confiscating the animals and caring for them until rescuers can rehome them.

Mr Ram Chandra Shah, Chairman of the Gadhimai Temple Trust, issued a statement on the decision to stop holding animal sacrifices during the Gadhimai festival, which can be foundhere.

Please thank the Temple Trustees for their decision. Then, consider donating to support our lifesaving work. You can also sign up to receive more news and action alerts about animal protection.

Facts:

  • It is estimated that more than 500,000 buffalo, goats, chickens and other animals were decapitated at Gadhimai in 2009, but in 2014 the numbers had reduced by 70 percent.

  • The origins of Gadhimai date back around 265 years ago, when the founder of the Gadhimai Temple, Bhagwan Chowdhary, had a dream that the goddess Gadhimai wanted blood in return for freeing him from prison, protecting him from evil and promising prosperity and power. The goddess asked for a human sacrifice, but Chowdhary successfully offered an animal instead, and this been repeated every five years since.

  • Among others, President Emeritus of the World Council of Arya Samaj and noted social activist Swami Agnivesh were at the forefront of urging Indian devotees to boycott the mass slaughter by holding a hunger strike at the heart of the temple.

  • D. Sharma, director general of SSB, was awarded with the ‘Leadership in Animal Welfare’ award for his exemplary contribution in curbing the illegal transport of animals during Gadhimai.
