Warm hearts beat the cold

Trying to improve our winter mood đ

It’s getting cold at night…

Hello, world! đ

How many of you are in this photo?
All of the kitties in the shelter are safe and loved for life, but they do need help; especially to keep them both warm and fed during these cold winter months.
Thank you !

Newborn puppies buried alive in China given new lease of life by Animals Asia
10 December 2015
A group of six puppies that narrowly escaped death after being buried alive in China have been given a new lease of life by Animals Asia.
Our vets originally stepped up to help the puppies and their mother who were rescued and cared for by students after being buried alive on a university campus in Lanzhou, western China.
Theyâre now set to be rehoused with owners in the US and UK.

The tragedy of the mixed breed puppies caused widespread controversy after the story appeared in the international press. According to media reports, a group of security guards at Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics had buried the stray dogs alive.
A group of students heard dogs barking and, on closer investigation, saw an area of freshly laid turf. They started digging and found the helpless pups, who were thought to be just five weeks old as they were still suckling on their mother, named âBearâ.
Chinese media reported that the students, who did not wish to be identified, then cared for the dogs â hiding them in a nearby house and regularly bringing them meals.

The brilliant Jill with one of the pups
Jill Robinson, CEO and founder of Animals Asia, took up the story:
âAs soon as we were alerted to the story our Cat and Dog Welfare team, based in China, contacted Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics to try to track down these incredible young people and the dogs.
âWe managed to find them and made contact. Since the rescue in September the students have been taking it in turns to feed Bear while she fed her own pups. We helped by providing dog food and bedding and advising on their care.â
Without round-the-clock supervision, four of the seven puppies went missing in the weeks that followed, although one was later found again.
Jill said:
âThankfully, Bear and her remaining four puppies are now living at our sanctuary in Chengdu, along with two other puppies the students rescued after they too had been buried alive.
âTheyâre all currently awaiting rabies vaccinations, neutering and other medical checks, and in the new year will start new lives abroad.
Lord Robin Russell, one of our long time supporters in the UK, contacted us after his wife Lady Stephanie Russell read the story, and he then offered to pay for the dogs to be cared for and rehomed in the UK and the USA, utilising our expertise on the ground to make that happen. Lord and Lady Robin Russell are also expected to adopt Bear and are helping to find homes for the pups.
âWe owe a huge debt of gratitude to them for their help and financial aid in making all this happen and making it a happy ending for these traumatised puppiesâ.
Stray dogs are seen as a problem in China and, while there’s a growing generation of dog lovers in the country, many are still seen as pests. This is because of concerns over rabies and irresponsible dog ownership, for example abandoning dogs and failing to sterilise cats and dogs resulting in over population.
Animals Asiaâs Cat and Dog Welfare team met with officials at the Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics, to offer advice on animal welfare and dealing with the issue of stray dogs on campus more humanely.
Jill said:
âThe university representative was himself shocked by the incident and said they do not condone animal cruelty â indeed, as an education facility they feel they should promote the concept of caring for all living creatures, and to this end they are investigating the incident to ensure such a thing never happens again.â
The university did, however, express concern for the problem of stray dogs and the long-term potential risks, and agreed to educate and encourage students not to keep pets on campus. In addition, students have welcomed Animals Asiaâs offer to neuter and sterilise stray dogs on campus. This will effectively control and reduce the number of strays, and soften the temperament of those remaining, further reducing any health risks to students.
Jill continued:
âChina is often in the headlines for questionable practices regards animal welfare, but it is important to recognise that a great many people in China are kind, compassionate and dedicated to caring for animals. These students, and the staff we met with, are no exception. They acted swiftly to rescue the puppies and then dedicated time and effort to caring for them, so we hail them as heroes for their actions. They are a credit to the university and to all animals.â
Grateful thanks to the whole team involved:

Well Winter has arrived now and is letting everyone know that the days are shorter and a lot colder.
All the cats are doing fine but it must never be forgotten that they always need food, veterinary care (such as vaccinations) and a warm house in which they can bed down.
We at SAV are asking you to please consider giving something in the way of a donation to the shelter to help them get through this cold season. As we always say, anything you can give is very much appreciated and welcomed.
Here above and below are some pictures taken recently at the shelter showing a selection of the kitties.

CHANTAL

Above – Chantal today – a beautiful cat full of life; very different to the little kitten in October.
We have no idea of where or when Chantal was born, or how she ended up on the street all alone; what we do know is that she was found lying motionless near the pavement, most probably hit by a car.
She was the embodiment of utter despair, a tiny and seemingly hopeless creature with filthy, matted fur and wide terrified eyes that was totally unable to get up.
Her first X ray scan showed that she had a fracture of her right femoral head and all of us were puzzled to see that she was still able to put weight on her right rear leg, yet she was dragging the other one, so another X-ray scan needed to be taken and it turned out that she had a broken spine as well. Someone even mentioned putting her down, but we wanted to try and give her another chance, regardless of how slim it was, so we put her in the cage; she was being given painkillers together with vitamin B complex every day and we all just waited to see what would happen next.
Fortunately, even though her vertebrae were broken, the spinal cord remained unharmed and she promptly began to walk – staggering, stumbling and falling but she walked. A stroke of good luck in her life (which had been miserable so far) was that she befriended a healthy kitten weâd taken in around the same time. Slightly a little younger than she was, her new friend quickly became her therapist, her strength and the force that pushed her forward.
In just a couple of weeks, with huge help of her little pal, Chantal managed to beat all odds and emerged a winner đ She keeps improving by the day, she is already capable of climbing onto the bed and she spends most of her time doing more or less everything a healthy kitten would do â sheâs playing with cat toys, defending her place in a cat tunnel sheâs proclaimed to be hers, wrestling with her kitty friends and her days are finally full of joy.
She is not filthy and pitiable anymore; her long hair is shiny, sleek and soft and sheâs already showing what a gorgeous, luxurious furred beauty she will become when she grows up.
At such a tender age she was forced to endure something that no cat, much less a kitten should have to go though in a lifetime, but she fought like hell and she won because at least sometimes âfortune favors the braveâ.
Any donation to help, feed and keep the cats warm this winter; – please visit:
Below – Chantal’s first visit to the vet, in early October…

THANK YOU !

FURTHER UPDATE 8/11/15
SAV Comment – the following sounds like a very good idea and partial solution to the problems. We will try to find out about where to make donations, but for the moment we suggest using the Facebook limnk at the very end of this post – please make it clear in your mail that the donation is for Jelena and a car. Thank you.
Dear all..:) after Jelenas yesterday post (see below – SAV) the idea was born to collect for a car!
Costs for transport are so high and in Serbia it is possible to get one for max. 1500 âŹ!
I hope we all will be able to collect this amount, so Dragoslava Ljuboja and Jelena Ljuboja can buy their own car and minimize the transport costs in the future..
Glen Smith thank you in advance for your unbelievable donation of 500 ⏅:) and thank you all for your support now and in the past!

Original Announcement
After few days of thinking and calculating , we have made decision . After all , I think that all of you deserve to know everything about that . All of you know how much ill dogs we have .
For those who not know , we have dog with metastasis , dog with dislocated hip and something more ( with low funds probably never will know what ) , dog with crushed hip ( who also need lot of examination because obviously is il ) , 2 dogs with chronic gastro problems, dog with bigger heart ( consequence of heart worm ) , dog with epilepsy ( who also need more vet examination) , dog with lung problem , dog with bone problem, dog with arthritis , paraplegic dog with low function of kidneys and bladder .
It is not easy to watch them every day . I won’t lie , for so many years in animal welfare we never had so many dogs who need constant vet . Today I must inform you that all of them will not have any vet .
We have vet in Coka but that same vet did not recognised that cat has 3 dangerous virus even when she barely was alive. I do not want that for my dogs . We have vet in Senta but she only can work sterilisation and vaccination – she has no ultrasound, x-ray or lab. Our dogs need all that because of their condition. That is reason why I take them to nearest clinic that has all of that . They are great . They work careful , they pay attention on everything , and they often reduce my bills .
But , transport to them is expensive for us . For example , total costs for Charlotte was more than 600E . For her was collected 300E. Difference we had to pay from money for shelter food . and she is not only example . Some of dogs could not collect anything . Not only that , for some sterilisations we still owe money .
So this is reason of our decision. We can not allow that dogs be hungry . We buy them food every few days because never have enough to buy big packs for week or two . Or whole month . It is hard decision, it is not what we wanted but we now have no choice.
Maybe was better to leave them on the street , maybe some of them could find better luck than with us . Maybe . But it is too late . They are here and they will have to survive on their own. For so many years only 3 of our rescued dogs died, 2 because they were old , one because was ill and had bad vet . I only hope that that number will not increase now.
We have done everything for them, and maybe somebody will judge this decision , but I can not choose who will go to vet , who no. I live with all of them , I see when they are in pain, when they are bad , when they suffer .
And I gave everything that they be ok.
But in this point I do not have anything to offer them anymore . Sorry.
