USA: Urgent – Like Us, Please Donate To Save America’s Wolves.

wyoming wolf

Dear Mark, It all comes down to the next few days.

If far-right politicians get their way in Congress, many of our nation’s wolves will face constant pursuit, maiming and even violent deaths at the hands of hunters and trappers.

These politicians are sneaking wolf-killing “riders” into must-pass spending bills — and we need your help to stop them. With a vote expected to happen as soon as Friday, the Center is pushing hard to head off these poison pills, organizing our nearly 1 million members and supporters to speak out to Congress and tell them to drop this wolf-killing legislation.

We’re facing stiff opposition.

In Wyoming, if Rep. Cynthia Lummis succeeds, her rider would bring back shoot-on-sight rules that set no limits on wolf killing across much of the state. In the Great Lakes region, where 64 percent of Michigan citizens voted last year to end wolf hunting, the rider backed by newly-minted Speaker of the House Paul Ryan would ignore the people and jump-start organized hunts using neck snares and trained dogs that could decimate the wolf population.

This is not how democracy or wolf conservation should work. These kinds of fights take enormous resources, which is why a generous advocate has offered to match your contribution on behalf of wolves when you give before Dec. 31.

Please help by donating to the Endangered Species Defense Fund today.

We know from experience that when federal protections are yanked, wolves die and decades of recovery work come to a screeching halt. The Center and our allies won reprieves from these death sentences in many states, but if these riders pass, vicious wolf-killing campaigns will resume in Wyoming, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Oregon, Washington, Utah and Colorado could follow suit, eliminating safe havens for wolves one by one.

Please help us stop the killing by donating to the Endangered Species Defense Fund today.

The Center has made saving wolves a top priority for decades — leveraging science, law and activism to win a string of victories in court and Congress for their protection. Now we’re facing a whole new level of animosity as lawmakers commit themselves to ending wolf protection.

With your support, we’ll organize our lawyers, scientists and activists in Washington and across the country to oppose this deadly agenda. With the Center you can secure a future for America’s wolves and other wildlife on the brink of extinction, ensuring their protection, securing safeguards for their habitat and fighting off attacks by those looking to weaken the Endangered Species Act.

The enemies of wolves want to see them wiped out across most of the country for the second time in a century. The endgame is on.

Please donate as generously as you can to the Endangered Species Defense Fund. For the wild,

Kierán Suckling

Executive Director Center for Biological Diversity @KieranSuckling

Dear Mark,

Thank you for your generous contribution to the Center for Biological Diversity’s “Endangered Species Defense Fund”. Your tax-deductible gift will help our fight to defend the rare and valuable wild plants, animals and places we all love, as well as uphold the Endangered Species Act.

Your gift will be matched by another generous donor who shares your concern for protecting Earth’s precious biodiversity, making your gift especially powerful. For more than 25 years, the Center has tackled some of the most difficult and challenging environmental problems facing our planet and the future of life on earth – attacks on our bedrock environmental laws, climate change, population and sustainability issues, habitat loss for species, and pollution of the air, land and water that all life on Earth needs to survive.

Thanks to the loyal and generous help of our members, we’ve been able to safeguard nearly 600 imperiled species and close to a half a billion acres of wild habitat. Your help gives us the power to make a difference for the future of the planet by taking action in the courts, on the ground and in local communities.

Together with your support, we move forward with a wild and powerful love for the beauty, diversity and mystery of life on this planet.

Sincerely,

Kieran Suckling, Executive Director.

Well Winter has arrived now and is letting everyone know that the days are shorter and a lot colder.

All the cats are doing fine but it must never be forgotten that they always need food, veterinary care (such as vaccinations) and a warm house in which they can bed down.

We at SAV are asking you to please consider giving something in the way of a donation to the shelter to help them get through this cold season.  As we always say, anything you can give is very much appreciated and welcomed.

Stop Killing and Eating Live Animals on TV

Dear Mark

Last month you took action and called on the Scottish Government to close the loopholes and ban fox hunting for good. Over 2000 people did the same.

Meanwhile the OneKind team lobbied officials and whipped up the public debate online and in the press. Did you see any of the press coverage?

If not check out this fantastic article that appeared in the Herald at the start of the hunting season.

Together, we dialled up the pressure, and the Government had to respond.  We’ve been told to expect an announcement by the end of the year of an official review of the Act that was meant to have banned fox hunting. This review will then report its recommendations back to Government after the election in May and we hope it will then lead to new legislation going through Parliament. That means the next Parliament could finally end hunting with dogs for good – not just of foxes, but hares and other mammals too.

This is worth a little celebration. If we hadn’t made our voice heard, we could well have ended up with a superficial review and there would be little hope for a real ban. But it’s also the beginning of a long battle. The hunters will do everything they can to oppose change, but we believe that with the help of people like you, we will win.

Follow our campaign on Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks again for helping us to end cruelty to Scotland’s animals.

ban fur 1

Today, Respect for Animals director Mark Glover presented our new scientific report, entitled ‘The Case Against Fur Factory Farming: A Scientific Review of Animal Welfare Standards and WelFur’, at the European Parliament in Strasburg.

This report strikes right at the heart of the fur trade’s claims of ‘high animal welfare’ and explicitly exposes the extent of animal suffering that will occur under the ‘WelFur’ programme.

The document is an example of how Respect for Animals take on the fur trade in the most effective ways possible: by campaigning with policy makers and using robust science.

We will be sending copies of it to all officials and politicians in the EU as well as to legislatures of all the member states. Hopefully the report will provide the ever increasing numbers of opponents to fur farming with more ammunition with which to fight and end this callous cruelty in their own countries.

The backlash from the fur trade is likely to be strong, but you can help end this cruel industry by contacting your MEPs (click here to find out how) or by donating to support Respect for Animals’ work.

Please visit our website: www.respectforanimals.co.uk to read the report and find out more.

Urge Z Gallerie to Ditch Down Bedding and Pillows!

Z Gallerie stuffs many of its decorative accent pillows and bedding offerings with down feathers, which often come from birds who either are force-fed for the cruel production of foie gras or are live-plucked.

Force-feeding is a painful process in which birds have tubes rammed down their throats and their stomachs pumped so full of corn mush that their livers swell to as much as 10 times their normal size. Foie gras producers boost their profits by selling the feathers from these force-fed birds.

Dear Mark,

I recently returned from Brussels, where I presented the European Commission with our #CowOnTour petition, signed by 176,062 European citizens. Our simple, united message: Stop live farm animal exports.

Today, I want to share with you the story of #CowOnTour – and urgently call on you to use your voice once again to speak up for Europe’s exported farm animals.

Following the recent tragic events in Paris, to avoid extra pressure on the security services we cancelled our final #CowOnTour event in Brussels. However, thanks to your support, we were still able to secure a face-to-face meeting with the European Commission. They have promised us an official response to the petition, and we will share this with you when we receive it.

We also had an urgent second request for the Commission: Until a live export ban is in place, they must push EU countries not to approve road shipments to Turkey. This trade route is of particular concern because animals can be held at the border for days on end, crammed on trucks in hot, filthy conditions, without adequate rest or water. This is not only cruel, but clearly breaches EU law.

At least 12 member states have been approving exports to Turkey despite knowing that the delays make the journeys illegal.

Yet the Commission appears reluctant to intervene. If they won’t act, we will. Our cow may no longer be on tour – but let’s show those member states that Europe’s citizens are still on the case!

THANK YOU to everyone who backed the #CowOnTour, and for your ongoing support for the campaign to stop live exports from the EU. Together, we can end this cruelty.

 Pru Elliott

Campaign Officer

USA: A Hormel Exclusive Supplier In Pig Meat Products Is Exposed – “If the USDA is around, they would shut us down” – Lets Hope So !

USA

SAV Comment – people of the USA; please think about what some of your politicians have tried / are doing.  Introducing ‘Ag Gag’ legislation would stop all evidence such as that in the following video from being obtained.  Do you want that ? – should processors that abuse animals be allowed to continue their abuses un monitored by evidence gatherers ? – NO.  Then fight to stop ag gag being introduced by some states in the future.  The guys who film this are NOT the animals abusers; it is the workers at the facility who are.  Fight ag gag in every way that you can – be an animals voice.

This is What Pigs Endure to Become Bacon and Processed Meat

by Alicia Graef

November 14, 2015

“If the USDA is around, they could shut us down”

A disturbing video released this week by Compassion Over Killing (COK) has brought to light the horrifying treatment pigs are subjected to at a slaughterhouse that exclusively supplies Hormel Foods.

An investigator for the organization recorded footage at Quality Pork Processors (QPP), a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspected slaughterhouse in Austin, Minn., and uncovered heartbreaking treatment of pigs, in addition to serious issues impacting food safety.

Some of the problems shown in the video include pigs being beaten, shocked and improperly stunned and slaughtered while they’re still conscious, in violation of federal law, pigs who were too weak or sick to walk on their own being beaten and dragged to slaughter and others covered in feces and pus-filled abscesses being slaughtered and processed for food – complete with the USDA’s approval.

Warning: the video below is very graphic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPGIMCmpfxU

Problems with the treatment of pigs and other farm animals who are raised and killed for meat have continued to surface through these undercover investigations, but this one in particular is raising serious concerns about a questionable program intended to speed up production and essentially allow facilities to police themselves.

QPP is one of five pork processors in the U.S. that are currently participating in a pilot program that was implemented in the 1990s called the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point-Based Inspection Models Project (HIMP). The program allows for a disastrous combination of faster line speeds at slaughter and lower government oversight.

According to COK, at this particular facility approximately 1,300 pigs are killed each hour to make Hormel pork products, including Spam.

“The abuses we uncovered at Hormel reveal a high-speed slaughter hell for pigs,” said COK’s Executive Director Erica Meier. “Workers are taking inhumane shortcuts to keep the kill lines moving, and with fewer government inspectors on site, this flawed self-inspection system is also jeopardizing food safety.”

COK added in a statement that an audit done by the Office of Inspector General in 2013 had already identified multiple concerns about the HIMP program related to food safety and humane animal handling and that last year several USDA whistleblowers also spoke out about it, yet the USDA has allowed the program to continue unchecked.

Not only has it been allowed to continue, but last year the the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service launched a review to see if the program could be expanded.

Read more: http://www.care2.com/causes/this-is-what-pigs-endure-to-become-bacon-and-processed-meat.html#ixzz3raH9K01H

Unedited footage been given to local authorities and the USDA, which is now investigating.

“The actions depicted in the video under review are completely unacceptable, and if we can verify the video’s authenticity, we will aggressively investigate the case and take appropriate action,” USDA spokesman Adam Tarr told the Washington Post.

Meanwhile, COK is encouraging the USDA to end this dangerous program over concerns about the inhumane treatment of pigs and the risks it poses to food safety. Hopefully the attention this investigation is garnering will not only get this program shut down HIMP, but will help encourage people to stop supporting products that inherently perpetuate this type of abuse.

Take Action!

CHANTAL

chantal1

Above – Chantal today – a beautiful cat full of life; very different to the little kitten in October.

We have no idea of where or when Chantal was born, or how she ended up on the street all alone; what we do know is that she was found lying motionless near the pavement, most probably hit by a car.

She was the embodiment of utter despair, a tiny and seemingly hopeless creature with filthy, matted fur and wide terrified eyes that was totally unable to get up.

Her first X ray scan showed that she had a fracture of her right femoral head and all of us were puzzled to see that she was still able to put weight on her right rear leg, yet she was dragging the other one, so another X-ray scan needed to be taken and it turned out that she had a broken spine as well. Someone even mentioned putting her down, but we wanted to try and give her another chance, regardless of how slim it was, so we put her in the cage; she was being given painkillers together with vitamin B complex every day and we all just waited to see what would happen next.

Fortunately, even though her vertebrae were broken, the spinal cord remained unharmed and she promptly began to walk – staggering, stumbling and falling but she walked. A stroke of good luck in her life (which had been miserable so far) was that she befriended a healthy kitten we’d taken in around the same time. Slightly a little younger than she was, her new friend quickly became her therapist, her strength and the force that pushed her forward.

In just a couple of weeks, with huge help of her little pal, Chantal managed to beat all odds and emerged a winner 🙂 She keeps improving by the day, she is already capable of climbing onto the bed and she spends most of her time doing more or less everything a healthy kitten would do – she’s playing with cat toys, defending her place in a cat tunnel she’s proclaimed to be hers, wrestling with her kitty friends and her days are finally full of joy.

She is not filthy and pitiable anymore; her long hair is shiny, sleek and soft and she’s already showing what a gorgeous, luxurious furred beauty she will become when she grows up.

At such a tender age she was forced to endure something that no cat, much less a kitten should have to go though in a lifetime, but she fought like hell and she won because at least sometimes “fortune favors the brave”.
