Reception in UK Parliament’s House of Commons for campaigners to end the dog meat trade in Asia

On 28 January, campaigners for dog and cat welfare across Asia gathered at a reception at the House of Commons to promote greater awareness and Parliamentary support for their work to bring an end to the dog meat trade.

Animals Asia was represented as part of the Asia Canine Protection Alliance (ACPA). Guests were addressed by our UK AA ambassador, actor Peter Egan, and shown the moving film created by Soi Dogs on the realities of the dog meat trade in Thailand, which deeply shocked all who saw it.

The event was attended by Dame Judi Dench and several members of Parliament. The successful outcome of the meeting has been a pledge to hold a full Parliamentary debate on the issue in the near future, and to encourage and work more closely with political contacts in Asian countries working to end the dog meat trade.

Vietnam PM says NO to cruel festivals

In a direct response to our (AA) campaign to stop Vietnam’s pig slaughter festival – Vietnam’s Prime Minister has announced “old fashioned, superstitious and negative” festivals will end.

And it’s all thanks to your support!

The speech is widely seen as a direct reference to Animals Asia’s international campaign opposing the Nem Thuong pig slaughter festival which gathered thousands of signatures from around the world.

With the eyes of the world on Vietnam, the village of Nem Thuong continued with their bloody and superstitious event in full defiance of the will of the Vietnamese people and authorities, 79% of whom had voiced their opposition to the cruel festival.

While we will have to wait for news of changes to festivals – the Prime Minister’s will is clear and we will push for that to become definitive action.

Following the Prime Minister’s speech, the Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism, Hoang Tuan Anh echoed his statements and many of the arguments Animals Asia has raised over the past two months, saying:

“The ministry has decided that negative activities such as buffalo stabbing and pig chopping…in festivals will be reviewed.

“In a country rich in tradition and culture, we cannot have the image of a pig being brought to a village centre for hundreds of people to witness its head being cut off and its blood pouring out – this is not suitable with a peaceful and hospitable country like Vietnam.”

Animals Asia’s Vietnam Director, Tuan Bendixsen said:

“This is an enormously positive move from the highest levels of Vietnamese governance. It shows that the country is listening and reacting to the will of the people who were near unanimous in their condemnation of festivals like Nem Thuong.

“Now we must continue to monitor the situation to ensure that animals are protected from cruelty. Our work will go on behind the scenes to ensure the Prime Minister’s directive is enforced so that the barbaric scenes of this year are not repeated in the next.”

Animals Asia founder and CEO, Jill Robinson MBE said:

“It never ceases to amaze what can be achieved when we come together. Our supporters around the world should be very proud today. From the smallest of individual actions, multiplied to a factor of thousands, to the tireless efforts of individuals on the ground we have achieved real change and have every chance of ending cruel festivals in Vietnam.

“This is about more than one animal. It is about what is acceptable in modern society. A pig died this year in tragic, awful, cruel circumstances, but in the discussion surrounding it – new impetus was given to Vietnam’s growing animal welfare movement.”

Moon bear’s recovery is fruit of compassion

 AA moon bear March 15

Rescued moon bear Nhan Ai finally completed her long process of rehabilitation as she stepped out onto the grass of her enclosure at Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.

Her incredible recovery was made possible by a change of heart by her former owner.  Where once he saw only a resource – he looked again and saw an animal who deserved better.

After 14 years of extracting Nhan Ai’s bile, 80-year-old Phan Thanh Dai decided that it was time for her to go free and contacted Animals Asia.

A Buddhist monk was brought to the house to bless Nhan Ai as she began her 1,600km journey to our sanctuary and ultimately, the long road to rehabilitation.

Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear and Vet Team Director Annemarie Weegenaar said:

“As is common in bears who have spent their entire lives in cages suffering bile extraction, Nhan Ai was very nervous when she first arrived. Her situation is very similar to Ti Map – she’s finding it hard to socialise with other bears and was similarly reluctant to brave the great outdoors.

“Thankfully she’s now outside foraging and enjoying herself. She’s physically a healthy bear, now we just need some of the bears to charm her and show her that bears can be great friends.”

Animals Asia founder and CEO, Jill Robinson MBE said:

“Nhan Ai’s story is incredibly important – her former owner chose this future for her – he allowed her to go free and started to atone for the decades of suffering he’d caused.   It couldn’t contrast more heavily with the current behaviour of the farmers in Halong Bay who are determined to hang on to animals they see only as assets.  They’ve spurned each chance to do the right thing – seeing the bears only as moneymaking machines.

“It is so, so fitting that Nhan Ai means compassion. From the previous ‘owner’ ready to give her up, to the vet team that rehabilitate her and the keepers who care for her – not to mention supporters willing to donate for her care – it’s compassion that allows bears to be rescued.

Hanoi dog owners celebrate at first Dog Day

AA Hanoi Dog owners March 15

Hanoians showed love and compassion for their canine companions at the Asian Canine Protection Alliance (ACPA)’s recent Dog Day event.

Over 200 people with more than 80 dogs joined the fun day out taking part in a variety of games and participating in a dog show where the emphasis was on fun for both guardian and companion.

Attendees were able to give their companions a free health check from visiting Animals Asia vets, while basic dog training advice was also on hand.

Le Duc Chinh, ACPA’s Hanoi coordinator said:

“The whole day was really fun for both dogs and their guardians. It’s not often that people with a mutual love of dogs get to meet and share their passion so this was a great opportunity for likeminded Hanoians to get together and celebrate our canine friends.”

As Animals Asia and ACPA continue to battle the dog meat industry in Vietnam it’s worth remembering that while the popularity of eating dog is waning – the popularity of dogs as companions has never been higher.

International support for Halong Bay bear release

AA2

Animals Asia’s campaign to free the remaining moon bears in Vietnam’s Halong Bay has received widespread support from around the world.

In just two months, Animals Asia’s call to action was echoed by more than 100,000 people worldwide who signed the letter asking that the surviving bears be brought to our nearby sanctuary.

This campaign has been boosted by diplomatic pressure from 12 ambassadors in Hanoi who wrote directly to the Vietnamese Prime Minister requesting that the issue be resolved.

Following the confirmation of four more bear deaths in early March, an emergency government meeting was convened to address the issue.

On the eve of the meeting, Animals Asia published an open letter to the Vietnamese Prime Minister urging that Vietnam’s laws be upheld and the country’s natural heritage be protected for future generations.

The surviving 19 bears remain in critical condition with an incredible 30 bears dying since an Animals Asia inspection in November last year.

Animals Asia is awaiting the outcome of the emergency meeting while continuing to lobby for a clear timeline and legal mandate to rescue these bears.

Fixby Junior School (UK) over the moon with their fundraising ball for the bears

AA Junior school March 15
Year 5 and 6 pupils of Fixby Junior School in Huddersfield, UK became passionate supporters last year of our campaign to end bear farming. Determined to help end the bears’ torture, their teacher, Ms Priestley, and her class embarked on a series of fundraising efforts and class projects to help raise awareness of their suffering.

They held an animal day raising £400, which they presented to Jill during her UK trip in 2014, and this year have just organised a charity ball, raising over £2,000. We are very grateful to them for their magnificent efforts.

Dr Dog Adi highly commended at PDSA’s animal awards

 AA Dr Dog March 15

In July 2014, we put forward the story of Guangzhou Dr Dog Adi for PDSA’s prestigious animal awards. We are delighted to say that Adi, and his owner Miss Shan, have achieved recognition among thousands of entrants and been highly commended.

After overcoming many behavioural issues of his own, Adi succeeded in becoming a Dr Dog in 2014 and, since that time, has inspired several children to develop a love of dogs, particularly one young student who was terrified of dogs. Thanks to Adi’s calm nature, and friendly behaviour, Xiaojun can now interact happily with all the other Dr Dogs in the programme.

Once a dog abandoned by all, Adi is now a fully fledged member of Animals Asia’s Dr Dog team and, accompanied by Miss Shan, is helping to spread our message across Guangzhou, the dog eating capital of China, that dogs and cats can bring joy and companionship into people’s lives and should, in turn, be regarded as friends, not food.

We hope that like us, you feel that reading all of the above is such great news for animals; especially in the Far East.  The campaigning continues everywhere and as a result, the animal movement grows ever stronger, day by day, week by week.  SAV.

Australia: Big Live Exports Demo Sunday 22nd March – Can You Do It ?

australia

stop live exports aus

Dear Mark

This government has shown that it not only supports the unethical live animal export trade, it is also hell-bent on increasing it and opening up any new markets it can, even if it means taking the already inadequate welfare guidelines that offer some protection, and altering or eradicating them to suit new markets that don’t want to be dictated to.

This is despite ongoing breaches being exposed on at least a monthly basis, and despite the fact that every single animal protection organisation worldwide agrees that live animal exports are inherently cruel and cannot be done humanely.

They have even refused to halt live cattle exports to Vietnam despite recent concerns by industry itself that horrific acts of cruelty are commonplace in Vietnamese abattoirs and fears that supply chains can’t be guaranteed.

Please join us in being a voice for those who can’t speak – we want a HUGE visual presence this year – we will have banners, placards, flyers and stickers – come and be a part of the Stop Live Exports contingent as we march through the streets in a show of opposition to this current governments stance on live exports. Wear your t shirt if you have one.

Melissa Parke, ALP Federal MP for Fremantle and Greens Senator Scott Ludlam are amongst the scheduled speakers.

USA: Actress Pamela Anderson is Teaming Up with Mercy For Animals to Expose Chicken Slaughter.

USA1

Gory food service MFA

MFA logo

Dear Mark,

Did you know the USDA itself estimates as many as 1 million birds are scalded alive at slaughterhouses every year in the United States? It’s downright shameful.

Actress Pamela Anderson is teaming up with Mercy For Animals to expose and end this horror.

Pamela narrates a video from a new MFA undercover investigation into a poultry supplier for Gordon Food Service—the largest private foodservice distributor in the country—about chickens being violently shackled, cut open, and scalded alive.

Gordon Food Service supplies restaurants like PF Chang’s, Red Robin, Perkins, Culver’s, and The Melting Pot.

The stomach-turning video footage reveals:

Birds recklessly and violently shackled upside down, their fragile wings and legs breaking in the process

Severely sick, injured, and dying chickens sent through the slaughter line along with other birds intended for human consumption

Frightened birds dragged through an electrified vat of water, painfully shocked but left fully conscious

Birds having their throats sliced open while still conscious and able to feel pain

Live, conscious birds scalded to death in feather-removal tanks

Pamela speaks up for the birds – watch the video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv8TkneheK0

This important story broke in The New York Times yesterday. Click here to read the exposé.

Even though more than 95 percent of the animals killed for food in this country are chickens, these sensitive and intelligent animals are excluded from the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.  This means Gordon Food Service chicken suppliers get away with torturing to death millions of animals a year in ways that would be illegal if the victims were cows or pigs.

We cannot allow this to continue!

Pamela Anderson and MFA are calling on Gordon Food Service to adopt meaningful animal welfare guidelines for all of its suppliers to prevent the worst forms of animal abuse in its supply chain, including immediately switching to systems that eliminate the horrific suffering caused by dumping, shackling, shocking, and slaughtering conscious animals.

As the largest private foodservice provider in the country, Gordon Food Service has enormous power and influence to end many of the worst forms of institutionalized animal abuse in the poultry industry.

Please, take a moment to sign Pamela Anderson and MFA’s petition calling on Gordon Food Service to stop torturing chickens.

Then please share the hidden-camera video with friends and encourage them to take action too. And if you haven’t done so already, please consider ending your support of this needless cruelty altogether by adopting a compassionate vegan diet.

Sincerely,

Nathan Runkle

President

P.S. You can make a special tax-deductible donation to support MFA’s hidden heroes who work undercover to expose and stop systemic animal abuse on factory farms.

March news from Keith Taylor – SE England Member For the European Parliament (MEP).

 keith taylor 2

Dover Live Exports Inquiry

Keith has labelled the exporting of live farm animals both “cruel” and “needless”, in evidence submitted to Dover Council’s inquiry into the trade. The one year inquiry, which concluded this month, recommended that the council urge for laws to be changed so that ports can refuse the trade and that the RSPCA should be present during all shipments, to ensure EU laws are fully enforced.

Keith is opposed to live exports and welcomes further recognition that farm animals are not ‘goods’ but sentient beings.

 —————————–

News from SAV –

From the above – “laws to be changed” – mean the UK 1847 Act.

So what is the ‘1847 Act’ that could possibly change / stop live exports from the UK ?

As you can see from the ‘About Us’ section of this site – https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/about-us/  – SAV founder Mark has had some 25 (or more) years experience with many aspects of the live animal transport trade in Europe.  Thus, we feel that we have some experience when we say that the UK could enforce legislation to make the live export of live farm animals to mainland Europe much harder.  This could be undertaken by amending the UK legislation of the 1847 Act

The Act is UK legislation which could be amended in Parliament by a British government – it has nothing at all to do with EU law – the British government could amend the law independently if they wished.  Instead they hide behind the EU; informing UK campaigners that things cannot be changed because of EU law.  Was the UK part of the EU in 1847 ? – dont think so !

We have always felt this is wrong and the UK could act independently by amending the 1847 Act if it really wanted to take real action against live animal export from the UK.

Remember the Battle of Waterloo ?

waterloo

Remember, just as a basic guide to the age of this legislation that the UK government STILL works to; the famous Battle of Waterloo – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Waterloo  took place in June 1815.

Some 32 years after the Battle, the UK passed legislation for the 1847 Act – and it is still used today – 2015 !!   – have we not moved on into Century 21 now and should the law regarding rules in UK ports not reflect this ? – or is the actual 21st Century reality that the British government does not want to amend the law in favour of UK live animals; but instead try to mislead the British public into believing that we cannot stop the trade in live animals because of ‘Europe’.

So how does the 1847 Act affect UK port regulations ?

A UK law that is over 160 years old, the ‘Harbours, Docks and Piers Clauses Act 1847’, means that public ports across Britain have no say in whether they wish to accept the trade in live animal exports

In other words; they ARE forced to take the trade in live animals by law, EVEN IF the port and its management were completely opposed to being involved.

Here is a link to the antiquated Act still being used today – http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Vict/10-11/27

We know from many, many years of campaigning experience that many UK Port Authorities (probably all) would rather not allow shipments of live animals from ‘their’ port. But as long as this outdated legislation remains on the books, their hands are tied.  They are legally obliged to allow the trade to continue; despite their objections.

Jane1

By the term ‘outdated legislation’, we mean that the Harbours, Docks and Piers Clauses Act became law in 1847; and is still being used as the reason for ports to take the trade in live animals today – 2015 !!

The 1847 Act is an ‘SI’ law – this stands for ‘Statutory Instrument’.  An SI is an act of UK law, made by a UK Parliament, which can be changed by a UK ParliamentIt is NOT EU legislation.

The Harbours, Docks and Piers Clauses Act (1847) states that all ports must allow the free trade of ‘goods’, including farm animals. So, by law, British public ports must allow lorries full of animals to pass through, even if the port authority doesn’t agree with the trade. It’s about time this law was updated so that ports can legally refuse consignments of live, SENTIENT (under EU law), animals without fear of legal repercussions.

Jane 4

The amendments we’re calling for are not unreasonable. And if the UK does get challenged by the EU the UK Government should do the right thing and stand up for the animals facing export. The Government should take the case to the European Courts if necessary.  But we do not feel that this would even happen in the first place.

Nicola 1

Nicola 2

Below is reference to the Compassion In World Farming (CIWF) issue of the 1847 Harbours, Docks and Piers Clauses Act.

http://action.ciwf.org.uk/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=119&ea.campaign.id=21798&ea.tracking.id=05bb9ddb

As the article states, “the Government Department that oversees live exports, don’t seem to understand what we are calling for. They believe that amending the 1847 Act would be a ban on live exports – and illegal under EU law”.

It is not a case of banning the live animal export trade; but simply giving all ports the OPTION of what trades they allow to pass through their port(s).

This legislation is a 1847 Harbours, Docks and Piers Clauses Act is a Statutory Instrument (SI), is the principal form in which delegated legislationis made in Great Britain. They are governed by the SI Act of 1946.

An SI is an act of UK law, made by a UK parliament, which can be changed by a UK Parliament.  It is not EU legislation which an antiquated British government still loves to hide behind.

Sheep legs

So the outcome of what we are calling for is for the UK government to amend the 1847 Act; give ports the choice to refuse live animals exports; and thus have a legal impact on the trade in live animals to Europe.

This is just one of many animal welfare issues which we hope will see David Cameron and his cronies thrown out of government in the May 2015 UK General Election !!

 Cameron good day

Did someone mention the 1847 Act ??

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear President,

Dear Excellencies,

Dear Ministers,
Dear Ambassadeurs,
Mrs. Mr.
And to whom it may concern :

We, Citizens of Europe and of the world, are writing for expressing our indignation about the barbaric sacrifices in Nepal.

Today, more than ever because of global warming and the degradation of the planet, we must watch over it. This moral problem concerns all inhabitants of the planet!

Nepalis say that the sacrifices of Ghadimai occur every 5 years, Certainly, but simply in the name of a popular and superstitious belief, millions of animals must be fed before their horrific sacrifice. We know that intensive farming is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in general.

We respect Nepal and its traditions but Nepal must respect the planet that belongs to everyone.

Today the planet demands our attention because we ask him more than it can deliver.

We inform you that we will not visit Nepal, as long as these unworthy atrocities will continue! We live in 2015, not in pre-historic era!

Thank you to read the rest of this letter:

Please read this email, have a look at the pictures and video’s.

Can you, as a human being, tell me this is right ?

All this horrible suffering ?

As you may be aware, this year’s Khokana Festival was held on 12th August (the day after Gai Jatra). We wait for confirmation from AWNN about the goat sacrifice – whether it will take place, what action is being taken to prevent it, etc. In the meantime, there are numerous other rituals taking place in Nepal involving gratuitous cruelty to animals which are largely unreported. Here are just a few:-

1. The ritual of tearing the heart out of a live piglet at a Newari Festival: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fToJo3CWhr8

2. Sacrifice of a goat at Nuwakot Durbar Square. A priest drinks blood from the dying goat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vxOCrNSdTU

3. The annual sacrifice of buffaloes and goats in Achham during November. The buffaloes suffer a long and agonizing death as they are hacked to death. Villagers believe that the more often “devotees” bite and hack at the buffaloes, the more satisfied the goddess Barbadevi Mai will be.

Khokana Festival’ Day… the day that a 5-6 month old goat is thrown in a pond close to Rudrayani temple in Khokana, a village in the south of Kathmandu Valley, following which nine young men will enter the pond and then start to …tear the goat apart by grasping its legs, ears, hoof or tail. The one who manages to kill the goat is the ‘hero’ and will lead the Shinkali dance which is held afterwards.

Please see video, at:

http://www.occupyforanimals.net/gadhimai-festival-in-nepal.html

Khokana residents have witnessed the barbaric scene year in, year out, and think it provides religious merit.

It is not clear why and when the cruel goat-killing was introduced. Locals believe that when children started to drown in the pond in the 12th century, residents started to drown a live goat to appease the gods. However, there is evidence showing that devotees in former times offered fruits and flowers in the temple and that the act with the struggling goat was introduced to create a spectacle.

Despite the attempts of AWNN (Animal Welfare Network Nepal) and the village anti-sacrifice group to stop the goat sacrifice, it looks as though it will take place yet again today, 12th August (the day after Gai Jatra).

ON ANIMAL SACRIFICE IN NEPAL

First off: Animal sacrifice is the ritual killing of an animal as part of a religion. It is practised by many religions as a means of appeasing a god or gods or changing the course of nature. Animal sacrifice has turned up in almost all cultures, from the Hebrews to the Greeks and Romans and from the Aztecs to the Hindus and is still practiced today.

Remnants of ancient rituals of animal sacrifice are apparent in many cultures, for example the Spanish bullfights, or kapparos in Judaism, or ritual slaughter procedures like shechita or ḏabīḥah in Judaism and Islam, respectively and many other forms.

IN NEPAL, animal sacrifice is part of various ‘puja’ ritual offerings performed when Hindus worship idols. Animals are killed to get once wish fulfilled, to sanctify weddings, new homes or religious festivals.  Upon purchasing a new car or truck, the owner sometimes splashes its exterior with fresh animal blood, to ensure the vehicle doesn’t crash whenever it is driven.
For certain groups ‘puja’ is merely symbolic — an offering of fruits, vegetables, butter, yogurt, money or flowers. For others ‘puja’ must involve animal blood. This death to please the gods is also interpreted as doing the animal a favour by releasing it from a life of suffering.

Sacrifices are performed as a mass bloodletting, such as during the Durga Puja festival when, once a year, soldiers in the centre of Kathmandu decapitate hundreds of water buffalos and goats — trying to dispatch each with a single stroke. During Nepal’s largest festival, the Dasain feast in early autumn, up to 10,000 goats and other animals are slaughtered. Among sacrificial animals are water buffaloes, male goats, lamb, sheep, chicken, ducks, birds, snakes and pigs. Contrary to what people tend to belief, sacrifice causes great distress and suffering to the animals involved.

In the next video:

Animal sacrifice in Bhaktapur Square, Kathmandu, Nepal. Argued as a mainstream part of Nepali culture and Hindu culture. The ceremony in fact does ask for animal’s agreement to sacrifice – through man’s interpretation anyway – with signal that animal shakes its head!

The world’s goriest mass killing of animals – the Gadhimai Festival – which is an unparalleled religious madness during which a few hundred thousands buffaloes, pigs, goats,  pigeons, rabbits and chickens will be killed as part of the blood-soaked festival held every five years (November 24, 25) to honour the Hindu goddess of power.

There have been protest against this mass animal slaughtering in Nepal and all over the world, but despite all the protests, the festival and the slaughtering of animals went on in 2009 festival and is expected to be ‘celebrated’ again.

Around 250.000 animals were slaughtered, including the young ones of the animals.

THE ANIMAL SACRIFICE CALENDAR OF NEPAL

In Nepal there is not much respite for animals destined to be sacrificed. Here is a summary of sacrificial events held in Nepal throughout the year (courtesy of Stop Animal Sacrifice).

January

Maghesakrati – This festival celebrates the first day of the Nepali month Magha (Mid January) when Winter ends and Summer is heralded. Thousands of Hindu devotees dip in the river. In Talukchandani village in Nuwakot district fights between oxens are organized. Although the oxens are not made to fight till death they often get badly injured. No arrangements for medical treatment are made. In the 2008 fight one of the oxens received a deep wound while the other fractured its leg.

March
Blood drinking festival – Early March the first in a series of yak blood drinking festivals is organized in Nangi, Myagdi district. In April/May and June/July similar happenings take place in lower Mustang. During the event the jugular veins of yaks are pierced and blood is collected in cups. Hundreds of people buy the blood, believed to have medicinal qualities. The yaks recover but it is a stressful event for the animals.
Chaite Dasain – This festival is also called ‘small Dasain’ as it lasts only for 2 days while Dasain in September/October lasts for 9 days. Animal sacrifices, especially of water buffaloes and goats, are an important feature of the festival. Blood sacrifices are carried out in Durga temples across the country. Both during Dasain and Chaite Dasain the Nepal army conducts sacrifices at Hanuman Dhoka palace in Kathmanduand the guardhouse in Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

April
Godhe Jatra – During the Horse Festival a grand horse parade takes place at Tundikhel, in the heart of Kathmandu. Another event takes place in Bal Kumari area in Patan where a horse is intoxicated with spirits. An equally drunk person in a traditional Newari attire rides it. People shout to frighten and enrage the animal until it runs madly with the rider clinging to it.
Bisket Jatra/New Year – During Bisket for seven days chariots representing Bhairava and Goddess Bhadrakali are pulled through Bhaktapur. On the 3rd day panch bali (five animals) involves the sacrifice of a chicken, duck, goat, sheep and buffalo. On the 4th day the government sends state offerings: 2 sacrificial goats. On New Year day farmers sacrifice female chicken that have not yet laid eggs.

May
Budha Jyanti/Rana Kul Puja – The Nepali month Jyestha (May/June) is the month for Newar and Rana clan pujas which involve the sacrifice of countless goats and ducks. The Rana clan puja is held on Buddha’s birthday and sees the killing of hundreds of goats.
Panauti festival – Panauti is located 30 km outside of Kathmandu. Its festival is apalanquin and chariot festival. The 9 day festival starts in Jyestha (May-June) and ends in Ashad (June-July). On the 5th day Panauti residents sacrifice male goats and ducks

June
Navadurga/Bhagasti –The nine goddesses or Nava Durga are worshipped with masked dances which begin in Dashain in October and end in Bhagasti in June. Countless animals are sacrificed during rituals accompanying the dances. The dancers get intoxicated on the fresh blood spewing from the necks of dying animals as well as alcohol. The animals who are killed in the presence of the public and whose blood is drank include goats, ducks and buffaloes.

Some of the extreme forms of cruelty in the Tantric rituals include the removal of the heart of a live piglet, the biting off of the head of a cock (see September) and the eating of blood-stained offerings.

The dances are also performed in the major places of Kathmandu Valley and Kavre district. In Lalitpur district the dances are organized in Patan and villages such as Pharping, Khokana, Harasiddhi. In Kathmandu district the dances are performed in Sankhu and Pharping. The number of animal sacrifices varies from place to place. Moderately wealthy families may offer panchabali (five species of animals). Elaborate sacrifices takes place in Theco, Khokana and Jala, more than fifty ducks and twenty-five goats are offered in just one of the rituals.

August
Khokana festival – Khokana festival is held every year in August, the day after Gai Jatra. A 5-6 month old live goat is thrown in a pond close to Rudrayani temple in Khokana, a village in the south of Kathmandu Valley. Nine young men enter the pond and start to tear the goat apart by grasping its legs, ears, hoof or tail. The one who manages to kill the goat is the ‘hero’ and leads the Shinkali dance which is held afterwards.

September
Dasain – Dasain festivals is Nepal’s largest festivals which is celebrated during the month of Kartik (late September and early October). During the Dashain festivals (Dasain and Chaite Dasain – see March), priests perform various Tantric rituals to Goddess Durga Bhawani, and the Living Goddess Kumari. Dasain sees the greatest numbers of animals sacrificed. During Kalrati, in Taleju Temple, the government publicly beheads 54 buffaloes and 54 he-goats, followed by the killing of 108 buffaloes by the Nepal Army. The event draws many devotees and is screened on national Television. At the same time in the palace in Gurkha 108 buffaloes are being beheaded. This marks the start of mass sacrifice by the people across the country; it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of goats are being sacrificed during Dasain as well as an unknown number of buffaloes, ducks, chicken, birds, etc.

Dasain Bhaktapur – At Taleju temple in Bhaktapur 25 buffaloes and some 20 goats are killed by cutting their throats and spilling blood over all the images. Only then they are beheaded. The temple area is soaked with blood. The heads of the animals are displayed around the image of Taleju.

During the Navadurga dances, on the ninth day of Dasain, people feed a water buffalo drunk on rice beer. The staggering animal is chase by a crowd of people it to Brahmayani where nine Goddesses are installed at the night. The priest performs a Tantric worship to sacrifice the drunk buffalo believed to be possessed by a demon called Mahi-sa-shur. The nine Navadurga dancers receive a fountain of blood in their mouth directly from the vein of the buffalo.

In one ritual a dancer bites off the head of a cockrel and drinks the blood that spews out.

Another ritual is the chasing of a sacrificial pig, stolen by groups of young men and boys. The youngsters run around carrying the squeaking pig under their jackets and passing it quickly from one to the other. The animal is released after two hours after which a dancer grabs it. He tears the heart of the live baby pig out after which it is eaten raw. As the dancers are forbidden to use knives or instruments the lead dancer tears the skin under the piglet’s forelegs with his fingernails, insert his hand and pulls out the heart. The dancers drink blood from the piglet’s open chest.

October
(See September)

November
Indrayani – This festival is held during the new moon night at the Indrayani temple at Swayambhunath. During the previous night three buffaloes are slaughtered in the temple. The first buffalo’s throat is cut and its blood sprayed all over the temple and the goddess images. The other animals’ heads are cut off. The head, heart and lungs of one buffalo are burned in the sacred fire. Climax of the festival is the sacrifice of a pair of live snakes by throwing them into a sacrificial fire. Apart from snakes pairs of live sparrows, grasshoppers and fishes are burned alive while others are released by throwing them into the air. Serpent sacrifices are known from three other places inNepal.

Gadhimai – This festival held in Bara district takes place every five years in November.

It is known as one of the worst forms of animal cruelty in the world.

In a span of 2 days some 200,000 animals are sacrificed. 20,000 buffaloes are publicly beheaded by licensed butchers who randomly hack the animals to death. In a span of 5 km around the Gadhimai temple anyone can kill any kind of animal in whatever manner. After 2 days the place has turned into a foul smelling marsh land covered in blood and animal remains.

Elephant polo – The World Elephant Polo Championship takes place in Nepal annually from late November till early December. Elephant polo may seem a fun game but remember that elephants do not naturally ride bicycles, balance on balls or play polo. In order to force them to perform these confusing and physically uncomfortable tricks, trainers typically use cruel training methods that inflict pain and cause fear.

Please accept the expression of our deepest concern and respect.

As of now we encourage everybody to boycott your animal abusing nation until you live in the 21st Century; NOT the Dark Ages.

You are not civilized and never will be all the time this mass slaughter is allowed !

Sincerely,

Serbia: Appeal For Donations For Next Tank Of Gas – Can You Help Please ?

Gas tank 2 3

Danica Mirkovic Shelter Felix

FELIX

Please share and help if you can!

No matter how hard we’ve tried to raise the funds for one more tank of gas for central heating, we’re still far from reaching the goal.

Wonderful Laura Simpson and her awesome organization The Great Animal Rescue Chase & Harmony Fund have stepped in again and have done as much as they could, but we’re around $1000 US short nonetheless.

Gas tank 2 1

The additional problem is that the gas delivery trucks have to travel more than 200 km in both directions in order to deliver us the heating fuel and naturally, the gas company won’t even consider sending it on such a long trip if it’s half empty.

It’s not that cold right now (although it’s not warm either), but we’re expecting a drop in temperature accompanied with strong wind and sleet next week, so we’ll have to switch to electric heaters until we succeed in raising the entire sum of money needed for a full tank of gas.

Gas tank 2 2

A significant number of the Felix kitties are 18 -19 years old and they simply can’t handle the kind of cold that young and healthy cats can.
Once again, we’re reaching out to all of you to help us keep the cats warm and comfortable!

Even the smallest donation means a lot as everything adds up and gets us closer to our goal! Our gas tank’s gotten almost empty now and this is really a time sensitive emergency!

Gas tank 2 4
