Cruel Badger Cull Meets Embarrassing End

http://www.care2.com/causes/cruel-badger-cull-meets-embarrassing-end.html

Two controversial badger culls have been labelled as failures and have finally been stopped after it became clear that those going after them wouldn’t be able to kill enough badgers to meet their targets. While this has led to relief among animal advocates, it also raises concerns that what was done will make things worse.

The pilot programs were run in Gloustershire and Somerset in an effort to stop the spread of Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) among cattle, but killing badgers to solve the problem has caused controversy among scientists, farmers, the government and animal advocates.

The programs were designed to see whether or not shooting free-running badgers at night, as opposed to trapping them, would help stop the spread of bTB. Scientists and animal advocacy groups — including the Badger Trust, Humane Society International/UK, RSPCA, League Against Cruel Sports and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, among others — have all come out strongly opposing using badgers as scapegoats for a problem affecting cattle.

Concerns weren’t only raised about the cruelty inherent in shooting badgers and about the possibility of leaving many wounded to die slowly from their injuries, but also about whether or not it would even be effective.

According to one significant study, the Randomised Badger Culling Trial (RBCT), “badger culling can make no meaningful contribution to cattle TB control in Britain.” It also concluded that weak testing for cattle keep them contributing significantly to the problem and that, “Scientific findings indicate that the rising incidence of disease can be reversed, and geographical spread contained, by the rigid application of cattle-based control measures alone.”

Unfortunately, science wasn’t enough to stop the culls from starting. Last month, Natural England granted an eight-week extension to the cull in Gloustershire after marksmen failed to meet the their target goal of 70 percent of the population, but the whole thing was shut down after they failed to meet even the reduced goal during the extension.

The cull in Somerset also failed to meet its target, despite a three-week extension there. According to the Telegraph, Natural England said the cull was ended because there is “no realistic prospect of the cull removing the number of badgers required by the licence.”

While the cruelty and effectiveness were questioned to begin with, the failure to meet the target goal in the set time period raises serious questions about where all of these troublesome badgers are and about the governments ability to run these programs effectively and humanely.

Not only have millions been spent to senselessly kill hundreds of badgers, but many are now concerned that the badgers who were left will disperse and potentially spread the disease to new areas, while others will move in to fill their place, which will both cause more problems.

“I am much relieved the government’s badger cull fiasco is finally over, for the time being at least. We hope the government will now do the decent thing and admit that killing badgers to control TB in cattle is a ludicrous and inhumane idea,” Mark Jones, executive director of Humane Society International/UK, told the Guardian.

According to the League Against Cruel Sports, even though the culls have ended, the government is still planning on running them for the next three years and starting them in other areas. The organization also raised concerns about findings that the government is considering gassing them, even though that was banned in 1982 because it’s considered inhumane.

TAKE ACTION!

Please sign and share the petition urging the government to stop needlessly killing badgers and use common sense to deal with the spread of bTB.

Jack Reedy, Badger Trust: Cull “a shambles from start to finish”

ANIMAL activists have branded the badger cull in Gloucestershire a “fiasco” after it was called off three weeks early because too few animals have been killed to meet the terms of the licence.

Farming Minister George Eustice claimed the extension to the cull had been “worthwhile”.

It has not yet been revealed how many badgers have been killed during the extension period. The number is due to be announced by Defra on Monday – 2nd December.

England: Most Recent Live Animal Export Protests Given Additional Boost By Chris and ‘Shipping tv’.

England

ValCameron141113_7604 _1ValCameron091013_0009_6

Anti live export campaigners at the Port of Dover in South Eastern England have been given additional support and a further boost to their campaign actions via the help of Chris and his site which is called ‘Shipping TV’.

At the most recent export of live animals from Dover (UK) to Calais port in France on the evening of 18/11/2013, Chris came down and joined up with protestors against the live export trade which even in the UK, is largely undertaken and operated by Dutch exporters and hauliers.  Only one small truck out of the five seen that night were British; the rest being Dutch.

Chris interviewed Ian Birchall, the Chairman of KAALE www.kaale.org.uk  (and the organisation which Mark, SAV founder, is also the EU Correspondent for), regarding the export trade, and Chris obtained some excellent footage of the protests, the port and the livestock trucks arriving at the port.

Despite the time of the trucks arrival being around 2300hrs in the late evening, there were around 55+ protestors still at Dover port to voice their opposition to the trade; and to let the livestock drivers know how people feel about them.

You can see the video produced by Chris at  http://youtu.be/w_5aNFW8lQQ  and for all you ship spotters, you will find Chris’ site at ‘Shipping tv’ of great interest.  Please visit www.shippingtv.co.uk

We all thank Chris for his work to further give audience to the horrors of live animal exports.

Please watch the excellent video and crosspost to everyone you know.

Anti live animal export protests have been operating at Dover harbour since around 1988.  The campaign has over the years since seen a massive reduction in the number of live animals exported from the UK for slaughter in mainland Europe.  The ex cold war river barge, the (Dutch) ‘Joline’ (registered in Latvia), which is currently used to carry the trucks (and which is shown in the video) is the very last vessel to still take live animals to Europe for slaughter.  The effectiveness of the campaign can be shown in as much that Monday nights shipment of 4.5 trucks was the first seen in almost 2 weeks.

The campaign will continue until there are NO live animals being shipped to mainland Europe for slaughter.   In his interview, Ian from KAALE outlines the Chris the negative aspects of what this live trade is doing to UK business.

The campaign has continued since 1988; we the protestors and investigators are prepared to continue for however long it further takes.

Thanks for your help and support Chris.

USA: Illegal Mistreatment of Pigs By Southern Quality Meats, Inc. (SQM), a Pontotoc, Miss.

UNST0001

Mother pigs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed that illegal mistreatment of pigs took place inside Southern Quality Meats, Inc. (SQM), a Pontotoc, Miss., slaughterhouse, where a whistleblower took video footage showing pigs jabbed with electric prongs and other poor handling. One worker even put the prongs, which can carry an electric current, on one apparently stunned mother pig’s lower abdomen and/or genitals.

Newly released USDA records show that SQM had long been aware of its animal-handling problems and not only broke the law but also had trouble complying with the USDA’s directives once caught.

The Mississippi Department of Education has awarded contracts worth millions in taxpayer dollars to SQM to supply sausage to Mississippi schools. Federal funds subsidize the state’s school meal programs, too.

Please click the link below to watch the video and learn what you can do to help end this suffering.
