They’re trapped in the world’s saddest zoo

Dear Mark, It’s been called the “world’s saddest zoo,” and with good reason. Arctic foxes, beluga whales, walruses, a wolf and a polar bear are shut inside tiny, windowless, virtually barren rooms in the Grandview Mall in Guangzhou, China.

These animals are living in conditions so completely removed from their natural habitats that they represent one of the most distressing examples of animal deprivation I have ever seen.

The belugas swim in murky water. The foxes are malnourished and listless. And the polar bear sits silently day after day as shoppers stop to stare at and pose for selfies with him.

Please help us speak up for these poor animals!

Take action now to help close down this horror show and send its inhabitants to a sanctuary.

No animal should ever be exploited for entertainment, but the Grandview doesn’t even come close to meeting any internationally recognized standards. It is devastating to see these animals suffer helplessly with shoppers constantly banging on the glass of their exhibits.

HSI is supporting our Chinese partner groups in their petition to the governor of Guangdong and our friends at Animals Asia Foundation to try to help these animals in desperate need. We have already raised a complaint with a Chinese office, and now we need to add your voice to our call for swift and decisive action.

We can’t just leave these animals to languish endlessly.

Take Action 3

Please sign our petition to re-home them immediately to a more humane and appropriate setting.

Thank you for caring about animals.

Sincerely,

Andrew Rowan President and CEO Humane Society International

A bear sits alone in a pit in the utterly depressing Kaliningrad zoo for many years. The environment is not appropriate to the species it consists only of concrete. I fight for a couple months to find a organisation to help the bear out of this bad conditions. Nobody want to help me. I think the problem is that the bear is in Russia. Its not so easy to help him, but I never give up.

Unfortunately, the bear can not be reintroduced he is too long in captivity, but I hope I can find a sanctuary for him.

Please help me, please sign the petition. If enough people sign we can help the bear to start a new live in good conditions. The petition is aimed at ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), HSI (Human Society International) and Four Paws International Vienna. Please help sign and share the petition.

Thank s to Jane for sending this.

USA: Iris – Now Free After Years of Solitary Confinement.

USA1

Watch the video here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=96&v=OcsE9WKYW6A

Iris Was a Prisoner in Solitary Confinement for Years—Until Now

Imagine being confined in a dark, windowless cell that measures approximately 8 feet by 16 feet, roughly the size of a walk-in closet. Iris didn’t have to imagine it: That’s where the 32-year-old chimpanzee was found at Chestatee Wildlife Preserve & Zoo, a seedy roadside zoo in Georgia.

The cell was only cleaned about twice a week (contrary to instructions by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to clean it daily), so she often lived amid her own waste. Her meals were slid to her through a slot in the wall, as if she were an inmate at a high-security prison. The tiny cell had nothing for her to climb on, and she had no one to play with and essentially nothing to look at except four blank walls. The picture of abject despair, she was often found huddled under a filthy blanket in the unheated cell and smeared her own faeces on the cell walls.

Occasionally, Iris was allowed into a slightly larger concrete cell, but it was found scattered with feces and dead cockroaches, and spiders crawled among the cobwebs on the ceiling and walls.

After years of solitary confinement and deprivation, Iris was a sorry sight. She was pale and overweight, and her legs were underdeveloped, likely from a lack of opportunities to climb or exercise. She was missing her canine teeth, which likely had been pulled out to make her easier to handle.

But thanks to a generous PETA member, Iris has seen the last of this hell on Earth. Earlier this month, she was transported to the lush tropical Save the Chimps, an accredited sanctuary in Florida.

Just days after arriving at Save the Chimps, Iris was introduced to another rescued chimpanzee named Abdul, and they were immediately smitten with each other, panting and hooting with delight, exchanging kisses and hugs, and grooming each other like old friends. Normally, such introductions take months, but for Iris and Abdul, it was love at first sight. Iris continues to be introduced to more chimpanzees and will soon have the opportunity to live on a large island with plenty of trees and structures for climbing and playing.

PETA has filed legal complaints with several agencies and called on them to investigate Chestatee’s apparent violations of animal-protection and worker-safety laws.

What You Can Do

Boycott all zoos, even ones that misleadingly call themselves “preserves” or “parks.” Roadside zoos don’t have signs out front saying, “Caution: Abused Animals Within.” They are tourist traps that unwitting visitors keep open with their ticket purchases.

Nani Update January 2015.

Serbian Flag

On December 1 2014, the Enlargement Commission of the EU wrote to the Serbian Agriculture Minister regarding the situation of ‘Nani’ deer.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2014/12/01/serbia-england-eu-eu-enlargement-commission-now-writes-to-serbian-agriculture-minister-re-nani-deer-asking-for-dialogue-with-epar-and-sav-we-now-wait-to-see-what-happens/

More importantly, the Serbian Minister was informed by the EU:

As a candidate country to the EU, Serbia is encouraged to apply best EU practices, such as engaging in dialogue with stakeholders, including NGO’s.  For this reason, I would ask you to give this case your attention”.

As of 20/1/15, we can confirm that there has been no attempt whatsoever by the Serbian government to enter into any form of dialogue and correspondence with us and other internationally based NGO’s attempting to improve Serbian animal welfare.  The Serbian government sent a document instead to the EU, which we have reviewed and from which we find many errors.

A copy of the same Serbian ministry letter regarding Nani can be found via this link:

Document_10 (1)

Also, despite several NGO’s writing many times to the so-called ‘EU Ambassador to Serbia’ specifically regarding the situation of Nani deer; he, the EU Ambassador, has completely ignored every single effort we have made to establish contact.  We have been treated as if we do not exist.

There may be many valid reasons for this; only EU officials can answer this in detail.  As you can see from many of our posts over several recent years, the Serbian government is in our opinion so corrupt and its regional authorities often so very non-compliant with their own current and existing Serbian legislation; (certainly in the case of animal welfare), we can only assume that the government will not enter into dialogue with any NGO’s as it does not know how to respond to the endless questions and proofs of non-compliance with the law that we will question them with.

With fancy letters coming from Ministers aimed at the EU to keep everything looking good in the garden, the Serbian government are literally pulling a veil over the eyes of the EU Enlargement Commission by making fancy statements to make everything look good and true; but as NGO’s working within Serbia and with ‘ears and eyes to the ground’ on many, many national issues, it is probably best to say that the NGO’s know the real situation better than anyone.  And the reality is, the current situation is very far from even acceptable, let alone any better.

For example, has the EU Enlargement Commission ever asked the Serbian government agriculture minister about the following situation for example ? – something we exposed years ago, where animals killed were simply dumped off to the side of a highway – presenting a real attraction for stray animals looking for something to eat ! – we would ask about this and what action has been taken as a result if we ever had the chance to enter into dialogue with the government.  Maybe it is because of things like this and the difficult questions that would be asked of them, the Serbian government wishes to avoid us at all costs !

Or as another case, take this issue (below) at a Serbian farm, where NGO’s were informed by the government that everything was ‘ok’.  We were told ‘dont pressure us’ when we first drew attention to the issue shown here.

Dont pressure us !! – sorry but we assumed they were the government Agriculture Ministry who should be made aware, and act regarding things like this !!

Check out the following links for more photos and information:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2010/11/23/serbia-november-2010-conditions-ok-at-a-farm-according-to-serbian-veterinary-ministry-and-complaining-campaigners-dont-pressure-us/

At the time we were so very concerned about conditions; that we alerted CIWF here in England; asking them for a quote on what is seen (above).   As part of their response; Phil at CIWF provided the following:

It is clear beyond doubt that what is shown in these photographs does not comply with existing EU legislation, and consequently would impact Serbian accession to the EU. In the event of Serbia’s accession, these photographs could form the basis of a formal complaint to be made to the Legal Affairs Dept of the EU associated with animal welfare”.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2014/09/24/serbia-formal-charge-sent-to-serbian-government-regarding-those-who-profiteer-from-animal-suffering/

So where are we now ? – have these issues ever been resolved by the Serbian ‘dont pressure us’ Ministry ? – or are things like this still happening ?

If the Serbian government is ignoring the wishes of the EU Commission by refusing to enter into any dialogue with NGO’s, then we now have little option but to further disclose information regarding the current situation of Nani deer.

Basically; the government works to cover up issues, whilst we work to expose the realities.

As regular visitors to this site will be aware, and which you can see from past posts on this site, we have made many attempts over many recent months to get Nani returned to the Mitic family who will take care of her.  Instead, the government has decided that Nani should be imprisoned at Zoo Jagodina.

The government letter (link further above) seems to appear very formal; but what is the actual reality of what is being said ?

Is putting Nani into a zoo a simple way of the government hopefully closing the door on the entire issue rather than actually taking the actions that are really necessary for the welfare of the animal ? – could it be the very close relationship that government officials have with the hunters that prevents them from delving deeper into the realities of the case ?

It would appear from information that we have that the Minister was actually out killing male deer with hunters on the very day that Nani was taken from the Mitic family.  This being 1/8/14.   So, would the Minister take action against those he was out hunting deer with ? – probably not.

Nani has now been sent to a zoo; to be yet another exhibit for people to look at.

Here is a link to the zoo website:

http://www.zoovrtjagodina.rs/

It is interesting to read one of the statements in the letter –

Article 86 on … provides that wild animals can be kept in captivity for their own needs only if their well being is not compromised, or if their living conditions that are appropriate for the type, race, gender, age and the physical and biological characteristics, behavioral traits or animal health are provided; such wild animals shall necessarily be marked n the prescribed manner“.

The zoo declares:

our animals Zoo offers a variety of facilities, all of which constitute the basic animal. In what kind of objects located 250 animal species with over 320 copies, whether certain types of their intellect reaches the human species, in which some kind of special, how big calves on arrival into the world, how certain animals can withstand under water and many other interesting things You can find out if you should come with us and take a look at this marvellous animal world situated in Jagodina. Is this appropriate for the type of animal; and better than would have been provided by Mrs. Mitic at her home ?

nani zoo3

Please take a look at the photographs above and below that have been taken at the very same (Nani current) zoo during an information gathering visit made during 12/14.  We question if this is a “marvellous animal world”; but leave this for you to decide from the evidence we present.  Are the zoo conditions you see in these photos so much better than the conditions in which Nani would be kept by the Mitic family ? – No.  So we ask the question of rules and regulations only being applied when the government wants them to be; otherwise they are ignored.

We give an example of an illegal zoo further on in this post as an additional example of what we are saying.

“wild animals can be kept in captivity for their own needs only if their well being is not compromised”

Are people to assume that there is nothing wrong with the animals well being from the following pictures ?

Are we to assume that government ministries are ensuring that the welfare of the animals is paramount; just like they did NOT with  the animals kept in terrible conditions at ‘VUK’ zoo facility in Novi Pazar, Southern Serbia,? – see the following links and pictures for more proof

2 Photographs Below – Tiger and Bear living conditions at the illegal ‘VUK’ zoo facility in Novi Pazar.

  •

Does again the EU Enlargement Commission accept everything that the Serbian government puts before them; without raising a single question as per the wishes of animal welfare NGO’s ?

Finally, take a look at a post we issued a few years back regarding another Serbian zoo; ‘VUK’ zoo facility in Novi Pazar, Southern Serbia, from which the above photos were taken:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2011/07/27/serbia-270711-investigation-reveals-illegal-zoo-operating-and-a-minister-who-does-not-have-a-clue-about-things/

Quote by NGO’s at the time – “We (NGO’s) now have official confirmation from the Ministry of Environment, Mining and Spatial Planning that they undertook an inspection of the facility on 5th of July 2011, and that it was found that the owner of zoo park, one Mr. Ismail Redzepovic, from Novi Pazar, does not possess any documentation in relation to this facility being operated / kept as a zoo park“.

Would the Serbian government ministry have even looked into the issue if NGO’s had first not exposed that this zoo even existed ? – or were they fully aware of the wrongs but actually decided to do nothing until exposed ?

You have to ask; regarding Nani now being moved to a zoo, and the ‘behavioural’ conditions which are shown in the photographs; have things really changed much ? – are the ‘living’ conditions for wild animals at this zoo really adequate for their behavioural traits and good health ? – there hardly seems to be a lot in the way of ‘environmental conditions’ for natural behavioural traits to be shown.  In fact, environmental conditions such as basic plants and trees don’t even appear to exist for some of the animals within their facilities!

The Ministry take no action and obviously thus think this is acceptable.  Or are there other reasons ?

Do the EU Enlargement Commission and the EU Ambassador to Serbia really take any notice of the evidence that is presented to them by the NGO’s such as we are showing here ? – do they actually ask any questions to the government Ministry about all of this ?

From their actions and the clear lack of Serbian Ministry entry into dialogue with NGO’s to this present day, it would appear not.

We will continue to expose animal welfare wrongdoings whenever we are able.

The following photographs show animals at the zoo at which Nani deer is currently being held.

In their letter to the EU, the Serbian Minsistry declare:

Article 86 on … provides that wild animals can be kept in captivity for their own needs only if their well being is not compromised, or if their living conditions that are appropriate for the type, race, gender, age and the physical and biological characteristics, behavioral traits or animal health are provided; such wild animals shall necessarily be marked n the prescribed manner“.

The following pictures are all of conditions at Jagodina zoo – please see the lions, tigers, bear, Nani deer and giraffe photographs from the same zoo which are shown en bloc above.  We very much question the Ministry statement that:

“wild animals can be kept in captivity for their own needs only if their well being is not compromised, or if their living conditions that are appropriate for the type, race, gender, age and the physical and biological characteristics, behavioral traits or animal health are provided”

SAV Comment:  And they say that humans are the intelligent ones ! – Israeli air strikes have got a lot to answer for.

It’s a grim sight: twisted cages, starving lions, the bodies of dead monkeys.

The Al-Bisan recreational park in Jabalya, northern Gaza was caught in the recent crossfire between Israeli and Palestinian forces. It had a cafeteria, a soccer field, and carousels, most of which have been crushed by air strikes.

Yet the zoo and its beastly residents remain—at least some of them and likely not for long.

gaza2'jpg

The park’s chief veterinarian, Abu Sameer, told CNN that eight to 10 monkeys, a lion, a fox, and a gazelle were killed. Survivors include crocodiles, birds, monkeys, and lions. Many of them appear traumatized and haven’t eaten for 10 to 15 days.

According to Sameer, the three lions face the biggest challenge because the zoo can’t afford to buy meat to feed them.

gaza3

“We can’t get the animals out to clean the cages,” he said. “Many of them are getting sick because they are weak and it is dirty. But we don’t have any alternative places.”

The Hamas government built the zoo in 2008 to give locals a respite from the difficulties of living on the Gaza Strip. With 67 Israeli and 1,960 Palestinians killed in the current month-long conflict, Al-Bisan’s zoo animals only add to the casualties of war.

“You can see the cages for the animals are badly damaged,” zookeeper Farid al-Hissi told the AFP. “When you see it, it makes you sad because they are in a jail now.”

Ukraine: The People May Have Their Own Wars – But The Animals in Kharkiv Zoo Have Been Left To Starve To Death. The Crisis Is Not Their Making; Only Humans Do This !

ukraine

URGENT! Ukraine- Do Not Let Your Zoo Animals Starve to Death!!

Petition link:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/449/814/234/urgent-ukraine-do-not-let-your-zoo-animals-starve-to-death/?z00m=20861243

The conflict in Ukraine hasn’t just caused the suffering of its citizens — animals in Kharkiv Zoo have been left to starve to death.

UPDATE (MARCH 9)

The wildlife park asked Ukranian residents to help.

According to a Facebook page created shortly after the zoo’s plea, many heeded the call to action: An update on the Facebook group posted Saturday, on March 8, said the animals are OK for now.

“We just got back from the zoo- literally the entire city had brought bags and bags of food to donate: cabbage, bread, carrots, beets, greens, you name it!

The zoo staff was using tractors to haul the food around.  We spoke to the zoo director and she said they’d also received some cash donations,” the page announced.

——————————————————

Animals in a Ukrainian zoo have been left to die of starvation in the wake of the country’s political turmoil, it has been claimed.

The director of Kharkiv Zoo blamed Ukraine’s warring politicians for failing to provide funds, saying the zoo only have enough food to last until Monday, March 10.

To make a donation go here:  http://www.zoo.kharkov.ua/node/5712   http://www.zoo.kharkov.ua/

http://www.zoo.kharkov.ua/node/5712

Alexey Grigoriev is said to be “in tears” over the plight of the animals, and has pleaded with the prime minister for help.

“Our animals are not fighting for power, they do not share anyone’s political views, they just want to live,” said a statement by the zoo. “Without emergency measures, our completely innocent animals will start dying next week.”

A pregnant elephant was hungry and on the point of expiring from exhaustion, it was claimed. Local reports say funds earmarked for the zoo have been sent elsewhere.

A letter sent by the director Grigoriev to Ukraine’s prime minister said: “The Kharkiv zoo animals on the verge of starvation.” Suppliers have been providing food for free for three months but have now refused to provide more, he said, pleading with the government for immediate action.

The country – partially invaded by Russia last week – is also on the point of bankruptcy.

A local campaigner for the zoo, Olga Sitkovskaya, said: “I spoke to the director and, sorry for this detail, but this clever, strong adult man burst into tears of helplessness.”

The city allocates funds needed for maintaining the zoo, but Kiev redirects the money to some of its needs. As a result, the animals in the zoo, are in a catastrophic situation.

“Along with the whole country, our zoo is living through difficult and terrifying times,” said the zoo statement. By Monday, we will have nothing with which to feed the animals.”

The zoo dates from the 1890s and survived two world wars.

Do not allow, now, their lives to be lost!!

These animals are your responsibility, feed them!!

Dozens of people have been kiled in Ukraine since the fighting began there more than a fortnight ago. But Ukraine’s citizens aren’t the only ones suffering — the animals in at least one of the country’s zoos have been left to starve to death.

According to the director of Kharkiv Zoo, the conflict in Kiev has leached the city funds the zoo relies upon to care for and feed its animals. Though donations of food and money have temporarily allowed the animals to survive so far, activists say the funds are running out — and they need help from the government, fast.

Polar bears, lions, tigers and a pregnant elephant are among those in danger of suffering slow, painful deaths because of Ukraine’s leaders’ neglect.

Animals aren’t political. They have no idea about the turmoil that’s wracking their country. All they know is that they’re hungry — and if they don’t get help soon, they’ll die.

Ask the government to restore funding for the Kharkiv Zoo and save the animals who live there before it’s too late!

Great News – You Did It Again – The Baby Elephant Calves (from the wild) Have Been Stopped Going To A Chinese Zoo !

AA return to wild

You did it again folks ! – the elephant calves have been saved from the ordeal of spending their lives in a Chinese zoo.

Our recent post –

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2013/01/11/very-urgent-action-required-to-stop-elephant-calves-being-sent-to-hell-hole-zoos-in-china-please-act-immediately-to-prevent-this/

Dear Mark,

The five wild-caught elephant calves due to be sent from Zimbabwe to Chinese zoos have been saved from a life of misery. They have been sent to a national park in Zimbabwe to be rehabilitated back into the wild.

Thank you for playing your part in this story and helping to convince the Zimbabwe authorities that these elephants deserve to live in the wild, not in captivity.

Thank you for supporting this campaign.

Animal Welfare Director

PS: This victory is bittersweet, as sadly four wild-caught elephant calves arrived in China in November 2012. One of these has already died. Animals Asia, in partnership with Humane Society International, is offering advice and support to the zoos housing the remaining three elephants in the hope that we can improve their living conditions
