We ask for a thorough investigation into this atrocity. We ask that the veterinarian Cristian Pencu be suspended without pay, for the entire duration of the investigation. We ask for all tests done to determine that ALL THE DOGS at the shelter were contaminated with Distemper, be released to the media.

We ask for the resignation of the Deputy-Mayor, Florin Ghiorghita, who gave the order to KILL all dogs, based only on two handwritten pieces of paper given to him by the veterinarian.

We expect one of the most honest and severe investigation possible and we ask that all persons found guilty be punished in the most severe way, at the full extend of the law.

It is incomprehensible how those dogs who looked so well the day before their slaughter, have been deemed sick, incurable and killed without mercy.

We ask f or the punishment of the workers, who physically harassed the people and obstructed the Police, to be fired immediately, and charged in accordance with the law.

I shall boycott Romania until the animals will be treated properly and until Romania will implement the only successful program to reduce strays population, recommended by the WHO, Capture/Castrate/RETURN….and will implement and APPLY real laws for the protection of animals…

In deed, Romania is the land of death for the animals…

I try to understand WHY the animals have been killed OVER NIGHT…? And why the local association DID NOT KNOW about the distemper epidemic in the shelter,…and why the dogs where OK one day before…

I still hope that a HONEST, THOROUGH and OPEN investigation will take place and ALL those responsible for this hideous crime against innocent animals, will be punished.

We need European support to put pressure on this people for them to stop killing! 220 dogs were massacred last night in Botosani (Romania) at the order of the mayor Yesterday night over 200 dogs from Botosani (ROMANIA) public shelter were killed at the order of the mayor who based his overnight decision on the fact that an epidemic of Carre disease will start – because of the fact that some of the dogs in the shelter were sick.

The dogs were discovered this morning by the volunteers that feed them every day – in plastic bags with traces of blood everywhere. The dogs were not euthanised by injection but slaughtered. They called the TV stations and the police but nothing happened. They were in shock and tried to get out of the shelter the last few puppies that were alive. They were assaulted and offended by the guards.

Public shelters in Romania don’t have a quarantine zone and only the NGOs feed the dogs and offer medical services. The dogs are kept in improper conditions because the final goal is for them to die. Euthanasia is ILLEGAL in Romania but, because of political pressure, the local authorities euthanize dogs and try to hide it.

Ireland: Dozens of Celebrities Speak Out Regarding the IGB and China.

Please see below an article in today’s Irish Daily Mail in relation to the 37 Irish celebrities that have spoke out against plans by the Irish Greyhound Board’s proposed racing venture in China. ARAN would like to thank the work of Irish celebrity and singer, Sharon Shannon, for working hard to get the celebrities to speak out against the proposed plans. Click here for their letter in yesterday’s Irish Times. In an interview with the Irish Daily Mail yesterday, ARAN backed calls for the CEO of the IGB, Adrian Neilan, to step down as a matter of urgency in relation to him overseeing this wreck-less plan that in another way, has given more spotlight to the immense suffering and cruelty associated with greyhound racing than what any animal protection group could have asked for. One email to ARAN yesterday called it ‘An own goal‘.

YOU CAN STOP THE IGB PLANS, TAKE EFFECTIVE ACTION TODAY!

Email the CEO of the Irish Greyhound Board, Adrian Neilan, and ask him to step down as a matter of urgency for overseeing this wreck-less plan of greyhound racing in China — a country that has no human rights laws — let alone animal protection laws. However, we know that greyhounds from Ireland won’t be sent there now, but, the IGB want to oversee and run greyhound racing in China.

Romania: (Brasov) Profiteers are Planning the Mass Murder of Stray Dogs! – Please Take Action – See Below.

Profiteers are planning the mass murder of stray dogs!

Behind the back of the mayor of Brasov and together with several communities on the outskirts of Brasov, Flavius Barbulescu, director of SPGA in Brasov, founded a company to build a supra-regional detention camp for stray dogs. Hoping on the soon to be legalized mass euthanasia, this shelter with closed-circuit television monitoring and no public access, will be more like an extermination camp for stray dogs.  All this is done with the assistance of the Vice Mayor of Brasov, Adrian Gabor, who is in charge of the dogs in Brasov.

Flavius Barbulescu

Barbulescu is responsible for all dog catching activity in a 200 km radius around Brasov with more than 30.000 dogs killed exclusively in Brasov.

Adrian Gabor breaks his promise given to Princess Maja von Hohenzollern in 2009,  in which he agreed to neutering the dogs and not to kill them. In secrecy,  they prepare a massacre.

Please demand the mayor of Brasov to prevent and stop these plans, to remove the dog Killer Flavius Barbulescu from office and to remind the vice mayor of his promise.

The urban dog shelter in Brasov Stupin led by Flavius Barbulescu must be closed immediately and the control of dogs in Brasov must be transferred to the local animal welfare organizations.

This must not happen!!

Please demand of the Mayor of Brasov:

–  to revoke Flavius Barbulescu’s responsibility for the dogs

–  to remind the vice mayor of his pledge and to stop him

–  to immediately close the municipal dog pound of Brasov Stupin under the control of Flavius Barbulescu and to transfer the care and responsibility for the Brasov dogs to the local animal welfare organisations

UK Conservative Government Headed by David Cameron Blocks Circus Ban

After the highly publicized beating of Anne the elephant from Bobby Roberts’ Super Circus last month, a ban on using wild animals in British circuses looked very promising.

But now the government headed by David Cameron has done a complete turnaround and intends to block their support for a ban.

Despite repeated polls that show between 80 and 94 percent of the British public wants to end the use of wild animals in the three traveling circuses in the UK and despite promises of support from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), ministers are expected to announce their preference for “self-regulation by circuses.” 

The Independent said the move comes from the Prime Minister (David Cameron) who “wishes to reduce Government regulation.”

The Independent launched its own campaign calling for the Prime Minister to rethink the ban and announce a timetable to implement one.  More than 6,000 people signed their petition.

Amid widespread public disapproval, the number of circuses using wild animals has fallen steadily from 20 in 1997 to three today. They use more than 20 animals. The Great British Circus is touring with at least five tigers and two camels, and is breeding lions for future performances. Peter Jolly’s Circus has four pythons, a zebra, a camel and one horned African cattle called an ankole, while Circus Mondao has two zebras and two camels. All three circuses say their animals are well looked after, travel only short distances and are not harmed by their trainers.

A ban has the support of animal welfare organizations such as Animal Defenders International, Born Free, Captive Animals’ Protection Society, RSPCA and the British Veterinary Association, which represents 12,000 veterinarians.

The RSPCA reported the animals live in one quarter of the minimum space that is required in a zoo and their circus training, transportation and performance causes “damage to their mental wellbeing.”

Liz Tyson, director of the Captive Animals’ Protection Society, said:

“From an ethical standpoint, there is no justification for people to teach animals tricks or to force them to perform for our entertainment. We regularly get people saying to us: ‘I can’t believe this is still legal.’ People make the assumption that we have got the highest standards for animal welfare in the world but the reality is that we are falling behind – Bolivia introduced a ban on the use of all animals in circuses in 2009.”

The circuses countered by saying the animals are well cared for and they travel no more than 20 miles with the animals confined.  They report that it’s in their best “business” interest to look after them.
