Government recognises vegan diet as viable option for all Australians

Australia’s peak health body, the NH&MRC, has finally recognised that a vegan diet is a viable option for all Australians. Australia’s top health experts are now in agreement with those in the USA and Canada that well-planned vegan diets are safe and healthy for all age groups.

In the newly-released Australian Dietary Guidelines, plant-derived foods are given as alternatives to animal-derived foods, with meal planning advice accommodating vegan eating. In fact, the Guidelines state that alternatives to animal foods (such as nuts, seeds, legumes, beans and tofu) can, for all Australians, “increase dietary variety and can provide a valuable, affordable source of protein and other nutrients found in meats.”

Vegan Australia is pleased that government health experts are finally taking on board the large body of scientific evidence that a vegan diet is not only a viable option for people of any age (including babies and pregnant and breast feeding women) but that eating plant foods in favour of animal-derived foods can confer many health benefits, such as reduction in incidence of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and some types of cancer.

“This has been a long process and I am very happy that the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) has looked at all the evidence and at last presented Australians with the real option of choosing a vegan diet,” said Greg McFarlane, Chair of Vegan Australia.

Amanda Benham, Food Industry and Consumer Campaign Manager of Vegan Australia and an Accredited Practising Dietitian, said “This is fantastic news for all Australians who are interested in eating in a cruelty-free, healthy and eco-friendly way. The Guidelines and the new Australian Guide to Healthy Eating not only endorse a vegan eating pattern, but provide valuable information on how to plan healthy vegan eating patterns for people of any age or stage of life.”

Vegan Australia is a national organisation that aims to promote veganism to the broader Australian public. Vegan Australia envisions a world where all animals live free from human use and ownership.

Compassion is the foundation of Vegan Australia – compassion towards animals, people and the earth. Vegan Australia believes that the starting point for people to put this compassion into action is to become vegan and to encourage others to become vegan.

this time it’s not about dogs or cats that need to be rescued.

There is still a very important issue, which is close to our hearts: It’s about the horrible end of the slaughter animals after their miserable lives. (Don’t worry, on this email as well as the petition, no terrible photos are shown)

To protect the live stock from daily horror and cruelty during slaughter, we have launched an EU-petition and urge you to support it with your signature.

Dear Colleagues,

for some time now I have searched the usual internet sites (Zoopla, Rightmove etc.) for suitable accommodation for myself in the UK.

As some of you know I have lived and worked in the UK before (5 years, London) and it has been my wish to return eventually, for good.

But things are not as easy any more as they were when I first went there, with merely a suitcase. I now have an household to move, with animals.

And that seems to be the main problem. Whatever is in any way suitable for the 6 cats (outgoing) and 6 rabbits – quiet spot ideally, with no through roads – is usually advertised with “no pets” (, no children, no smoker, no DSS …). Or if allowed, then one cat tops.

Also, as I work from home, and am, technically speaking, independent as to the location, I rely on a good working internet connection: 32 MBit minimum stable.

Somehow both of these requirements cannot be gotten under one roof. And I really have searched up and down the UK ..

So, I have asked to send this around in hopes of someone maybe knowing someone .. it is really the last thing I can try.

Requirements are:

– House or flat (no of bedrooms is a difficult size information; here, in Germany, places are measured by sq meters. So, I now rent 65 sq m. It should not be below that)
– with kitchen, but otherwise unfurnished
– Rural location ideally, with garden (access) or open land next to the property
– Net connection: 32 Mbit min.
– Rent: up to GBP (£) 600 max. incl. Council tax/bills

I am a non-smoker, and fully employed (computer sector).

Petition brings down Turkish dolphin park.

In another victory for animal activists and sympathizers, a dolphin entertainment park in Turkey was shut down recently. (Hopefully, others around the world will suit.) The park was in Antalya’s Kaş, a small coastal town where tourism, fishing, diving and yachting are popular. (Considering all the water activities available it hardly seems necessary to keep dolphins captive there.)

A Change.org petition helped gather 20,000 signatures
against the dolphin park and this crowd sourcing of outcry played a role in the positive outcome for the dolphins. Increasingly, it seems people are aware the dolphins are intelligent creatures that need open space in order to be healthy. Caging them appears to strike many people on an instinctual nerve that such parks are actually dolphin abuse and no dolphins should be held captive to do tricks for crowds simply to make money for businesses.

According to the World Society for the Protection of Animals many wild dolphins die during attempts to capture them for the dolphin trade. Additionally, about half of those capture die within three months of being confined in swimming pools.Some are also used as meat for human consumption. Tragically, in other parts of the world such as Latin America the number of entertainment dolphin parks is reportedly growing.

Though it may look like dolphins at entertainment parks are having fun, they don’t normally do many of the tricks they are taught and only doing them for food rewards. Showing human audiences dolphins doing tricks is not educational. It is exploitation for profit. If those parks truly cared about dolphins they would not buy them from dolphin hunters that kill so many while trying to capture them. If they cared about them, they wouldn’t put them in such small enclosures, or any enclosures.

Paying to see dolphin shows only further motivates people to open more entertainment dolphin parks.

USA: National Rally to Protect America’s Wolves!

America’s wolves need you and so does The National Rally to Protect America’s Wolves! in Washington DC on Saturday, September 7, 2013.

By now you’ve likely heard about our Rally for Wolves in DC on Saturday, September 7, 2013. If not, you can find out about the Rally right now by clicking on the website link below.

We have reserved a beautiful and historic area adjacent to the Washington Monument, within sight of the South Lawn of the White House and the US Capitol building. The Rally currently has eighteen Rally Partners (listed at the bottom of the website), made up of small and large wolf and wildlife defender groups, and eight speakers including two native Americans from Minnesota.

A small team of grassroots wolf defenders came together to create this Rally in DC, in order to communicate to our nation’s leaders, to the media and to our fellow citizens that we the people have had enough of demonization, persecution and slaughter of vital and innocent wolves and other native wildlife. We’ve had enough of that in the United States. Enough.

We believe that it is time for decency, respect and co-existence, with wolves and all our precious native wildlife, to be the new American way. This positive message is the unifying theme of our Rally for wolves.

The best way for you to support this cause is to be there in Washington DC on September 7, 2013. Of course, not everyone can come. Please spread the word and invite those who can be there.
