Breaking – Armani To STOP Using REAL FUR !

Dear friend

We’re delighted to confirm that the world-renowned luxury brand Armani will leave out all real fur, including rabbit fur, from its collection starting from the fall/winter season 2016.  Armani committed to this policy after working with the Fur Free Alliance, an international coalition of animal protection organisations focussed on ending the fur trade. Mark Glover, Director of Respect for Animals says:

“No ifs, no buts: real fur is cruel and unnecessary.  A huge majority of consumers don’t want it and fashion doesn’t need it.  The UK banned fur farming on ethical grounds, recognising the inherent cruelty of the fur factory farm industry, so its clearly hypocritical for outlets to continue to sell real fur on British high streets.  We are delighted that such an influential brand in the fashion business as Armani will be going fur free and they join many other compassionate retailers in the UK.”

USA: Government Services Wasting Money On The Killing Of Endangered Wolves – Why Kill ???

UNST0001

red wolf

Dear Mark,

Unless the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) drastically changes direction, the critically endangered red wolf will go extinct in the wild in a matter of years.

After more than two decades of work restoring a population of approximately 110 red wolves to the wild, FWS has recently undermined this success through mismanagement. Today only about 50 red wolves survive in the wild, all within five counties northeastern North Carolina.

URGENT: Tell FWS to do its job and save these imperiled animals before it’s too late!

Recently, Defenders announced our withdrawal from the FWS-sponsored Red Wolf Recovery Team. The team was supposed to be the catalyst to spur red wolf recovery. But in reality, the team was not organized in a way that would allow it to succeed.

Here’s just one illustration of the problem. Recently, a member of the recovery team trapped a red wolf on their land and held it hostage for at least a day, while demanding a permit allowing him to kill wolves on his property. Ultimately, FWS retrieved the wolf, and it’s now being held in captivity. This is in the middle of breeding season – a time when every wolf is needed in the wild.

How can this team succeed when it has team members who are actively opposed to red wolf conservation? This hostility undermines red wolf recovery efforts at every turn!

Since red wolves were reintroduced to the wild in 1987, Defenders has gone to court multiple times to protect them and ensure their recovery in the wild. What has changed recently is that it’s now FWS that is undermining red wolf recovery.

URGENT: Tell FWS to act now and save these magnificent creatures!

Thanks for all your help.

Sincerely,

Ben Prater Director,

Southeast Program

—————————————–

Dear Mark,

Government snipers gunned down 20 wolves from a helicopter in Idaho last month — and now they want to start mowing down wolves in Oregon.

The Center for Biological Diversity is going to court to stop the killing. Our intervention comes just as the situation for wolves in the Northwest turns dire. Last week Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed a law ending state-level protections for wolves, stripping away one more layer of protection from these social, intelligent animals. And it’s not just Oregon’s 81 remaining wolves that are at stake, not by a long shot. Wildlife Services is the shadowy federal program that serves as the government’s contract killers of wildlife.

They show up when governors, powerful corporations and Big Ag call, slaughtering millions of animals a year, including wolves, bears, mountain lions, hawks and otters. They operate without accountability, behind a veil of secrecy — and we’re going to put a stop to it. To win this critical lawsuit we need your help with a donation to our Stop Wildlife Services Fund. Wildlife Services’ aerial snipers, neck traps and cyanide land mines are always ready to do the bidding of Oregon’s beef industry — despite new research that found killing wolves actually increases wolf-livestock conflicts. This indiscriminate killing makes no sense, and it has to end. It’s going to cost us dearly, but we’re committed. That’s why we need your contribution to our Stop Wildlife Services Fund. Our scientists, lawyers and activists will put your support straight to work.

I’m sickened by the tally from 2014 alone: Wildlife Services killed 322 gray wolves, 61,702 coyotes, 580 black bears, 305 mountain lions, 796 bobcats, 454 river otters, 2,930 foxes, 1,330 hawks and 22,496 beavers. Since 2001 they’ve spent more than $1 billion in taxpayers’ money to kill animals.

Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio says: “Wildlife Services is one of the most opaque and least accountable agencies that I know of in the federal government. They are a world unto themselves. And that’s a world we are not allowed to see into.”

You can help us today. Let’s shut down the Wildlife Services killing machine. For the wild,

Kierán Suckling

Serbia: Mass killing of stray dogs in Nis / Serbia – A Pathetic Government Not Complying With The Law. Inform Them and The EU NOW !

Serbian Flag

Serbia: Mass killing of stray dogs in Nis / Serbia

Activists trying to rescue dogs from the grip of death at JKP “Naš Dom” in Pozega, hardly a dog shelter, but rather a concentration camp for the poor stray dogs of Serbia, as referred to by many, and is the gruesome epitome of brutality towards animals not uncommon throughout Serbia. Read what the activists who are trying to rescue and re-home these beautiful animals have to say about this place where dogs are being tortured, starved, strangled, abused, and beaten to death, and incompetently sterilized.

Starving puppies are eating each other they are so desperate. The Pozega dog concentration camp JKP “Naš Dom”, as this pound has rightfully been called by animal lovers ever since their brutal treatment of stray dogs has been revealed, began its operations in March 2008. It was founded jointly by two cities – Uzice and Cacak, and seven municipalities gravitating towards Pozega, with capacities for 200 dogs.

Estimates are that since the beginning until this day over 7,500 dogs were put to death. They were tortured, killed with blunt objects, their dead bodies buried right next to river Djetinja. Nowadays, the corpses are being sent to Cuprija for cremation. These gruesome details are revealed by Dusica and Dragana, who are trying to help these dogs by alerting people through Facebook. There are plenty of disturbing distressing pictures, for instance, bloodstained dogs in cages. “Napredak”, a company from Ćuprija, won the tender for disposing of waste from JKP “Naš Dom” in Požega.

The dogs that are kept there are being starved to death, and those still alive are killed by injections without any prior sedation. In the first years, they were injected with liquid detergent to kill them. One of the many criminal charges against this pound was brought by their former employee who testified about the sadistic killing of dogs – as when puppies were killed in front of their mother, who was killed last – say the above mentioned activists.

The head in charge of this concentration camp is Svetlana Božinović, along with her staff, the exponent of Zoohigijena communal service, Zoran Đokovic, the director, and Milan Božović, the veterinarian, according to the activists.

Numerous criminal charges have been laid against them, at least 15, but until this day, there have been no criminal investigations. Furthermore, complaints have been lodged with the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture against the chief veterinary inspector Mrs. Mićović, for failing to respond to numerous charges laid against this pound.

The activists further claim that Mrs Mićović and the pound veterinarian Božović have close personal ties. Starving and distressed dogs kept in filthy conditions In addition to crimes of torturing and killing animals as defined in Article 5, Clause 1, Item 18, of the Animal Welfare Act, JKP “Naš Dom” is also being accused of financial crimes: until 2013, they did not issue any financial receipts in relation to the impounded dogs. Those we managed to pull out have not been chipped, although we paid for their chipping, as well as for rabies vaccination.

Conditions in cages and boxes are horrendous. There is no regular water or food. Puppies are kept together with large dogs often leading to fatal outcomes. Mating also occurs. The pound does not meet the regulations on shelters and pensions passed in 2012.

Witnesses have seen pound workers beat the dogs with clubs. Those we managed to pull out are traumatized, show fear when approached and have scars from beatings – say the activists. In their efforts to draw attention to this ongoing tragedy, the activists further say it is not known how much funding the pound is getting from local councils of the seven municipalities it operates in. We know the municipality of Uzice is paying 11,000 dinars for each dog the pound takes. They also fund sterilizations. Still, the pound management requests money from each person wishing to adopt a dog, or volunteers trying to pull them out, on account of sterilization.

They do not consent to sterilizations at other veterinary stations, while the receipts for procedures at their premises are issued subsequently – say the activists, adding that these procedures are carried out incompetently, often leading to septicaemia, while the incisions are closed with ordinary rope. The tragic circumstances of dogs impounded at JKP “Naš Dom” in Požega have also been described by the Italian association OIPA (http://www.oipa.org/italia/randagismo/appelli/serbia.html) who had arranged the adoption of a dog with acid burns.

Reporting from the pound, Svetlana Božinović-Lalić, a volunteer, is calling upon animal lovers to stay united in their efforts: Rescuing dogs from the concentration camp in Pozega, one is up against a sheer display of power and evil. Irena from “Košutnjak” was told to come early in the morning to get the dogs she made reservations and paid charges for, while my appointment was at 10 am. I then learned they had released to Irena three dogs of their choice, instead of the ones she had previously reserved and paid for. People from the pound had placed a table and chairs by the entrance in such a way that we would have to look out into the street through the fence bars. The dogs to be released to us were put into transporters. All except Svetlana, the manager, were wearing white coats, while a few puppies were running lose. As I went through the gate, the first thing they told me was that since they were suspecting an outbreak of rabies we were not allowed to go inside where the dogs were. Furthermore, they said that under the circumstances, releasing of dogs was against the law and should not go ahead. In the end, they released 12 dogs to me, without answering my questions about other dogs I was interested in. The only information I got was that the skinny dog I enquired about was no longer alive. At that moment, Andrijana Kozić and a few others arrived. Andrijana, of course, was not allowed to g in, so Ruza took charge of four dogs that were being released. From that moment on, things turned completely insane. A few of us, who came to pull out the dogs, stood helplessly by the gate asking them to release those we had already made reservations for. The pound workers then withdrew into the office building and called the police! Four local policemen showed up, exchanged greeting with the pound workers and kept us waiting there for two whole hours. We voluntarily gave them our identification papers. Talking to the police, we learned that one of them had already called the pound many times to come and get a pack of hungry dogs who were attacking his chickens. We suggested to him to feed the dogs and offered help. We also offered to separate the pack and transfer dogs to several different locations to break up the strong bonds and the resulting aggressive behaviour. We also offered help with food. I personally asked the policeman to let me have a copy of the official notification of rabies which the pound failed to provide. He answered it was not his job to do so. In the meantime, the pound workers started leaving the premises one by one – first Mr Bozic senior, the self proclaimed all mighty. Then Svetlana, and all the others followed except for a watchman who stayed behind. Rade Radovanovic called the chief state inspector to come requesting she first contact the pound and order the release of at least the dogs we had made reservations for. But, once the workers leave the premises, as they well knew, any visit by the inspector would be meaningless. After some three hours of standing there in the hope that we would be able to save at least one more life, we had to leave. It was 30 degrees outside and the dogs were sitting in their cages in the van. Two Facebook groups support the struggle against the brutal treatment of stray dogs in Serbia. To whom it might concern,

We strongly condemn  JKP “ Naš Dom” Pozega  for their behaviour  in terms of treatment of abandoned animals. The Animal Welfare Act in Serbia clearly stipulates that abandoned animals cannot be killed except in exceptional circumstances, but must be housed and cared for in the shelters, yet we learned that JKP “ Naš Dom” is  planning to kill 90% of the dogs that  they catch in 2016.

On the news tonight (16.03.2016 ),  on the TV station  B92, JKP “ Naš Dom”  admitted that in year  2015  out of 1350  captured dogs,  1280 were killed!

We are outraged and appalled by such disrespect of the current law by an institution  JKP “ Naš Dom”  which is governed by the state! This institution,  clearly  feels they’re above the law!  We will be notifying all competent authorities in the EU and beyond and will be looking into taking measures to prevent future illegal slaughter of animals in Serbia.

We also must add that we are aware of current lynch on street dogs in Nis which is almost announced publicly as form of revenge for the attack  carried out on an elderly woman by a pack of dogs. We are also aware of all the unlawful poisonings and killings of animals which are happening in Serbia  because the  institutions governed by the state assigned to deal with the problem   are not following the laws and therefore are failing to deal with the problem  as well as not dealing with irresponsible owners  who abandon their  animals and are part of the problem.

So far we have pointed out how to humanely solve the problem of abandoned animals and for us it is devastating that Serbia does not actually apply these measures. Measures, which are prescribed by the Law.

We are disgusted with the way the law in Serbia is circumvented and we will be taking all measures in our power to stop the planned killing of 1300 animals  by JKP “ Naš Dom” in 2016.

Sincerely,

YOUR NAME and Nationality.

Lack Of Support Throws Whole Future Of Site Into Question.

14/3/16 – See text below.

Unless there is more action, this site is now closed until further notice.

Rather than just keep asking for donations / money, we need to see Serbian shelters and activists come together and put pressure on the Serbian government.  Make the government comply with the laws of Serbia, by supplying food to animals in shelter, not killing them.  Most importantly, we need to see a clear national sterilisation programme (using EU money) instead of the current illegal catch and kill strategy adopted by the government and authorities.

When people start to see things change, then they may consider giving more donationsThe current situation cannot remain a bottomless barrel that money is put into with no visible return or actions.

Well after such a very good start, the petition has nose dived.

12728918_976851822397309_1090523937518444929_n

It simply says to us that there is not really much in the way of trying to do anything, such as a petition; if people are going to just sign it and then do nothing more.

1074791_944847358931089_2464695890687572665_o (2)

Petitions need to be crossposted to as many supporters as can be contacted – friends, family, other ‘ar’ contacts etc.

To get nothing in the way of one signature in the last 24 hours or more is, well, a humiliation.

1

There is no point making efforts to get petitions created if people are not going to give them support.  Take a look at the pictures – ask yourselves, is this not worthy of something more than just signing a petition and doing nothing more ? – how many people have written a letter ?     – we gave contact details and even did a sample letter.

What do you want us to do ? – the whole bloody thing so that others do not even need to get involved !!

Annoyed ?

– more than.

Animal welfare campaigners ?

– I leave you to decide on that.

Future actions and the continuation of the SAV site ?

– debateable.

USA: Tilikum, SeaWorld’s Notorious Killer Whale, Is Near Death.

USA1dolphin capture

SAV Comment – At least in death, sadly Tilikum will be ‘free’ from the years of suffering, and hopefully will have a new life somewhere swimming fine and free ! – anything that can reduce the profits of abuse establishments is good news to us – SeaWorld just don’t get the message sent by most sensible people !

http://www.takepart.com/article/2016/03/08/seaworlds-infamous-killer-whale-near-death?cmpid=tpdaily-eml-2016-03-08-Horizon

Tilikum, SeaWorld’s Notorious Killer Whale,

Is Near Death

The 35-year-old orca, taken from his mother at the age of two, killed three people during his years of captivity, galvanizing animal activists against the company.

The great and fearsome Tilikum, the world’s most famous killer whale, is near the end of his tragedy-filled life.

On Tuesday, SeaWorld Orlando in Florida, where Tilikum has lived for the past 23 years, issued a statement announcing that the 12,000-pound orca is suffering from an untreatable lung infection.

The killer whale gained global notoriety in February 2010 when he dragged trainer Dawn Brancheau into his pool and brutally rammed her to death. She was the third person killed by Tilikum.

“We are saddened to report that over the past few weeks, Tilikum’s behavior has become increasingly lethargic, and the SeaWorld veterinary and animal care teams are concerned that his health is beginning to deteriorate,” the statement said.

“Our teams are treating him with care and medication for what we believe is a bacterial infection in his lungs,” the statement continued. “However, the suspected bacteria is very resistant to treatment and a cure for his illness has not been found.”

In a video released with the statement, SeaWorld veterinarian Scott Gearhart, teary-eyed, addressed the camera.

“I wish I could say I was tremendously optimistic about Tilikum and his future, but he has a disease which is chronic and progressive and at some point might cause his death,” Gearhart said. “We have not found a cure for this disease at this point.”

Heather Murphy, an anti-captivity activist from central Florida and cofounder of Ocean Advocate News, went to see Tilikum on Tuesday.

“He was in the med pool, and he was barely moving,” Murphy said. “The entire time I was there, he stayed at the gate looking out. There were other whales hanging out at the gate with him on the other side. It’s all very sad.”

Tilikum is thought to be about 35. The average life expectancy for wild male orcas is about 30. He was captured and taken from his mother’s side off the coast of Iceland in 1983, when he was about two.

Brancheau’s death led to an international outcry against killer whale captivity, sparked a six-month investigation by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and led to a protracted legal battle in which SeaWorld unsuccessfully tried to have the worker-safety violation overturned.

Since then, Tilikum and SeaWorld have been the subject of my book, Death at SeaWorld, the 2013 documentary Blackfish, and a cascade of devastating publicity that resulted in tanking stock values, high-level-staff departures, and the introduction of a bill to ban orca captivity in California.

Brancheau was not the first person to fall victim to Tilikum’s fury. In 1991, when the orca was living at the now-defunct SeaLand of the Pacific in Victoria, British Columbia, he pulled trainer Keltie Byrne into the water and, along with two female orcas in the pool, prevented the champion swimmer from escaping until she drowned.

RELATED: Death at SeaWorld: Inside the Abduction of Tilikum, the Whale That’s Killed Three Times

The whale was sold to SeaWorld Orlando in 1992. Seven years later, a homeless man named Daniel Dukes was found naked, dead, and draped over Tilikum’s back after sneaking into his pool after the park closed.

Becca Bides, SeaWorld director of corporate communications, declined to answer several email questions about Tilikum, including the type of bacteria that has infected him, whether or not he is eating, and how long he might have to live.

In the video, Gearhart said that Tilikum is infected with “a type of bacteria that is found in a variety of species, including wild cetaceans,” without naming the pathogen. “If Tilikum had shown up with this disease in the wild, he would’ve been gone a long time ago.”

But Naomi Rose, a killer whale expert and marine-mammal scientist at the Animal Welfare Institute, took issue with that statement.

“Talk about speculation and going way beyond the data,” Rose said. “You don’t know if he would’ve had this disease in the wild—it’s nonsensical. SeaWorld is trying to say, ‘Look how long we kept him around.’ But how do you know he would be in this predicament if he wasn’t in captivity?”

Rose said that wild whales die from bacterial infections, but without disclosing the pathogen affecting Tilikum, Gearhart’s statement “is absolutely meaningless.”

Lori Marino, executive director of the Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy and a neurobiologist who has studied whales and dolphins for 25 years, said the stress of being held in a tank for most of his life could have led to Tilikum’s illness.

“There is a well-known syndrome of how chronic stress affects the immune system and how that leads to infection and mortality,” Marino said. “Chronic stress, including depression, essentially releases chronic stress hormones into the body, degrading the immune system, which leads to increased vulnerability to infection.”

We may never know what will kill Tilikum. SeaWorld is not required to release necropsy reports for its animals.

But the orca’s legacy will outlive the animal.

“We knew this was coming, but that doesn’t make this any easier,” Marino said. “It’s a sad ending to a sad story.”

In order that we have an effect, please copy and send the letter to the 3 mails provided – please make sure you add your name and nationality at the end of the letter where indicated.

Thank you; and thanks to Venus for producing.

To Mr. Jean Claude Juncker – President of the European Commission.

Mr. Donald Tusk – President of the European Council

Mr. Martin Schultz – President of the European Parliament.

Dear Sirs,

About 5 years ago, EU and non EU citizens have expressed a wish with the unprecedented number of 1.3 million signatures. This action went down in history of democratic participation.

These citizens then demanded a limit of animal transport to 8 hours, and so was named this campaign “8hours campaign” against the agonizing, unlimited journeys of animals through Europe to their slaughter. Today these same citizens are more than ever disappointed by the ignorance and contempt by the EU Commission.

Disappointed because the European Commission has still opted for the lucrative and not for the animal friendly transport of animals. These still take days and are painful.

Disappointed because is still flowing blood from the trucks on the highway, the blood of animals, who are carted unnecessary for days, thirsty, starving, injured, half dead to whole Europe, although this is against the EU-Transport laws .

Disappointed because these “citizens’ initiatives” are systematically ignored from the European Commission, although they belong to the participation in the legislation in the EU after the Lisbon Treaty.

This disappointment has already reached the limit of anger within the EU countries. Because it is not just only an issue of animal rights. It is the betrayal of the European Commission on its citizens. It is the rejection of the European Commission to respect the decisions of their citizens who want nothing other than to improve an outdated Animal Transport Regulation.

This anger will reveal its first consequences in UK in the referendum. The power of the Internet is very large, you know better than we do. We can reach a lot of people, educate them, and eventually convince them. For or against EU. But which side are you on?

ADD YOUR NAME and Nationality.
