Yet Seongnam, South Korea is responsible for the horrendous torture and killing of dogs and cats. The largest market in South Korea that sells dogs both dead and alive for meat is the infamous “Moran Market” in Seongnam in Gyeonggi-do province.

It is estimated that one third of all dog meat consumed in South Korea(2.5 million dogs each year) are distributed through this market. If you have ever wondered what a hell would be like, just take a visit or watch the videos on the Moran Market. This place is a “Hell on Earth” with helpless dogs in cages after cages waiting for the uncaring customers to order them to be slaughtered on the spot by electrocution, hanging, beating, and then thrown into boiling water sometimes while they are still alive. Dogs are being killed in full view of other terrified dogs in cages, in public and in broad daylight.

Millions of dogs tortured all their lives in unimaginable misery and agony in dog farms around the country come to meet their tragic and frightening ends at this market. Also, many abandoned and stolen former pets end up in this market.

Dear Mayor Steve Hogan and Members of the Aurora City Council:

Please watch undercover video from the Moran Market in Seongnam, South Korea: http://youtu.be/UKSGgsjnJlY

The city of Aurora should not be a sister city to any city that allows dogs and cats to be tortured and eaten. Please urge the Seongnam Mayor Jae-Myung Lee and Gyeonggi-do Governor Kyung-Pil Nam to close down Moran Dog Meat Market and all other illegal dog farms and slaughterhouses, markets, truckers and restaurants who serve their products. An online petition calling for your support in ending the horrendous South Korean dog and meat trade can be found at:https://www.change.org/p/steven-hogan-stop-the-brutal-dog-and-cat-meat-trade-in-south-korea

Netherlands / France: EoA (NL) Write To French Authorities Regarding Terrible Animal Suffering Resulting From Overturned Pig Transporter on 4/3/15.

FRAN0001

The following is a letter sent to the French authorities by our good friend Lesley at Eyes on Animals; regarding a French pig transporter which overturned a few weeks ago.  We did not know about this in the UK, but it obviously made news in mainland Europe.  We feel the need to show you what has been written by Lesley.

You will also see a link to the video of the accident and the suffering animals; which are the subject of Lesley’s letter.

Lesley takes up the issue from here:

————————————————–

I am sending this out today to the gendarmes and official vets in France, related to the clean-up of the pig truck accident a few weeks ago there.
I have added all the logos.

Let´s keep our fingers crossed for a response.

If I do, I will let you all know.

Bises en bon weekend

The original letter in French which Lesley sent to the authorities.

French letter to French vets and gendarmes about pig truck accident (1)

Below is a translation (Google Translate) of what the letter says.

 ———————————————-

Dear ……

Your services were responsible for monitoring of an accident involving a pig transport truck rolled on its side at 6:30 am on March 4 in Britain. Shocking video of this accident circulated on social networks throughout Europe. This film is visible on the following link:

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10153083392119757&fref=nf

We are writing on behalf of animal protection organizations in Europe. We discussed

the pictures with transport companies of animals and we want to express our astonishment and vis-à-vis concern the method used to support the rugged truck and clean up, hoping it would not happen again.

When an accident occurs and which involves a vehicle transporting live animals, driver of the truck and the animals are cared for first. In the case of this accident, the driver was taken to hospital, but animals were still inside the truck injured when a crane was sent there. This raised the truck and handed over its wheels with injured pigs and struggling inside. Video images show pigs suspended the 3rd level of the truck (4 meters high!), with their hind legs trapped inside the compartment and front legs struggling in the void, struggling to reach the soil.

Some pigs were crushed under the weight of other conspecifics stacked above them. These pigs had been extremely traumatized and too long; we can then wonder why their suffering was extended by new injuries and a state of Panic?

The best method would be to unload pigs as soon as the driver had been taken to hospital, saving animals to await the arrival of the crane and still be inside the truck when it was back on its wheels.

We talked with experts who are management of truck accidents transporting live animals. They tell us that in the formations, it is specified that the truck drivers, accident, must be emptied of all its animals. These must then be gathered to protect them from further accidents. Animals injured and suffering should be immediately euthanized. After this step, the truck can then be back on its wheels. In the case of this accident, the truck roof should have been open immediately to allow the release of pigs, its collection and treatment before the crane is used to straighten the vehicle.

Can a particular reason to explain the procedure followed in this accident?

No doubt you are also shocked as we are by this accident, regret them decisions taken and would improve in the future support of this type transportation accident?

We are aware that an accident involving live animals is a complicated event manage and that there is no ideal solutions.

However, expertise and skills that can improve the efficiency of the management  Load exist. We would be happy to help you benefit from this experience in you proposing to organize a seminar to establish a synergy between your expertise field and specific external expertise.

Thank you for your understanding and awaiting your reply

Please accept, Madam, the expression of our respectful greetings.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear President,

Dear Excellencies,

Dear Ministers,
Dear Ambassadeurs,
Mrs. Mr.
And to whom it may concern :

We, Citizens of Europe and of the world, are writing for expressing our indignation about the barbaric sacrifices in Nepal.

Today, more than ever because of global warming and the degradation of the planet, we must watch over it. This moral problem concerns all inhabitants of the planet!

Nepalis say that the sacrifices of Ghadimai occur every 5 years, Certainly, but simply in the name of a popular and superstitious belief, millions of animals must be fed before their horrific sacrifice. We know that intensive farming is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in general.

We respect Nepal and its traditions but Nepal must respect the planet that belongs to everyone.

Today the planet demands our attention because we ask him more than it can deliver.

We inform you that we will not visit Nepal, as long as these unworthy atrocities will continue! We live in 2015, not in pre-historic era!

Thank you to read the rest of this letter:

Please read this email, have a look at the pictures and video’s.

Can you, as a human being, tell me this is right ?

All this horrible suffering ?

As you may be aware, this year’s Khokana Festival was held on 12th August (the day after Gai Jatra). We wait for confirmation from AWNN about the goat sacrifice – whether it will take place, what action is being taken to prevent it, etc. In the meantime, there are numerous other rituals taking place in Nepal involving gratuitous cruelty to animals which are largely unreported. Here are just a few:-

1. The ritual of tearing the heart out of a live piglet at a Newari Festival: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fToJo3CWhr8

2. Sacrifice of a goat at Nuwakot Durbar Square. A priest drinks blood from the dying goat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vxOCrNSdTU

3. The annual sacrifice of buffaloes and goats in Achham during November. The buffaloes suffer a long and agonizing death as they are hacked to death. Villagers believe that the more often “devotees” bite and hack at the buffaloes, the more satisfied the goddess Barbadevi Mai will be.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vxOCrNSdTU

Khokana Festival’ Day… the day that a 5-6 month old goat is thrown in a pond close to Rudrayani temple in Khokana, a village in the south of Kathmandu Valley, following which nine young men will enter the pond and then start to …tear the goat apart by grasping its legs, ears, hoof or tail. The one who manages to kill the goat is the ‘hero’ and will lead the Shinkali dance which is held afterwards.

Please see video, at:

http://www.occupyforanimals.net/the-goats-of-khokana.html

http://www.occupyforanimals.net/gadhimai-festival-in-nepal.html

Khokana residents have witnessed the barbaric scene year in, year out, and think it provides religious merit.

It is not clear why and when the cruel goat-killing was introduced. Locals believe that when children started to drown in the pond in the 12th century, residents started to drown a live goat to appease the gods. However, there is evidence showing that devotees in former times offered fruits and flowers in the temple and that the act with the struggling goat was introduced to create a spectacle.

Despite the attempts of AWNN (Animal Welfare Network Nepal) and the village anti-sacrifice group to stop the goat sacrifice, it looks as though it will take place yet again today, 12th August (the day after Gai Jatra).

ON ANIMAL SACRIFICE IN NEPAL

First off: Animal sacrifice is the ritual killing of an animal as part of a religion. It is practised by many religions as a means of appeasing a god or gods or changing the course of nature. Animal sacrifice has turned up in almost all cultures, from the Hebrews to the Greeks and Romans and from the Aztecs to the Hindus and is still practiced today.

Remnants of ancient rituals of animal sacrifice are apparent in many cultures, for example the Spanish bullfights, or kapparos in Judaism, or ritual slaughter procedures like shechita or ḏabīḥah in Judaism and Islam, respectively and many other forms.

IN NEPAL, animal sacrifice is part of various ‘puja’ ritual offerings performed when Hindus worship idols. Animals are killed to get once wish fulfilled, to sanctify weddings, new homes or religious festivals.  Upon purchasing a new car or truck, the owner sometimes splashes its exterior with fresh animal blood, to ensure the vehicle doesn’t crash whenever it is driven.
For certain groups ‘puja’ is merely symbolic — an offering of fruits, vegetables, butter, yogurt, money or flowers. For others ‘puja’ must involve animal blood. This death to please the gods is also interpreted as doing the animal a favour by releasing it from a life of suffering.

Sacrifices are performed as a mass bloodletting, such as during the Durga Puja festival when, once a year, soldiers in the centre of Kathmandu decapitate hundreds of water buffalos and goats — trying to dispatch each with a single stroke. During Nepal’s largest festival, the Dasain feast in early autumn, up to 10,000 goats and other animals are slaughtered. Among sacrificial animals are water buffaloes, male goats, lamb, sheep, chicken, ducks, birds, snakes and pigs. Contrary to what people tend to belief, sacrifice causes great distress and suffering to the animals involved.

In the next video:

Animal sacrifice in Bhaktapur Square, Kathmandu, Nepal. Argued as a mainstream part of Nepali culture and Hindu culture. The ceremony in fact does ask for animal’s agreement to sacrifice – through man’s interpretation anyway – with signal that animal shakes its head!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok_Aov4Nnyg

The world’s goriest mass killing of animals – the Gadhimai Festival – which is an unparalleled religious madness during which a few hundred thousands buffaloes, pigs, goats,  pigeons, rabbits and chickens will be killed as part of the blood-soaked festival held every five years (November 24, 25) to honour the Hindu goddess of power.

There have been protest against this mass animal slaughtering in Nepal and all over the world, but despite all the protests, the festival and the slaughtering of animals went on in 2009 festival and is expected to be ‘celebrated’ again.

Around 250.000 animals were slaughtered, including the young ones of the animals.

THE ANIMAL SACRIFICE CALENDAR OF NEPAL

In Nepal there is not much respite for animals destined to be sacrificed. Here is a summary of sacrificial events held in Nepal throughout the year (courtesy of Stop Animal Sacrifice).

January

Maghesakrati – This festival celebrates the first day of the Nepali month Magha (Mid January) when Winter ends and Summer is heralded. Thousands of Hindu devotees dip in the river. In Talukchandani village in Nuwakot district fights between oxens are organized. Although the oxens are not made to fight till death they often get badly injured. No arrangements for medical treatment are made. In the 2008 fight one of the oxens received a deep wound while the other fractured its leg.

February
N/A

March
Blood drinking festival – Early March the first in a series of yak blood drinking festivals is organized in Nangi, Myagdi district. In April/May and June/July similar happenings take place in lower Mustang. During the event the jugular veins of yaks are pierced and blood is collected in cups. Hundreds of people buy the blood, believed to have medicinal qualities. The yaks recover but it is a stressful event for the animals.
Chaite Dasain – This festival is also called ‘small Dasain’ as it lasts only for 2 days while Dasain in September/October lasts for 9 days. Animal sacrifices, especially of water buffaloes and goats, are an important feature of the festival. Blood sacrifices are carried out in Durga temples across the country. Both during Dasain and Chaite Dasain the Nepal army conducts sacrifices at Hanuman Dhoka palace in Kathmanduand the guardhouse in Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

April
Godhe Jatra – During the Horse Festival a grand horse parade takes place at Tundikhel, in the heart of Kathmandu. Another event takes place in Bal Kumari area in Patan where a horse is intoxicated with spirits. An equally drunk person in a traditional Newari attire rides it. People shout to frighten and enrage the animal until it runs madly with the rider clinging to it.
Bisket Jatra/New Year – During Bisket for seven days chariots representing Bhairava and Goddess Bhadrakali are pulled through Bhaktapur. On the 3rd day panch bali (five animals) involves the sacrifice of a chicken, duck, goat, sheep and buffalo. On the 4th day the government sends state offerings: 2 sacrificial goats. On New Year day farmers sacrifice female chicken that have not yet laid eggs.

May
Budha Jyanti/Rana Kul Puja – The Nepali month Jyestha (May/June) is the month for Newar and Rana clan pujas which involve the sacrifice of countless goats and ducks. The Rana clan puja is held on Buddha’s birthday and sees the killing of hundreds of goats.
Panauti festival – Panauti is located 30 km outside of Kathmandu. Its festival is apalanquin and chariot festival. The 9 day festival starts in Jyestha (May-June) and ends in Ashad (June-July). On the 5th day Panauti residents sacrifice male goats and ducks

June
Navadurga/Bhagasti –The nine goddesses or Nava Durga are worshipped with masked dances which begin in Dashain in October and end in Bhagasti in June. Countless animals are sacrificed during rituals accompanying the dances. The dancers get intoxicated on the fresh blood spewing from the necks of dying animals as well as alcohol. The animals who are killed in the presence of the public and whose blood is drank include goats, ducks and buffaloes.

Some of the extreme forms of cruelty in the Tantric rituals include the removal of the heart of a live piglet, the biting off of the head of a cock (see September) and the eating of blood-stained offerings.

The dances are also performed in the major places of Kathmandu Valley and Kavre district. In Lalitpur district the dances are organized in Patan and villages such as Pharping, Khokana, Harasiddhi. In Kathmandu district the dances are performed in Sankhu and Pharping. The number of animal sacrifices varies from place to place. Moderately wealthy families may offer panchabali (five species of animals). Elaborate sacrifices takes place in Theco, Khokana and Jala, more than fifty ducks and twenty-five goats are offered in just one of the rituals.

August
Khokana festival – Khokana festival is held every year in August, the day after Gai Jatra. A 5-6 month old live goat is thrown in a pond close to Rudrayani temple in Khokana, a village in the south of Kathmandu Valley. Nine young men enter the pond and start to tear the goat apart by grasping its legs, ears, hoof or tail. The one who manages to kill the goat is the ‘hero’ and leads the Shinkali dance which is held afterwards.

September
Dasain – Dasain festivals is Nepal’s largest festivals which is celebrated during the month of Kartik (late September and early October). During the Dashain festivals (Dasain and Chaite Dasain – see March), priests perform various Tantric rituals to Goddess Durga Bhawani, and the Living Goddess Kumari. Dasain sees the greatest numbers of animals sacrificed. During Kalrati, in Taleju Temple, the government publicly beheads 54 buffaloes and 54 he-goats, followed by the killing of 108 buffaloes by the Nepal Army. The event draws many devotees and is screened on national Television. At the same time in the palace in Gurkha 108 buffaloes are being beheaded. This marks the start of mass sacrifice by the people across the country; it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of goats are being sacrificed during Dasain as well as an unknown number of buffaloes, ducks, chicken, birds, etc.

Dasain Bhaktapur – At Taleju temple in Bhaktapur 25 buffaloes and some 20 goats are killed by cutting their throats and spilling blood over all the images. Only then they are beheaded. The temple area is soaked with blood. The heads of the animals are displayed around the image of Taleju.

During the Navadurga dances, on the ninth day of Dasain, people feed a water buffalo drunk on rice beer. The staggering animal is chase by a crowd of people it to Brahmayani where nine Goddesses are installed at the night. The priest performs a Tantric worship to sacrifice the drunk buffalo believed to be possessed by a demon called Mahi-sa-shur. The nine Navadurga dancers receive a fountain of blood in their mouth directly from the vein of the buffalo.

In one ritual a dancer bites off the head of a cockrel and drinks the blood that spews out.

Another ritual is the chasing of a sacrificial pig, stolen by groups of young men and boys. The youngsters run around carrying the squeaking pig under their jackets and passing it quickly from one to the other. The animal is released after two hours after which a dancer grabs it. He tears the heart of the live baby pig out after which it is eaten raw. As the dancers are forbidden to use knives or instruments the lead dancer tears the skin under the piglet’s forelegs with his fingernails, insert his hand and pulls out the heart. The dancers drink blood from the piglet’s open chest.

(See September)

November
Indrayani – This festival is held during the new moon night at the Indrayani temple at Swayambhunath. During the previous night three buffaloes are slaughtered in the temple. The first buffalo’s throat is cut and its blood sprayed all over the temple and the goddess images. The other animals’ heads are cut off. The head, heart and lungs of one buffalo are burned in the sacred fire. Climax of the festival is the sacrifice of a pair of live snakes by throwing them into a sacrificial fire. Apart from snakes pairs of live sparrows, grasshoppers and fishes are burned alive while others are released by throwing them into the air. Serpent sacrifices are known from three other places inNepal.

Gadhimai – This festival held in Bara district takes place every five years in November.

It is known as one of the worst forms of animal cruelty in the world.

In a span of 2 days some 200,000 animals are sacrificed. 20,000 buffaloes are publicly beheaded by licensed butchers who randomly hack the animals to death. In a span of 5 km around the Gadhimai temple anyone can kill any kind of animal in whatever manner. After 2 days the place has turned into a foul smelling marsh land covered in blood and animal remains.

Elephant polo – The World Elephant Polo Championship takes place in Nepal annually from late November till early December. Elephant polo may seem a fun game but remember that elephants do not naturally ride bicycles, balance on balls or play polo. In order to force them to perform these confusing and physically uncomfortable tricks, trainers typically use cruel training methods that inflict pain and cause fear.

Please accept the expression of our deepest concern and respect.

As of now we encourage everybody to boycott your animal abusing nation until you live in the 21st Century; NOT the Dark Ages.

You are not civilized and never will be all the time this mass slaughter is allowed !

Sincerely,

England: From the Dog’s Mouth – UK Elections May 2015.

England

dogs mouth

On 7th May 2015 the people of the UK have their opportunity to vote for a new government – http://www.parliament.uk/about/how/elections-and-voting/general/general-election-timetable-2015/

I (Mark) am an Englishman; and I am super proud to be able to say that here in the UK, I think we are a very animal welfare supportive nation.

Regardless of the state of the economy, the way in which people survive hardships at this current time; overseas (foreign) affairs; terrorism and the rest; the vast majority of people in the UK; the ‘man and woman on the street’ still very much care about animals in general and their welfare.

That is a great thing to say, but when you throw the subject of yet further improving issues of animal welfare to those in current government; why is this big ‘vote winning issue’ for many people simply discarded by them into the refuse sack of subjects like some rotten food discarded into the garbage?

Check this out – http://www.gkstrategy.com/mps-postbags-full-of-surprises/

It says:

“Remarkably – or perhaps not given the UK’s global reputation as animal lovers – animal welfare makes three entries in the top fourteen topics voters grill MPs on; the controversial badger culls came in fifth (ahead of child support in at six, and care of the elderly at seven), while animal research and experimentation peaked at number eight, and fox hunting at number fourteen. With a fifth of the list of top concerns being aligned to disputes typically associated with the Green Party, this research is rather encouraging for the environmentalist party,”

To me and many others here at home; and maybe in many of the other great nations around the globe, our individual attitudes to animals in need / distress are often quoted as “an indication of how civilised and compassionate a particular nation is” and also an indication of how people and organisations treat other people, particularly those who are individually or collectively more vulnerable or less fortunate than themselves.

General Elections, such as we are having here in the UK in May, and political Elections in general, wherever in the world they may be, are an opportunity for political parties and their potential candidates to show the common man what is at the core of their beliefs; their true values, as well as informing us all what they will specifically do in relation to ‘this or that’ if elected by us; the all important voters.

As an animal welfare campaigner with a few years (probably 35 or more ! – hmm) of experience under my belt; I think it would be fair to say as a generalisation, ‘Attitudes to animal welfare are an excellent way to promote and judge such important issues’.   Sadly; when it comes to government action and attitudes; you could say that they have drastically ‘lost the plot’ here.

Just to show once again, I will quote those figures from the GK poll unveiled by pollster Ipsos MORI (see link above) indicating the findings from their bi-yearly interviews with parliamentarians showcasing what topics MPs receive the most correspondence on.

Animal welfare makes three entries in the top fourteen topics:

  • badger culls came in fifth

  • animal research and experimentation peaked at number eight,

  • fox hunting came in at number fourteen.

Here is yet another point to consider:

  • 76% of people think people who treat animals badly are also more likely to treat people badly.

Here in the UK; a political party which would promise more action on animal welfare, which could for example include stricter rules in slaughterhouses; including the installation of cctv into ALL premises; or creating harsher penalties for people who cause suffering to pets such as dogs and cats; would lead to around six times the number of people forming a more favourable perception of any political candidate than people forming a less favourable perception.

Interesting eh ? – so are the politicians taking these poll factors on board ‘HMS General Election’ as they head for May 2015 ?

I think I can very clearly say here that regarding the issue of improvements supporting animals and their welfare; there is little on the horizon at present which will see any real changes. Instead, and as a generalisation; how do the governments of the day (currently a Conservative / Liberal Democrat coalition government) often view or brand us, ‘animal welfare people’ ?   – the term which is often banded about is, sadly and incorrectly, ‘terrorists’ / and or ‘animal rights’; nothing more or nothing less.  Regardless of the very many positive and excellent actions that most good animal welfare people take throughout any year, those in the ‘political elite’; who are often looking for particular hard hitting phrases, often simply ignore the term ‘welfare’ and instead prefer the term ‘animal rights activist(s)’.  To them, it creates a vision in grannies mind of a balaclava clad no-gooder; ready to strike out and cause distress for anything that he would pick on.  So Mr. Politician thinks and hopes that given enough of this jargon; granny will view the ‘mob’ as bad folk and go out and vote for the good man coming to her rescue; namely Mr. Politician.

Ok, take a look at the following video made for Jill (link following on a little); an English campaigner who died 20 years ago fighting to stop the disgusting live export of veal calves from the UK to mainland Europe – an issue I have been directly involved with for a very long time – 25 years or more.  Already at the time of Jill’s terrible death, the Conservative government of the UK at the time proudly boasted that ‘it had stopped baby calves from being crated’.  In the UK on our home soil that was very true; new legislation had actually stopped baby calves being separated from their mothers and being thrown into wooden crates for their short lives prior to becoming a veal steak.  An excellent positive for animal welfare.

I guess that you could say this was a positive move politically as well as for British baby calves; now liberated from the ghastly veal crate system.  But what was never said by the government of the day; and what really ‘stuck in the throat’ of tens of thousands of ‘normal’ British folk; getting them out onto the street to fight the export trade, was the very important fact that despite banning the veal crate here in the UK; the British Conservative government was still allowing British baby calves to be exported every day to mainland Europe; where they were then being thrown into wooden boxes called ‘veal crates’ for their very short lives !

Above – British calves being exported from Kent ports to veal crates in Europe while UK politicians talk Yukspeak about how wonderful they were to ban the crate !

Below – a baby calf is placed into a European veal crate and restrained by the head.

This is what Jill died for – trying to stop this.

calf crate_NEW

The issue of banning veal crates in the UK was very good positive press for the government of the time – but; the real yukspeak; which they wanted to keep quiet with; and which bummed off the animal welfare lobby, was the fact that baby calves were then still being shipped abroad in their thousands to overseas crates ! – the very cruel thing which had been banned here !  – and it was continuing to take action against exports of British calves going to the crate systems of mainland Europe that resulted in the tragic, tragic death of a wonderful, compassionate girl named Jill; a girl who is still remembered across the UK every year on the anniversary of her death which happened 20 years ago this year.

As the Jill video (link following) declares right at the start;

“the thing that separates us from what we are (often) accused of, that of being terrorists; is that ‘we’ have killed no one”.  It’s a sad video; and still, some 20 years on; still brings a tear to my eyes.  Jill was nothing more than a young, beautiful, compassionate girl who wanted a better world – and if we had many like her today then the world would be a much better place – now; yesterday and tomorrow !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFeKx_M-EJ0

Things have not changed a great deal in the 20 years since Jill’s tragic death.  Some aspects of the British press still like to class ALL ‘animal welfare people’ as ‘animal rights extremists’.  I guess it makes good reading and sells newspapers for them.  Animal welfare and animal rights – what is the difference here ? – should not ‘good policies’ on the issue of the welfare of animals not then give them ‘certain rights’ in their short and often pitiful lives ? – the right to good treatment on the farm; the right to good standards during transport; and the right to have a death which involves as little suffering as there can be ?

Can someone with ‘political trousers on’ sit across the table and explain to me where is the real border line dividing an ‘animal welfare’ person from an ‘animal rights’ person.  Does good animal welfare not automatically introduce certain rights for animals ? – where is the dividing line in reality that separates the ‘welfare’ person from the ‘rights’ person ? – I think that any animal that is going to have to die for the meat eater should be provided with a life and death which involves as little pain, terror and suffering throughout as can be.  So, does the animal not have a ‘right’ to this also ? – where exactly is this ‘branding’ of names really taking anyone – except to the newsagents to purchase your politically biased paper ?

I thought that real terrorists were what I saw on tv quite regularly now; such as those who decapitate charity workers for example or burn pilots in cages.  If I and others are to be given the same classification as those which undertake this; then who I ask is the person who is really out of touch ? – me or the politician ?

Who are we, the ‘animal people’ (lets call ourselves that), actually ‘terrorising’ ? – or is it more factually correct to say that actually we are often trying to expose those others who are causing the real daily ‘terror’ and fear into living, sentient creatures ? – who is the real ’terrorist’ here then ? – us at SAV or the guy who paints glasses on the sheep just before he kills it without any stunning in the hell hole of a slaughterhouse ?;  witness the abuses that some British sheep are experiencing in their final moments of life; or the alleged Halal slaughtermen shown in this video ?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2937206/Halal-abattoir-staff-hacked-taunted-sheep-One-worker-sacked-three-suspended-caught-camera-carrying-horrifying-routine-abuse.html

Who is putting real ‘terror’ into who ? – ask yourself, who is the actual ‘terrorist’ ?

The sheep in the Animal Aid undercover video are suffering terror at the result of the illegal actions of these people – so I guess they can be called ‘terrorists’.  Are visitors to SAV ‘suffering terror’ from me ‘the terrorist’ because I expose the reality of abuses, and do an article about the excellent work of say, my good friend Lesley (at ‘Eyes on Animals’ – http://www.eyesonanimals.com/ ) when she undertakes an investigation / expose of the situations at Turkish slaughterhouses ?

People who visit this site, like many other animal associated sites covering 1001 cruelty issues, have a simple choice; they can either refuse to watch the video footage, or alternatively, they can watch it; then rage and repent.  They have the choice – the option.  They have been informed of something that someone else wants to keep well and truly under their carpet – issues that they want to remain hidden from the public eye.  If it goes on, which it does; then I, a member of the public; surely have the right to inform other members of the public about that particular issue ? – if that classifies me or anyone else doing the same thing; such as the stray dog killings in Serbia; as a ‘terrorist’; then I am more than happy to be called one.  Give me the T shirt saying so and I will proudly wear it; I have my responses ready for those who ask !

The sheep in the UK halal slaughterhouse shown in the video footage above, which was  released in early February 2015 by Animal Aid, can do nothing apart from showing them enduring endless torment and suffering without any response (the silence of the lambs) before they finally die a barbaric, horrific death without even any attempt at pre-stunning.  I ask again; who is the real terrorist here ? – the organisation who exposes this suffering and terror by their undercover video footage, or the person in the slaughterhouse with the knife who causes the terror towards the animal(s) by their actions ??

Any Political Party in Government anywhere in the World cannot resolve all animal welfare issues by themselves. That day will never come.  Individuals and organisations each have a role to play in ending cruelty to animals. Governments and the political parties that form individuals and political parties have a dual role of both showing some level of leadership, whilst at the same time reflecting what the majority of people (ie. Voting electorate) want to see happen in their country.

Taking the UK (which as an Englishman I know best); animal cruelty is unacceptable to the vast majority of people in our country. When we have elections especially on the horizon as we do here in May 2015, political parties should constantly reflect this in what they say to voters, resultant actions they may promise and the results they take. Government leadership; such as amending or introducing new animal welfare legislation, is necessary either because it is what the majority of us people on the street want to see, or it is the key to amending current cruel behaviours.

For Wildlife legislation in the UK – the current government has commissioned the Law Commission to do a review of wildlife legislation.  This is long overdue; something which all aspects of society would support I think. The current law as it stands is confused, inconsistent, complex to exactly understand and often very difficult to enforce.

So what do the police do whenever they can ? – they avoid it – understandable maybe.

Wildlife law is not fit for purpose and unfortunately, the current review is still driven by deregulation, not by animal welfare.  As some kind of master stroke by the current Prime Minister, David Cameron MP; a man who is known for his love of hunting and killing foxes; it also excludes the Hunting Act. The hunting of animals is probably one of the biggest issues concerning animal welfare supporters within the UK (14th biggest mailbag to MP’s remember – as stated earlier); and so any review must include the Hunting Act, as it is the most enforced and successful piece of wildlife legislation. However, hunting has changed since the Act was originally introduced. Some practices which are still legal in the Act, such as allowing (hunting) dogs to be used underground, are terribly cruel and should be stopped.  This could and should be undertaken now by the government; chances very strongly (almost certainly) say that nothing will happen here for the benefit of wildlife before the next election in May 2015.

Now; PRE Election; Political parties should call for a review of all wildlife legislation, including the Hunting Act, with the one simple, greatly public supported aim of increasing wildlife welfare.

All Political Parties and their national candidates; right now, today, pre election May 2015; need to clearly demonstrate what exactly they do and do not stand for with specific policies about animals and animal welfare.  Staying ‘zip lipped’ on the issue is not the way to getting the majority of votes from an animal welfare supporting public – so why do they still stay zipped ?

The pledges below are straightforward, could be implemented quickly and have massive welfare benefits. I would even stick my neck out today and be bold enough to say that any political party of any colour which DOES take a positive stand here would get overwhelming support from the British voting public.  And wow, given the current state of national politics and how (are they from our planet ?) politicians are viewed, parties need every single vote from the public that they can muster !!

So; what could they do ? – here are a few political ‘point scoring issues’ for parties to consider and introduce prior to the May 2015 General Election – they mostly will not do it; but I will say what I feel – I am not out for votes anyway, but they are – so why do they not speak the speak ?

For Live Exports and Live animal transport within the EU (includes UK).   Ditch all the rather pathetic and cloudy, open to abuse legislation that currently exists in EU Regulation 1/2005 on the so called ‘welfare of animals in transport’.  Instead, get UK politicians and MEPs to collaborate and work towards ensuring that the EU introduces legislation for a maximum one off single journey time of 8 hours maximum for all animals in transport throughout Europe.   Current EU rules allow pigs to be transported for 24 hours; and for other species such as Ovine and Bovine; there is no real maximum journey time; as long as hauliers take the necessary breaks; whilst at the same time being clearly authorised to keep the animals on board the vehicles ! – some break for the animals !

For Badger culls. A massive area of animal welfare controversy within the UK.  As we have seen from past official government created investigations and reports undertaken and produced by people such as Professor Krebs ( http://www.bovinetb.info/docs/krebs.pdf ) there is no scientific justification for the badger culls. Culling, will make no meaningful contribution to eradicating bovine TB. End culling now and instead target political leadership to a comprehensive strategy, including effective vaccinations.  Badger culling as it has recently been undertaken by the current government, one could say, is simply a political stunt established to show both cattle  farmers and the pro cull lobby that it is attempting to do something rather than just sit on its hands.  It is simply, at the end of the day, an attempt to get votes from the farming community; but nothing much else.  In the UK, badgers are a protected species; until the government gets their hands on them, one could say; then the term ‘protected’ seems to vanish into the early morning fog !

For Snares. About 750,000 animals are caught in snares each year. Two thirds are unintended victims, mostly being badgers and domestic pet cats. They are inherently inhumane and indiscriminate; targeting all who fall into their grasp. Sadly, we are one of the few countries to still allow snares to be legally used –so let’s change that and make them illegal.

For Fighting animals. Criminalise the trade in all animals used for fighting. Hand out big fines in addition to handing out prison sentences.

For Greyhound racing. There has been little improvement in greyhound welfare in the last 10 years. It is still very closed and secretive. Strengthen the statutory framework for self regulation, including allowing frequent public reporting on dog welfare issues at any events.

For Bullfighting. Work within Europe to end public subsidy to bullfighting. It is currently classified within the EU as Spanish ‘culture’ and so thus cannot be stopped.  But if EU subsidies to producing fighting bulls was stopped immediately, a large amount of bulls would not be reared for fighting.

Conclusion.

Wanting to see improvements in animal welfare is a popular and very widely held view by the British public. Political parties and any of their ; it could be a big vote winner for them; but will they do it ? – candidates can use their stance on these animal welfare issues above (and others I have not mentioned) to show people what core values and beliefs they actually hold as the peoples political representative.

Animal welfare is very largely self contained policy area – in most cases it is unlikely to conflict with other policy outcomes.

As a result their could be major improvements in animal welfare over the next parliament; post May 2015; if the British Government listened to the wishes of its people and implemented some or all of the recommendations above.

Somehow; I feel that in reality there will be very little change for the election and in the coming years.  I guess that that means I go on being the terrorist, and the political spin doctors go on with pushing out their daily yukspeak !!

Regardless, SAV will probably be around for a while longer !

In memory of Jill – she was only young when she was killed; but she had experienced the political ‘system’ and decided to show that she was not happy with it – that she would fight the fight ! – that’s why we will always remember her.

Campaign Update 4/3/15 – Where have all the Svilajnac City dogs gone ?

Goran 2

https://www.change.org/p/mayor-of-svilajnac-predrag-milanovic-predsednik-svilajnac-rs-stoppt-die-hundefänger-stop-dog-catcher?recruiter=7882471&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=share_facebook_responsive&utm_term=des-lg-no_src-no_msg

Goran and Slavica are following up the situation at Svilajnac in Serbia regarding all the dogs that vanish from the authority facility (called a ‘shelter’ – some shelter !) that they are taken to after capture by the catching teams.  Investigations here are ongoing.

In the meantime, SAV have written to the EU Enlargement Head asking her to make contact with the Mayor of Svilajnac to ask where all the captured dogs have actually gone.  This formal request will be used as evidence.

According to what we know,

Goran dogcatcher petition

– Many of these animals end up in a so-called ‘shelter’ where we are certain that they die under suspicious circumstances after 2-3 days.

– Many of the captured dogs just ‘disappear’.

SAW Serbia 1

From our information, it is alleged by the authorities that the dogs have been vaccinated, neutered and released.

But many years experience being involved with the Serbian authorities, and most importantly, the fact that none of the taken dogs have ever surfaced anywhere again; leads us to believe that the dogs are being killed within a few days from capture and arrival at the ‘shelter’.

Serbia has a ‘NO KILL law’ and we now demand that the Serbian guidelines are observed with respect to the Serbian Animal Welfare Act.

SAW Serbbia 2

We have asked the EU representatives to ask the authorities in Svilajnac why they are not obeying the EU / Serbian ‘rule of law’ as required by the EU for new accession states by enforcing their own Serbian animal welfare act.

If the authorities do not enforce / are not enforcing the ‘rule of law’ under the Act then they are not meeting accession requirements of the EU accession states.

We have also asked for details of the whereabouts of all the captured dogs.

Saw Serbia 3

All of us appeal to the Mayor of the Svilajnac city to end this cruelty to animals with immediate effect.

Finally, we have asked for information and to know the whereabouts of all the dogs have been caught in the past 2 months.

SAW serbia 5

In this post you will see photographs of some of the captured dogs that were taken to the shelter, and which have gone missing since.

Of particular interest as one example, is a Golden Retriever which you can see was befriended out on the street.  Later pictures show the very same dog at the ‘shelter’  facility after capture.  We do not know what happened to it after this; but this is typical of the questions we are now asking for futher investigation.

SAW 7Serbia

SAW serbia 6

If as the authorities are claiming; the dogs have been ‘vaccinated, neutered and released’; then we ask where is this particular dog who was known from the streets ? – it has not been seen since it was photographed at the ‘shelter’ !

Update 5/3/15 –

The dogcatchers belong to a private firm called ‘AvenijaMB’ from Vrnjacka Banja, Novo Selo.  It has facilities for 80 dogs caught on the streets; but has made contracts with no less than 23 authorities in three parts of central Serbia.

A formal Charge has been made now by EPAR against AvenijaMB and also against the Republic Veterinary Inspector who produced a report of the situation, which seems very different to the reality !  The transfer of captured dogs from one region to another authority is not permitted.

Every single community must have its own NO KILL shelter according to the law.

It should also have its own zoo hygiene company which should be responsible for both the control of irresponsible animal (public) owners and which must also produce a programme of control for the stray animals in that area.

Both the killing, and the throwing out onto the streets of CNR (Catch, Neuter and Release) are forbidden according to the lawAfter they are captured, animals must be sterilised and microchipped; and then kept at the shelter until they are either rehomed or they die a natural death.

There have been several instances where recently the Ministry of Agriculture has presented the idea of changing the law so that animals caught can be killed after just 30 days.  But they have been fought hard by the animal welfare groups and it can be considered that for now at least this idea is dead.

Only responsible ownership of public owned animals, combined with the shelter captured animals sterilisation and rehoming programme are considered by many to be the positive way forward.  This is what the law demands; but unfortunately for the animals, it is very much different to what happens at shelters operated by the private companies.  The situation above being just one example.

Goran has provided further pictures (see below) of the Golden Retriever which you can see was befriended out on the street, caught, and then ended up in the shelter.  We are convinced that this is just one of many dogs which have been killed at the ‘shelter’.

Where now is this Golden Retriever and all the other dogs captured in Svilajnac City and taken to the so-called ‘shelter’ (see the above photographs of the same dog) ?? – from what we can find out; they have simply vanished; but according to the authorities, all the dogs have been vaccinated, neutered and released.  So, if this is the case, where are they now ?

– they dont seem to be back on the streets !

Who does one believe ?

England: Further SAV Letter In Support of Keith Taylor MEP Correspondence Now Sent To EU Commissioner Hahn.

SAV Comment:

The following shows just a fraction of the photographic and video evidence that we and others have regarding animal suffering in Serbia that is not being addressed by the Serbian government and authorities. IT IS NOW TIME FOR CHANGE – especially as Serbia wishes to become a new EU member.  Citizens of the EU will not tolerate this kind of animal abuse.

We will be a Serbian Animals Voice !

——————————–

Further to the letter sent to EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn by English MEP / Vice President of the EU Intergroup for Animal Welfare, Mr Keith Taylor on 19th February 2015;

Letter to Commissioner Hahn – Serbia and Bosnia stray animal welfare – 19 Feb 2015 (1)

We at SAV have now completed a follow up letter to the Commissioner giving him several video links and many photographs of ‘animal welfare’ (??) situations we have experienced over the last few years at SAV.  Note that we have published all the animal fighting videos on this site during the last month.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE9l-cm64hU

EPAR3

As you can see from our letter, we are asking Commissioner Hahn; who has overall EU responsibility for “European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations” – ie. allowing the Republic of Serbia to become a member of the EU; to review our presentation, photographs and animal fighting links (especially) to ensure that the Serbian government; local authorities and national police actually take EXISTING Serbian legislation much more seriously by actually enforcing the law.  This is something we have not seen much proof of during our last 10 years producing this site.

We have been working with Mr. Taylor MEP over the last few weeks on this very issue. As both Keith says in his letter, and we also do in ours; by allowing animal abuse such as can be seen for example in the video links; and by not enforcing its own (Serbian laws) on animal  welfare; which are good; Serbia is NOT upholding the fundamental principle set by the EU for new member states of proving that they are enforcing ‘the rule of law’ (their own national legislation) within their own borders.

shelter 1

And so by not enforcing the ‘rule of law’ on animal welfare as one example; and using Serbian legislation within Serbia to prosecute offenders; it (Serbia) is showing the EU that on just this one particular issue alone that we are involved with, national legislation IS NOT being applied.  Thus it should be considered that Serbia is currently not in a position to be a suitable EU member state.

EPAR4

Only when Serbia actually does apply Serbian law on animal welfare; and prosecutes or takes other actions as necessary to prove things ARE being done to the EU; should it then be seen to be complying with the EU ‘rule of law’ requirements and thus be allowed to join the EU as a new member state.

Please click on the following link to read our follow up letter to EU Commissioner Hahn in full.

Note that at the start; all contact addresses have been removed from the original.

IMPORTANT – when you click on the following link below, you should then see a Word doc with this same name as below appear at the bottom of the site.  Simply click on this same Word doc to open the letter.

It should start by saying:    “Addresses removed from original sent”.

Commissioner Hahn SAV Post version

We now await further correspondence in future from the Commissioner regarding our letter and that of Keith Taylor MEP; and we will immediately report any news of information on this site.

We have lots of excellent Serbian campaigner friends and shelter operating friends – see some of them and their work at our ‘Shelters’ section of the site – https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/serbian-shelters/   They work relying entirely on supporter donation support when it should also be provided by the government, who should have animal welfare responsibilities; especially regarding the keeping of stray animals in shelters.

Evidence is provided to the authorities; and they simply ignore it and walk away, leaving our friends to pick up the animal pieces.  It should not be the case that hard evidence of causing suffering is just ignored.

EU AW LOGO

We are finally starting to reach a corner.  The government and authorities have done very little for animal welfare for many years by ignoring the evidence and failing to prosecute those who cause suffering.  Maybe now that Serbia wants EU accession the tide is turning.  They are NOT complying with the fundamentals of EU accession – namely enforcing the rule of (Serbian) law within Serbia.  We, as an EU based NGO will continue to provide the evidence to the EU.  We need the EU to act and inform Serbia that it is not enforcing its own laws for animal welfare.  And we say to the EU, until Serbia does and proves that it is enforcing the law, it should not be allowed to become a new member state of the EU.

Serbian government and regional authorities needs to get their house in order re animal welfare before the EU even considers their accession.  We speak for Serbian welfare campaigners, shelters and also for the current citizens of the EU who are shocked and appalled by what they see on this site.

Serbian government and authorities – clean up your act

– make things better for animals, not worse!

To Prime Minister Davutoglu, To President Erdogan/ Ankara, and  To Ambassador Huseyin Avni Karslioglu/ Berlin

Dear Prime Minister! Dear President! Dear Ambassador!

It was brought to my attention that a brand new “animal shelter” will be opened soon in Istanbul. But this is no ordinary animal shelter. This facility is a mass death camp for 20,000 dogs and Istanbul’s largest massacre in the cities history is planned to take place at said facility.

The dogs are penned into spaces of 0.5 square meter, no room to move around, waiting in their own fecies and urin for a death that can be only be described as mercyful.

The building is out made of concrete and Steel, no heating, no light, no shelter from the elements and no shade structure.

This death camp is 3 km away from the newly planned 3rd Bosporus bridge. It is situated in the outskirts of Istanbul and has 2 crematory.

Approximately  200,000 dogs live in Istanbul. They are being caught one by one and transported there. This means nothing else but the execution of 200,000 living and feeling creatures. Once the dogs are there, nobody will hear their cries when they are being burned in the crematory.

Dog catchers will capture the animals, transport them to the facility into the small dungeons where they perish.

Similar facilities are planned in the Asian part of Istanbul and Izmir.

Just like in 1910, where 80,000 dogs were shipped to the island of Hayirsiz Ada, dogs will be eradicated.

Word is, that people could hear their cries all the way to Istanbul until they died.

It is apparent how pointless this gruesome act was, because the number of strays has risen to about 200,000 as of today.

Presumably the construction and maintenance for this death camp was very expensive. It is obvious that it will be up and running soon.

It can also be assumed that it would be less costly, much less in fact with the help of volunteers, to have the dogs spayed/ neutered in each part of the city.

Nobody can even remotely believe that the city of Istanbul is even capable to fed and care for 20,000 dogs on a daily basis.

There won’t be any veterinary care provided – the animals will die of starvation and thirst and devour each other.

Mr. Prime Minister, Mr. President, Mr. Ambassador,

Your country is trying to be accepted into the European Union.

I am very well aware of the fact that not all of the European states are committed to humanitarian animal Welfare.

Almost everywhere mercilessness and commercialism are generally dictating the political guidelines.

I believe this should be a good reason to lead by example – for all of Europe to see.

These animals are part of Creation in your religion as well as it is in my religion.

They are defenseless, neither did they choose their destiny, nor did they deserve this.

When you are giving the order of the annihilation of 20,000 Creatures we will hear about this. Europe will hear about this.

You will loose part of your soul and carry this burden forever. I cannot believe that you would want this for yourselves.

Please avoid this tragedy!

Letter Below In Turkish to Copy and Send to THOSE DETAILED ABOVE
