He’s rescued hundreds of bears from bile farms but, for Animals Asia Vietnam boss Tuan, those still caged and suffering never leave his thoughts.

In 2011, an Animals Asia team was in Vietnam’s Gia Lai province to rescue a sun bear from a bile farm. As is always the case with bear bile farms, the animal, now known as Nelson, was kept in appalling conditions.

Animals Asia’s Vietnam Director Tuan Bendixsen remembers the tiny, rusting cage that had held Nelson for his entire life (pictured below).

Bear farms take their toll in myriad ways. Nelson’s teeth were shattered and infected from desperate attempts to chew through the iron bars, while the surface of his eyes were scratched affecting his vision.

Over 11 years rescuing bears from the bile industry, Tuan has no shortage of bad memories. He knows better than anyone what bear bile farming looks like: hopeless, fearful eyes, balding skin, open wounds, malnourished bodies and shattered teeth.

Tuan said:

“I’ve rescued over 150 bears in Vietnam and I’ve never yet seen a bile farmed bear held in conditions that are anything other than deplorable. Five years ago in Pleiku for Nelson’s rescue it was the same. I’ve lost count of how many farms I’ve been on, but they never fail to fill me with dread.”

So when local Forest Protection Department (FPD) officials told Tuan there were more bears being held in the province, he knew he had to act to spare them the horror he had seen repeated elsewhere so many times.

That day he made them a promise: if you can convince farmers to give them up, we can save the bears – anytime and we’d be back.

That pledge was vital. Vietnam’s Forestry departments are woefully under funded. If they were to find evidence of bear bile extraction they would most likely be forced to turn a blind eye. They simply have no facilities to care for confiscated bears.

Tuan’s promise changed all that. It empowered the FPD to go after those farmers, watch them closely for any mistakes and convince them every day that there is no future in the cruelty of bear bile farming.

This month, more than half a decade later, that pressure looks to have paid off as hopes grow that these bears (pictured above) can finally be saved.

Tuan added:

For five years I’ve known these bears were suffering unimaginable torment. Underfed, unable to stretch their bodies, sickness, pain and mental agony. We’ve seen it all before, but I know when I set foot on those farms it’ll be as horrific as the first time. The disgust of bear bile farming never dulls. The bears you can’t rescue, haunt you – they’re never far from your thoughts.

“Now we just hope we can rescue these bears and start to turn their lives around. We can’t give them back the years they’ve lost but we can make them free from pain. If we can get them back to our sanctuary we can give them sunshine, open air and bear friends to play with.”

We have had the following (below) through this morning; and to be honest, we agree with much of it.  But the American people have voted in a democracy; now they face the future under Trump leadership.

We see nothing positive for US animal welfare about the last days events.  With wildlife killing sons, will Wolves and Coyotes be given better protection as they try to move South and breed in the West ? – no; no doubt there will be better legislation for hunters and wildlife killers – US wildlife has witnessed a very black day.

And knowing some of Trumps ‘advisors’; we will probably see a return to more or less nationwide ‘Ag Gag’ which will wipe over animal suffering in slaughterhouses etc and instead allow prosecution of those brave souls who go undercover to get the footage of abuse and animal suffering.

America; you have elected him; so now you sit and endure the political policies from a man who has no political experience; protecting gun owners and users; disregarding the environment and effectively only taking care of himself and his kind.  Of course, you are all billionaires with top rate healthcare and all that; so no worries !!.

In Europe’s view, a very sad day.

 ——————————————————–

Dear Mark,

We have woken up this morning to the most shocking news. An extreme nationalist has won the US presidential election on a campaign filled with racism, misogyny and hatred.

This is a very frightening day, first and foremost to people of colour and other minorities living in the United States. We express our solidarity with them, and urge them to stay strong and united through this nightmare.

But we need to do more than mourn. This election result is the consequence of decades of ‘market knows best’ economics, through which ordinary people have been valued only for their ability to make the richest richer still, and everything we value has been turned into a commodity to be traded in the global marketplace.

Inequality has soared to unprecedented levels, communities have been hollowed out, their voices marginalised, the planet is being pillaged and burnt – all in the name of profit. And when, in 2008, this system was demonstrated to be utterly unsustainable by the collapse of the banks, the poorest were forced to pick up the tab, while the super rich went about their business as usual.

Trump provides no answer to these problems. He is himself a billionaire tax avoider who flaunts his ill-gotten wealth as a badge of honour. But he has successfully played on the unhappiness and frustration of millions of people in the most despicable way imaginable. He has fuelled a wave of hatred aimed at those already marginalised and discriminated against.

That’s why the markets and elites will try to come to terms with Trump. But we cannot. We will resist everything he stands for. But we can only do that by building something better. Only in a society in which everyone has their needs met and which is built on openness, on community and on equality, can we truly defeat these ideas.

On a day like today, we can all feel weak and powerless. But by coming together we can be powerful. We’ve seen this only recently in our campaign to beat TTIP, the biggest trade deal the world has ever seen, despite the concerted efforts of an army of corporate lobbyists. And we see it in countless examples across the world from landless struggles in Latin America to those against sweatshops in south Asia and agribusiness in Africa. We win small victories every day.

We believe the humanity inside us will win out – if we stay strong, stay safe and stay together.

Thank you for your support.

we have been provided with some positive news from one of our friends.

To keep it brief, we will show you the information that we have been sent in Italics below:

Message: Hi Mark

According to the news published in the Serbian media (http://img.blic.rs/vesti/aktuelno/vest/pas-arci-kome-su-odsecene-sape-sada-udomljen-u-italiji/23414.phtml):
on December 20, 2011 the dog Arci was adopted in Italy.

Arci was transferred to Italy by the international animal welfare organization S.O.S. ANIMALI, based near Rome.

After getting used to new environment, Archie will get special prostheses with which he will be able to walk. – said Natasa Vukmirovic, president of the association LJUDI ZA ŽIVOTINJE (HUMANS FOR ANIMALS).

I hope Arci is much loved, and will always be well taken care of.

So fingers crossed that everything is still going well for Archie and that he has found help and a safe new home with care in Italy.  We want to thank Desanka for taking time out to give us an update of the situation.

This positive news has also been sent to our contact in Sweden who first contacted us with concerns, asking if Archie had been returned to the streets.  In a private e mail we said that we thought this would be very unlikely given the seriousness of his injuries; and from what we now know, this was the case and hopefully all is still good for Archie.

Does Anyone Have Up To Date News On ‘Archie’ ?

serbian-flag

We are putting out an appeal for information for one of our supporters in Sweden.  Can you help us ?

Back in August 2011 we posted the following on the (SAV) site about a dog named ‘Archie’ who had 2 of his legs chopped off by somebody.  Why ? – probably because he was a stray that they hated.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2011/08/28/serbia-a-terrible-case-of-suffering-inflicted-on-a-young-stray-street-dog-archie-his-abuser-must-be-found-and-punished-imprisoned-in-accordance-with-serbian-legislation/

On behalf of our Swedish supporter, we are trying to find out any current news on Archie.  Is he still alive ?; is he being cared for somewhere ? – is he now at a shelter ? – if so, who and where ?

We are just trying to get any news we can so we can pass on – good or bad.

We have never been given any updates from anyone despite trying to publicise the cruelty and suffering that this poor dog endured at the time in August 2011.

If you do have any info, please give it to us through the ‘Contact’ tab which is at the top of the page.

Thanks (in hope) – SAV.

China animal groups leading mall bear campaign

02 November 2016

Fifty of China’s animal groups are now leading the campaign calling for Grandview Mall in Guangzhou to close its aquarium and free the animals it keeps.

This includes Pizza – a polar bear that has made worldwide headlines, prompting over a million signatures requesting his release.

There continues to be an offer from Yorkshire Wildlife Park to rehouse Pizza. It’s an offer that is yet to receive an official rejection though reaction from Grandview has been largely negative.

Previously Animals Asia met with Grandview bosses on two occasions to discuss the possible release of Pizza citing welfare concerns, while suggesting short-term solutions to improve her care. As a result of these meetings, Grandview installed basic enrichment items and a snow machine to help improve Pizza’s conditions.

Animals Asia’s offer of further assistance also remains open, although the we maintain the bear requires better facilities than can ever be available in her present location.

Confusion remains over Grandview’s plans to both expand their facilities and increase the number of animals in their care. Criticism of their animal welfare standards prompted suggestions that it had stalled. However, Grandview bosses still appear bullish about expansion plans.

Unfortunately, while Grandview has prompted vast opposition in China and internationally it appears to continue to be commercially successful. While criticism continues in Chinese media it does not appear to be affecting crowds as yet.

In this context, the public announcement by a consortium of Chinese animal welfare groups is significant. It’s important that Chinese animal lovers continue to be heard on domestic animal welfare issues.

Meanwhile Pizza bear has become a figurehead for the wider issues of animals being used commercially in China. This includes facilities such as malls, theme parks and safari parks as well ongoing concerns over animal performances, which are ongoing despite a ban.

Animals Asia’s Captive Animal Welfare programme continues to focus on all animals suffering hardship throughout the country as a result of poor facilities and care. That includes supporting animal groups to improve lives and also maintaining dialogue directly with captive animal facilities in order to improve care.

Pizza bear has brought increased scrutiny on projects across China and it’s hoped that this focus will ultimately make them less palatable to investors, public planners and general public.

deforest

Mark,

Orangutans, sloths, and jaguars — Burger King’s palm oil policy is putting endangered species at risk by failing to protect invaluable tropical forests.

Despite years of public outcry, Burger King has failed to commit to a deforestation policy that protects tropical forests. These forests are destroyed to plant more soy and palm that ends up in Burger King’s supply chain.

An excavator constructs a canal in recently cleared land in an oil palm concession owned by PT Andalan Sukses Makmur (PT ASMR) concession, a subsidiary of Bumitama Agro Ltd. The area is near Kumai Seberang village, next to Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan.

Deforestation accounts for an incredible 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Competitors like McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts have committed to eliminating deforestation from their supply chain. It’s not only unconscionable that Burger King’s parent company Restaurant Brands International has failed to do the same — it’s just bad business.

It’s high time RBI do the same to protect tropical rainforests and the amazing wildlife they are home to.

take-action-3

Tell Burger King’s parent company RBI to adopt a No Deforestation policy across its massive global supply chains.

Last year, Burger King scored a woeful 10/100 on the Union for Concerned Scientists’ palm oil scorecard.

burger-king2

Burger King promised to review its rainforest policy back in 2010, but has instead spent the last six years contributing to the destruction of tropical forests, adding to global warming emissions and decimating the habitats of already-threatened species.

There are fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers and 1,500 Borneo pygmy elephants left in the wild because of irresponsible palm oil policies. Their homes are being destroyed to make room for palm oil sold to major global brands like Burger King.

We know that when we come together, we have the power to shift even the biggest corporate players. Just last year, we pressured McDonald’s to commit to 100% sustainable palm oil by 2020. That’s why we’re now pressuring Burger King’s parent company RBI — which also owns Tim Hortons. We want RBI to know that consumers across the world are demanding it adopts a No Deforestation policy before it’s too late.

take-action-3

Urge Burger King’s parent company RBI to implement a No Deforestation policy to protect tropical forests from further destruction.

Thanks for all that you do,
Hanna, Fatah, and the team at SumOfUs
