Warm hearts beat the cold

Trying to improve our winter mood 😉

It’s getting cold at night…

Hello, world! 🙂

How many of you are in this photo?
All of the kitties in the shelter are safe and loved for life, but they do need help; especially to keep them both warm and fed during these cold winter months.
Thank you !

Well Winter has arrived now and is letting everyone know that the days are shorter and a lot colder.
All the cats are doing fine but it must never be forgotten that they always need food, veterinary care (such as vaccinations) and a warm house in which they can bed down.
We at SAV are asking you to please consider giving something in the way of a donation to the shelter to help them get through this cold season. As we always say, anything you can give is very much appreciated and welcomed.
Here above and below are some pictures taken recently at the shelter showing a selection of the kitties.

CHANTAL

Above – Chantal today – a beautiful cat full of life; very different to the little kitten in October.
We have no idea of where or when Chantal was born, or how she ended up on the street all alone; what we do know is that she was found lying motionless near the pavement, most probably hit by a car.
She was the embodiment of utter despair, a tiny and seemingly hopeless creature with filthy, matted fur and wide terrified eyes that was totally unable to get up.
Her first X ray scan showed that she had a fracture of her right femoral head and all of us were puzzled to see that she was still able to put weight on her right rear leg, yet she was dragging the other one, so another X-ray scan needed to be taken and it turned out that she had a broken spine as well. Someone even mentioned putting her down, but we wanted to try and give her another chance, regardless of how slim it was, so we put her in the cage; she was being given painkillers together with vitamin B complex every day and we all just waited to see what would happen next.
Fortunately, even though her vertebrae were broken, the spinal cord remained unharmed and she promptly began to walk – staggering, stumbling and falling but she walked. A stroke of good luck in her life (which had been miserable so far) was that she befriended a healthy kitten we’d taken in around the same time. Slightly a little younger than she was, her new friend quickly became her therapist, her strength and the force that pushed her forward.
In just a couple of weeks, with huge help of her little pal, Chantal managed to beat all odds and emerged a winner 🙂 She keeps improving by the day, she is already capable of climbing onto the bed and she spends most of her time doing more or less everything a healthy kitten would do – she’s playing with cat toys, defending her place in a cat tunnel she’s proclaimed to be hers, wrestling with her kitty friends and her days are finally full of joy.
She is not filthy and pitiable anymore; her long hair is shiny, sleek and soft and she’s already showing what a gorgeous, luxurious furred beauty she will become when she grows up.
At such a tender age she was forced to endure something that no cat, much less a kitten should have to go though in a lifetime, but she fought like hell and she won because at least sometimes “fortune favors the brave”.
Any donation to help, feed and keep the cats warm this winter; – please visit:
Below – Chantal’s first visit to the vet, in early October…

THANK YOU !

FURTHER UPDATE 8/11/15
SAV Comment – the following sounds like a very good idea and partial solution to the problems. We will try to find out about where to make donations, but for the moment we suggest using the Facebook limnk at the very end of this post – please make it clear in your mail that the donation is for Jelena and a car. Thank you.
Dear all..:) after Jelenas yesterday post (see below – SAV) the idea was born to collect for a car!
Costs for transport are so high and in Serbia it is possible to get one for max. 1500 €!
I hope we all will be able to collect this amount, so Dragoslava Ljuboja and Jelena Ljuboja can buy their own car and minimize the transport costs in the future..
Glen Smith thank you in advance for your unbelievable donation of 500 €…:) and thank you all for your support now and in the past! 🙂

Original Announcement
After few days of thinking and calculating , we have made decision . After all , I think that all of you deserve to know everything about that . All of you know how much ill dogs we have .
For those who not know , we have dog with metastasis , dog with dislocated hip and something more ( with low funds probably never will know what ) , dog with crushed hip ( who also need lot of examination because obviously is il ) , 2 dogs with chronic gastro problems, dog with bigger heart ( consequence of heart worm ) , dog with epilepsy ( who also need more vet examination) , dog with lung problem , dog with bone problem, dog with arthritis , paraplegic dog with low function of kidneys and bladder .
It is not easy to watch them every day . I won’t lie , for so many years in animal welfare we never had so many dogs who need constant vet . Today I must inform you that all of them will not have any vet .
We have vet in Coka but that same vet did not recognised that cat has 3 dangerous virus even when she barely was alive. I do not want that for my dogs . We have vet in Senta but she only can work sterilisation and vaccination – she has no ultrasound, x-ray or lab. Our dogs need all that because of their condition. That is reason why I take them to nearest clinic that has all of that . They are great . They work careful , they pay attention on everything , and they often reduce my bills .
But , transport to them is expensive for us . For example , total costs for Charlotte was more than 600E . For her was collected 300E. Difference we had to pay from money for shelter food . and she is not only example . Some of dogs could not collect anything . Not only that , for some sterilisations we still owe money .
So this is reason of our decision. We can not allow that dogs be hungry . We buy them food every few days because never have enough to buy big packs for week or two . Or whole month . It is hard decision, it is not what we wanted but we now have no choice.
Maybe was better to leave them on the street , maybe some of them could find better luck than with us . Maybe . But it is too late . They are here and they will have to survive on their own. For so many years only 3 of our rescued dogs died, 2 because they were old , one because was ill and had bad vet . I only hope that that number will not increase now.
We have done everything for them, and maybe somebody will judge this decision , but I can not choose who will go to vet , who no. I live with all of them , I see when they are in pain, when they are bad , when they suffer .
And I gave everything that they be ok.
But in this point I do not have anything to offer them anymore . Sorry.

As many of you already know, Sneska has a chronic kidney disease and has been showing symptoms of uremic stomatitis, which is a consequence of her primary disease, since the beginning of summer.
Over the last few months she has been given painkillers almost every day as it was the only way to keep her pain free and able to eat; unfortunately, we can do nothing to cure her CKD and make her healthy again. After her UV scan which showed what bad shape her kidneys were in, the vet wasn’t very optimistic and lately he seems almost surprised she is still hanging on.
However, we’ve been wondering for quite some time if we are doing her a favor or torturing her trying to prolong her life, albeit with the best intentions. She is not happy for a myriad of reasons: firstly, she is essentially an outdoor cat who adores the sun and is aching to be free, but she’s been imprisoned inside the house for over a year, for her own good. Secondly, she’s been pricked countless times over the months just because we wanted to ease the pain in her mouth so she could chew and swallow her food to stay alive; the result is that she started to shun humans, which is something she has never done before. It’s a fact that many cats with CKD can live out their lives without ever reaching kidney failure, but Sneska is at least 14 years old already and besides, what’s the point of life without joy?
Little by little, she became a wretched, sad, tormented creature, totally hopeless, utterly unhappy and that’s the exact opposite of what we wanted to achieve.
Long story short, for good or for bad, we made the decision to let her live whatever time she has left the way she wants – in the yard, together with her companions of 14 years, soaking up the sun, running through the early morning frost, climbing the roof, scratching trees, with no meds and no fear.
And that’s what she’s been doing since Saturday, more vivacious and happier than she has been in a long time. Instead of spending her days all contorted and miserable, she is finally the light-legged, swift, curious, proud Sneska who is holding her head up high, the one we have known, respected and adored over all of these years.
Each new day is a gift for her, she’s living it with absolute intensity, with a heart full of joy; when the time comes she will be ready to leave with no regrets and another star will appear in the dark night sky.
Run and shine now, our precious Sneska, run like there’s no tomorrow and always remember how much we love you.
