UK: Celebrate 90 Years of Saving Foxes and Other Wildlife With the LACS.

uk

LACSHere in the UK, we are very pleased and proud of our fabulous League Against Cruel Sports (LACS), which is celebrating its 90th  year anniversary this year !

Founded by Henry Amos and Ernest Bell in November 1924, the organisation at that time was called the ‘League for the Prohibition of Cruel Sports’.  It was established as a breakaway organisation from the RSPCA.  The League had its inaugural meeting on 25th November 1924.

The principles of the League were as they still are today – … that it is iniquitous to inflict suffering, either directly or indirectly, upon sentient animals for the purpose of sport

Its first journal named ‘Cruel Sports’ was published in 1927.  The national appeal against stag hunting followed in 1928.  During 1940 the League was forced to move out of its London premises due to bombing.  In 1942 the League changed its name to the current ‘League Against Cruel Sports’.

The LACS produces a magazine for all its members, which is named ‘Protect’.

2014 marks a big year for the LACS; as they (and we, its members) now celebrate 10 years since the passing of the UK Hunting Act, which introduced a national ban on the hunting of fox, mink, deer Stag and hare with hounds.  It was a great victory for hunted animals back in 2004 in the UK.

As the coalition government here in the UK, led by pro hunt Prime Minister and hunter, David Cameron MP, approaches its final year of power before the next general election, the pro-hunt lobby in the UK are getting very angry by the distinct lack of a free vote in Parliament to repeal the Hunting Act; a vote which was promised by hunter Cameron very early after polling day; almost 4 years ago !

cameron hunter

The UK organisation the ‘Countryside Alliance’, which is doing all it can to get a full return to hunting, are now feeling rather betrayed by Cameron and the other MP’s who were in the pro-hunt lobby group.

80% of the British public wish the Hunting Act to remain in place.

The current situation is that if a free vote were to take place in the UK parliament at the moment, the majority of members of parliament (MP’s) would vote to RETAIN the Hunting Act.  But as always, the threat to bring back hunting always remains, and because of this we always have to be on our guard.  In a very recent poll undertaken by the LACS, 80% of the British general public said that they DO NOT THINK that hunting should be made legal again.  This may also be a major reason why David Cameron is not acting to do anything about a free vote in the House of Commons; especially with an election on the near horizon !

The ‘No Joke’ Campaign headed by comedian Dave Spikey.

In November 2013 the LACS launched a nationwide awareness campaign featuring comedian Dave Spikey to highlight the importance of the Hunting Act in protecting British wildlife.

The ‘Foxy February’ campaign – love for one of Britain’s finest mammals.

February 2014 is going to be the month to celebrate all things foxy !!  The LACS are producing a leaflet on fox myths and facts.  They are also putting out photos each day on social media.  You can join in and celebrate all that is good about foxes by capturing sightings and images and then forwarding them on to the League.

Germany – Fox Hunting and the February ‘Fox Week’

The above situation in the UK is so very different to that regarding the terrible abuse of very healthy and beautiful foxes in Germany; where there is even a ‘Fox Week’ held in February when the aim by hunters is to kill as many foxes as they possibly can.

USA: USDA Shutters Calf Slaughter Plant in New Jersey in Wake of HSUS Investigation.

USDA Shutters Calf Slaughter Plant in New Jersey in Wake of HSUS Investigation

Undercover investigation reveals abusive handling and inhumane slaughter

Shrewsbury, N.J. – The U.S. Department of Agriculture reacted strongly to a complaint filed by The Humane Society of the United States, ordering Catelli Bros. of Shrewsbury to suspend its operations on Friday for egregious inhumane handling of calves in violation of federal law.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service withdrew its federal inspectors, which are required for slaughter operations. The HSUS commended the agency for its enforcement action, and called on USDA to close a loophole in federal policy that allows the slaughter of “downed” veal calves—those too sick or injured to walk on their own—and does not give calves the same protections as adult cattle.

NON US citizens CAN take part in this:

Urge USDA to close the loophole allowing cruelty to sick calves »

The enforcement action comes after federal officials reviewed a legal complaint and video footage provided by The HSUS showing serious and systematic violations of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. The investigation included compelling evidence of:

Still-conscious calves struggling while hanging upside down on a conveyor belt;

Calves being shot numerous times before reaching unconsciousness;

A truck driver dragging a downed calf with a chain around his neck;

Plant managers twisting downed calves’ ears and tails when they were too exhausted or weak to stand, lifting the entire weight of some calves by their tails, and telling employees never to do the same when USDA inspectors are watching; and

Employees shocking, hitting, and spraying calves with water.

“Downed calves are still suffering the sort of appalling abuses that we exposed in 2009 at another calf slaughter plant in Vermont,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO for The HSUS. “We commend USDA for taking action to shut down the operation at Catelli Brothers, but it’s long past time to close the loophole in the downed animal rule that perpetuates continuing cruelty to young calves.”

Bernie Rollin, distinguished professor of animal science at Colorado State University, watched the video and wrote [PDF], “Of all the atrocity videos I have viewed, the current video of the slaughterhouse at Catelli Brothers must be ranked among the three worst….The conclusion to be drawn from this video data is self-evident. This plant should be closed down immediately….”

Serbia: Activists Now Press Charge on Ministry Regarding Blocking of ‘Jegmec’ Pond Fron ‘Tisa’ River – Thousands of Fish Are Dying.

Serbian Flag

sl.15

25/01/14 UPDATE

Please refer to the copies of the documentation shown below.

The Serbian republic inspection and also the Vojvodina inspectorate have now acted and demanded that the fishes that are still surviving must be moved to the Tisa river immediately.

Serbia fish 1Serbia fish 2

Whilst activists see this as some good news for the fishes that are still alive; they really feel that the actions are still not enough.

They feel that it should be demanded by the inspectorate that all the water in which the fish live should be kept at a good level fo cleanliness.  It should be declared that the persons who have caused this current terrible situation, with so many fish dying, must be made to pay for the water cleaning.  Part of the requirements also will be that a certain water level must be maintained at all times, and that oxygen must be continually provided to the fish in these areas to ensure their survival.   This can really be a natural process IF the water is kept at a good level and also very importantly, if the water is kept clean.

So at the moment a partial result; but activists still feel that not enough is being undertaken for the long term survival and upkeep of the facilities which have the fish.

——————————————————-

Original Article:

Serbian activists have just taken action with the Ministry of Agriculture regarding farm animal welfare conditions – see:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2014/01/20/serbia-serbian-activists-ask-about-the-farms-on-which-animals-are-kept-their-transport-and-also-their-general-welfare-commissioner-gives-ministry-5-days-to-respond/

Now they have yet another issue which they are attempting to get Ministry attention with.

Here again, activists have now undertaken a formal charge against the authorities.

It relates to a river, the ‘Tisa’, which is located in Northern Serbia.  The river is linked directly to a very large pond pool area which is known as the ‘Jegmec’.

There are many thousands of young and old fish in the Jegmec pool.  But very recently, loads of earth arrived in trucks and was dumped across the tributary which links the river Tisa to the Jegmec pool / pond.  Rather than be able to swim to the Tisa from the Jegmec; young fish are now unable to leave the pool as they are trapped there.

Millions of young fish look as if they are going to die.  The weather is warm and the water level in the Jegmec is decreasing all the time.

Japan: Japanese Dolphin Slaughter and Amusement Park Captivity – The Cove – For The So-Called ‘Amusement’ of the Human Species Who Should Know Better Than to Watch Dolphins Doing Tricks at an Amusement Park !!!!

Japan

Japanese Dolphin Slaughter – The Cove

The CovePhoto – APF

SAV Comment 20/1/14Unconfirmed, but we are hearing that the mother of the very rare albino calf killed herself trying to protect her baby from being captured by the Japanese.  We assume that at the moment the baby calf is still alive and will no doubt be sold off to the Marine theme park which makes the biggest financial offer for it.  Boycott everything to do with these pathetic facilities of animal cruelty and abuse.  If people have to go to one of these places to be ‘entertained’, then they must lead very sad and depressing lives !and Japan; we HATE YOU.

(CNN) — More than 200 bottlenose dolphins spent a second day penned in a cove by Japanese fishermen, U.S. conservationists said Sunday, many of them stressed and bloodied from their attempts to escape.

The dolphins will spend a third night without food or rest in Taiji Cove before the fishermen likely start to slaughter them Monday for meat, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said.

Until now, the fishermen have focused on selecting dolphins to be sold into captivity at marine parks and aquariums in Japan and overseas, the conservation group said.

Twenty-five dolphins, including a rare albino calf, were taken on Saturday “to a lifetime of imprisonment,” and another 12 on Sunday, the group said. Two dolphins have died in the process.

Environmental activists have been monitoring activities in the cove in southwest Japan, which is a focal point of the Taiji community’s annual dolphin hunting season.

Although the hunting of dolphins is widely condemned in the west, Japanese defend the practice as a local custom — and say it is no different to the slaughter of other animals for meat.

Caroline Kennedy, the recently installed U.S. ambassador to Japan, tweeted that she is “deeply concerned by inhumaneness of drive hunt dolphin killing.”

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been live-streaming video of events in the cove and posting frequent updates on Twitter.

“Many of the 200+ Bottlenose dolphins who are in still the cove are visibly bloody & injured from their attempts to escape the killers,” one update Sunday said.

Another appealed for people to do their part to end the demand for dolphins captured from the wild.

“Dolphin slaughter in Taiji continues because of the captive trade. Please do not support aquariums & parks with marine mammals,” it said.

England, UK: Live Animal Export Protest At Dover Grow Ever Stronger – People Are Disgusted By The Trade – Photographs and Video Links Below.

England

Dover, Kent, England.

The protests to stop live animal exports to mainland Europe continue to grow stronger all the time.  Here below are a few links to photographs and videos of the demonstrations in recent months.

The really good news is that after stopping all live exports for a period of no less than 6 weeks; the first shipment of 2014 took place on 10th January.  After a break of 6 weeks, a full consignment of livestock transporters was expected for this sailing.

In fact, only 2 livestock transporters arrived.  The vessel which carries them has a capacity of 7 or 8 transporters, so after 6 weeks, the vessel was operating at one quarter of its maximum capacity !

The protests will continue for however long it takes to stop the trade.  Protestors are growing in numbers for every sailing.  The entire export business through Dover is operated by a Dutchman.  The vehicles are Dutch and whole trade is of no benefit to the UK.  Animals are suffering big time on their shipments from the UK to Europe.  The vessel ‘Joline’ which carries the trucks sails between Dover UK and Calais, France.

The last link below shows the two vehicles arriving for the last consignment on the night of 10th/11th January 2014.

Australia: Mass sheep death on horror voyage – it never changes !

australia

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/business/wa/a/20787632/mass-sheep-death-on-horror-voyage/

Mass sheep death on horror voyage

The live export industry is in crisis amid revelations thousands of sheep from farms in WA and the eastern States died in extreme heat during a horror voyage to the Middle East on a ship which was back in Fremantle loading animals in 40C conditions last weekend.

The death of about 4000 sheep exported by Livestock Shipping Services on the Bader 3 has sparked calls for a major overhaul of the live animal trade.

Federal authorities are investigating the deaths, which occurred about five months ago but were not made public. It is believed the sheep, loaded in WA’s winter, died of heat stress over a short period as summer temperatures in the Gulf soared.

Live exporters and livestock producers are already bracing for the fallout from multiple investigations into alleged breaches of animal welfare regulations.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is expected to release a raft of long-awaited findings as early as today.

A number of investigations involve Jordanian-owned LSS, which is based in Perth.

LSS general manager Garry Robinson confirmed yesterday there had been an incident on the Bader 3 in August.

“The incident was unusual and unexpected. It was a normal shipment but an abnormal environmental period,” he said.

Mr Robinson defended the loading of the Bader 3 last weekend, saying DAFF and State officials had monitored the loading.

“We monitored the temperature hourly at the feedlot, on the trucks, at port and on the ship,” he said. “There was a management plan in place and that is part of the normal process.”

DAFF investigates shipments where the on-board mortality rate is above 2 per cent for sheep and 0.5 per cent for cattle. The mortality rate on the Bader 3 shipment was about 5 per cent.
