Egypt – Donkey Sent to Prison for 24 Hours for Stealing Corn !!

Story of the week !

CAIRO (AFP) – An Egyptian donkey has been jailed for stealing corn on the cob from a field belonging to an agricultural research institute in the Nile Delta, local media reported on Thursday.

The ass and its owner were apprehended at a police checkpoint that had been set up after the institute’s director complained that someone was stealing his crops, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily said.

The unnamed ungulate was found in possession of the institute’s corn and a local judge sentenced him to 24 hours in prison. The man who had his ass thrown in jail got off with a fine of 50 Egyptian pounds (nine dollars, six euros).

SAV say – In reality, who is the ‘ass’ ? – the judge who passed sentence or the donkey wanting a bite to eat !

Stop Killing Geese in the Netherlands

Please give your support and signature to Ria’s petition right now –  thanks;
I created this petition against the geese massacre
here in the Netherlands and can use more support on
this, so hope you will sign too.
Its so hard to get a petition reach its goal these
days and here in the Netherlands they will not be
impressed with an international petition with only
over 1000 signatures, so my goal is 5000.
Thank you, Ria.

European Commission – First European Veterinary Week

The European Commission will organise the first European Veterinary week from 10-16 November, in partnership with the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) and the French Presidency.

The week will open with a high level conference in Brussels on 10 November, entitled “One Health: Healthy Animals = Healthy People”. This event aims to stimulate dialogue on successful information diffusion and cooperation between the different players in the animal health field for the implementation of effective bio-security measures at borders and on-farm. It will examine the positive impacts of high animal health standards on human health and consumer wellbeing. Panel discussions will look at issues such as on-farm bio-security, import controls and the “One Health” concept. Participants will include Member State veterinary experts, animal health stakeholders, customs officials, airport and travel organisations, representatives from Parliament and Council, and all relevant Commission services.

Later in the week, the FVE General Assembly in Hanover will gather 800 veterinarians from across Europe. Part of its programme will be devoted to speeches presenting Veterinary Week and its main messages: “One Health” and “Prevention is better than cure.” Specific topics to be raised are the new animal health strategy and what it means to the veterinary practitioner, the importance of a strong veterinary network and how to translate policy into action.
