Hello Everyone,

I know you are all busy and most of you have signed already, but would it be possible for you to forward our petition to your mailing list?  It has 1471 signatures at the moment but for it to make an impact at all we had hoped for a lot more.  We will have to send it to the Scottish First Minister at the end of June as we expect the results of the Public Enquiry to appear later in the Summer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 Many thanks, and best wishes,

Mavis.

Last chance to save Blaikiewell Animal Sanctuary.  Please sign the petition before the 30th June 2009

http://www.gopetition.co.uk/online/22833.html

There are plans to build a Peripheral Route, with a dual carriageway running through our land.

Blaikiewell Animal Sanctuary stands to lose 20 acres and the road would have a devastating effect on the sanctuary and on the environment. There is a strong public feeling that the road is not necessary or in the wrong place and we await the finding of the Public Inquiry held last year, but even if the Reporter recommends that the road should not be built, the Scottish First Minister can overturn his decision. One of our neighbours, Liz Bracegirdle, has drawn up a petition to the Scottish Government.

We are hoping to get a huge number of signatures from all over the world and your help would be so gratefully appreciated.

Dear Charu,

Can you pl help with these cats. Their ‘father’ is an expat who has to leave the country and just cannot take them with him. He leaves 5th June – a formidably short notice I know – but pl see what you can do . I really do not have much contact with good cat people.

There is also a dog to be re homed from the same family but I won’t bother you with him just now since we have a lead which just might work out.

Thank You

Chitrita

Subject: GINGER & SCRATCHY

Hi,

 GINGER & SCRATCHY

Please see picture of cats attached. They are a little bigger than photo now, but just as cute.

Ginger (as in the color)

Ginger is a sterilized male. He’s friendly, outgoing & likes to be around people. He will often come to you for a scratch & play. He likes to walk around the house meowing in the morning, then finds a quite place to sleep & hide for most of the day.

Ginger sometimes picks on his sister & creates a small spat.

Scratchy (black & white, & as in the cartoon on “The Simpsons” Itchy & Scratchy)

Scratchy is a sterilized female. She is quite a shy cat. She likes to be near you, but doesn’t like a lot of scratching & playing. She will though sit on my wife’s lap in quite moments. She spends most of her time sitting curled up in the kitchen to be near my wife.

She’s a good mouser.

She doesn’t like her tummy being scratched, & will instantly push your hand away with her legs.

Other traits

–          They are both adept at catching mice, & occasionally small birds

–          They like to spend some time outdoors, but are just as happy to be inside. We usually leave them in the backroom of our house, & they will go in & out of a window we deliberately leave open

Food

–          They have leftover chicken, beef, rice, occasional vegetables….

–          My wife often buys fresh fish & will mix it with rice as well. They love fish

Activist raid finds pigs ‘eaten alive’ by maggots

“There were open drains everywhere that were seething with maggots.”

A piggery operator in Tasmania has been charged with cruelty offences after animals were found in squalid conditions and infested with maggots.

The farm in northern Tasmania was raided and filmed by an animal welfare activist earlier this year.

Emma Haswell reported her concerns to the RSPCA which told her it would not inspect the farm.

Ms Haswell then called the police and told them she had trespassed.

Police charged the owner of the piggery with several animal cruelty offences and he will appear in court in Scottsdale next week.

The piggery is one of Tasmania’s biggest and is also a supplier to the self-proclaimed Fresh Food People, supermarket giant Woolworths.

Ms Haswell said she was appalled at what she saw, including a sow infested with maggots.

“She can’t move, she’s lying in faeces, mud and maggots,” she said.

“I would never have imagined I’d find an animal in this condition. She’s being eaten alive.”

“The first thing I saw was an Australian Quality Assured pork sign on the entrance to the farm.

“The first thing that stood out to me, obviously the smell and the squalor, the flies, the maggots.

Squalid conditions

“There were open drains everywhere that were seething with maggots.

“There were emaciated sows in stalls that couldn’t move, they had wounds on them, they had enormous abscesses that meant their legs were two or three times the normal size, she said.

The activist called the RSPCA’s chief executive Greg Tredinnick who told her to ring police because the organisation did not operate on weekends.

Animals Australia’s executive director Glenys Oojes says that in almost three decades working in animal welfare she has never seen anything like it.

“The poor pig with maggots infested in the wound was honestly the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” she said.

The piggery is a supplier to Woolworths, but did not have industry accreditation.

The supermarket chain says it has given the operator a list of improvements.

A statement released by Woolworths said:

“Woolworths responded immediately upon being informed with our head livestock buyer arriving in Tasmania within 48 hours to investigate the allegations.”

“We were not happy with the conditions on the farm and provided the supplier with a list of improvements to be met”

Woolworths says it is visiting the farm every fortnight.

Attempts were made to contact the farm owner but calls were not returned.

Australian Pork Industry spokesman Andrew Spencer says he was horrified by the images.

“The farm is not accredited and we’ll be working with Woolworths to make sure that they have confidence in the ongoing supply of the products,” he said.

hi Charu,

I have “rescued” four female pups (4 weeks old now) and am looking for
“good”(ones who don’t discriminate against desis and are financially
and emotionally capable of giving them good care) homes for them.
I have as my pets their brothers Chotu and Motu (about 8 months  old)
who are both large dogs.

Their ad hoc names are Moti(the fat one), Kali, Safedu(the white one),
and i haven’t named the fourth.

They are breast feeding and also on puppy cerelac plus gradually
introducing them to large breed premium puppy food (which we also feed
the mother). Both their parents are large dogs.

We live in NOIDA.

Thanks,
Bramhesh

Egypt Killings: 22/05 Update – WARNING – Disturbing Video Footage

egypt

ciwf

Picture – CIWF

TV Report done by Al-Masry Al-Youm on the culling of pigs in Egypt.

Contains very graphic video of pigs being slaughtered and badly handled.

There has to be a government response to rectify this behaviour and make it unacceptable and punishable by law.
It gives a bad image to Egypt, contradicts the teachings of Islam, is inhuman and barbaric by all the civilized norms and international laws. Australia stopped for a while exporting live sheep to Egypt because of the way the animals were treated and handled before the slaughter. Export by Australia was restarted again recently. This can also affect tourism in Egypt. The treatment of stray animals such as dogs and cats is also on the list of complaints by foreigners who visit or live in Egypt.

All this is causing nothing but damage to Egypt’s already bad animal cruelty reputation abroad.

WARNING – The following video contains very graphic footage of animal suffering.

As each hour passes more pigs are being rounded up and killed.

Philip Lymbery, Compassion’s CEO describes the scenes from Egypt:

“Hundreds of pigs are dragged from their smallholder pens and dumped live and fully conscious into a huge dumper truck. Fighting to breathe, the animals writhe on top of each other. From a distance, the scene almost looks like a tin of maggots. Come closer, and the true horror is clear. The animals are then driven to mass graves where they are covered in caustic chemicals before being buried. Media reports tell of the pigs screaming at the pain of the chemicals for half hour or more before they are dead. This is the intended fate of all of Egypt’s 400,000 pigs.”

So far, 1253 people have joined us in calling for this cruelty to stop but we need thousands more for our concern and anger to be heard. If you can, please use this form to forward this action on to friends, family and colleagues and ask them to lend their voices too.

The true horror of the situation is shown in this film. Please be warned this is DEEPLY DISTURBING footage.

We have just a few days to mobilise public opinion and stop this cruelty.

Compassion is calling on its animal welfare allies from around the world to bring this slaughter to an end. Please ask your friends to join us in our urgent action to end this suffering now.

If you would prefer to email people without using our form the link to send on is: http://www.ciwf.org/egypt

What have we done so far?

  • Yesterday, Compassion’s Philip Lymbery and Joyce D’Silva handed in a strongly worded letter and film to the Egyptian Embassy in London. They also met with Barry O’Neil, President of the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) to lobby him to urgently intervene in Egypt.
  • We have asked our 37 European partners and our international contacts to lobby their Chief Veterinary Officers (CVOs). The CVOs are members of the OIE and will be attending the General Assembly meeting of the OIE in Paris next week.
  • Compassion in World Farming joins the Egyptian Society of Animal Friends (ESAF) to strongly urge the Egyptian Government to end this horrific killing immediately and we offer ESAF our full support in the campaign for humane treatment of Egypt’s pigs.
  • Compassion in World Farming is working together with its partners at RSPCA and WSPA to strengthen the call to end the dreadful suffering taking place in Egypt right now. All three organisations are using all our collective influence to persuade both the Egyptian authorities and the OIE to halt the brutal killing of these animals, and to ensure that they can be assured of a humane future.

Thank you for all your help.

TAKE ACTION AGAINST THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT’S SCANDALOUS PIG SLAUGHTER

Link:  CIWF (Uk): http://www.ciwf.org.uk/news/factory_farming/egyptian_government_cruel_pig_slaughter.aspx

Appalling scenes of horrendous mass pig killing taking place in Egypt right now have sparked international protest. From media footage, we have seen hundreds of live pigs being thrown on top of each other into huge dumper trucks. Some must surely suffocate right away or break their limbs. They are then driven to a mass grave, thrown into it and covered in what appears to be quicklime, where they must endure a slow and agonising death.

Egyptian media reports that “When each lorry is filled with 400 pigs on average, it sets off for the burial ground in Abou Zabal. Once there, something like soft sand is sprinkled on the pigs inside the lorry. This material is made up of factory wastes. The pigs start to scream because of the searing pain until they die some 30 or 40 minutes later.”

Before you play the film, be warned this is DEEPLY DISTURBING footage:
watch here

What is Compassion doing?

We are protesting in person at the Egyptian Embassy in London today and calling on the Ambassador to urge his government to halt the slaughter immediately.

We are calling on the World Animal Health Organisation (the OIE) to urge its member state, Egypt, to halt the slaughter and to abide by the OIE Guidelines on humane slaughter, which Egypt endorsed in 2005.

How can you help?

Please write urgently to the Egyptian Ambassador in your own country, calling for a halt to this inhumane killing. Please point out that such inhumane treatment of animals not only contravenes the OIE Guidelines but is also contrary to Islamic teaching which regards animals as “communities like you” (Qur’an 6:38).

Please email the Egyptian Ambassador to the UK here.
