Boycott the SA World Cup
South Africa wants to promote to the world how good the World Cup will be in SA, but when it comes to animal abuses in SA, they keep very, very quiet. Civilised ? – doubt it.
Previous SAV post on this issue:
PLEASE CIRCULATE INTERNATIONALLY – “TRADITION” of ABUSE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE RIGHTS OF A SENTIENT CREATURE !!!!
News on the court ruling just out. The bull will die tomorrow….sadly, I think we all knew that torture in the name of tradition would be the victor.
Please circulate far and wide.
It has been a long hard battle which was twisted in to an irrelevant, unnecessary and ugly tale about imperialism and racism. In the end the bull ARA fought for so valiantly and passionately has received a death sentence and will be killed tomorrow when a bunch of young men converge on him with their bare hands.
Please light a candle not in just in honour of the bull, but of the fight we fight each day and the victims of humanity.
For Immediate Release: 4 December 2009
THINK OF THE BULL TOMORROW
Animal Rights Africa (ARA) is extremely disappointed that the Judge ruled against us. We are also saddened and frustrated that the Respondents refused to allow ARA to monitor and document the ukweshwama ritual.
ARA has not seen the Judgment as yet but we will be studying it with a view to what our next steps will be. It is a sad fact that attempts at dialogue with the Zulu Royal Household, the Commission on and the relevant government departments fell on deaf ears and that this issue landed up in the courts. ARA will also continue to seek dialogue on this issue and we therefore call on all these entities and the ANC to urgently facilitate such dialogue.
That ARA lost this case is distressing to us, however this pales into insignificance for us in comparison to the fact that the fate is sealed for the innocent bull that will be used in the ritual tomorrow.
As part of a global movement that cuts across all continents, all cultures all ethnic and racial groups, ARA will continue to work for compassion, respect, dignity and inclusive justice.
We ask that people across South Africa, Africa and the world that have shown concern for the fate of this particular bull light a candle between 12pm and 3pm tomorrow (Saturday 5th December) and spend the day in reflection and introspection, in solidarity and compassion with this particular bull.
Ends.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” Martin Luther King
Like all animals, cows and bulls value their lives and don’t want to die. Stories abound of cows who have gone to extraordinary lengths to fight for their lives. They are as diverse as cats, dogs, and people: Some are bright; others are slow learners. Some are bold and adventurous; others are shy and timid. Some are friendly and considerate; others are bossy and devious. They can be highly intelligent, moderately so, or slow to understand; friendly, considerate, aggressive, docile, inventive, dull, proud, or shy. According to recent research, in addition to having distinct personalities, they are generally very intelligent animals who can remember things for a long time. Animal behaviourists have found that cows interact in socially complex ways, developing friendships over time, sometimes holding grudges against cows who treat them badly, forming social hierarchies within their herds, and choosing leaders based upon intelligence. They are emotionally complex as well and have the capacity to worry about the future. They are intelligent and curious beings who enjoy solving problems and interacting with their environment. They have long memories and are capable of learning lessons from each other, just as humans do.
Animal Rights Africa has named the bull who will be killed tomorrow during the Ukweshwmama ritual, angasoze akakhohlwa ,which means “he who will not be forgotten”.
Please think about him – today, tomorrow and always.
