Hi everyone;

And thanks to many of you who have kindly left comments on the site.  Please note that although your name and comment may not be listed under the most ‘Recent Comments’ area on the right side of the site, you can view a lot more recent comments by going down to ‘Comments RSS’ which is under ‘Meta’ just above our world map showing visitors.

For example, on Friday 18/10/13 we have had 2,657 visitors to the site; and today (19/10) we have had 1,084 which is fantastic for a weekend day; so naturally it is impossible with this amount of visitors to respond to all comments individually.

We have had some comments about ‘follow ups’ on some stories we have covered.  For some things follow ups are almost impossible to get; but you may wish to search around more using Google search etc and who knows, with some of these posts you may find more updated news.  SAV attempts to publish updates when possible, but follow ups are sometimes difficult to get.

We get comments left by bloggers who are either running their own site, or thinking about setting something up.  And so I will try and give a few general points here which may answer the issues raised by many people who leave comments.

So here goes:

Hello there! Do you use Twitter? I’d like to follow you if that would be ok.
I’m undoubtedly enjoying your blog and look forward
to new updates.

I am really loving the theme/design of your blog.
Do you ever run into any internet browser compatibility problems?
A number of my blog visitors have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer
but looks great in Safari. Do you have any advice to help fix this problem?

Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the images on this blog
loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem
on my end or if it’s the blog. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There are some great free blog sites around – take advantage of them.

At SAV, we use WordPress – http://wordpress.com/    so I would strongly suggest to use this.

http://wordpress.org/showcase/  – there are loads of formats to choose from for your site, you can really give your site a professional feel.

The global map or Clustrmap is free and you can sign up to getting one from our own map – just click on our par site on the left hand side and you will be taken to a bigger map – and underneath the world map there is a registration window where you  can register for a clustrmap.  Or click here:  http://www4.clustrmaps.com/counter/maps.php?user=9b44b4e0

http://www.clustrmaps.com/getone.php

You probably wont need it for any individual ‘personal’ blog site, but we like to add flags representing nations for any issues that we cover.  All our flags for each post are copied over into ‘My pictures’ from the global flags website – http://www.flags.net/mainindex.htm

Just select your country required from the A-Z index and then when the flag appears, copy it onto ‘My Pictures’ and store for future use.

Most of our images are via the massive animal welfare / rights network global network that we are part of.  We are sent many stories and issues every day, but you can always use Google images to find an image you may want.  Just watch copyright though – sometimes much best to credit the photographer, especially if a newspaper image is used.

Unfortunately we are not on Twitter (yet).

There is an SAV Facebook site which can be accessed via the following. We have over 1,000 animal welfare members and supporters, so why not sign up to become yet another ?:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2013/10/08/sav-facebook-join-up-with-us-and-explore-a-whole-lot-more-for-stray-animals-and-their-welfare-campaigns/

Do we have internet browser compatibility problems?

Not as far as we can tell ! – everything works fine via WordPress and we think that people can just put any keyword or words into their browser and then chances are we may pop up as one of the sites.  Things that people may use to find us are for example:

– russian teenager kills a poor puppy

– animal cruelty stories 2011

– horses in bullfighting

As I am very much associated with live animal transport investigations here in the UK for animals going to mainland EU, and the fact that I am also involved as the EU Correspondent for ‘KAALE’ which is based in my home county of Kent, England; we have now decided to crosspost some SAV posts over onto the KAALE site also.  As we are all volunteers, this saves on lots of time and simply throws the visitor from say the KAALE web site over to SAV to get more information.

KAALE is solely dedicated to live animals exports – a major campaign issue of mine for some 25 years now.

England: Badger Update – ? Now Badgers To Be Gassed ? – Pro Hunt Paterson and Cameron Go From ‘Farce’ To ‘Shambles’, To ‘Inept’, But Conveniently Stay As Multi Millionaires – “We are all in this together” – hmm !

See our recent badger post at:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2013/10/15/uk-england-badger-cull-snippets-the-government-increase-kill-time-to-meet-failed-animal-numbers/

The Conservative Party / Owen Paterson fiasco on badgers just gets worse, even farcical,

by the day.

Today, 17/10/13, the ‘normal’ UK consumer, who under this government has had pay increases kept to normally ‘zero %’ over the last few years, has now been informed by two major gas and electricity suppliers (to the UK), that they are going to increase their costs to consumers by between 8% and around 10.2%.

The government, Mr Cameron’s and Paterson’s government, are doing nothing to stop this other than tell people to change their supplier; to another company who will no doubt in the next few weeks follow the first two and increase their costs also.

Devoid of any real steps to support his claims that badgers are spreading TB, – yes he is NOT even having those badgers killed in the cull TESTED to find out they even carry the disease !! – Owen Paterson is now considering the possibility of culling the badgers by gassing them.

Here is the word from the press on 11th October:

Paterson gas badgers

No doubt that Paterson will once again start blaming the badgers for ‘moving the goalpost’ rather than blame his own his farcical, inept, ludicrous government department for what is becoming all the more known ‘Badgershambles’ given to the British public each day.

But with the Conservative government allowing gas prices to increase so much without taking any real action to prevent the British public from being screwed by an additional £150 per year on their heating bills, taking the average to about £1,400 per year, the word from camp badger is:

 cambadger gas bills

‘We are all in this together’, so the Cameron led government keeps telling the UK public.

Well not quite really; we are not all multi millionaires as per the vast majority of Conservative government politicians who ‘lead’ the normal working man on the street.

Here is a typical profile of Mr Richard Benyon, just one of Cameron’s fellow Conservatives.

Richard Benyon - typical Tory MP

Mr Benyon keeps 3 aircraft on his estate; just like we all do.

What is he worth ? – around £110 MILLION so we are informed.

He has a 20,000 acre estate on which he lives.

And yet, we are informed by Cameron that ‘we are all in this together’.

The question is, what plane do I take from my humble abode of 10,000 acres today to go shopping down the town ?

Multi millionaire Conservatives telling the normal man to just put up and shut up, because ‘he understands how people are feeling the pinch’

Oh yeah !; and pigs might fly !

16/10/13: With NO Response From the Serbian Government To His Letter of 2/8/13; (UK Green Party) MEP Mr. Taylor Continues To Work With SAV and Serbian Campaigners For Further Action Helping Stray Animals in Serbia.

Serbian Flag

Please read our previous post on the dedicated work of Mr Keith Taylor MEP; for South East England,  who has worked with SAV and Serbian campaigners to obtain further information about the situation for Serbian stray animals. – Read our post of 7th August by clicking on the following link:

A copy of the letter sent by Keith to the Serbian government is provided below.  You can also see a copy by accessing Keith’s web site which can be found via the following;

Keith says – “As a candidate country for the EU I am urging the Serbian government to improve enforcement of and introduce stronger animal welfare policy.” –

See more at: http://www.keithtaylormep.org.uk/2013/08/08/keith-calls-for-action-on-street-dogs-in-serbia/#sthash.rJv2bgut.dpuf

Keith’s letter to the Serbian government was sent on 2nd August 2013.  Over the past few weeks we have been corresponding with Keith’s team regarding further news and updates.  We can confirm that as of 16th October 2013 (16/10/13), Mr Taylor has still not had any response from the Serbian authorities regarding his letter of 2nd August.

As a candidate country seeking membership of the EU, failing to respond to the documented requests of an MEP in the EU Parliament for well over 2 months is not exactly the best way forward for the Serbian governmentPossibly it is that know, like us, that they are breaking the Serbian laws, but they do not wish to show this in a response to Mr. Taylor; and so they refuse to respond.

With all our recent campaign experiences within Romania (already an EU member state); we are continuing to promoter the fact that like Romania, Serbia should not be allowed to join the EU until is has become compliant with the EU membership requirements and shown full compliance with its own (Serbian) legal legislation – the rule of law.  Proving that this is being complied with is a fundamental requirement for any nation wishing to obtain EU accession (membership).

As Romania is also corrupt with its political system, we have no hesitation in calling for a full EU investigation into the current Romanian situation regarding where all the EU money for stray dog and cat management has gone.  We are happy to call for Romania to be removed from the EU is its government do not change and invest the money provided by the EU into animal population management rather than into the back pockets of politicians who then pass laws which allows a frenzied mass killing of all stray animals in the country.

If necessary, we will work with EU MEP’s to ask for a full review to be undertaken regarding the situation in Serbia prior to any EU accession.  As our good friends and fellow campaigners in Serbia are informing us, there is no change to the way stray animals are being treated by the government, despite there being laws which should provide them with protection.

Animals caught by shinters are being kept for just a short time in non adequate city ‘shelters’; which are anything but in reality.  There, animals often kill each other.  Animals are killed in the shelters by the use of T-61 which causes respiratory paralysis – the animals suffocate to death as they cannot breathe.  Public garbage firms continue to take money from the public taxes for catching stray animals – they kill them with no management or population control policy.  It is a very big and profitable business for some to be in, and this includes politicians – who wish to pocket money for animal management programmes and just keep on killing which is now against Serbian national legislation.

There are 25 regions in Serbia each with republic veterinary departments.  They all work on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture.  Not one of these 25 regions in Serbia has any lawful programme for the humane control and population management of stray dog and cat populations.  Government corruption overrides the welfare of animals as we have seen in some other EU states.  At present, Serbian campaigners are waiting to obtain a verdict from the Constitutional court re the matter of Subotica’s (one of the Serbian regions) programme, or non existent programme for stray animal management.  Any non existent programme is in direct violation of the existing Serbian legislation for stray animal management – Articles 7 and 15 of the Serbian animal welfare laws.

We will inform you of further news when it happens.

Links to just some of our recent past Romanian / EU campaign:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2013/09/30/romania-30913-get-romania-out-of-the-eu-video-sample-letter-to-copy-and-send-to-the-european-parliament-additional-petition-at-end/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2013/10/07/eu-romania-this-woman-is-an-insult-to-the-name-eu-animal-welfare-intergroup-we-want-her-out/

As we say, welfare campaigners in Serbia have now written to the Ministry of Agriculture requesting that they be sent a full listing of / documentation associated with all cat and dogs shelters within Serbia; and as with the requirements of the new legislation, information of the condition of each of these shelters.

It will be very interesting to see what, if any, response, is given back to the campaigners by the Ministry.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/2013/08/27/serbia-27813-campaigners-now-ask-agriculture-ministry-for-full-listing-of-serbian-cat-and-dog-shelters-in-accordance-with-the-law/

In the meantime, we are (as of 16/10/13) now moving further with MEP Mr. Taylor, providing him with updates of the current situation in Serbia.  Ashe has had no response from the Serbian government in two and one half months to his original letter, we can thus say that the Serbian government must have something to hide – hence we consider they should not be allowed EU membership until they come ‘fully clean’ on their approach to stray animal management.

Mr. Talor MEP will with our help, will be further writing to the Serbian government on this issue.

This time, Mr. Taylor will be able to give representation and names of many other MEP’s in the EU who now want to see exactly what is going on for stray animals in Serbia.  We will continue to work with our elected politicians in the EU to find out what we can about the full stray animal situation within Serbia.  At some point, the Serbian government will have to respond or face pressure to keep them out of the EU.  The choice is theirs.

SAV have an obligation to expose corrupt governments who are not protecting stray animals; be it in Serbia, Romania, or anywhere else where we can obtain information.

Mr. Taylor MEP is today (16/10/13) being provided with additional information of the current Serbian government inactivity; something he now knows well due to not having any response to his official letter of 2nd August 2013.

We wish to thank Keith for all his hard work on the issue of Serbian stray animals.

As Serbia is not currently an EU member state, Keith does not have to work on this issue; but he does, as like us, he wishes to see a fair deal for stray animals wherever they may live.

Thank you Keith !

government_approved 2On Mon 7th Oct, after 6 weeks of night-time shooting, the marksmen’s guns fell silent and the Somerset badger cull officially ended.

BUT the government (David Cameron and his stable mate Owen Paterson) has said they’ll extend the cull by 3 weeks in order to try and achieve the target figure.

Brian May Badgers

Above – Badger and animal voice – Brian May (Queen guitarist)

Back in 2008 The Badger Trust welcomed the decision of Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg not to back a cull of badgers in a futile attempt to control bovine TB in cattle.   Mr Clegg said of the recent badger culling trials: The bias and evidence of that 10 year review was badger culls simply move the problem to other areas.  It only appeared to work in the cases they looked at where you had full badger cull hemmed in by coast or river boundaries. “Secondly Defra just doesn’t have the money to do it.  We can’t move forward in the absence of clearer evidence and in the absence of better resources for Defra.”

Officers policing the badger culls in England have been accused of “highly questionable” actions by civil liberties lawyers after they told protesters their personal details would be passed to the National Farmers’ Union and handed out NFU-produced leaflets about the union’s civil injunction.  The NFU, which represents the private companies carrying out the cull, obtained a civil injunction prohibiting harassment of people linked to the cull, as well as the blowing of whistles and waving of torches to disrupt shooting. Gwendolen Morgan, a solicitor at Bindmans, said: “The police‘s actions here appear highly questionable. The passing of personal information to a private body, without any apparent legal basis, is a serious concern. Since when did the police become the enforcers of the NFU’s civil injunction?”   The NFU’s relationship with the government is also causing controversy, after Defra refused to disclose information on the cull on the grounds that communications with the NFU constituted “internal communications”.

badgers north west hunt sabs

Humane?  Fresh doubt has been cast on the humaneness of the pilot badger cull after a Somerset councillor claimed a “steady trickle of botched kills” has been found outside the zone. Mike Rigby, an independent county councillor representing Bishops Lydeard on the edge of the cull area, fears injured badgers are not being killed instantly, as the Government claims, but are escaping and dying elsewhere.

 badgers animal aid.org.uk

High policing costs already mean that the cull is more expensive than a badger vaccination programme, according to one expert analysis. Then there is the possible cost to civil liberties being incurred by the cull. Finally, the pilot culls are failing even on their own terms, as far too few badgers are being shot. All this leads to an obvious question: when the costs outweigh the benefits, isn’t it time to stop? Damian Carrington, The Guardian Oct 1st

badgers this is somerset.co.uk

Cull stupid – The ongoing cull of badgers, intended to curb tuberculosis in cattle, is stupid; it has already been shown to be ineffective as a policy; and the Government is surely only doing it to shut farmers up, rather than out of any conviction that it will do any good. Lord (John) Krebs, the president of the British Science Association and the former chairman of the British Food Standards Agency, ran a well-designed 10-year trial into badger culling. “The science is as clear-cut as it can be,” he told Radio 4’s The Life Scientific earlier this year, “and it shows that culling badgers is not a very effective way of reducing TB in cattle.”

Assault arrest – Gloucestershire police have arrested a man after a late-night incident in which a badger cull protester is alleged to have been assaulted and her car dented and wing mirrors ripped off.  Meg Jones, a badger cull protester, was with 2 other activists who were monitoring a badger sett when they heard shooting in the area.

The group split up to look for the marksmen, with the aim of disrupting the shooting.  Ms Jones said she was following a public footpath when a car with 4 men in it pulled up beside her. “2 got out the car and were shouting and screaming at me,” she said.  She alleges that the men tried to stop her calling the police. “One of the men was shaking my shoulders and hitting my arm, trying to prevent me from making a call to the police,” she said. “I backed away, screaming my lungs off. I was pretty scared. I was on my own; I thought I was going to get beaten up.”

When she got back to her car, parked on a nearby road, it had been vandalised. When Ms Jones and one of the other activists tried to photograph the incident, they were assaulted by one of the men in the car, she claimed. “We tried to take photos of the men and I went towards their car with a male companion. A man with a beard jumped out of the car to try and get our phones. He was attacking my friend, had him in a body lock bear hug, punching him in the head. I was totally terrified.”  Roger Warner, master of the Ledbury Hunt, who is alleged to have been present at the altercation, has declined to comment.  Gloucestershire Police said officers working as part of Operation Themis were called to an incident around 11.30pm. A 38-year-old man from the Gloucester area was arrested on suspicion of common assault. He has been bailed until 4 Nov. 27 Sept

 badgers

A programme to vaccinate badgers is forging ahead as Hampshire & Isle of Wight Trust fight back against the Whitehall cull. Late last year the Trust launched an urgent Badger Vaccination Appeal to raise £45,000 for a care package to protect local badgers and cattle from Bovine tuberculosis. And volunteers around W. Cornwall. Licensed volunteers trapped and vaccinated 7 badgers against the disease at a horse sanctuary near Pendeen.

Badger culling is to be banned on Derbyshire County Council land. The Labour-led authority has made the decision on the back of scientific evidence which suggests a badger cull would actually increase the spread of bovine tuberculosis. Hampshire councillors too overwhelmingly backed a motion to ban badger culling on county-owned land. And in Sussex the Green administration at Brighton and Hove City Council said it will look to block any proposed culling in the city and surrounding Downland should the Government look to expand the programme from its current pilot test area.

Labour figures in the city have also called on the Government to axe their plans to cull badgers across the UK.  Sussex Wildlife Trust has already announced that it would not support any cull on its land although doubts have been raised by Government officials whether any locally stated ban would be enforceable.  Hove Tory MP Mike Weatherley signed an early day motion registering concerns about the cull and calling on Environment secretary to hold a Commons vote before any decision on a wider roll-out of the pilot badger cull is taken. He said: “Although I understand that many people are concerned about the effect that Bovine TB is having on farmers, I am not convinced that the culling of badgers is the right approach.

The first photographs have emerged of what appears to be a badger killed in the controversial culls. Secret World Wildlife Rescue, the Somerset-based animal charity that released the photographs of the badger, said it had been delivered to them by people on an overnight ‘badger patrol’ who reported seeing marksmen searching for the badger’s body in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Defra told the Guardian it was “confident” that the animal had not been killed as part of the cull because all the badgers killed so far had died “instantly.” Dr Elizabeth Mullineaux, who is a consultant to the charity and has been a clinical vet for 17 years, said: “A single shot has entered left-hand side of the chest, slightly behind the Defra target area. Rather than going through perpendicular therefore to the heart and lungs, it went diagonally and out the side.”  X-rays of the animal showed fragments of the bullet, and what appeared to be “one track” between one entry and one exit point. She was of the opinion just one bullet had been used, leaving the stomach and liver lobe coming out of the “sizeable” exit hole.  She said it was hard to say how long the animal was alive for after being shot, apart from the fact it had time to take flight. The badger’s body will be post-mortemed and then DNA-checked to see if it matched DNA records of badgers within the zone, which were taken by Defra before the cull began.

Please listen to this talk on Sat 7th Sept at the Taunton anti badger cull march by Dominic Dyer, who works for Care for the Wild and Born Free. There is a great deal of really important information in his talk that we can use against the badger cull and we should share this as widely as we possibly can. You will be surprised by some of the information. There is also a short contribution by the Director of the Badger Trust, Geoff Hayden. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mxVO4-U3EU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D1mxVO4-U3EU&nomobile=1

Secretive cull

I was pulled over by police twice in the space of 20 minutes last week for being “intimidating”. The second time officers said they had received a call from a member of the public who felt harassed by me. This member of the public was a large bloke driving a pick-up truck which was almost certainly laden with a high-calibre rifle. I was in a people carrier, armed only with a torch. He was enjoying an evening of paid employment killing badgers. I was enjoying an evening of paid employment seeking to discover a few details about the offensively secretive badger cull currently unfolding in the English countryside.

In an incident entirely typical of this cull, the gunman was helped to do his job by the police, who conveniently prevented me from doing mine. On both occasions, officers held me for far longer than it was necessary, to establish I was not breaking any law. This delay enabled the badger cullers to drive away into the darkness and continue their work without having to suffer the terror of a journalist. Farmers in the cull zone are doing themselves a huge disservice with their silence. Country dwellers complain how city types are utterly ignorant of their way of life, but without farmers’ voices it is impossible for the public to understand their point of view….. The people who really should be speaking, however, are Defra and Natural England.

This is supposedly a pilot cull but we do not have any information about how many badgers have been killed so far, how many have been injured, how the marksmen are ensuring clean kills, who is checking the badger body bags, how fiddling the figures or fraud will be prevented, whether there have been incidences of “unofficial” culling, and many other important details. How can we be sure they are doing these proper checks?Extract from The Guardian 12th Sept by Patrick Barkham

No “humane” criteria – The Government’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Nigel Gibbens, admitted there is “no definitive criteria” for measuring how humane the current pilot operations are.  He has admitted that ministers will have no hard and fast rules on what constitutes a humane kill when they come to decide whether the pilot badger cull has been a success. Defra has previously insisted any decision to roll the pilots out nationwide will significantly depend on whether killings have been humane.

This is supposed to be a scientifically monitored trial, but claims are being made that cannot be tested – sometimes frankly incredible claims, such as that the shooters are having a 100% clean kill rate.

A zoologist on patrol tells me that international studies of free shooting generally show “clean kill” rates of free-running wildlife less than 90%. “The highest I know of was a 92% rate of killing impala in S. Africa. And that was in daylight.” Badgers surely are being wounded and crawling away to die in agony.

Inspector sacked – A farm inspector from Somerset who tweeted critical comments about the badger cull has been sacked after the NFU complained to ministers about her views. Janice Holland had worked for the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) since 2001, visiting farms to ensure claims for agricultural grants were not being falsified.

She made a series of remarks on Twitter suggesting she had serious concerns about animal welfare and that the cull was poorly conceived and executed. Ms Holland, who has 22 years’ service with government farming agencies, referred to Peter Kendall, the union’s president, as “Kim Jong Kendall” – a reference to the North Korean leader and a name already in use among anti-badger-cull protesters.

Defra said the NFU was a “stakeholder” and RPA staff should not criticise it in public. Labour MP Barry Sheerman said the sacking was “shameful”. This is Devon. 1 Oct

 Badger goirls

Dog attacked – ‘Camp Badger’ was in shock after a deliberate, unprovoked and viscous attempt to kill Ziggy, one of the dogs at Camp Badger, who was guarding a badger sett. He was lured away by men who made a deliberate attempt to kill him by severing his femoral artery with a knife.  Luckily the dog managed to escape but still sustained 2 knife wounds and was taken to a vet.

May the name of Escott Farm forever live in infamy!
