Dear Mark,
California’s endangered marine wildlife like sperm whales are being harmed and killed by the incredibly wasteful California driftnet fishery for swordfish. It tosses back, dead and injured, almost two-thirds of its catch, so for every fish caught two are tossed back to the ocean, unlikely to survive. But with your help, we are fighting to end this fishery.
This week the Pacific Fisheries Management Council will begin meeting to discuss the fate of the fishery. In advance of the meeting, Turtle Island Restoration Network submitted our petition with over 6,000 signatures by activists like you, on it calling on the Council to phase out the deadly fishery.
If you haven’t signed the petition, please sign now!
There is still time to do so by clicking here.
In addition to submitting the petition, I will be traveling to Spokane on Friday to speak in front of the Council, and demand that they put a stop to the use of drift gillnets in California.
Please lend your support for California marine wildlife by making a donation on our secure website. Your donation will be used to protect sperm whales, sea turtles and other wildlife from entanglement and death in drift gillnets.
Thank you for taking action and working with me to safeguard California’s oceans.
Sincerely,
Doug Karpa
