Monsanto Charged with Chemically Poisoning Farmer

Three years ago a French farmer sued Monsanto and won, stating that the company’s pesticide product known as Lasso had poisoned him, causing neurological problems. The company appealed the court decision by taking the lawsuit to a higher French court. Just days ago, the French court upheld the original decision that Monsanto’s product Lasso poisoned the French farmer, causing his neurological concerns.
While it is likely that Monsanto will appeal the court decision yet again, the victory is being celebrated by many people worldwide as one that sets a precedent for future rulings against the biotechnology giant. Monsanto no longer sells Lasso in the United States, Canada, Britain, France or Belgium, citing commercial reasons for phasing out the product in these markets.

Lasso was specifically an herbicide—used to destroy weeds and grasses—marketed to farmers. In the U.S. government’s own Health and Human Services Household Products Database, Lasso is warned to cause blindness, respiratory irritation, liver damage, kidney damage, eye nerve inflammation, jaundice, bladder inflammation, the destruction of red blood cells and blood in urine, as well as other serious health effects.
The U.S. government’s database is self-regulated, meaning that companies report whether their own products are toxic, and if so, in which ways. As a result, the database includes little toxicity information about its product Roundup. The database reports that Monsanto has not provided any information about any possible chronic health effects from use of or exposure to Roundup. However, the company warns: “When using [Roundup] do not eat, drink or smoke. Wash hands thoroughly after handling or contact. Thoroughly clean equipment after use. Do not contaminate drains, sewers and water ways when disposing of equipment rinse water.” Yet, because the product is sprayed on soil, it finds its way into water ways and sewers.
Monsanto now focuses its attention on manufacturing and distributing other pesticide products like Roundup as well as genetically-modified seeds. Roundup has also received international attention. In the spring of this year, the World Health Organization indicated that glyphosate—an ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup—as well as other pesticides are probable carcinogens to humans. While the research confirming that the pesticides cause cancer was conducted by a team of nineteen international cancer scientists and published in The Lancet, a peer-reviewed medical journal, the company demanded a retraction from the World Health Organization, claiming the research to be “junk science.”
While it is not clear yet how the French farmer will be remunerated for his neurological illness that includes memory loss, stammering and headaches, Monsanto’s lawyer indicates that the company will appeal the decision again. Stay posted to find out how the lengthy lawsuits will end.

8/8/17 Update – when we originally exposed this the Serbian government denied that it had ever happened. Mark wrote to the EU about it (you can see the response in the following link) and when questioned by the EU, the Serb government admitted that it had happened.
As a typical Serbian government act of revenge against animals and activists, they, the government, then tried to then take action against animal shelters in Serbia by trying to close them down.
This is why we get no positive action from the Serbian government over anything we try to do to help animals ! – they are the government, they know better than us, or so they think. How very typical of so many governments around the globe.
Here are the links to our posts on this which gives more information. Mark.

Original Post Information:
Breaking News ! – Serbia exporting Live Animals To Israel
As if the world has not gone crazy enough with live animal exports, now it appears the pathetic Serbian government want to get in on the act. The photographs sum up the Serbian governments concern for animal welfare full stop; be it stray animals, farm animals or export animals. They simply do NOT CARE ABOUT THE WELFARE OF ANIMALS.
We have just been provided with some disturbing news from our colleagues at CIWF here in England. http://www.ciwf.org.uk/
It appears that Serbia is exporting live sheep and lambs to Israel. From what we know and see; conditions have been terrible and many animals have died due to the extreme temperatures.
We have made contact with our Serbian campaigners about this and we are now waiting for further news. We are sure these (possibly first of many) shipments are linked at all with Eid which is happening soon.
There have been no live exports from the UK for several months; but over the last week there have been three shipments of live sheep for slaughter in Europe due to the Eid festival. Another shipment of sheep is expected from Ramsgate port in England tomorrow – 19/9. Shipment from the UK are all organised and undertaken by a Dutch exporter named Onderwater.
Reports state:
The first documentation of live transport by air, arriving at Ben Gurion Airport.
About 1500 young lambs were sent on Wednesday from Serbia to Israel, and from there, in one of the worst heat waves this country has known, by four trucks only, onward to the Qalandiya checkpoint, their next stop being slaughter houses in Ramallah, for the occasion of Eid el-Adha.
Several lambs died from heat exhaustion and the overcrowded conditions. A conspiracy of silence just prevents us from reporting the exact number of deaths in this agonizing journey.
The air and sea live transports continue at the expense of the innocent

12.08.2015 German authorities take action based on our complaint about Hefter
On May 1st a team from Eyes on Animals and Animal Welfare Foundation was in Poland and observed a livestock truck from the German company “Hefter”, loaded with young Lithuanian calves. The truck was parked at the WIMA control post where the driver was supposed to unload, rest and feed the young animals properly.
Instead he left the animals on board for over 9 hours and then just continued on the journey. The animals were never unloaded or fed.
We alerted the NVWA in the Netherlands. They were terrific and sent out a team to stop this truck should it enter the Netherlands. In the end the truck went to Belgium. EonA and AWF sent a complaint and request for investigation into the matter to the Belgian authorities and the German authorities from the region where Hefter is registered. Today we received news from the German Ministry that they were in contact with the Belgian, Lithuanian and Polish authorities based on our complaint and after checking the navigation print-outs confirmed that the animals were not unloaded as legally required. They have thanked us for our tip and are taking action against Hefter.
Pet Dogs to be “Clubbed to Death”

In Jinan, China, the small Dayang New District has recently outlawed dogs as animal companions. Citing complaints from residents, the government posted a notice that all families must, “Deal with it on your own, or else the committee will organizes people to enter your home and club the dog to death right there.”
Obviously, this is outrageous.
The Chinese government, however, is no stranger to the mass killings of dogs. Such measures have been previously ordered to eliminate stray dog populations, often stemming from the fear of rabies.
This latest atrocity, however, targets both stray and companion dogs, vaccinated and unvaccinated. It appears to be the knee-jerk reaction to complaints regarding dog feces throughout the area. One “unidentified worker” with the District stated, “Dogs are always defecating all over the place and bothering people. A lot of people were complaining so we wrote a public notice to avoid a conflict.”
It’s amazing that the apparent solution is killing, not starting a “pick up dog poop” policy. Please speak up for these dogs today!

Targets: BLM Director Neil Kornze and Deputy Inspector General Mary Kendall
Goal:
Stop the unnecessary suffering and death of America’s wild horses.
A group of over 200 wild horses west of Las Vegas were found to be enduring starvation conditions on and around federal land, and 28 have since died at human hands. When the BLM found the emaciated mustangs, who were in their charge, they opted to kill a score of the exhausted and hungry creatures. We need to pool our voices in demanding a federal investigation regarding the decision-making process responsible for the death of these majestic animals and the conditions under which they came to be starving in the first place.
The herd was found some 30 miles west of Las Vegas near the BLM-administered Red Rock Canyon National Park. The federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for administering the land as well as “protect[ing] and manag[ing] wild horses and burros,” according to the BLM’s own website. The New York Times reported that the BLM justified their decision on the grounds that the horses had apparently been reduced to eating “desert shrubs” with “little or no nutritional value” after being forced to travel “10 or more miles” to find any sustenance because of “extreme drought and lack of forage.” As a result, 28 of the equestrian climate refugees were so close to starvation by the time the BLM happened upon them that BLM officials saw fit to “euthanize” them.
When the BLM’s response to starving horses is lethal, there is cause for rigorous investigation and firm reaction. We are observing a gross mismanagement of one of our most treasured domestic wildlife populations either 1) directly through BLM neglect and misconduct, or 2) through allowing climate change to proceed in such an unfettered fashion that ending dozens of innocent lives was in fact the least of all evils. It is imperative that the Department of the Interior, the BLM’s parent agency, conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and make swift, sweeping changes to BLM practices in order to protect and manage wild horses and their habitats.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Director Kornze and Deputy Inspector General Kendall,
This September, over 200 wild horses on and around federal lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management were found to be starving to death, due to drought and depletion of foraging stocks. Agents of the Bureau of Land Management went on to kill 28 of these wild horses that the Bureau has a duty to protect and manage.
In light of this recent, unnecessary loss of American national treasures at the hands of Bureau of Labor Management agents, it is undeniably your duty to promptly pursue a thorough investigation into the cause of this tragedy so that similar events can be prevented in the future. I urge you to carry out that duty.
Further, if the investigation concludes that Bureau of Land Management officials had the means to prevent the conditions that led to the killings, or that the horses could have been saved by any reasonable means despite the condition they were found in, I demand swift recourse for responsible officials and the implementation of prevention strategies.
Sincerely, [Your Name Here]

Dear Mark
Hidden away in the remote India–Nepal border area, Suma the sloth bear has lived a life of misery. Our rescue team found her with bleeding claws, broken teeth and a pierced muzzle oozing with pus. A coarse piece of ragged yellow rope had been pushed through the open wound in her nose. It had been used by her captors to force her onto her hind legs and make her ‘perform’ as a dancing bear.
It is unclear what her captors had intended for Suma – more long, painful years as a dancing bear in Nepal perhaps. But certainly if we hadn’t rescued her, Suma would have faced a miserable fate.
Your gift today will help to repair the physical and mental damage Suma has suffered
Once she was safely in our care, the team caring for her could see Suma was truly suffering. Our vet noted:
“This poor bear is in a lot of pain. It seems her captors were trying to remove her claws and perhaps even her paws while she was alive to sell the body parts, possibly for traditional Chinese medicine. The poor animal has suffered severe trauma and will require extensive veterinary care.”
On arrival at Wildlife SOS’ Agra Bear Rescue Centre the stinking rope was gently removed from Suma’s nose. As her mouth was filled with painful sores, at first she could only be fed on a bland liquid diet. However, gradually the keepers have started to introduce solid, nutritious food into her meals and lots of love and kindness into her life.
Her terrible ordeal has left her fearful and suspicious but this has made us more determined than ever to work at developing a bond of trust and affection with her.
I’m determined that, with your help, we can end Suma’s suffering and give her the happy life she deserves after so much suffering
Please try to help – thank you – SAV.
Thank you
Yours sincerely
Alan Knight OBE
Chief Executive
PS So far, in her short life Suma has known only cruelty and neglect. Like all dancing bears, she has been abused and beaten into submission and it’s no wonder that she cowers at any loud noise or even the sound of a raised voice.
Your gift today will help us fill her life with love and kindness and dispel her fear forever. Thank you.

End the Transport of Canadian Animal Hunting ‘Trophies’

Protect wildlife!
British Columbia is one of the last refuges of the grizzly bear, yet the province still allows a Limited Entry Hunt for grizzly bear trophy hunters twice a year.
To make things worse, Air Canada and WestJet continue to allow the transport of Canadian animal ‘trophies’, such as black bears, grizzly bears, polar bears and wolves, despite banning the transport of big game out of Africa.
Join us in urging Air Canada CEO, Calin Rovinescu and WestJet CEO, Gregg Saretsky to take a stand against this brutal and inhumane ‘sport’ in their own backyard by refusing to transport grizzly, black bears, and wolves from their natural habitat.
Please sign and share this message to help #BanTheTrophy hunt, one step at a time.

Dear Mark,
I’m thrilled to tell you that, yesterday, the European Parliament voted to ban farm animal cloning.

What’s next?
To progress into law, the proposals to ban cloning must now be supported by the 28-strong European Council of Ministers, and the European Commission. When they take their turn to decide we’ll need your help again – so watch this space!
In the meantime, our team will be busy behind the scenes – putting in the hours to identify our allies and work out which Member States could derail this vital legislation. Even compared to dressing up as a cow… or a rabbit… or a chicken (I’ve done them all!) this isn’t glamorous work.
Finally, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who took action to help make Europe a No Clone Zone. This vote is your achievement.
With my best wishes,
James West
