Thirty-six years of PETA protests, of documenting animals left to die, beaten animals, and much more, has reduced attendance to the point of no return.

All other animal circuses, roadside zoos, and wild animal exhibitors, including marine amusement parks like SeaWorld and the Miami Seaquarium, must take note: society has changed, eyes have been opened, people know now who these animals are, and we know it is wrong to capture and exploit them.

Thank you to everyone who has picked up a protest sign, passed out leaflets, written letters, shared videos, called legislators, spoken to family, and been part of this relentless pursuit of freedom for animals.
This would not have happened without you.
Watch the videos below to see how Ringling has treated animals – and then be thankful that come May, this abuse will be in the history books !
How pathetic is this for such wonderful animals ?

SAV Comment:
In the year 2004 Mark was running a group called ‘North Kent Animal Welfare (NKAW)’. At this time, NKAW submitted a memorandum to the House of Commons – the UK Government; regarding their views on the use of wild animals in UK circuses. Remember that even at this time (2004), around 85% of the British public were disgusted and opposed to the use of wild animals in circuses.
Here below is a copy of part of the submission to the British government that Mark made (under the name of NKAW) as a contribution to the Draft Animal Welfare Bill (for the United Kingdom) which was being constructed at the time. This is now a formal UK document / law which applies in the UK. Unfortunately, despite the massive call by the British public; and additional representations into formal government draft documentation such as the draft animal welfare Bill, the UK has never passed law to ban the use of wild animals in UK circuses.

So here we are in 2017, some 13 years on, and despite promises by the utterly useless David Cameron; until recently the Prime Minister; we are still not witnessing any action by the British government to ban the use of wild animals in British circuses.
And so now we very much welcome the action taken by ‘James Bond’ – Sir Roger Moore in bringing this issue once again to the table of the current Prime Minister Theresa May. You can read below the actions taken by Sir Roger and also give your support to the campaign by (once again) petitioning the British government on this issue.
As Sir Roger clearly states in his letter:
‘All around the world, animal circuses are being banned. Countries such as Austria, Belgium, Mexico, and the Netherlands have all put an end to such barbarous cruelty to wild animals. Yet ever-so-civilised, animal-loving Britain still allows these archaic exhibitions simply because of a lack of action on the part of Downing Street’.
Please help us to get this ban for once and for all. As you can see, we have been fighting to get a ban for well over 13 years. It is time the government actually took action and implemented a full ban rather than the wishy washy ignorance to the British public’s wants up until now. We expected little from useless David Cameron; but now we have Mrs. May as Prime Minister; we demand action is taken.

Well done Sir Roger for speaking up for animals in British circuses.

ARTICLE:
Sir Roger Moore to PM: It’s Past Time to Ban Animal Circuses
The actor, humanitarian, and animal advocate urged Theresa May to outlaw this archaic form of so-called “entertainment”.
Sir Roger Moore has a message for Theresa May. In a moving article in today’s Sunday People, the actor, humanitarian, and animal advocate urges the Prime Minister to introduce legislation banning wild-animal circuses.
He writes:
All around the world, animal circuses are being banned. Countries such as Austria, Belgium, Mexico, and the Netherlands have all put an end to such barbarous cruelty to wild animals. Yet ever-so-civilised, animal-loving Britain still allows these archaic exhibitions simply because of a lack of action on the part of Downing Street.
I’m well aware that policy change doesn’t come overnight, but popular legislation to prohibit circuses from keeping tigers in see-through boxes called cages and carting them about the land has been dragging on for aeons, because the Prime Minister holds the key and won’t give it up.
Speaking on the issue, Stanley Johnson – our very own foreign secretary’s father – said, “[W]e have had several years now of shilly-shallying. We need to move forward”. And indeed, we do.
Wild animals in real life must feel as if they’ve been captured by the fictional Dr No. When they’re not being forced to perform confusing tricks under threat of the whip, they’re chained up or tied down. They’re denied everything that gives their lives meaning. It’s no wonder that they develop abnormal and disturbing behaviour, such as incessantly biting the bars of their cages, pacing endlessly back and forth, or even self-mutilating. If they become sick or are injured while en route to the next show, a veterinarian with expertise in exotic species may be hours, if not days, away – if anyone is called at all.
Sir Roger states that “[u]ntil a ban is imposed, Britain continues to say ‘Roll up, roll up’ to abuse”. Join him in letting the Prime Minister know that it’s time – past time – to outlaw this archaic form of so-called “entertainment”. Please add your name to our online action:

Tartu bans wild animals in circuses
29. Oct 2016
Reuters
Tartu, the second largest city in Estonia, will no longer allow circuses that exploit wild animals, to perform in the city. The decision was yesterday announced by the mayor of Tartu, Urmas Klaas.
Estonian ministry of rural affairs is currently working on a draft to ban the use of all wild animals in circuses. Provided the draft would be approved by the parliament, it will come into force on June 1, 2018.
In June this year, NGO animal advocacy organization Loomus welcomed the announcement by The Estonian Veterinary Association in support of banning wild animals in circuses.
“As a member of the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe, the Estonian Veterinary Association has voted for banning the use of wild animals in traveling circuses,” confirmed Priit Koppel, the president of the Estonian Veterinary Association.
“Thus, we support the stances of the members of ENDCAP (the European Network to End the Keeping of Wild Animals in Captivity), the European leading network of animal organizations and live nature experts, and those of the members of the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe, which recommend all European countries to ban the use of wild animals in traveling circuses.”
Currently, 23 countries in the world have established a total nation-wide ban on the use of wild animals or all animals in circuses. Nine European Union countries have clearly banned the use of all or wild animals in circuses; nine countries have established partial bans.

All pictures shown do not relate to the incident / demo detailed by Venus.

Three years ago in the city where I live came a circus with wild animals.
Very quickly it became common that tigers, lions and even elephants were the prison inmates and everyone wanted to go.
We also wanted to go.
As protesters.
We had planned a direct demonstration before the circus tent.
Such a thing was risky, those who had demonstrated against this circus in other cities, knew it.
Therefore we had to be many, on this point we were all agreed.
Organizations, names, parties played no role.
No matter where everyone came from, many people would have to be the main thing.
The last level of participants in Facebook one day before was 20!

On the same day we were only four there !!
The policemen who wanted to protect us were more than us!
And that’s why we needed their help very quickly.
It was afternoon show on this day and the visitors wanted to buy a card.
The circus director, a giant of 1.90 and 100 kilograms, found that we had no right to break his legal business and asked the police to remove us.
The police said we had permission, the demo was approved, so they could not do anything to us.
Then the circus director wanted to beat an activist, but the police arrived in time to help.

On the same evening when I posted two photos from this -for me- miserable demo in Facebook, I thought about it for a long time.
I was angry because I was firmly convinced that we would had have more success if we were 20.
I was disappointed because I had expected responsibility and solidarity.
I was disappointed by my comrades.

Today, after three years I evaluate the animal protection to not so one-sided.
Meanwhile, in many countries wild animals are forbidden in the circus, and this is the merit not only of the persons who risk their lives before a circus tent.
But they are part of it.
The success was achieved by the petitions by the millions of petitions, the collective and private letters to ministers, the big demos by the cities, the media reports of all kinds.
The rights of the animals must be achieved by any means necessary.

With best Regards for you dear Mark and all
Venus

Bear cubs were chained to a brick wall and forced to stand upright, putting them at risk of choking or hanging.
Bears Crying Out for Help
Dear Mr Johnson,
For a bear PETA Asia’s investigator named Doudou, “training” meant being yanked by her neck and forced to walk on parallel bars, sometimes on just her front paws. If she stopped or made even the smallest mistake, she was struck with a stick. When she wasn’t being forced to perform, she could often be found pawing and biting at the bars of the cramped, barren cage she was confined to, crying out desperately for someone – anyone – to stop her abuse.
Her cries – like those of the many bears, tigers, monkeys, and other animals PETA Asia’s eyewitness found in 10 different circuses and animal training facilities across China – were simply ignored by trainers, who saw Doudou and other animals like her as little more than another circus “attraction” to be coerced into performing ridiculous and often painful tricks through fear, intimidation, and violence.
The abuse PETA Asia has exposed at Chinese circus training facilities is heartbreaking. In addition to Doudou, the eyewitness documented that bear cubs were tightly strung up by their necks and forced to stand on their hind legs – sometimes for hours on end – at the risk of choking or hanging themselves. Young lion cubs were found quivering in fear, and tigers were seen being violently whipped and beaten with heavy metal poles to force them to jump through hoops and balance on balls. The eyewitness found terrified monkeys grimacing, struggling against neck chains, defecating in fear, and attempting to escape from their handlers.
In every circus inspected by PETA Asia, animals lacked adequate food, drinking water, housing, and veterinary care.
The abuse documented in this groundbreaking investigation isn’t just the result of notoriously weak Chinese animal-protection laws. In circuses everywhere, animals are routinely kept in chains and confined to cramped cages. The use of fear and punishment to force animals to perform – much like what was discovered in China – is common practice among circuses that exploit animals around the world.
But with your help, we can change that.
This latest exposé has done more than reveal the heavy chains, frequent beatings, and constant fear of abuse that circuses use to control the animals they hold captive: it’s also inspired tens of thousands of people around the world to pledge never, ever to buy a ticket to any circus that uses animals.
PETA Asia’s circus investigation is even beginning to have an impact in China, where the group has now become the top international charity on Sina Weibo, the biggest social-networking site in that country. Footage from the investigation has been seen by millions, and just last week, the largest English-language newspaper in Eastern China – Shanghai Daily – ran a story on the tremendous social media response to this case.
Across China and around the world, calls to shut down circuses that abuse and exploit animals are growing louder. Governments in France, the UK, and elsewhere are seeing new pressure to follow the lead of Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, and other countries by banning wild-animal acts, and more and more families are refusing to buy tickets to any circus with animals.
Your generous gift today will immediately strengthen PETA’s vital work for all animals, including those who are being abused for human entertainment right now.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Ingrid E Newkirk

30/7/16 – New news.
Today has been a very busy day with regard the Polar bear which is suffering at Belgrade Zoo. See our post and the video of the suffering bear at:
Well now we have some great news which we can share with you.
We are now starting to work with a UK organisation which campaigns globally for bears – ‘People Advocating for Caged Bears’ – and here is the link to their website:
As you can see at http://www.freecagedbears.com/#!caged-bears/c1rb8 the group is working on behalf of bears all over the world. They have kindly offered their services to establish a section on bears in Serbia; of which our polar bear at Belgrade was the starting point, and we as an organisation will be working with campaigners in the group to expose further the suffering of animals, especially bears, at Serbian zoos.
Between us we can put extra pressure on the Serbian government and Ministry responsible; and we can expose to the whole world when action is not being taken; such as with the Belgrade polar bear
Have we not exposed the situation of the government Ministry not doing its job properly in the past ? – see her just a few of our posts.:
We hope you will find this project a new and exciting one for the zoo animals in Serbia – especially caged bears.
The Serbian government cannot keep hiding behind the bars of the cage all the time. We will expose them and show them up for the actions that they are not taking for the welfare of their animals.
In addition, we as a combined campaigns group can forward all our information to the EU Enlargement Commission, and remind them that states wishing to join the EU, such as Serbia; do have responsibilities to ensure that they comply with the rules of law – that is Serbian law which is not being enforced for the animals at this present time.
