Jonza

The end of last week saw several of us called into action to try and help a goat in Serbia.

His name is ‘Jonza / Jonzy’ and from the photos of him above and below, we are sure you will agree with us that he is a very handsome young lad !

He lives with Vesna and Slavica, and they contacted to ask if we can get some Vermiculite Homeopathic medicine for Jozna, as he has severe arthritis in his legs.  Vesna asked for this medicine specially as in the past and for many years, she worked in a homeopathic ambulance.  So Vesna knew exactly what would be good for Jozna and his leg problems, which we are informed are currently causing him lots of pain.

Vermiculite is not available as a homeopathic medicine in Serbia.

Jonza was rescued by Vesna and Slavica in 2007, and has been under their care ever since.

And so Friday morning (22/3) we jumped into action to try and help Jonza as quickly as we could.

First of all contact (myself) was made with Ainsworth homeopathic specialist in Marleybone, London.  I thought that when I explained to the man on the phone that I needed medicine to help a goat in Serbia with leg problems, the man would think I was some kind of nut and put the phone down.  Instead, he was very helpful and listened to what I asked. He then said ‘yes, ok’ and asked me if I required tablets or liquid for Jonza.

In the end, with the help of Jean and Linda here in the UK, and also by going back to Vesna and Slavica to get exact requirements, an order was made on 22/3.  Today, 25/3, Linda has informed me that she now has the medicine (sent in the post by Ainsworth’s) and that tonight it will be packaged up ready for shipment to Serbia tomorrow (26th).  Packages normally take about one week to arrive, so we are very hopeful that by the middle of next week, Jonza will have started his new medication, and more importantly, we see an improvement in his leg condition.

We will try and give more updates on Jonza as time moves on, but for now enjoy the pictures that we have from Vesna showing Jonza.

Get well very soon Jonza !! – from all the crew.

Regards –  Mark – SAV London.

Serbia: News From Felix Shelter – March 2013. Situation Is Desperate – Celebrity Help Needed To Support Costs.

SAV Comment

We have helped Danica and Felix to get some additional funding support for emergency work to be undertaken on the shelter.  This is obviously far from enough.

There must be some people somewhere in our supporter global network who know others who can help out here with a bigger set of donations; be they celebrities, tv and media persons (Oprah ?), sports personalities or even very rich ‘animal welfare’ organisations.

As you can see from the photos above and below, the situation has reached crisis pointOne cheque from just one celebrity would probably cover all the costs needed to get Felix shelter sorted and running properly again.

Is anyone reading this prepared to make contact with celebrities and others to try and get Felix shelter some help ?

Or are we going to see the place fall down, despite all our efforts, and all the cats made homeless once again ?

Over to you – please do what you can to try and support this very worthwhile cause.

Thank You.

Serious problems with a damaged shelter

We’ve been repairing the shelter since last spring, but in spite of our best efforts the repairs are far from being finished. Instead of replacing the entire roof of the main building (which would have been a very costly, but only permanent solution), we managed to install additional supports and strengthen the roof as much as we could. Had this winter been as snowy as the last one, the roof would’ve surely collapsed under the snow load. It must be replaced this year at any cost, as it can’t possibly endure another winter. Moreover, we didn’t even touch the roof of the auxiliary rooms in the backyard. The entire structure is worn out and some of the roof rafters and beams are cracked and half-rotten. The old roof tiles, partially covered in moss, are moving and sagging and with the melting snow and heavy rains, water has started making it’s way in. What would have happened had the precipitation been more abundant, I dare not imagine.

As to the auxiliary rooms themselves, they have originally been made of bricks and rammed earth. If we want to fix them permanently, special nets should be adhered to the inner walls and Bavalit applied afterwards. Bavalit is a kind of mortar, a mixture of hydraulic binders, mineral aggregates and additives. Then the new insulation layer can be added to the ceiling and we would have a nice and safe indoor enclosure. The only cat room in the front yard is in the worst shape, with a huge bump in the ceiling caused by moisture, and a number of cracks in the walls. If enough of the ceiling gets wet, it will become too heavy to support itself and will collapse on my unsuspecting cats! We have to fix it ASAP!

The outdoor enclosure is another matter. The perimeter of the whole yard and the roof should be enclosed with some fencing with a stronger, but finer mesh. The existing fence is too weak and is actually chain-link fencing with links that are too large to prevent little kittens and skinnier adults from escaping through the wire. Although there wasn’t as much snow this winter, the wire mesh dangerously sagged at one point, as it was already droopy after it barely help up through the last year’s winter. Another heavy snow load would have knocked it down. We’ve been lucky so far, but who can guarantee we will be equally lucky next winter? I won’t even mention that paved paths through the yard should also be made…

Another big problem is the outdoor fence. The posts had already started to deteriorate and crumble. They became wobbly last year, and this year’s snow and ice further degraded them and caused extensive additional damage. Not only that, the gates can’t close properly. These rotten posts will fall apart and cause the whole fence to fall down any day now. It’s not an exaggeration, it’s an inevitable reality and a dire emergency!

Please, help us! We’re overwhelmed and doing everything we can, but we just can’t do it without your help! The need is great, but no amount is too small. Thank you in advance for anything you may be able to provide!

Serbia: Sample Letters To Send – Animal Killers Go Unpunished – Not An Example For An EU Candidate Nation !

Serbian Flag

Serb sample 1

Serb sample 3

Hi,

Scroll down please – there is an English version of the letter following the Serbian one.

And it is very important to know- everybody must know these :

Article 269. of Criminal code of Serbia ,Official gasette  number  121/2012 : has 3 paragraphs:

1) paragraph: to human/humans  who cruel or kill 1 animal  in opposite to rule of law:  up to 1 year prison or money punishment;

2) paragraph: to human who  cruel more then 1 animal, or even  only 1 but if that one is of high protection/protected species:  this paragraph 2) of  Article 269. demands: up to 3 years prison or money-punishment;

3) paragraph of Article 269.  who organises or watchches or act  animal fighting between animals of one or of different species:   would be punish by up to 3 years prison.

( You can find  this law by Google.com if  You write this:

Krivicni zakonik Srbije ,  find number 121/2012, there  You  could find Article  269. ( Clan 269.  with  paragraphs 1), 2), 3)

it is  the latest version of this Law , valid  from 24.12.2012.

p.s.

I fight very hard ,and almost 24h per day, every day, on behalf of EPAR-OIPA , short, name of my organisation is EPAR,  and it  fights against shinters, hunters, veterinary inspections, hunter inspections, public attorneys, and all those of authorities of State Serbia  and  cities of Serbia  who dont implement laws, as at my city Subotica, as all over Serbia too.

Serbia has good laws , and many good people  who deep suffer  because these criminals – but inspections and  authorities don`t implement laws, because high level of corruption.

Also, there are many organisations and  single  people who fight – but  Corruption is very hard Enemy .

SERBIAN Letter

Pisem vam da izrazim svoju zabrinutost zbog porasta slucajeva zlostavljanja i ubijanja zivotinja u Srbiji.

U mnogim gradovima sirom Srbije, skoro svakodnevno, pojedinci namerno truju pse i macke bez vlasnika.

http://www.blic.rs/Vesti/Beograd/344942/Beogradjanka-spasla-mace-kojem-su-odsekli-zadnje-sape

http://www.telegraf.rs/vesti/557388-bezdusno-ubijena-dva-psa-u-barajevu-osam-stenaca-ostalo-na-ulici

http://www.alo.rs/vesti/hronika/stenci-cvileli-dok-ih-je-ubijao-lopatom/5006

http://www.pressonline.rs/info/hronika/263974/kaznili-ga-sa-60000-dinara-zbog-ubistva-psa.html

S postovanjem

ENGLISH VERSION:

I am writing to express my deep concern about increasing animal cruelty in Serbia.
In many Serbian cities, almost daily, some people are deliberately poisoning dogs and cats without owners. During the last month, several dozen owners also reported that their pets were poisoned.
http://www.novosti.rs/vesti/beograd.74.html:420259-U-Sumicama-ponovo-otrovani-psi

The news about the brutally murdered dog in Belgrade, whose skin was removed from the body, horrified animal lovers across the globe.
http://www.nadlanu.com/pocetna/info/vesti/SVIREPO-Odrao-kozu-psu-i-bacio-ga-pored-kontejnera-u-Borci-UZNEMIRUJUCE-FOTOGRAFIJE.a-168603.295.html

In Novi Sad recently was discovered the charred body of a cat.  Also in this town someone is heartlessly killing pigeons.
http://www.blic.rs/Vesti/Hronika/362122/Monstruozno-Novosadjani-nasli-pecenu-macku-UPOZORENJE-UZNEMIRUJUCI-PRIZOR

Another victim was a two month old kitten from Belgrade, to whom some monster cut off the back paws.
http://www.blic.rs/Vesti/Beograd/344942/Beogradjanka-spasla-mace-kojem-su-odsekli-zadnje-sape

The last atrocity against animals happened 22 February 2013. Two dogs were brutally murdered in the Belgrade municipality of Barajevo. Eight puppies left on the street without mothers.
http://www.telegraf.rs/vesti/557388-bezdusno-ubijena-dva-psa-u-barajevu-osam-stenaca-ostalo-na-ulici

One of the most severe cases of animal cruelty took place in November 2012 at the market in Zemun, where Vujica K. with a shovel killed four puppies. No one dared to approach him. Police detained Vujica K. but after a hearing, he was released to defend himself from freedom.
http://www.alo.rs/vesti/hronika/stenci-cvileli-dok-ih-je-ubijao-lopatom/5006

Sad examples above show that there is increasing violence across Serbia. Unfortunately, there are no real consequences for people who committed these monstrous crimes!

26th February 2013 – the Court in the Serbian town of Cacak sentenced Borivoja Obradovic for killing two dogs with an axe (one of them was pregnant) to the fine of 60,000 dinars. Fines that Obradovic must pay to the court are of 61.390. For this crime, by the Serbian Law, possible imprisonment is up to one year!

http://www.pressonline.rs/info/hronika/263974/kaznili-ga-sa-60000-dinara-zbog-ubistva-psa.html

To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished, or not be sufficiently punished, would permit them to go on to commit serious and violent crimes against humans.

SPECIFICALLY BY ARTICLE 269 OF THE SERBIAN CRIMINAL LAW, ABUSE AND KILLING OF ANIMALS IS A CRIME!

Serbians authorities must act by the Law and send a clear message that such brutal crimes will not be tolerated, and there are serious consequences for people who commit them.

The EU recognizes animals as sentient beings and treats them with respect. There are ethical and cultural reasons, without for one moment forgetting the economic and public health reasons, for maintaining a very high standard of animal welfare!

IF SERBIA WANTS TO GET THE CANDIDATE STATUS RECOMMENDATION FOR THE EU, MUST STOP THE ACCEPTANCE OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS AND ENFORCE A POLICY OF HARSH PUNISHMENT FOR THESE CRIMES.

Please protect the citizens and animals of Serbia by giving these animal killers serious jail time.

Thank you for your valuable time and consideration

Respectfully

APPEAL FOR HELP

“Problems are piling up…

Winter is already in full swing, but the weather is very changeable; we were literally snowed in a couple of weeks ago, and then it was pouring rain for days. After that we had some chilly but clear weather followed by freezing rain and now it’s snowing again. The central heating is on day and night and the first tank of gas we bought back in September is close to empty; another one has already been ordered.

During the cold winter months what scares me the most is the thought of a heavy, wet snow falling and sticking to the already rain drenched chain link fence. It will eventually reach a point where it can’t bear the burden of the extra weight and will collapse. We’ve been lucky so far, as last weekend’s snowfall melted quickly, but we can’t count on luck forever and I wonder what will happen when it turns against us. The chain link fencing around the shelter has gotten loose and the posts are wobbly due to the horrible winter and huge snowfall last year. The entire fence is much weaker, more than ever before. How this winter’s ordeal will end up remains to be seen.

The roof of the auxiliary rooms in the backyard is another matter. Completely worn out, with rotten rafters and partially cracked roof beams, it’s still miraculously holding on, but the new snow always gives me the willies every single time, nevertheless. Our last year’s project of repairing the shelter started too late and we weren’t prepared well enough. We were trying to raise funds while simultaneously repairing the shelter and it was a big mistake, we should’ve found a way of covering expenses before getting bogged down with major shelter repairs. Most of the unpleasant lessons seem to have to be learnt the hard way…The first time is always the hardest, no matter what we are talking about.

All of the kitties are eating tremendous amounts of food during the winter months; I can’t believe how fast the food storage empties. They have all gained a lot of weight but their appetites are still voracious. When the weather is bad, most of them don’t even want to set foot outside, but on rare perfectly calm and sunny days the yard is full of chubby, furry creatures rolling around. Just looking at them is a pure bliss!

We are in the middle of winter now, and no one knows how bad it’s going to get. If you can help us in any way possible, please do so! Your kindness and thoughtfulness will make everything a lot better and will be a great encouragement. Felix kitties, all of them unwanted and unimportant once, deserve to have nice lives in their safe haven!”

Best regards and thanks;

Danica and all the cats.

(The article taken from local newspapers)

The criminal charge has submitted against a Veterinarian Milan Bozic and Chief of animal zoo hygiene department Svetlana Pavlovic, for illegal euthanasia of homeless animals.
At least 60 stray (abandoned) dogs poisoned in illegal in Public Utility Company “Our home” in Pozega, or died of starvation and exhaustion in April last year. It is suspected that in previous years the number of killed animals so exceeded one thousand.

Criminal charge against those responsible for killing and torturing animals, has submitted citizens’ association “Alpha” from Belgrade, based on the testimony of worker of “Our home” by Rade Susic, who had direct access to illegal acts that have taken place within the shelter. After a series of collected evidences, the case was finally found in prosecutors.

The dogs fed the carcasses
Two days before the mass killing of dogs in the house was situated about 70, to 28th April 2011 barely a dozen (ten) other animals. Veterinarian Milan Bozic and Chief of animal zoo hygiene department Svetlana Pavlovic in agreement killed 40 dogs, so that they inject a toxic substance T61, without the prior mandatory bedtime. To the dogs, too, was not provided veterinary care, nor were fed for several days, which resulted in the deaths of twenty animals that were in the house until June 1 – according to a criminal complaint in which he had access Informer.

An employee Rade Susic, informed the authorities that the majority of dogs euthanized in animal zoo hygiene, although not shown any signs of aggression or illness. He was also informed that dogs are not fed, nor are they provided adequate veterinary care, which is why they died of hunger and exhaustion, and was to have been eating the corpses of dead animals.

Carcasses buried on the banks of the river Đetinja
Instead of burning, the carcasses were buried in the city landfill, near the river Đetinja.

Cemetery by the river
Susic has testified that similar things in Public Utility Company “Our home,” have happened before, and that was from March 2008 to June 2009, in addition to official figures from 1376 dogs killed “off the record” has been killed 950 dogs. To make things even more morbid, dead animal carcasses are burned in areas specifically designated for that purpose. The process was simple.
