England Uk: Urgent Donations Required to Save Rescue Shelter Greyhounds – Please Help

A message sent from Gill to our animal buddies at South West Animal Protection (SWAP) and Greyhound Crusaders – England, Uk.

http://greytexploitations.com/how-you-can-help/greyhound-crusaders

Helen,

Thank you so much for all your help, it is much appreciated.

We have been rescuing greyhounds and lurchers for 12 years now. For the last few years we have only taken in cases of serious abuse, physical and mental.

The dogs that we shelter in the UK aren’t suitable for rehoming for a number of reasons, some because their behaviour is unpredictable, some because of lasting injuries, and some because of phobias they have developed or long stay dogs that were never going to find a forever home. Hounds that have been so abused that when they see a person will take fright or greyhounds that have sustained horrific injuries that will need specialist care and medication throughout their lives

We have a high proportion of older greyhounds who stabilise the group, several are approaching their twilight years and incontinent. We have taken in dogs from Ireland, the UK and Italy (thanks to Anne Finch), our Rome boy Uraguay died at the ripe old age of 14 last October.

We desperately need help now to save our greyhounds and lurchers. We currently have 40 dogs at our shelter who are in danger of being put to sleep in four weeks time. We have personally funded all their treatment and given them a roof over their heads for the last 10 years, unfortunately due to the current economic climate, we have been unable to pay the mortgage on the property where we keep them.

Apart from the donations we receive from local shops in the form of food, we receive no other funding for keep or medical bills. Unless we are able to find £12,000 in the next 28 days they will nearly all have to be put to sleep as they aren’t rehomable, having come from other rescues, we are their last chance saloon. I feel as though we have failed them miserably, we have spoken to the mortgage company and explained the situation but they are less than sympathetic. If anybody can help us save these animals lives we would be eternally grateful.

Apart from being the charity that our local pet superstore supports and other kind donations we receive, we have always funded the looking after of the hounds from our own pockets. Unfortunately over the last three years we have had to act as full time carers to both my father who died of lung cancer in 2007, and my mother-in-law who died of heart failure in December last year. This meant we were unable to work the hours needed to pay the bills.

Our mortgage company who appeared to be sympathetic to our situation, had said they would give us time to pay the arrears. We then received a letter stating they were applying for the warrant to evict us in 28 days. Our main concern is the dogs welfare and trying to keep a roof over their heads.

Serbia: Subotica City Pound Closed to Animal Welfare NGO’s. Dogs To Be Killed Regularly With Serbian Government Approval. Write To the EU MEPs and Ask for Serbia To be Investigated Before Being Allowed EU Membership.

Please remember this as you read the post below –

*** MEP’s require your votes at the European Parliament elections to be held in June 2009 ****.

No action on Serbian Animal Welfare by the EU – NO June Votes for MEPs by EU  Citizens !

——————————————————————-

Subotica City, Serbia – 6th January 2009.

There are around 250 dogs and many cats also in the city pound at Subotica.

There is a ban by the authorities allowing NGO’s such as EPAR to enter the pound.

Gates have been padlocked to prevent NGO access, as can be seen in the photograph.

subotica7

Padlocked gates at Subotica City Pound – NO NGO’s  ALLOWED !!

The public firm for garbage collection in Subotica, JKP “Cistoca i zelenilo”, has now informed Suboticas citizens about their plans for mass animal killings.

Around one week before new year, Subotica citizens were informed by local radio that JKP “Cistoca i zelenilo” has now purchased more vehicles and will be more effective at catching stray dogs and cats.  They will kill the animals 7 days after they have been caught and held at the pound.

JKP “Cistoca i zelenilo” has a Director named Vlada Dragin;

he is the BROTHER of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Sasha Dragin.

Keep animal issues in the family !

subotica4

As of today, 6th January 2009, no killings have been undertaken at the city pound, but the authorities and those who run the public services are all encouraged because the government has not undertaken national legislation implementation and they appear to be ensuring that no one has been prosecuted or sent to jail, as they should legally be, for inflicting suffering on animals (Article 269).

It is the same old story in Serbia, that the authorities and government only apply the law when it suits them to apply it.  As a nation (Serbia) seeking EU accession, this type of attitude is NOT acceptable for EU membership.

We understand at this moment that throughout Serbia, authorities are encouraged about the ability to undertake mass killings, because the government is not strong enough to enforce existing legislation and prosecute.  Crimes against animals can be punished under existing Serbian law by up to 3 years jail.

Again, From This ………..

………………  To This

We say again, if the Serbian government cannot be seen to be enforcing its own existing national legiislation, then it is NOT worthy of being given membership of the EU.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2008/12/18/serbia-to-apply-for-eu-candidate-status-in-2009/

This is terrible news for the animals but very typical of a government which does what it likes and which does not care about its own national legislation enforcement.

The local and republic authorities are primarily members of the Democracy Party as is the current Serbian President, Mr. Boris Tadic.

On October 21st, the European union Intergroup wrote a letter to President Tadic about the issue of stray animals in serbia.  A copy of this letter can be seen at

https://serbiananimalsvoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/letter-to-the-serbian-president-on-stray-animals-1.doc

To show complete and utter contempt to the EU, the Union which Mr. Tadic wishes to join as the Serbian President, we understand that as of 7th January 2009, President Tadic has NOT even bothered to respond to the EU Intergroup regarding their letter !

The killings across Serbia are in opposition to current Serbian legislation, and so again and right now, we ask all supporters please to access the following links (see below) and demand from their Members of the European Parliament (MEP) a full investigation by the EU into why a state such as Serbia, seeking EU accession, should be allowed to ignore its own national legislation for animal welfare.

This implementation of national legal enforcement is a fundamental requirement of a state seeking EU accession; and once again, Serbia has failed.  President Tadic has ignored the requests of the EU Intergroup to respond about things he has been asked.

The EU must be made aware of this NOW.

MEP’s require your votes at the European Parliament elections to be held in June this year.

If they are to get your vote, then they have to do something in return; and that is to ask for a full investigation into the non-enfocement of existing Serbian animal welfare legislation before Serbia is even considered for EU accession.

EU citizens can contact their own national MEPs using the following links – nations are detailed over all links and so please check through until you find your own country.

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2008/12/29/european-eu-citizens-please-act-now-and-contact-your-meps-regarding-serbian-strays-and-roaming-animals-meps-need-your-votes-in-june-2009/

Please remind your MEPs that what they do or do not do with regard Serbian stray animal issues within the EU Parliament, and with regard to stopping Serbian EU accession, will have a very major influence on the way that you cast your vote at the June 2009 European Elections.

In summary, if MEPs do not act with regard Serbia and animal welfare legislation within Serbia; demanding full written legislation from the Serbian government, then MEPs will NOT get the votes they require for re-election at the June 09 Euro elections.

Serbian government, authorities and press/media can also be informed of your request to your MEPs – that they act for Serbian animals or they do not get your vote in June.

NON EU citizens can still contact Euro MEPs

and ask for the Serbian EU accession and lack of Serbian government stray animal policy / legislation enforcement to be a priority for discussion within the European parliament BEFORE Serbia is ever allowed to gain membership of the (European) Union.

Please use the links given directly above to contact MEPs asking for them to address the Serbian stray animal issue.

Contacts details for Serbia are given below.

Portugal: Protest Against New Animal Facility for Research Breeding

From: AR-News@googlegroup s.com

On Behalf Of Hugo Evangelista

Sent: Sunday, January 04, 2009 8:39 PM

Subject: [AR-News] [Portugal] Protest against new animal facility for research purposes

Fellow activists,

As you may know, a new animal facility is being built in Portugal (Azambuja) to breed animals for research purposes.

It will have between 20.000 to 25.000 cages of which animals will be raised and sold to universities, investigation institutes and pharmaceutical companies.

It will cost 36 million euros, where 27 millions euros are coming from the taxpayers.

This money should not be invested to delay the progress of science but should instead be invested in investigation and implementation of alternative methods, that are more accurate, inexpensive and ethic.

Please show your indignation to Champalimaud Foundation against the construction of this animal breeding centre sending the message below by e-mail to info@fundacaochampa limaud.pt and a copy to geral@accaoanimal. com.

If possible, also send the same message by letter to: Fundação Champalimaud, Praça Duque de Saldanha n° 1-9 D, 1050-094 Lisboa, Portugal.

You can also show your discontentment by phone (00 351 213 568 160) or

fax (00 351 213 568 169).

Dear President of Champalimaud Foundation

Dr Leonor Beleza

I have recently heard through the media that the Champalimaud Foundation along with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Lisbon University are planning to build one of the biggest animal facilities in Europe to breed animals for research purposes. This news shocked me and made me angry, since I have always believed that the Champalimaud Foundation was all about promoting scientific development and not of making profit out of unnecessary animal suffering.

Considering that:

– According to American Food and Drug Administration (2004) 92 out of every 100 drugs that successfully pass animal trials and go into human clinical testing fail during the human clinical trial phase;

– Drugs that were considered safe after animal testing proved to be harmful and even deadly once used in humans (e.g. Vioxx, a popular prescription for arthritis disease in 2004 caused 27,785 heart attacks and strokes, 6,946 of which were fatal);

– Well-known scientists like Dr Richard Klausner, former Director of National Cancer Institute, admit the lack of reliability of animal testing. Quoting Dr Klausner in a Time magazine interview in May, 1988 “The history of cancer research has been a history of curing cancer in the mouse… We have cured mice of cancer for decades – and it simply didn?t work in humans“;

– The European Union recently proposed reviews on the directive 86/609/EEC because according to the “Eurogroup for animals”, since 1986 alternatives to animal use in biomedical research were found, leading to more restrictive laws regarding animal use in several countries as well as an increase of the criticism amongst European citizens regarding animal experimentation;

– Even though there is still no deadline for the end of all animal experimentation in Europe, the European Union is moving in that direction. The European Environment Commissioner Stravros Dimas, said to the press very recently (5/11/2008) “It is absolutely important to steer away from testing on animals. Scientific research must focus on finding alternative methods to animal testing”;

– Animal experimentation is, from my point of view, ethically unacceptable and a humane NGO should unit efforts to abolish it instead of promote it.

Considering all the above, I would like to express my deep disapproval for this initiative of The Champalimaud Foundation and kindly ask you:

1) to reconsider the animal facilities construction;

2) to use alternatives rather than animals in the new research centre.

Yours Sincerely,
