Cat burnt to death in sick act of cruelty

March 15, 2010 10:23AM

ANIMAL welfare officers say they are appalled at the horrific death of a cat drenched with fuel and set alight in Perth.

The RSPCA has appealed for public information to track down the culprits.

A ranger found the body of the badly burnt cat near Carmen Reserve in Bassendean on Friday night after receiving a report from a member of the public.

RSPCA spokesman Richard Barry said  the cat, believed to be about two years old, was doused with an accelerant and set alight, possibly  while the perpetrator stood on its tail to prevent it running away.

He said described the attack as ‘horrible act of abject cruelty’.

“The RSPCA’s veterinary surgeon has examined the corpse and believes an accelerant was used, probably poured over the cat’s back judging by the pattern of burns,” he said.

“The sex of the cat is indeterminable due to the severity of the burns.

“A section of the cat’s tail was found close to the corpse.

“The ranger believes the perpetrator may have been standing on the tail as the cat was doused in accelerant. Once the flames had burned through the tail, it would have fallen away from the body.”

Mr Barry said the cat did not have a collar and any microchip would have been destroyed by the fire.

He  appealed for anyone with information to call the RSPCA.

He said such an act could lead to a five-year jail term and a fine of between $2000 and $50,000.
