Over 1500 Cats Trapped in Shanghai and Surrounding Region for Shipment to Southern China’s Food and Fur Industries

Jia Xing (Zhejiang Province, China)
30 August 2008

Shanghai Daily’s coverage of the story here.

On Friday, 29 August 2008, local animal rescuers located several trucks with over seventy bamboo crates crammed with nearly 1500 cats in Jia Xing, a small city in Zhejiang Province, about an hour outside of Shanghai. These cats had likely been trapped in parks, from housing compounds and the street of Shanghai and neighbouring areas. Many of the cats in the crates had collars on them – obviously people’s pets, possibly trapped just meters from their home. Their destination was (and still is) Guangdong Province in southern China, to be used for food and fur.

The trucks were intercepted late at night in a parking lot in an industrial section of town and as the cat trappers attempted to load the trucks, rescuers called the police. Some rescuers claimed to have lost their cat, while others challenged the rather unofficial-looking photocopied documents that the head of the cat smugglers produced to support his claim that he owned the cats legitimately, having paid RMB50,000 for Photocopied “ownership” papers them (USD$7,320 / GBP£4,067), and that he was transporting them all according to permit.

Regardless of the legality of transport permits, the condition in which the cats were packed – crammed 20 or more to a small crate with no room to move and no access to food or water, while some newborns were being crushed to death and other cats had died, was a shockingly cruel sight.

Over 15 hours of negotiations ensued, in which the local rescuers refused to pay the smugglers for the cats (an agonizingly tough approach, but buying them would fuel more trapping for the “rescue market”). By mid-day Saturday, a crowd of nearly 300 people had gathered. A local TV crew filmed animal lovers feeding the cats through the slats of the crates and watering them down to keep them cool. With an obvious stalemate, increasingly terrified cries coming from the crates and the deteriorating condition of the 1500 cats, several of the crates were broken and cats freed– albeit near a dangerous intersection without anybody to provide follow-up care. At this point, the area was cordoned off and further access to the cats blocked.

By late afternoon, the crowd was dispersed and, sadly, the remaining crates of cats appeared to be loaded onto a new truck by the cat trappers.

Although there is often little hope of helping cats already trapped and on their way to Guangdong, a focus of efforts on spay / neuter and indoor cat campaigns will hopefully someday reduce the numbers of available strays and unwittingly friendly pets going to market.

Cat rescue puts felines on the lam

By Fei Lai
Shanghai Daily
2008-9-3

A GROUP of animal lovers became embroiled in a bizarre confrontation as its members rescued more than 800 cats destined for the dinner table over the weekend.

Six volunteers from the Shanghai Animal Protection Association confronted cat dealers in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, and spent a day and a night trying to rescue about 1,500 cats.

The animals were being loaded onto a container truck that was due to travel to Guangdong Province.

Liu Xiaoyun, one of the volunteers, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that the cats were caged in about 70 bamboo boxes, about 20 to a box.

The volunteers managed to unlock about 40 cages, releasing about 800 of the animals.

“But we don’t know where the remaining cages are,” Liu said. “Most probably, they are on their way to Guangdong.”

Liu said the group received a tip last Friday that the cats were at a fruit wholesale market in Jiaxing. When they arrived at the market, cat traders were loading cages onto the truck.

“Shill cries of cats echoed continuously,” Liu said. “We asked the mongers not to send the cats, but they wouldn’t listen. So I called the police.”

The dealers told police that all the cats were bought from a pet market and they would be raised in Guangdong.

However, Liu said the method of caging so many animals in a confined space was obviously cruel.

“The cats’ sad and shrill screams made us heartbroken,” Liu said. “In spite of the cat dealers’ protests, we managed to release quite a few cats.

“The cats would have had no food or drink for several days. We immediately conducted emergency aid by giving water to them.”

Liu said about 10 female cats had given birth. Some kittens died immediately after birth.

She said the cats remained helpless under a burning sun. “When we released them, the cats jumped out in all directions at once. They’ve suffered so much,” Liu said.

The dealers showed police animal quarantine certificates and insisted on moving the remainder of the cats. With no animal protection laws to refer to, police were powerless to stop the remaining cats from being driven away.

Shanghai Animal Protection Association President Zhang Yi appealed to society to cultivate better dining habits and to treat all animals more humanely.

Action for the Seal Pups Required

Dear friends of baby seals,

I apologize for not sending a proper alert about this important issue, but we are running out of time. Please read the two emails from Ericka of CATCA (starting from the first one).   It is really important that we join forces to help end the horrific Canadian slaughter of baby seals. By helping empower small, hard-working groups throughout Canada, we will have a chance against the multi-billion dollar killing enterprises.  I know Ericka of CATCA and her work. Hers is a hard-working group, committed to help end the baby seals atrocity in Canada.  No donation is too small, please help with whatever you can.

Thank you kindly,  Rosa Close

Thank you so much Rosa!
It is very nice to hear from you again!

It is too political….. The European Commission supports the ban as of a couple of months ago, BUT now as a result, the European
Parliament has sent to all Ministries of Environment at the European Union, a Proposal of a Resolution asking for their opinions about
the issues concerning the seal ban and those opinions will affect not only the Canadian seals, but also the ones from Namibia, Norway, Russia and Greenland too. Once this Resolution is decided and approved, their fate will be in those pages.

My main concern is the “animal welfare” issue…. If the decission makers go for it, they would literally condemn all seals! A country like ours can compromise to “kill the seals in a HUMANE” way without doing it at all, specially when these decission makers don’t know that for 60 years there have been complains, reports of infractions and extremely cruelty on the side of the sealers toward the seals, plus the geographic aspects of the hunt, plus the terrible weather conditions the sealers are exposed to, just makes it impossible to control and ensure by veterinarians or other official observers to check that no violatons are inflicted.

There are so many aspects of the seal hunt in Canada that can’t make it “humane” (when in reality it is barbaric, but this is what these
decission makers understand), so in good faith they could go for that, and then their pelts and other seal products could end up in an open trade widely at the EU ad the seal hunt will ever end!!!

Another reason is that Canada is lobbying right now in Europe trying to convince these decission makers that the aboriginal hunt is the
same as the commercial hunt, which is a BIG LIE, but that could mess up things for the seals big time when these Canadians meet politicians who don’t know a thing about the seal hunt and swallow their lies!

That is my main reason to go to Europe! Whatever comes out on that Resolution at the end of this year, that will be the fate of the seals in 5 countries.

Thank you so much for your support on this big issue!

God bless you!

Ericka

Subject: EXTREMELY URGENT: CATCA needs your help! Pls. pass to others!

Dear all,

I am sorry to bother you, but we need your help: as you may know CATCA and myself have been lobbying in person with European decission makers and politicians
for three years for the Canadian seals.

New week I am suppose to embark on my Third Tour in Europe for the seal ban.

I have everything arranged with heads of the Ministries of Environment/Agriculture and some Secretaries of State in Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, Poland and Rumania
(This last country I will have to skip it for lack of funds!).

I am suppose to start with these meetings next week and yesterday I was invited to participate at the biggest congress for conservation: the IUCN in Barcelona,
but even if I got an organization registering me, I still have to pay for the registration fee and air tickets to Barcelona plus some additional expenses. This huge world
congress would allow me to
lobby

with more EU countries about a upcoming Resolution proposed by the European Union and the European Council . The opinions of
each one of these Ministries counts towards this decission that either will allow seal products to be sold freely at the EU and as consequence, this unnecesary cruelty
of keep happening (not only in Canada, but in Namibia, Norway, Russia and Greenland), or their decissions on this Resolutions could end within few years the seal hunt,
specially Canada which will be the country more affected by the ban on seal products at the European Union. As many of you know, I went this year twice to Europe to: Poland, Ireland, UK, Czeck Republic, Sweden and even had meetings at the European Commission and the
European Parliament in Brussels regarding this ban and sponsor paid, but I still owe about $5,000 CDN dollars from the expenses, specially educational materials that I
made in English to give to governments and for the Polish to give away to get support for the ban.

I have no money currently to go on this Third Tour nor for airfare. I will get some money from a kind colleague at the end of this month, but that will just cover half of
the expenses!

I pleaded to big orgs to assist me on this but got not any good response. So I have no other choice now but ask for your help if you can, to help me to keep on lobbying
before this Resolution is decided in November 2008. This could be the last chance for the seals!

You can help in two ways:

1) Dianne of Harpseals.org, kindly offered her organization link to donate by PAYPAL some money urgently need it for this my final attempt to convince  politicians to go for the seal trade ban at the EU.  Harpseals link is:

http://www.harpseals.org/help.html PLEASE NOTE: WRITE: DONATION FOR ERICKA SEAL TOUR  or  CATCA Tour

2) Please send a cheque to: Ericka Ceballos P.O. Box 16021, 617 Belmont Street New Westmister BC  V3M-6W6 Canada

Remember that any amount you donate will help the seals and a 100% of your money will go for this campaign.
Unfortunately time is running out so there is no time to spare. PLEASE DONATE TODAY TO SAVE THE CANADIAN SEALS!

Thank you so much on behalf of our Canadian seals and seals worldwide!

Ladies and Gentlemens

we received horrible information that:

The tourist organization of Banja Luka was “proud” to present the newest offer to tourists who wish to visit Banja Luka. This new offer is the barbarous sport of “bull fighting”. http://www.banjaluka-tourism.com/srp/vijesti.html
Bull fighting is not a national heritage nor any form of tradition. Bull fighting is a twisted form of expressing a rage – its not a sport – its not a game.. Bull fighting (for those who raise fighting bulls) is a sick form of self promotion and self-exposure.. They hope to see bulls doing what they could never have done – to have courage and strength.
Bulls are not meant to cure sick perverted persons – bulls were not meant to be the “crutches” for those who lost their own lost manhood.. bulls should not be used in fighting.
Ladies and gents,
I am writing this letter to express my thoughts and to share with you my deepest concerns for the people in Banja Luka.

I have been informed that the tourist organization of Banja Luka has put ” bull fighting” into their tourist promotion offer.

I am really stunned and horrified by the fact that the tourist organization and the people in Banja Luka see such barbarous acts as a part of their tourist attraction. Bull fighting to me is an act of crime.

If your intentions in Banja Luka is to see “bull fighting” as an entertaining and fun event than I want you to know that I will not be visiting your country in the near future. Bull fighting is not something that people from emancipated parts of the world want to see.
Bullfighting is diabolically wrong, it’s a form of animal abuse and can leave deep marks on the psyche of the younger generations. Bull fighting is not what Banja Luka should be proud of.

Bull fighting is WRONG! I am asking you to stop promoting this barbarous act. Please stop abusing and torturing these innocent animals. Please find more humane materials for Fiestas.

Sincerely,

Slavica Mazak Beslic
