Newest New Year’s resolution sweeping the globe is joining “Veganuary”

We all know that New Year’s is a time that people often try to make positive change in their lives and that resolutions often range from losing weight and quitting cigarette smoking to being better organized and saving money. Boring but effective.

Two years ago, an animal-loving couple in the United Kingdom decided to seize that opportunity for change and are getting people around the world to participate in “Veganuary,” an effort for people to try to eat a plant-based diet free of animal products for just one month.

David Quick Columnist

A website, www.veganuary.com/, provides people with the reasons not to eat meat and dairy, a “vegan starter kit,” recipes and an array of other information, including stories of both everyday and celebrities, including Woody Harrelson, Venus and Serena Williams, Ellen DeGeneres and even College of Charleston math professor Martin Jones.

Jones says the project is a brainchild of a friend, Matthew Glover and his wife, Jane Land.

“(Veganuary) has really grown over the years and their website has been getting more and more hits every year,” says Martin.

The effort is gaining ground in the media, such as the Huffington Post, which last week included participating in Veganuary among “5 Ways to be a Climate-Friendly Eater in 2016.”

Power of Meetup

Stacy Shepanek, who has emerged as a leader in the local vegan and vegetarian community, supports the idea of Veganuary.

“You can do anything for 30 days, and there is no better time than now to go vegan. It’s such a powerful choice. All at once, you can improve your health, the environment and the lives of countless animals and humans. It’s such an easy way to make a huge difference. No wonder so many people are trying it out,” says Shepanek.

As the organizer of the online “Charleston Veggies and Vegans” Meetup group and Facebook page, Shepanek has seen the membership go from 60 to more than 600 in three years. The third annual Vegan Thanksgiving Potluck drew about 125 people in November.

Shepanek says joining the Meetup provides locals with the latest information on two monthly potlucks, dining events and cooking demonstrations as well as restaurants.

Marty’s Place

And Charleston has gained more vegan and vegetarian restaurants, including Gnome on the corner of President and Cannon streets in the fall.

On Sunday, from 1:30-3:30 p.m., the College of Charleston and its Jewish Studies program will hold the grand opening of Marty’s Place, a 5,000-square-foot dining hall devoted to providing kosher, vegan and vegetarian food.

The $1 million dining hall is located in the Sylvia Vlosky Yaschik Jewish Studies Center at 96 Wentworth Street, is named in memory of the long-time pillar of the Charleston Jewish community. Marty’s Place, named for long-time faculty member Marty Perlmutter, is open to the public.

In a college release, Perlmutter says he wanted it the dining hall “to be a place where people do what they do: Get together and eat.”

“It is a vegan/vegetarian restaurant that is designed to be attractive to the local community,” says Perlmutter, the college’s director of Jewish Studies.

Animal Aid Unlimited is a life-changing place for both people and animals in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India.

Founded in 2002, our mission is to rescue and treat the un-owned street animals of Udaipur who have become ill or injured, and through their rescue inspire a community to protect and defend the lives of all animals.

Our work focuses on the vital moment when a resident of Udaipur sees an animal who needs help, and stops to help. Taking action is the pivotal experience that can change everything for good.

By providing a phone number someone can call and a shelter who will help and save, we are inspiring action in the community. Action that though small at first, maybe just a phone call on our helpline, is the first step for someone on the road of becoming the person that animals desperately need.

Our ultimate goal is equality and protection of all animals and a complete end to the use and abuse of animals. We are working for the day that every dog, donkey, cow, pig, fish and mouse can live their lives in freedom.

Based out of Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, our emergency rescue team responds to calls on our help-line reporting sick or wounded animals in need of help throughout the day, every day. Animal Aid is the life-line for thousands of animals who otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance.

With the involvement of thousands of Udaipur residents who have become aware of street animal’s needs, we have rescued more than 45,000 injured or ill dogs, cows, donkeys, birds and cats to date.

Serbia: 3/1/16 – Winter Is Getting A Grip Now. Please Help To Keep The Kitties Warm – Thank You.

Please share and help if you can!

1

It looks like real winter has begun. After a short period of weird, sunny, spring-like weather, totally atypical for this time of year, the icy cold started to tighten its grip and the outdoor temperatures plummeted far below zero a couple of days ago.

We haven’t had any snow yet and no paw prints are visible across the hard and mostly bare ground that’s covered in a layer of frost, but it’s freezing nonetheless.

2

Central heating has been working day and night over the last couple of months to keep the kitties warm as we fortunately still had some heating fuel left from last year’s purchase, but our gas tank is emptying rapidly and right now we have just enough gas for 10 more days.

3

If we fail to raise the funds for a new tank of gas in a flash, we’ll have no choice except to switch to the electric heaters which can’t warm up the house and all of the cats’ rooms sufficiently, not to mention that the electricity bills will be skyrocketing.

The costs of cat food and vet care alone are enormous all year round and when you add the cost of heating fuel during the cold season, it’s a complete disaster. Winter is always hard for a cat sanctuary with a three-digit number of fragile and delicate little furry creatures, many of which are well beyond their golden years and without proper heating their chances of making it through the winter are frighteningly low.

4

We know we should have asked for help earlier as this is the worst possible time for fundraising and we totally understand that most people have wiped out their savings and are struggling to get their finances back on track after the holidays, but we’re dealing with a true emergency and we hope you’ll be able to lend us a helping hand yet again.

Whatever amount you are able to give will be received with heartfelt gratitude, because every donation is literally saving lives!

5

We are doing everything we can and then some to stay afloat and give each of the Felix kitties a fighting chance to see another spring, but we will be lost if you don’t step in!

Please note the petition on the first link is no longer running.

We have got the gas to keep the kitties warm in the past years – lets go for it again now. Please give anything you can, no matter how small; it all adds up.

Please see the gas arriving in past years in some of the photos in the following links – so lets repeat this for the new year.

USA: Activists Sue Oregon to Protect State’s Endangered Gray Wolves.

Activists Sue Oregon to Protect State’s Endangered Gray Wolves

Oregon wildlife officials took wolves off the state endangered species list in November.

Emily J. Gertz is an associate editor for environment and wildlife at TakePart.

Oregon’s recent move to reduce protections for wolves is going to court.

On Dec. 30, three nonprofits filed a lawsuit challenging a November decision by the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife to remove gray wolves from the Oregon endangered species list.

The groups charge that the agency failed to follow the best available science on the health of the wolf population, “prematurely removing protections before wolves are truly recovered,” according to a statement from the Center for Biological Diversity, which joined Oregon Wild and Cascadia Wildlands in taking the state to court. “With only about 80 known adult wolves mostly confined to one small corner of the state, Oregon’s wolf population is far from recovery.”

Gray wolves, which are native to Oregon, were once found statewide and numbered in the hundreds or thousands. But an active statewide eradication program, which paid bounties for dead wolves, wiped out the population between the early 1840s and the late 1940s. The current packs are descended from wolves that were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park and in the state of Idaho in the 1990s, whose populations have grown and spread westward.

Today’s Oregon wolves occupy only a small fraction of their former range. There were 81 known wolves in Oregon at the end of 2014, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and of 16 packs counted in 2015, 13 had pups during the summer.

Removing the wolves—which continue to have federal endangered species protections—from the state endangered species roster didn’t affect how the animals are being managed in Oregon, according to a November statement from the wildlife agency. “Any take of wolves is highly regulated in Oregon, and the delisting does not mean additional take is now allowed,” the agency stated. “Hunters and trappers may not take wolves in Oregon at this time. The Wolf Plan does not allow for general season sport hunting of wolves in any phase of wolf management.”

But the move might pave the way for expanded wolf hunting if the species’ status under federal law changed in the future.

“Though Oregon’s Wolf Management Plan is working for all but the most anti-wolf interests, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is reigniting old conflicts by caving to political pressure and giving serious consideration to weakening basic protections for wolves, allowing ranchers the flexibility to shoot them if they are believed to be posing a threat to livestock,” Oregon Wild stated on its website.

The agency, however, called the decision to delist the wolf at the state level “a vote of confidence” in how the state was balancing the conservation of wolves with the concerns of ranchers.

Serbia: Shelter In Need Of Support – Can You Help This New Year ?

https://www.youcaring.com/for-our-animals-449539#

Our little sanctuary of animal love needs your help! After many years of witnessing cruelty to animals in Serbia we decided to move to a small village in an old house – where everyone is welcome.

Having a mild heart condition I needed peace – peace with my animals. We lived within our means and everyone was happy. As times passes by, our furry family expanded – many mornings we would wake up and another injured or old dog was left on our door step, then a cage with hamsters, then we got a call if we can take some degui squirrels and chinchillas – we couldn’t say no.

Now our “animal kingdom” consists of: 10 dogs, 5 chinchillas, 2 hamsters, 2 hens, 2 ducks and 5 chicken (that shall be laying eggs when they reach adulthood). – most of them are available for adoption to good homes (except chicken and ducks – I don’t want them to finish in someone’s plate) – lots of animals to feed and we try our very best – but still short of 300E/month (about 400$).

We appreciate any help, including old towels and sheets, fleas/tick treatments but most importantly we need to by food for them.

Any donation is appreciated. You are also very much welcome to visit us – anytime, our doors are always open.

THANK YOU!!
