Municipal authorities in the Seferhisar district of the city of Izmir have recently launched a stray animal poisoning spree!

Cats, and dogs, – in short, anything 4-legged that comes along is being poisoned to death these days…

Luckily, dedicated animal rights defenders in the area are working around the clock to stop this poisoning spree.

Please support their fight. Contact the municipality and tell them you know what is going on there and that you protest the poisoning of innocent stray animals in the strongest terms possible.

EP: Animal welfare in Turkey
European Parliamentary question by Hiltrud Breyer (Verts/ALE) and Cem Özdemir (Verts/ALE) to the Commission

22 January 2009
E-0135/09

A large number of citizens and non-governmental organisations have reported on the serious situation for stray dogs in Turkey. The number of stray dogs on the streets is rising steadily and poses a major problem. Tackling the problem is too much for local authorities, and they are taking drastic measures such as mass destruction of animals.

The latest example is the animal refuge in Beykoz. The poor situation there has been a subject of public discussion for months. The number of dogs on the streets is visibly rising, whilst dogs are disappearing without a trace in the Beykoz animal refuge. According to the mayor of Beykoz, there is nothing wrong with conditions in the animal refuge. However, we are receiving frequent reports of dreadful conditions.

1. Is the Commission aware of this alarming situation for stray dogs in Turkey?

2. What does the Commission plan to do?

3. According to animal welfare organisations, EUR 780 000 of EU funding has been allocated for castration projects for stray dogs in Turkey. Is this correct? If so, precisely how have these funds been used?
