URGENT! Ukraine- Do Not Let Your Zoo Animals Starve to Death!!

The conflict in Ukraine hasn’t just caused the suffering of its citizens — animals in Kharkiv Zoo have been left to starve to death.

UPDATE (MARCH 9)

The wildlife park asked Ukranian residents to help.

According to a Facebook page created shortly after the zoo’s plea, many heeded the call to action: An update on the Facebook group posted Saturday, on March 8, said the animals are OK for now.

“We just got back from the zoo- literally the entire city had brought bags and bags of food to donate: cabbage, bread, carrots, beets, greens, you name it!

The zoo staff was using tractors to haul the food around.  We spoke to the zoo director and she said they’d also received some cash donations,” the page announced.

——————————————————

Animals in a Ukrainian zoo have been left to die of starvation in the wake of the country’s political turmoil, it has been claimed.

The director of Kharkiv Zoo blamed Ukraine’s warring politicians for failing to provide funds, saying the zoo only have enough food to last until Monday, March 10.

Alexey Grigoriev is said to be “in tears” over the plight of the animals, and has pleaded with the prime minister for help.

“Our animals are not fighting for power, they do not share anyone’s political views, they just want to live,” said a statement by the zoo. “Without emergency measures, our completely innocent animals will start dying next week.”

A pregnant elephant was hungry and on the point of expiring from exhaustion, it was claimed. Local reports say funds earmarked for the zoo have been sent elsewhere.

A letter sent by the director Grigoriev to Ukraine’s prime minister said: “The Kharkiv zoo animals on the verge of starvation.” Suppliers have been providing food for free for three months but have now refused to provide more, he said, pleading with the government for immediate action.

The country – partially invaded by Russia last week – is also on the point of bankruptcy.

A local campaigner for the zoo, Olga Sitkovskaya, said: “I spoke to the director and, sorry for this detail, but this clever, strong adult man burst into tears of helplessness.”

The city allocates funds needed for maintaining the zoo, but Kiev redirects the money to some of its needs. As a result, the animals in the zoo, are in a catastrophic situation.

“Along with the whole country, our zoo is living through difficult and terrifying times,” said the zoo statement. By Monday, we will have nothing with which to feed the animals.”

The zoo dates from the 1890s and survived two world wars.

Do not allow, now, their lives to be lost!!

These animals are your responsibility, feed them!!

Dozens of people have been kiled in Ukraine since the fighting began there more than a fortnight ago. But Ukraine’s citizens aren’t the only ones suffering — the animals in at least one of the country’s zoos have been left to starve to death.

According to the director of Kharkiv Zoo, the conflict in Kiev has leached the city funds the zoo relies upon to care for and feed its animals. Though donations of food and money have temporarily allowed the animals to survive so far, activists say the funds are running out — and they need help from the government, fast.

Polar bears, lions, tigers and a pregnant elephant are among those in danger of suffering slow, painful deaths because of Ukraine’s leaders’ neglect.

Animals aren’t political. They have no idea about the turmoil that’s wracking their country. All they know is that they’re hungry — and if they don’t get help soon, they’ll die.

Ask the government to restore funding for the Kharkiv Zoo and save the animals who live there before it’s too late!

Breaking News: I am writing to update you on the developing threat to the hunting ban. We have been informed that a motion to amend the Hunting Act, effectively legalising hunting, could be laid before Parliament within just a few days, most likely being debated on Wednesday 26th March. The threat is real and we have to act now

The Government have indicated that they are considering amending the Hunting Act by using an Affirmative Statutory Instrument (SI), a type of legislation that can be used to push unpopular changes through Parliament with less scrutiny than a full vote on repeal would require.

This SI would lift the limit on the number of dogs used to flush out wild mammals and in doing so, with a full pack of up to 40 hounds being used, would make the Act impossible to police and undermine the legislation to such an extent it would be made toothless.

We believe the vote could take place on Wednesday 26th March so we need you to contact your MP immediately and urge them to vote against this devious attempt to bring back cruelty.

Once you’ve taken action please also share with your friends and family.

Thank you for your support.

England: Tony Benn – Animal Advocate – Rest In Peace, and Thank You !

U Flag

Tony-Benn 1

Photo – The Guardian.

I can recall; many years ago; probably 20 or so, attending a lobby at the UK Houses of Parliament here in London, with regard the live transport of animals – what has always been my No. 1 hate.

There were probably 600-700 of us; it was a good turnout on an issue which the vast majority of the UK public feel very strongly about.

Whilst we queued outside to enter the House of Commons lobby area, there was the usual ‘coming and going’ of Members of Parliament (MP’s).  Every one of them just ignored us and what we were there campaigning for – we were viewed in their eyes as nothing much better than something you get on the soles of your shoes whilst walking through any wet street in London town

But whilst we stood in the queue, being ignored by so many; one man appeared and commenced to make his way along the line of the queue; shaking hands and offering very much needed words of support for what we were there for – .stopping live animal transport.

That man was Tony Benn, who has very sadly passed away today after a life of political fighting for the good.  Tony was also a very dedicated animal welfare / rights campaigner and a vegetarian of some 30+ years.

Shaking hands with Tony that day and hearing his supportive comments were enough alone to have made the whole thing worthwhile.

Tony was a great voice for the animals and today is a very big and sad loss for the animals (and human rights) which he has fought for over such a long time.

Rest in peace Tony and thank you on behalf of the animals and us all for the compassion and good work you undertook to give them a much stronger voice – you will be sadly missed, as will your excellent advice and knowledge on so many different subjects.

”Tony Benn spoke his mind and spoke up for his values. Whether you agreed with him or disagreed with him, everyone knew where he stood and what he stood for.

“He believed in movements and mobilised people behind him for the causes he cared about, often unfashionable ones. In a world of politics that is often too small, he thought big about our country and our world.”

England: Our Annual ‘Clustrmap’ Update Has Just Taken Place.

England

Dear alll;

today you will see our Clustrmap, the world map with red dots on the left side of the site; revert back to being blank, or just showing visitors for the single day of today.

This is a standard practice and will start afresh around 12th March.

Here are a couple of stats for the site so far:

We have had no less than 513,416 views and you have kindly left 3,891 comments on the site.

We try, but as you will appreciate, it can be almost impossible to return requested info regarding some comments left on the site.  Unfortunately there is neither the time or personnel to undertake this – we are a volunteer run group.

So if you see the world map has lost all of its red dots in the near future; don’t worry, it is not a problem with your computer – it is just an annual update to our system.  Obviously, the more hits / visits we get when we return to a ‘blank world’, the sooner all those wonderful red dots will start appearing again.

Doing what we can to spread to the global world about global animal abuse and suffering.

Please come back and visit us again – and spread the SAV word !

Thanks and regards

Rom 8 Mar 1

Rom 8 Mar 2

On 8 March, Romania joined the International Protest, initiated by European countries, against dog killing in Romania.

More than 500 people have participated at the protest in Bucharest (near Romanian Government), where animal lovers from other towns like Pitesti (100 people!), Ploiesti, Buzau, Ramnicu-Valcea, Moreni have also arrived.

In other around 14 towns from Romania have been as well organized protests!

We are very grateful to all of you who organized, spread, participated in your countries, in so many towns, showing the cause of the stray dogs from Romania are incredible supported from abroad.

It was probably the largest Protest has ever happened for the same cause in Europe!

Thank you!

SeaWorld’s Worst Nightmare: Calif. Lawmaker to Propose Ban on Orcas in Captivity

If passed, the bill would be the most comprehensive protection law for captive orcas in the United States in more than 40 years.

David Kirby has been a professional journalist for 25 years. His third book, ‘Death at Seaworld,’ was published in 2012.

In a surprising move that is sure to send shock waves across the entire captive whale and dolphin industry, a California lawmaker will propose legislation to outlaw Shamu shows at SeaWorld San Diego.

State Assemblymember Richard Bloom, D–Santa Monica, will introduce Friday the Orca Welfare and Safety Act, which would make it illegal to “hold in captivity, or use, a wild-caught or captive-bred orca for performance or entertainment purposes.” The bill would also ban artificial insemination of captive killer whales in California and block the import of orcas or orca semen from other states.

Violators would face a fine up to $100,000 and/or six months in a county jail.

“There is no justification for the continued captive display of orcas for entertainment purposes,” Bloom declared in a written statement prior to a press conference to be held at the Santa Monica Pier. “These beautiful creatures are much too large and far too intelligent to be confined in small, concrete pens for their entire lives. It is time to end the practice of keeping orcas captive for human amusement.”

According to Bloom, the law would be “the most comprehensive protection law for captive orcas in the United States in over 40 years.”

Under the terms of the bill, all 10 orcas held in tanks at SeaWorld San Diego, the only California facility that has whales, “shall be rehabilitated and returned to the wild where possible.” If that is not possible, then the whales must be “transferred and held in a sea pen that is open to the public and not used for performance or entertainment purposes.”

Exempt from the legislation are any orcas held for rehabilitation after a rescue or stranding, or for research purposes. But even these animals would have to be returned to the ocean or sent to a sea pen.

It is not the first time state lawmakers have tried to outlaw the captivity of killer whales, the world’s largest dolphin. South Carolina passed a bill in 1992 against captivity for dolphins and porpoises following efforts by the South Carolina Humane Society to stop a proposed dolphin park in Myrtle Beach. Just last month, New York state Sen. Greg Ball, R-Carmel, introduced a bill to ban orca captivity in that state.

Of course, there are no captive orcas in South Carolina or New York, making the California bill far more than a symbolic gesture.

At least five countries—India, Croatia, Hungary, Chile, and Costa Rica—have also outlawed all cetacean captivity, while Switzerland has banned captivity for dolphins.

Dr. Naomi Rose, marine mammal scientist at the Animal Welfare Institute, said the bill was inspired by the orcas-in-captivity documentary Blackfish.

“The Blackfish effect has never been in greater evidence—everything has led to this, the first serious legislative proposal to prohibit the captive display of this highly intelligent and social species,” Rose wrote in an email. “SeaWorld should join with this effort rather than continue to fight it. They can be on the right side of history.”

Assembly member Bloom reached out to Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director of Blackfish, for help with the bill, who in turn consulted with Rose.

“We did not initiate this proposal,” Rose wrote. “But once they reached out to us, we dove in wholeheartedly and assisted in every way we could—helping with the bill language, information, and fact-gathering, and getting support from various sectors of the public, including the scientific community.”

Rose also gave credit to former SeaWorld trainers featured in the documentary for supporting the legislation. Rose, Cowperthwaite, and former SeaWorld trainers Carol Ray and John Hargrove were scheduled to appear with Bloom at the Friday press conference.

Should the bill become law, SeaWorld might want to look at other highly successful aquariums that do not keep cetaceans in swimming pools. The Monterey Aquarium in northern California, for example, is routinely packed with visitors, without a single whale or dolphin in sight.

In South Carolina, where orcas will likely never entertain people, staffers at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston routinely direct visitors to local waterways if they want to see dolphins.

The Charleston Post and Courier reported in 2010 that when tourists ask to see the dolphins at the aquarium, the facility’s CEO, Kevin Mills, “smiles and answers, ‘Just walk out on our observation deck and you’re bound to see them, swimming freely in the harbor.’
