ETN Ambassador Maja Princess of Hohenzollern’s annual Christmas letter:
Before God all creatures are equal, but there is no place for them in the Catholic church.
The cruel and brutal treatment of animals is our daily bread in our work for animal welfare. Especially in Southern and Eastern Europe – the catholic-orthodox countries – we experience time and time again how abandoned cats and dogs are left to their fate, without love and care, often victims of hunger, speeding cars or brutal violence. So many of them are beaten, locked up, are kept on a chain all their lives and are abused. Many times, in Spain, I found dogs and cats with their eyes gouged out or their tails or ears cut off; and that is not even speaking of the horrors inside the “Perreras” (killing stations) where hundreds of thousands of animals each year are murdered – often by burning them alive.
Last year we terminated, together with ETN e.v. (http://www.etn-ev.de/) , a dog massacre in Romania, where approx. 300 dogs a day were killed by bashing their heads in with a spade.
Since the beginning of 2004 approx. 10 million stray dogs have been killed brutally in Romania in this and other ways. If the victims were Humans the term “genocide” would certainly be used.
In Italy we fight, in cooperation with ETN e.v., Tasso e.v. (http://www.tasso.net/) and bmt. e.v. (http://www.bmt-tierschutz.de/) , against the abominable „Canili“, inside which approx. 550,000 dogs and cats are lingering in crammed spaces inside huge store houses where they die slow deaths from injury, sickness, starvation, lack of care and medical attention.
(Please help these animals and sign our petition “Canili”)

Thousands of puppies die in Hungary and Poland because they are bred non-stop for being flogged off cheaply on “rummage tables”. They are torn away from their mothers much too early to be sold on weekly markets in Germany.
Again and again we seek to understand why people treat animals so cruelly.
And indeed we find the cause for the rampant animal abuse and mistreatment in Eastern and Southern Europe within the catholic church. The catholic church explicitely denies animals a soul and any and all claims to care and welfare. The church thus degrades and animal to the rank of an unfeeling object, and that is the way he/she is subsequently treated.
This is why we repeatedly demand of “our” German Pope, who should really be having a different education of the heart when it comes to animals, to finally acknowledge that animals are part of creation and henceforth, and naturally, DO have a soul as we do. If only he’d mention this in one single sentence during his “Urbi & Orbi” speech and gave this message to his priests on their way to their flocks – he could save millions of animal lives. If he wanted to.
Sadly neither the Pope nor the 16 dioceses the ETN e.v. had individually addressed have agreed to cooperating on animal welfare issues or have indeed, given any statement at all concerning the welfare of animals.
Instead we had this reply from the Vatican:
“There is no place for animals in the catholic church”.
A sentence like a punch to the gut and a death sentence for millions of animals.
Perhaps animals would enjoy a different status if they paid church tax.
Although a set of ethics that grants animals rights of their own towards mankind can easily be found in and justified by scripture. We therefore demand of the church to finally take moral responsibility for that which they claim to stand for and defend: equal respect and care for all creatures of the earth, as it is unambiguously laid down in the bible.
When I look into the eyes of my dogs, every single one of whom I have rescued from the clutches of brutal animal abusers, I know for certain that they call a soul their own. With some Humans I am less sure.
Please include our animals in your prayers, and remember them on Christmas Eve – because they are a part of us and enrich our lives in myriad ways.
Sincerely,
your
Maja Princess of Hohenzollern
