Please Sign the Pledge to STOP SHARK FINNING Today !

17 January 2011

Tens of millions of sharks are killed each year, many of them to meet the demand for shark fin soup, a Chinese delicacy.

Shark finning is a cruel and wasteful practice that involves slicing off a shark’s fins and throwing the body — often while the shark is still alive — back into the water. Shark populations cannot sustain the current slaughter rates.

Progress is being made — please help — sign our No Shark Fin pledge today!

The only way to enforce shark finning legislation and ensure that no finning has taken place is to require that sharks be landed with their fins still naturally attached.

I am pleased to report that the European Parliament recently adopted a Parliamentary Resolution calling for the European Commission to deliver a legislative proposal to end the removal of shark fins on-board vessels — without exception.

The Resolution came about after 423 MEPs, more than 50 percent of the Parliament’s Members, signed a Written Declaration showing their support for a fins-attached policy.

You can help stop the trade in shark fins too: Never consume or serve any products containing shark fin — and sign our pledge today!

In the United States, President Barack Obama recently signed the Shark Conservation Act into law. It brings Pacific fisheries into line with Atlantic fisheries by requiring that all sharks be landed with their fins still naturally attached (and will strengthen the Shark Finning Prohibition Act of 2000).

Please help us end this cruel and wasteful practice, support our campaign and say no to shark fin products. Signal your support for sharks — sign our pledge!

Thank you for all that you do to help animals.

Russia: Unpunished Shocking Animal Murders – Petition Calling for Legislation for Animals – Please Sign.

Unpunished Shocking Animal Murders In Russia

Petition Link:http:

www.thepetitionsite.com/1/unpunished-shocking-animal-murders-in-russia/

Russia has no federal law regarding animal protection — leaving some animals subject to abuse and torture.
Recently, video clips of a dog being abused by members of the Russian Army surfaced on the internet. Although complaints have been filed, justice has yet to be served due to a lack of legislation restricting these actions. Concerned citizens however, have been inspired to take a stand.

Here is what they have to say about the situation.

I encourage you to join me in telling Prime Minister Putin to pursue an adoption of Federal law regarding animal protection in Russia. Without a working federal law of animal protection, the civilized and culturally developed Russia can be considered one of the most backward countries when it comes to animal welfare.
Help now to protect our animals of this horrible “nobody cares” reality! Please sign this petition to send a strong message to Prime Minister Putin.

Petition Wording

Unpunished Shocking Animal Murders In Russia

Target: Prime Minister Vladimir Putin

Sponsored by: Citizens of Russian Federation

This petition has been created to end unpunished cruelty and propaganda of sadism towards animals in Russia. Our country still hasn’t got federal law of animal protection. Any content that includes brutal killings of animals is free to publish on the Internet. People, who spread provocative content, propose to unite and commit such things in their cities.

Lately some videos shot with mobile phone appeared on one of our social network sites. The incident shown on this video took place in the Russian army. Soldiers under the guidance of a warrant officer are killing dogs with unbelievable cruelty, jabbing a knife into dog’s ear or cutting a dog’s head with a shovel.

Materials on this case have been sent to Military Office of Public Prosecutor but we have no way to bring these people to justice, because the propaganda of cruelty to animals has yet to be banned in Russia.

Please urge the Russian Prime Minister to assert influence on establishing of juristic base for solving this problem and speed up an adoption of Federal law about animal protection.

Dear all,

Thanks to Twyla from CETFA drawing my attention to this, I watched photos and footage today on the website of KARA (Korean Animal Rights Advocates) showing the methods the Korean government is presently using to kill over one million farm-animals due to disease outbreaks. The animals are undergoing torture by being buried alive. I found it extremely disturbing to watch, and feel we must try to do something. I know everyone is busy, but this may make a difference- please will you read the following?

Since the announcement of a case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in South Korea in late November 2010, more than one million cloven-hoofed animals have been ‘culled’ in the most horrific manner. Massive numbers of live pigs (as well as cows, sheep, goats, and deer) have been pushed into trenches and buried. And the inhumane killings continue to this day.

A Korean animal protection organization reports the sight of pigs trying to escape from the trenches, being ‘killed with excavators by being crushed, hit and having their heads split open by the blades’. Facing a similarly cruel fate, baby pigs were left to suffocate to death after being put alive into bags and buried. The treatment of farm animals during this outbreak is so violent that the South Korean government is now forced to offer therapy to help workers traumatised by their participation in the live burials.

While the Korean government has recently finally started conducting mass vaccination of cattle and pigs to help deal with the FMD outbreak, the cruel killing of animals continues, as more cases of foot-and-mouth disease are announced and the high numbers of vaccines needed is taking time to secure. In addition, avian influenza has started to strike in chicken and duck farms of the South-West part of the country, and the South Korean government is responding by also burying chickens and ducks alive. It is estimated that more than 2,700,000 birds have already been killed in this horrific manner.

Please could everyone write a polite email to the following people?

Please use the sample letter below if required; or copy this and personalise.

To save time, you can write one version and send it away to all 4 people below at once. I know we are all busy, so it need not be long, what counts is that they hear our voices. (Please note that there is no Dutch Ambassador to South Korea, so we can send our emails to any European country.  Example given are for German and French ambassadors.

German Ambassador to South Korea: koremb-ge@mofat.go.kr

French Ambassador to South Korea: koremb-fr@mofat.go.kr

South Korea Minister of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr. Yoo Jeongbok:  master@mifaff.go.kr

OIE Delegate of South Korea, Dr Koyoon Chang:  rr.asiapacific@oie.int

In addition to denouncing the outrageous cruelty involved in the culling, please request an immediate stop to the burying of live animals. Remind the Ambassador that South Korea is a member of OIE (Office International des Epizooties), and that, based on the OIE Guidelines the welfare of animals must be ensured until they are dead. The live burial of animals is thus against the international guidelines that South Korea agreed to abide by, and any killing of animals, if unavoidable, must be conducted in strict accordance with the international animal welfare guidelines of the OIE.

While the primary cause of such outbreaks lies in the conditions food animals are forcibly raised in, and the ultimate solution is to put a stop to factory farming, it is important to address the handling of animals in such cases to make sure that the least cruel protocols possible are being used.

It is wonderful that you have taken the time to do this, thank-you,

Lesley and everyone at Eyes on Animals

Topic: The mass slaughter of farm animals in South Korea in a most horrific manner since the announcement of a case of foot-and-mouth-disease (FMD) in late November 2010 which was brought to my attention by Eyes on Animals (lesley@eyesonanimals.com), a Dutch based organisation.

To: South Korea Minister of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and Mr. Yoo Jeongbok, OIE Delegate of South Korea, Dr. Koyoon Chang:

I wish, personally, to bring attention to the above mentioned individuals and organizations residing in South Korea, the methods the South Korean government is presently using to kill over on million farm animals due to disease outbreaks:

1. More than one million clover-hoofed animals have been and continue to be culled. Live pigs, cows, sheep, goats and deer have been and continue to be pushed into trenches and buried.

2. A Korean animal protection organization: see website from KARA (Korean Animal Rights Advocates) reports the sight of pigs, trying to escape from the trenches, being killed with excavators by being crushed, hit and having their heads split open by the blades. The South Korean government is now forced to offer therapy to help workers traumatized by their participation in these live burials.

3. While the South Korean government has recently started mass vaccination of cattle and pigs in dealing with the FMD outbreak, this above mentioned cruelty to animals continues.

4. In addition, avian influenza has started to strike in chicken and duck farms of the south-west part of the country. The South Korean government is responding by likewise burying chickens and ducks alive. It is estimated that more than 2,700.000 birds have been killed in this horrific manner.

I, myself, wish to personally request the immediate stop to the burying of live animals. In particular, I would like to mention that South Korea is a member of OIE (Office International des Epizooties). Based on the OIE Guidelines, the welfare of animals must be ensured until their death. Thus, the live burial of animals is against the international guidelines which South Korea agreed to abide by, and that any killing of animals, if unavoidable, must be conducted in strict accordance with the international animal welfare guidelines of the OIE.

With concern for these cruel and unnecessary practices in culling animals,

Serbia: Farm Animal Update 12 and 13/1/11. Throw Straw in the Liquid Excrement and Let Them Get On With It – Nothing Really Changes at the Serbian Republic Veterinary Ministry.

*** Update 13/01/11. ***

We now have the e mail contact addresses of the Republic Veterinary Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, Belgrade, should anyone wish to contact them about the following.

We would suggest that the ‘Subject’ line of the e mail be left blank, but please ensure that your e mail does refer to conditions at the farm of Jovo Raickovic in the village of Rusko selo.  Images of the conditions at the farm can be copied from our post and attached to the e mail if required.

Please e mail all of the following.

Regarding our previous posts relating to the terrible conditions that animals are being kept in at a farm in the village of Rusko selo:

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2010/11/23/serbia-november-2010-conditions-ok-at-a-farm-according-to-serbian-veterinary-ministry-and-complaining-campaigners-dont-pressure-us/

https://serbiananimalsvoice.wordpress.com/2010/11/26/serbia-farm-animal-conditions-update-261110-formal-statement-on-conditions-now-provided-by-ciwf-uk/

We now have updated photographs from the 8th January 2011.

A criminal charge has already been taken out by campaigners against the owner, Jovo Raickovic, but the republic veterinary inspectors have informed campaigners that they are unable to do anything !

Jovo Raickovic and the veterinary inspectors appear to think that by dumping a load of straw into the liquified excrement (see past pictures in the above links), the problem is solved.  Far from it !

the animals are obviously still suffering as can be seen in the conditions viewed in the new photographs.

It would appear that nobody in the Serbian republic veterinary inspection really wants to do anything about this, and that means Rep vet inspector Mr Tasic Dragan  and his supervisor / manager, Mrs Laketa Ksenija.

Conditions such as this probably exist on many other farms right across Serbia.  Completely ignored by the Serbian Republic so-called ‘Veterinary Inspectors’ !

These photographs and this (SAV) link, again with the previous links, will be forwarded to both the EU and to major global tv networks.  The veterinary inspectors are not doing the job which they are paid to do – and that is to ensure animal welfare regulations are being enforced.

On this farm the cows are still in the same location as you can see; the only difference from before is that they have now had straw thrown into the liquid excrement.  If the republic veterinary inspectors consider that this is the solution to the problem, then we have to disagree with them.

They are incompetent and they do not care a damn about animal welfare, despite the job titles that they may have.

We will be obtaining e mal contact details for Dragan and Ksenija in the very near future so that you can write and mail them directly to express your disgust at their total inaction.

Contact details if you wish to e mail the republic ministry of Agriculture about this are provided at the start of this post.

Further Photographs:

Please check out the two links given above for many photographs of the even worse conditions BEFORE the straw was thrown down.

Serbia: Hunters First Wound a Pregnant Pig, Then Finally Kill Her by Driving Over Her in a Vehicle. And This is Done Outside of the Pig Hunting ‘Season’ by Hunters on A Bird Reserve Which They are Paid to Help Protect / Manage !

Below is a criminal charge made by Serbian campaigners against the hunters organisation `Jazovo`, Kikinda  and `Perjanica` Mokrin.  On a special reserve for the protection of birds, the hunters killed a wild, PREGNANT pig.

The pig has been killed out of the hunting season, and she was killed by firstly being shot and wounded by a hunter, and then she was DRIVEN OVER by a car !

We are providing many pictures of the scene below.

Serbian law demands a break (cessation) period for the hunting of female pigs (sows), especially if they are pregnant.  The hunters have ignored this legislation and have killed the pregnant pig on a special reserve for wild birds which is known as Ottis tarda.

We have been innformed that the hunters organisation `Perjanica` has a contract with Republic of Serbia for the region of Vojvodina and the protection of the special reserve, Ottis tarda.  The hunters have been awarded several million dinars for the care of Ottis tarda; but allegedly they informed the republic that there were 22 wild pigs in the area when in fact it is known by campaigners that there are only between 8 and 12.

In the past there have been many hundreds, but now the hunters are destroying everything for their ‘fun’.

The hunters organisation `Perjanica` also deals with Italian hunters who pay to be able to hunt quail.

The hunters organisation `Perjanica` has a president named Petar Bugarcic; who it is alleged has been growing and selling wheat which is farmed on Ottis tarda, even thought the law calls simply for the area to be left as grass simply for use by ground nesting birds.  Also it is alleged that the regional secretariat for nature protection at Novi Sad has provided the hunters with a permit which must protect ground nesting birds; but again it is seen that these areas are being used for illegal wheat growing in order to make more money for certain persons.  It is understood that pesticides are often used on the reservation ( for the wheat production ?) and that the use of these has also killed many ground nesting birds.

Belgium: Petition to Stop the Relaxation of Laws on Foxhunting – Please Sign and Crosspost.

There is a petition now established to prevent relaxation of  Belgian laws on fox hunting.

Please make sure you sign using the guide below – and then crosspost to all your contacts please.

Thanks – SAV.

——————————————————

We have been informed of the intention of the Felmish government to relax laws on hunting foxes. Fox hunting there has so far been tightly controlled and very limited – but apparently the argument is now that the foxes kill too many chickens (??) and the hunters are to be given license now to kill larger numbers.

There’s a petition here – please sign:
