The US Army Corp of Engineers has contracted with Wildlife Services, the “notorious” and secretive government agency, to slaughter nearly 11,000 double-crested cormorants and destroy more than 26,000 double-crested cormorant nests on East Sand Island on the mouth of the Columbia River on the border of Washington and Oregon. The killing has already started.
The cormorants are being scapegoated and killed for doing what comes natural, eating salmon. However the reality is that the vast majority of salmon are being killed by human activities including hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River, overfishing, and clearcut logging that pollutes the river.
In two weeks we will send this petition to every US Senator and ask them to take action and stop the US Army Corp of Engineers killing the cormorants and focus on the real cause of the salmon population decline.

Three great stories, all with very happy endings, which shows the excellent work of Animal Aid Unlimited in India. Although hard to watch at first, all have great endings. Enjoy
A severely injured puppy had gone to a temple to find shelter. We found him covered in blood and in critical condition.
Watch his amazing recovery!
Watch the amazing recovery of a street dog gravely injured from a brutal injury on her head.
An elderly street dog had been stuck in a sewage gutter and was also badly injured.
We are sure you will agree; some brilliant work to help animals which are more than in need – desperate !
Thank you.

Dear Mark,
This is truly messed up. Turtle Island just obtained secret, graphic photos of dolphins, sharks and sea turtles and other animals killed by the California driftnet fishery. These disturbing images are heartbreaking. But seeing them has motivated me to fight even harder to shut down the catastrophic California driftnet fishery for swordfish. We’ve got a chance right now to shut this fishery down and that’s why I need your help!
Turtle Island has obtained dozens of photos of the true cost of this fishery: hundreds of dead wild dolphins, whales, sharks, sea turtles and more
More than 885 wild dolphins and whales in the last decade died through drowning and injury in the fishery
Driftnet gear is so destructive that it is banned by the United Nations in international ocean waters
California taxpayers are paying up to $2.7 million per year to prop up this fishery
More sustainable alternative fishing methods exist, and will cut bycatch by 80%
Todd Steiner,
Director – Turtle Island Restoration Network

VICTORY: Barbaric ‘Toro de la Vega’ Bull Stabbing Festival Finally Banned!
We’ve just received some wonderful news – a horrific annual “festival” in which men on foot and horseback pursue and stab a terrified young bull to death, has just effectively been banned by the regional government in Spain.
The Toro de la Vega “festival” has, until now, taken place every September in the autonomic region of Castilla y Léon, Spain. The event entails chasing a young bull through the streets of Tordesillas and stabbing him with darts and spears until he is bleeding and crippled. His tail is cut off while he’s still alive. When he dies of his injuries, the person who ultimately killed him is awarded a ceremonial spear and a medal by the city council.

Compassionate people, including tens of thousands of PETA supporters as well as local Spanish groups such as PACMA, have been protesting against this cruelty for years. Now our efforts have finally paid off!
Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our actions or otherwise spoken out against this cruelty.
This victory is part of a wider movement in Spain, as more and more people are turning against events such as bullfighting and bull runs.
To date, more than 100 towns have banned these events. The tide is turning against barbaric so-called “traditions” – and with your help, we’ll keep on fighting until no more animals suffer slow and painful deaths in the name of entertainment.

SAV Comment – over 600,000 people have major concerns in the EU. But does the EU listen to its citizens or does the Commission simply override the Parliament and the people as it did with the 1 million plus calling for a maximum 8hr maximum journey time for animals in transport ?
We hope, but see this continued ignorance of the situation as yet another example of how the EU dismisses its people – and maybe yet another example why the UK will vote to leave the useless EU in June.
Our previous posts on EU intensive rabbit farming:

Latest from CIWF (UK):
Dear Mark,

Thank you so much for being one of 601,435 people who are calling on Europe’s politicians to End the Cage Age for farmed rabbits. We’ve been overwhelmed by your support for this important issue.
Rabbits in our childhood stories may lead idyllic lives, but the shocking truth is that, every year in the EU, over 320 million rabbits are confined to tiny, barren cages. Unable to hop, skip or jump, to choose when to be alone or to seek companionship, or even to stretch. Cages are a true horror story of factory farming.
I took over 40 cartoon rabbits to Brussels to deliver our giant petition, on your behalf, in the form of a comic book. Why? To draw attention to the vast gap between fiction and reality.
And already the European Parliament is listening to our demands: German MEP, Stefan Eck, will be writing a report over the coming months, calling on the European Commission to draft legislation on the welfare of rabbits.
The report is likely to be discussed by the Agriculture Committee of the European Parliament in September, and be voted on by all MEPs in late 2016 or early 2017. When that time comes, we’ll need your help to make sure the Parliament votes in favour of the report.
And tweet Stefan Eck MEP to show your support for his rabbit report.
Thank you again for being one of the 601,435 people who are calling on the EU to End the Cage Age for rabbits.
Best wishes,
James West
