Dear friends,

For the Yulin dog meat festival, dogs are beaten or bled to death — or boiled alive, shaking in a world of pain. They’re hung upside down from hooks, a slit cut from their anus and skin ripped off their bodies, then sold to be eaten.

The suffering must be unbearable — new research shows that in terms of emotion, dogs’ brains are much like ours, something dog owners and lovers understand well. When we see dogs for what they are — living beings with thoughts and feelings —

When our numbers are great enough, Avaaz will take out ads, work with influential celebrities, run the first independent national poll on dog-eating in China, and put this issue on front pages everywhere until Chinese authorities act.

Add your name and tell everyone:

Thanks to brave Chinese activists, the festival gets smaller each year, and Yulin authorities eventually withdrew their sponsorship of the festival and even banned their employees from attending. Momentum is building.

If millions of us raise our voices now, we can save thousands of pups from unimaginable torture. The Yulin festival isn’t a centuries old tradition — it was started in 2010! And many argue that it was mainly to boost industry sales — not so much to sustain an old tradition. Time is running out.

Sign the petition then forward this to friends and family — let’s make this huge!

Thousands of Chinese citizens have protested the festival, but authorities won’t act until they see how badly it’s hurting China’s global image, which they’ve been working hard to improve. That’s where we come in.

Let’s show the Chinese government that the world is calling on them to stop this puppy slaughter immediately!

Our community has campaigned against the most cruel bull festival in Spain, against the discarding and killing of male baby chicks in Germany, and against terrible conditions on farms in Spain and France. Now it’s time to speak out for ‘man’s best friend’, and get this puppy slaughter stopped for good.

With hope,  Rewan, Nick, Patricia, Jooyea, Aften, Alice and the entire Avaaz team

England: Monday 29th August – Can You Do Something For The Global Day Of Action Against Live Exports ?

Website:  Still Under Production – see below.

Message: I’m writing to invite you to take part in a global day of action against live animal transportation on Monday August 29th – the 20th anniversary of the biggest live export disaster when more than 67,000 sheep died as the ship carrying them burned.

Although I am coordinating it on behalf of Compassion in World Farming, it is not their day. The Animals Are Not Freight website, logo and all associated resources will not be CIWF-branded, and the message each participating group gives out is entirely up to them.

The aim is to demonstrate global opposition to this global trade. It’s a chance for us all to come together and speak with one voice, while adapting the precise message for the decision-makers, media and public in our own regions and countries.

To be effective, we need groups of all sizes around the world taking action, and as a powerful voice for animals in Serbia, we really need you!

Compassion plans to hold a media event in London plus an event for our supporters to attend (details to be finalised). Our European offices will all be organising their own actions, and we will be working hard to get the message out online, too. And of course, I am approaching groups all over the world. Some – including in South Africa, Canada, Australia and Iraq – have already pledged to take part.

It would be wonderful if you could organise an event – a candlelit vigil, a march, a photo stunt for the media, a remembrance service for the animals who have died, a demonstration outside your government’s offices… whatever you think appropriate. The bigger the better for this global day of action. We need the world to take notice.

The Animals Are Not Freight website – which is on its way – will allow groups to upload any event they organise, and individuals to download social media images, placards and other resources, all with the Animals Are Not Freight logo.

We hope you will get involved. Please do ask if you have any questions.

All the best,

Kate Fowler

FELIX

felix cartoon 2Well, Hannah and Chantal have grown big and old enough to handle surgery, so both of them were spayed three days ago.

To our huge surprise, Chantal turned out to be a boy (who will most likely have his name changed to Chanty) as we’ve never even checked his gender – we were told he was a she and we accepted that statement at face value.

However, he is definitely a boy and he was an abdominal cryptorchid; one of his testicles normally descended into scrotum, but it was almost totally stunted, while the other one was retained in the abdominal cavity and significantly bigger.

The result is that instead of a routine neuter surgery which would have lasted 15 minutes at most, the vet needed to make an incision along Chanty’s abdomen to remove the retained testicle and perform a surgical procedure which resembles a spay surgery for a female cat.

Both Hannah and Chanty were operated on under inhalation anesthesia and are now receiving antibiotics but they are recovering nicely and most importantly, they are not touching their wounds.

Please help us cover the costs of their surgeries with whatever you can spare.

No amount is ever too small!
