This 300 Pound Football Player Runs on a Vegan Diet

Becky Striepe

Eating vegan gets a lot of attention as a way to cleanse or lose weight, and I think that this method for promoting veganism isn’t always helpful. It focuses on veganism as a crash diet, rather than a lifestyle choice. That’s why I was thrilled to run across the amazing story of defensive lineman David Carter who went vegan to improve his health—and stayed vegan because he’s never felt better.

Carter was trying to reach a weight goal of 300 pounds. At 285 pounds, he was eating massive amounts of dairy products to up his weight, and he felt terrible. In a GQ interview, he described a life of chronic, debilitating pain from tendinitis that at first he blamed on his day job.

When Carter learned that dairy can sometimes exacerbate tendinitis, he decided to give eating vegan a try. He told GQ: “I realized I was making everything worse. I was feeding the tendinitis, the muscle fatigue, everything. So the next day I went vegan. The first thing I ate was a bean burger and haven’t eaten meat since.”

When he first went vegan, he lost weight, so he adopted a strict weight gain eating plan to get him to reach his 300 pound goal. Carter was able to gain back the 40 pounds he lost plus that last 15 pounds on a plant-based diet.

Surprisingly, green smoothies seem to be his weight gain secret. Rather than use them as meal replacers, Carter drinks protein-rich 20 ounce green smoothies between meals every day, racking up a whopping 10,000 calories during what he calls “Operation Weight Gain.”

He says that white beans and sunflower seeds are his go-tos for protein along with whole grains and other beans, seeds, and nuts.

Check out his sample weight gain meal plan:

via Vibrant Wellness Journal

Since going vegan, Carter says that he’s never felt better. Within just a couple of months, his joint pain evaporated. He’s able to lift more and run faster, and he has less body fat—meaning more muscle—than before going vegan.

Of course, most people on a vegan diet aren’t trying to hit a 300 pound weight goal. This extreme constant eating isn’t necessary for the average person on a vegan diet. Athletes have very different calorie requirements than someone who works a desk job, even if you are a regular exerciser.

Carter went vegan for the health benefits, but he’s stayed for the animals. Like a lot of people—including me—who go vegan for health reasons, animal rights have become as important to him as his own health.

David Carter uses his clout as an NFL player to show that eating vegan doesn’t have to mean feeling deprived. He’s worked with animal advocacy groups like the Humane Society and Compassion Over Killing.

His Instagram account—@the300poundvegan—is peppered with animal rights facts, and he says he loves proving to people that vegans come in all shapes and sizes.

Site Tidy Up.

As you can see from the tabs and the site; there has been a bit of a cleanup today.

Nothing has actually been deleted but instead has been stored in archive.

The photos of the gorgeous girls have been removed, but you can still see small versions at the end of some posts to brighten up the day.

We will still have some ‘time outs’ now and again just to give us a break from the cruelty.  We hope you agree and think that things are better on the refined version – let us know via the ‘contact’ tab – it will be interesting to see if views go up or down as a result of the changes.  We monitor visits every day and know how many visitors we get.

Lets see how it goes; for better or worse.  As we say, things are in archive and so can be re posted if demand calls for it.

Good News For Once ! – Pola the Pig Rescued After 8 Years of Living Hell.

We need something with a good ending !

Pola the Pig Rescued After 8 Years of Living Hell

by Tex Dworkin

pola pig

Pola the freedom-fighting pig was rescued from a horrible living situation in Colombia not once, but twice. Hers is a tragic tale but ends well, and the woman responsible for saving Pola is an inspirational example of just how much good one person can accomplish with enough hard work and sheer determination.

When I first learned about Pola’s horrible plight, I knew only bits and pieces; that she had lived in Colombia for eight years in hellish conditions, literally getting her tail eaten off by dogs, before being rescued and brought to an animal sanctuary to live out the rest of her life in peace.

What I didn’t know at the time was that Pola had actually been rescued before, and the woman who rescued her the second (and final) time, Juliana Castaneda Turner, is a Colombian activist who fights and wins for animals in her homeland, a country not known for its ethical treatment of animals.

I reached out to Juliana in Colombia to get Pola’s full story. When she wrote back, she was apologetic about her English skills; “I risk to write to you in my funny english.” Then she proceeded to explain (paraphrased below) how Pola ended up as the newest member of Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary, the only farm animal sanctuary in Colombia:

Pola was “rescued” 8 years ago from a truck full of baby pigs. The woman who rescued her fell in love with her because she has freckles. This woman has a dog shelter in Colombia, but even though her intentions were good, she had more than 300 dogs living in poor conditions.

Basically, it was not a safe, healthy place for a pig to live. Juliana explained how the government in Colombia doesn’t do anything to help animals there, so those who try to help animals are pretty much on their own in terms of funding their efforts to help animals.

The woman who was swayed by Pola’s freckles ended up losing the space where she kept all of the animals, so when Pola was 4-years-old, she was moved to another dog shelter, which sounded no better than the first place. It had 180 dogs living in — you guessed it — terrible conditions, and there was no fence to protect Pola from the massive quantity of dogs; that’s where her nightmare started, according to Juliana.

Juliana’s Sanctuary shares what happened to Pola next:

For the last 8 years, Pola was living in utter filth, amongst 180 uncaged hungry dogs who constantly harassed her and sometimes tried to tear pieces of flesh from her body. Sadly, they did eat her tail off and parts of her vulva! Pola had no clean soil or grass to play on, but lived amongst garbage and dog feces and was only being fed cheap dog food (that contained pork!). But she never gave up hope that one day she would be rescued from this hell and be loved.

And that day eventually came. Amigos del Planeta, an organisation in Colombia that helps dogs, cats and some horses, was contacted by the shelter where Pola was living. Apparently Pola was no longer welcomed at the dog sanctuary because, as Juliana tells it, “they said the pig destroy everything there.”

Whatever it takes, Pola! Destroying everything was probably the best thing she could’ve done in that situation, because it convinced her detainers to get rid of her.

Amigos del Planeta doesn’t take pigs, so they turned to the only farm animal sanctuary in all of Colombia for help –Juliana’s Sanctuary, which agreed to take Pola in.

It took many tries and a lot of back and forth hassle and money spent before Juliana and her team were able to get Pola to her new home, but thanks to Juliana’s perseverance, Pola finally made it. She says:

When I found her I cried in pain. Her so-called “caretakers” told me that if I didn’t take her she would be killed. It took me 4 attempts to get her to our sanctuary, including hiring a truck for 4 consecutive days, as well as 13 men, and then building her a new enclosure and home on our farm.

Pola was rescued on July 20, Independence Day in Colombia, so they named Pola after Policarpa Salavarrieta, “La Pola,” a Colombian freedom fighter. To those at Juliana’s Sanctuary Pola will always be known affectionately as “the freedom fighting pig.”

Now she gets to eat fruit, her favorite, instead of dog food. She is able to bask in the sun and enjoys the occasional splash of water on her body. She is not in perfect health yet, but she is getting better, thanks to Juliana and the rest of the folks at their sanctuary.

See Pola for yourself: Watch this video for more about Pola the freedom-fighting pig:

Juliana became a vegetarian when she was just 6-years-old and vegan nine years ago when she started her sanctuary. As she tells it, “I dream (of) this since I am a little girl, at 12-years-old, I started to save money to buy the farm of my dreams.”

She’s had to contend with legal battles over land, frustratingly sluggish bureaucracy, and bribes and intimidation, which she says are common in Colombia. Now she’s grappling with the task of securing a new space for the sanctuary and its 66 farmed animals, cats and dogs to call home.

But that’s not stopping her from saving animals. She’s rescued another pig since Pola – a piglet actually—named Perla. She was discovered in the garbage with a broken leg.

Bear Run Over and Beaten by Men Deserves Justice

Petition link – http://animalpetitions.org/117034/justice-for-bear-who-was-run-over-and-beaten/?utm_source=Animal+Petitions&utm_campaign=fd7d0fca4a-240AP8_23_2015&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_5c8ef52732-fd7d0fca4a-79739337

Target: Vladimir Kolokoltsev, Minister of Internal Affairs

Goal: Jail men who allegedly ran over, beat and plotted to sexually assault a bear on camera.

A video released online shows three men driving an SUV over a bear eight times, getting out to kick it and talking about sexually assaulting it with a stick. These men are facing a penalty of either six months, labor or a fine. Tell the Minister of Internal Affairs that these men should receive jail time for this violence they allegedly performed against this animal.

From a nearby vehicle, a friend of the three men filmed as they knocked down a bear in their car then proceeded to run it over, its paws caught under the tires as it is repeatedly crushed by the vehicle while desperately trying to escape. During the attack one man gets out of the car, kicking the bear and climbing onto its back. The men can then be heard planning to use a stick to rape the bear and then gut it with a knife. After some time, the animal manages to shred the tires and the men drive off before it can attack them back.

Animal conservation officials alerted the police once the video was released online, revealing the graphic details of this disgusting assault to the public. The police have stated they will punish the men after determining the motivation behind the attack.

Whether or not these three men assaulted the bear because they wanted to see it suffer or they thought it would be funny should not matter, this terrible crime was still committed against the animal and they were thinking about making it even worse. Sign the petition below to help ensure that the men accused of performing these horrific acts against an innocent animal receive the harshest sentence possible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister of the Interior Kolokoltsev,

Three men can be seen beating down, running over and plotting to perform sexual assault and stabbing a bear on a video released in Russia. The men who allegedly committed this crime are awaiting their punishment and it shouldn’t be a simple fine.

Whether or not they desired this animal to suffer doesn’t matter–the bear suffered immensely either way and these men were considering giving it an even worse fate. Their intentions are important in that it could help determine the best way to rehabilitate them, but they should still receive jail time for their violent actions. The well-being of this bear and the extreme abuse it endured at the hands of humans is worth more than a fine.

Sincerely,

Live Exports – Europe’s Youngest Victims.

CIWF statement

We are appalled by the findings of our latest investigation into live animal exports from the EU, which we carried out in partnership with Animal Welfare Foundation and Tierschutzbund Zürich.

Our evidence shows that as long as this cruel trade in live animals is allowed to continue, young calves will suffer.   Compassion’s patron, Peter Egan, will now tell you more in our latest investigation film:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJKJYwk-8ds

Can you help make this a citizen movement that Europe’s policy makers simply cannot ignore? Please share our investigation and petition with your friends and family either by sharing the URL and message below:

4,000 kilometres is a long way for any animal to be sent just to be ‘fattened’ and slaughtered. But for an unweaned calf, just a few weeks old, this journey from Europe to Israel is one of immeasurable suffering.

Please join me and call on the European Commission to ban the trade in farm animals to countries outside the EU – once and for all.

The following link does include a petition to sign calling for a ban to live animal exports:

Please give your support to this very important issue of animal welfare – thank you.  SAV.
