Irish Calf Exports – from Jane.
Hi Everyone
There is still no confirmation from Stena that they have sourced a suitable replacement vessel to carry the Rosslare to Cherbourg calf trade.
The ICMSA’s chairperson is getting very irate about the situation – 22/01/18 :-
An immediate announcement on the state of Ireland’s live calf export facilities has been called for by the chairperson of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association’s (ICMSA’s) Livestock Committee Des Morrisson.
” It is absolutely essential that a replacement shipping facility is secured and confirmed as soon as possible, as the Stena Horizon goes into dry dock for maintenance for a number of weeks during the calving season, Morrisson explained.”
Commenting on the matter, he said: “There will be over 1.5 million calves born between now and the end of May and it absolutely essential that the shipping issue is resolved – and that an announcement is made publicly.
We have to know that we have the means and capacity to get our calves to the buyers and markets waiting for them.”
“The ICMSA acknowledges the efforts made by both the industry and department on this matter; but, we want to know that the shipping issue has been resolved – because, that’s hugely important in terms of setting a floor price for calves this spring.”
“There is a strong demand for our calves in the EU and there can’t be any questions or doubts about access to this market on the very cusp of this critical three-month period.”
Previously, a spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine confirmed that the department was in “active and ongoing discussions with shipping companies in relation to possible alternative options for carrying livestock trucks” during the period when the Stena Horizon will be unavailable.
“As these involve commercial decisions on behalf of the companies involved, it is not appropriate for the department to comment further at this time,” the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Stena Line also previously explained that it has chartered a vessel as a temporary replacement ship for the Stena Horizon. But, fulfilling the necessary requirements to gain permission to carry live export trucks on the crossing has proved difficult.
Concluding, it added that it was working hard at the time to find a suitable solution.

The roro ferry Arrow was previously named as being a prospective replacement if it passed. But at the moment she appears to be sailing between Lerwick and Aberdeen and nowhere near Rosslare ! If Arrow is not suitable hope they come up with something very soon and don’t think of land bridges and the Joline. This would be costly and they have already abandoned the idea of flying calves from Shannon as too expensive.

UK – Breaking news: Bowood slaughterhouse workers plead guilty to animal cruelty offences!
In late 2014, Animal Aid placed fly-on-the-wall cameras inside Bowood Yorkshire Lamb abattoir in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. Our cameras found horrific, illegal abuse of animals.
Three slaughtermen and one former company Director have now pleaded guilty to animal cruelty offences. The charge against a fifth defendant was dropped.
Whilst sentencing has been adjourned until March, we are very pleased that justice will finally be done.
Bowood is one of fourteen slaughterhouses that Animal Aid has investigated since 2009. We have placed hidden cameras in slaughterhouses that claim to be ‘high welfare’, as well as conventional and non-stun. In almost all we found evidence of law-breaking. This included incidents of deliberate animal cruelty, such as men stubbing cigarettes out on pigs’ faces, animals having their throats hacked whilst fully conscious, stunning tools being used to torture animals, animals being thrown, and more.
The best way you can show your objection to such vile treatment of animals is to stop supporting the cruel slaughter industry and go vegan. You can order a free ‘Go Vegan’ pack, which contains all of the information you need to start cutting animal products out of your diet.
Thank you very much for your continued support for our work, including our investigative work. We could never have achieved this progress without your support.
Best wishes,

USA – Idaho Will Ask For More Taxpayers Money To Kill Wolves – Take Action.
Dear Mark,
If you love wolves, we need your help now.
On January 25th, the Idaho Wolf Control Board will be asking the state legislature for even more money from taxpayers to fund their killing of wolves.
During the first three years of the Wolf Control Board’s lethal removal program, over $1.2 million in taxpayer money was used for the sole purpose of killing wolves.
Mark, in that time 177 wolves have been killed. Despite the tragic loss of life, there has been no reduction in livestock losses – the reason the control board was developed! This careless killing of wolves has to stop now!
It’s a proven fact: Wolves and people CAN share the landscape. Nonlethal coexistence measures pioneered by Defenders across the American West – like using livestock guard dogs, range riders and wolf-deterrent fencing – are not only more cost effective, they’re better at keeping animals out of harm’s way.
Idaho’s wolves have been in mortal danger since Congress stripped them of federal protection in 2011. Since Idaho took over their management, the number of breeding pairs has plummeted and nearly 2,000 wolves have been killed – more than any other state in the Lower 48.
Defenders is the only national organization with staff on the ground in Idaho who not only helped restore wolves in the 1990s but are still actively working against such harmful programs at the statehouse and with the state wildlife commission.
Your urgent support will help us fight to end Idaho’s rogue war on wolves.
For the wolves,

USA: Trump Aims To Open Floodgates On Oil Drilling In The Polar Bears Arctic.
|
|
Hi Mark, Polar bear cubs born last fall are emerging now from dens, beginning a fight for survival in which the odds are stacked against them. As climate change accelerates, sea ice is melting beneath their feet. Many are already starving to death. Brutally disregarding the plight of the polar bear, Trump aims to open the floodgates on oil drilling in the heart of the polar bears’ Arctic. We’re fighting with all we’ve got to keep polar bears safe, and you can help us. Please join the Wild Uprising by making a monthly gift today. Even before Trump’s latest attack on the Arctic, scientists were projecting the species could be all but wiped out by 2050.
Now Trump wants to open all our coastlines to drilling — including the Alaskan Arctic. Drilling offshore in the Far North would spell disaster: A spill is inevitable and would be impossible to clean up.
With you by our side, we’ll mobilize a resistance to protect all our coastlines and keep humpback whales, sea turtles and other ocean wildlife from going extinct.
The Center’s been in this fight from the beginning, and we’ll never back down.
In 2008 we won protection for polar bears under the Endangered Species Act. In 2010 our work spurred the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect 120 million acres of the bears’ habitat — the largest critical habitat designation in Endangered Species Act history. In 2016, after a challenge by the state of Alaska, we won back the bears’ habitat protections in a momentous victory.
We’re already fighting in the courts against Trump’s assault on oceans and marine wildlife and to make sure Arctic, West Coast and Atlantic waters stay closed to dangerous drilling. Oil exploration puts bears directly at risk — more drilling leads to more spills.
For the wild,

Dear Mark,
I am sending you good news concerning the further ban on fox hunting in Luxembourg.
I got this just today by mail, from the “Wild Animal Protection Society of Germany”.
Best regards to you and all
Venus
Luxembourg extends hunting ban on foxes
The Luxembourg Government Council has just renewed for another year the prohibition on fox hunting introduced in 2015. The protection of foxes is a successful model: the fox populations are stable; the predicted “stock explosion” by hunters in the run-up to the hunting ban has failed to materialize. A study now shows that the protection of the fox also reduces the risk for humans to contract the fox tapeworm.
“Action alliance Fox”, an initiative of more than 40 German animal and nature conservation organizations, to which “Wild animal Protection Germany” also belongs, calls on the Federal Government to follow the example of Luxembourg.
The Luxembourg Ministry of the Environment banned fox hunting in 2015 because there was no reason to kill several thousand foxes a year. Hunting associations had repeatedly warned against sprawling fox populations by the hunting ban. In addition, they repeatedly tried to exploit the fear of the fox tapeworm in order to overturn the regulations.
Hunting increases the risk of infection by the fox tapeworm
However, there are no signs of higher fox numbers to this day. In addition, a study published in France in November 2017 shows that hunting increases the risk of infection from fox tapeworm.
While the foxes’ infection rate increased from 40 percent to 55 to 75 percent as a result of heavy hunting, it remained constant in a hunting-free control area. Franck Boué, one of the authors of the highly regarded study, presents the results in a lecture on 29.1.2018 in Luxembourg City.
Fox stands need no “regulation” by humans
Again and again, both studies and practical experience in various fields show that foxes need no “regulation”. Hunting losses, for example, increase birth rates and increase immigration from neighboring areas, quickly compensating for losses.
On the other hand, experience from hunting-free areas shows that fewer fox pups are born there and that there is no mass propagation. “Birth control instead of mass misery,” commented the biologist Erik Zimen.
Ban on fox hunting: pointing the way for the whole of Europe
The ban on fox hunting in Luxembourg sets the trend for the whole of Europe: the right decision has been made against the massive pressure of an influential lobby on the basis of verifiable scientific facts. “It is high time that even political decision-makers in Germany stop bowing to the interests of the hunting lobby,” says Lovis Kauertz, co-founder of the “Action Alliance Fox”. “The example of Luxembourg shows that prohibiting fox hunting not only prevents the often painful deaths of thousands of foxes, but is also a model of success for citizens, animal and nature conservation.”

Canada: Ontario man pleads guilty to animal cruelty in deaths of 1,500 pigs
SIMCOE, Ont. – Ontario’s animal welfare agency says a man has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in the deaths of more than 1,500 pigs.
The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says Ben Stein, of Tavistock, Ont., pleaded guilty Thursday in Simcoe, Ont., court to permitting an animal to be in distress, failing to provide adequate sanitary conditions, failing to provide adequate ventilation and failing to provide adequate medical attention.
Stein is to appear in court on April 26 for sentencing.

Ontario SPCA officers went to a pig farm in Langton, about 80 kilometres southeast of London, last February after receiving a concern about the welfare of pigs on the property.
Upon entering a flooded, manure-filled barn in total darkness, the officers discovered dead and dying pigs.
The OSPCA says 1,265 pigs were dead and an additional 250 pigs had to be euthanized on site due to the severe condition in which they were found.

The Story

33 Dogs & 10 Cats on site and numerous street cats
= 340 Euros Month
Rent for land behind fence = 40 Euros Month
Small Shelter NIS, Serbia otherwise known as SSNS; A private shelter located in Niš, Southern Serbia, Founded in 2006 run by Slađana Stojković ( https://www.facebook.com/sladjana.stojkovic.9) with the help of Goran and Olja, whom we rent a small piece of land (450 square metre) behind the fenced area, costing 40 Euros a month.
There are currently 33 dogs and 6 cats on-site, costing 330 Euros a month to feed. We try and raise funds for food and vet care monthly through our BUY IT NOW Page, however we struggle to raise the funds we truly need to provide for the dogs and cats, therefore we are so grateful for any direct donations.
Although the majority of the dogs have lived at the Shelter long term over the last year (2016-2017) we have had an influx of abandoned puppies; seven in total which has stretched our funds to the limit. Slađana accommodates as much of the dogs behind the fenced area as she can taking into account the dogs’ individual personalities and has spilt the fenced area into individual areas to accommodate the dogs’ that do not get on so well with others.
The dogs have a dog house to call their own some like to share and some still like their old “dilapidated” homes and refuse to move into new accommodation, certain dogs usually the smaller ones have shelter inside Gorans property. It is regrettable that we do not have the “network” or funds to have our dogs adopted out with Serbia.
Animal welfare not being top of the agenda in the “balkan states”, coupled with the area being very poor makes adoption or fostering near impossible.
Therefore the dogs have a permanent home at the Shelter.
Not an ideal situation however they receive an abundance of love and enjoy daily walks by the river located next to the Shelter and with donations are fed, provided vet care and are as happy as they can be not knowing any other situation.
Our long term dogs receive their re-vaccinations every November by our trusted vet, and our “new arrivals” receive as and when by their “in-take” date, all are micro-chipped, recorded on “passports” required by law and are spayed/neutered.
The Shelter is very primitive, no electricity and water is provided via a pump onsite. We have no proper storage facilities for food therefore food is delivered every couple of days via wheelbarrow to the Shelter as there is no direct road. However as this is a very poor region stockpiling food could attract theft which we discourage.
Slađana is passionate about animal welfare and even if she cannot provide a permanent home at the Shelter, finding an animal in distress will ensure that vet care is provided helping the animal recover with the help of other rescues in the area. Slađana is also involved in feeding numerous street cats providing either breakfast or lunch when donations allow and checking on their welfare. She also gives shelter to an adorable ginger disabled cat who resides in the basement of her property with the consent of her neighbours.

Article
Dear Mark,
When I read Juncker’s ridiculous attempts to re-enter you, Britons, some thought came to me, and I send it to you.
Nigel Farage, head of the exit party UKIP, in the EU Parliament said: “Juncker has never had a decent job”!!
He is right.
And anyway, he cannot practice the job of the President of the EU Commission decently.
And here is my comment.

Mr Junker
Juncker got a “nerve exit”!
He still cannot believe that he has lost the most beautiful bride in the EU -England.
It cannot be explained otherwise that he now pretends that everything can (and should) be reversed.
The Brexit is a disaster, he says, a loss for all. Blame it are only a few politicians, not the English people.
He is generous: The EU has not kicked out England, we would like to keep it, and if they want to stay we will find a solution.
And Tusk adds: our hands stay outstretched.

Mr Tusk
The truth is: EU is the loser in this situation, disaster is when you stay in the EU. When it comes to Brexit, the Brits will have gained their versatile freedom, and the EU will lose a strong partner.
Some have understood that being an EU member is a disaster.
Everyone has understood that the model EU does not work.

England can open its own club with Scandinavia, Iceland, Finland, the Baltic States, and perhaps even the Netherlands, to which perhaps Switzerland and Austria may then join.
And Germany can supply the impoverished Mediterranean area.
In any case, the real political Britons fortunately no longer have a vision of Europe, so it is more than embarrassing to try to convince the people to go in again with the kitsch of the open arms or with the sloppiness of the economic catastrophe, where soon nobody wants to go in anymore.
My best regards
Venus
